Fluoride Helps Prevent Tooth Decay Teeth are coated with a film of bacteria called plaque. When we eat or drink foods containing sugars plaque produces acids that attack the surfaces of your teeth and causes cavities or tooth decay. Fluoride can help keep these acids from breaking down your tooth surface. Fluoride strengthens teeth in two ways. One method is when you eat or drink something which contains fluoride it enters your bloodstream. In young children, fluoride travels with the blood to the site where teeth are developing helping them to get strong teeth. Another method fluoride helps to make teeth strong is when it comes in direct contact with the surface of the teeth like brushing with fluoride toothpaste or drinking water or tea which contains fluoride.

Water fluoridation is one important way to deliver decay-fighting fluoride to everyone. Another popular source of

fluoride is toothpaste. Fluoride containing toothpaste not only helps remove plaque but also delivers a second punch to cavities by adding fluoride to make the tooth surfaces more resistant to decay.

Drinking fluoridated water is a safe and effective way to protect your teeth from decay. It is like drinking milk with Vitamin D in it to help you develop and maintain healthy bones. Water naturally contains some amount of fluoride. Community water fluoridation simply makes sure that the water that comes out of the tap has ideal amount of fluoride for cavity prevention.

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste.

Young children should be supervised when brushing their teeth. Parents and caregivers should make sure their children use the right amount of toothpaste and spit the foamy paste out because it should not be swallowed. Children younger than 3 years should use fluoride toothpaste in an amount no more than a smear or the size of a grain of white rice. For children 3 to 6 years of age parents and caregivers should dispense no more than a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Dentists may apply topical fluoride during office visit to reduce the risk of decay. Fluoride supplements also can be prescribed by the dentist to children at high risk for tooth decay in areas where the amount of fluoride in their water supply is low from the ages 6 months to 16 years. In cities where there is optimal fluoride concentration in drinking water there is no need to have these supplements.

White Vinegar Formula (Not Very Toxic)

A stain doesn’t have to become permanent if you know the playbill:

½ cup Vinegar

Whatever you plan on doing to prevent a permanent stain – do it quickly. The longer you wait the less chance you will have of removing the stain.

Always start with the least toxic cleaning method – when you have the alternative.

Test the area to be cleaned. You may be applying a solvent that will damage the item being cleaned.

Often, hot is bad! Hot air, hot water and heated chemicals can actually set a stain rather than remove it. Stay cool unless a cleaning procedure specifically calls for heated whatever!

Here are a few simple stain-cleaner combinations: Cold Water (Least Toxic) Plenty of Water Yep, just plain old-fashioned water.

Carbonated water also works well.

½ cup Water Use On: Alcohol, ammonia, blood, coffee, tea, cosmetics, crayon dyes, food stains, furniture polish, ink medicine, milk, soft drinks and vomit.

Ammonia Formula (Slightly Toxic) 2 tbsp Ammonia 1 cup Water Use On: Acid, alcohol, blood, cement, glue, cosmetics, crayon, dyes, food stains, furniture polish, ink, medicine, oil, paint, soft drinks and vomit.

When all else fails try these formulas: General Cleaning: Soak the item in a gallon of warm water with a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and a quarter teaspoon of ammonia for a couple of hours. Rinse in fresh water and wash normally using bleach. CAUTION: Do not use detergent that contains bleach when adding ammonia. Bleach and ammonia combine to create a deadly chemical.

Wine and Other Alcoholic Beverages: Sprinkle the area with table salt – lots of it. Scrub the item in a bath of cold water until the stain disappears and then launder normally.

Baby Formula: Use water and MSG (meat tenderizer) and mix up a poultice. Cover the area and leave it overnight. Then wash normally.

Beer: Use a half-cup of ammonia or vinegar in three quarts of warm soapy water. Hand wash.

Grease: Earlier we mentioned that “hot” stuff will often set a stain – and that is true.

However, there are occasions when hot is good. For example: Cooking grease, butter and other fats are liquefied and removed easily with boiling hot water. Keep in mind that non-washable fabrics should never be soaked in water – hot or cold!

Lipstick & Ink: Lacquered hair spray is a super pre-treatment for ink and lipstick.

Spray it on as a pre-wash.

Any stain on marble & granite: Use half a grapefruit dipped in salt. Rub the area clean and then immediately flush thoroughly with fresh water and then towel dry.

School Days I’d like to let students, teachers and parents know about some of the enrichment materials and experiences that my office may be able to assist you with this school year.

For the youngest children in Assembly District 11, we can provide coloring books (in English and Spanish) that emphasize lessons in personal safety and fire safety, as well as explain how a bill becomes a law.

We also can make available activity books for older students, covering such topics as the environment, state and federal government, and the legislative process.

For older students, we have access to materials about California’s history, seal and motto, as well as in-depth information about the state Legislature and the California Constitution.

If you are a student who is beginning to think about college – or a parent of

such a student – we can be a resource for information about the CalGrant program and Middle-Class Scholarships.

And for students on the cusp of adulthood, we have access to a “Survival Guide for Teenagers” that explains the legal ins and outs of turning 18.

My staff and I also welcome the opportunity to meet students by either visiting your school or arranging tours of the State Capitol in Sacramento or of my District Office. We are also happy to present Assembly Certificates of Recognition to students, teachers or parents who are singled out for their achievements or volunteer efforts.

Speaking of school, I’m pleased to report that my bill requiring school districts to screen kindergartners through thirdgraders for dyslexia (Assembly Bill 1369) has made it through the Assembly and is now being considered in the state Senate.

If it passes, and if the governor agrees, the Superintendent of Public Instruction will have a year to update the state’s guidelines for identifying and dealing with students who are dyslexic.

For those who aren’t familiar with the term, dyslexia is a language-based

learning disability. It refers to a cluster of symptoms that result in people having difficulty with specific language skills, such as reading, spelling, writing, and/or pronouncing words.

Dyslexia occurs in students of all backgrounds and intellectual levels.

People with dyslexia can be very bright.

Yet, the inability to read or write as well as other students can leave them feeling “dumb.” They may become so discouraged that they drop of out of school.

With the days getting shorter and the mornings a little cooler the annual tradition of participating in opening day of dove season is well under way. Local farmers have already harvested their last corn and are prepping the grounds for the fall plantings. East County has so much to offer, it is time to look in on a wonderful restaurant that offers an array of great food and wonderful opportunities.

Heading out to Antioch on assignment, I found New Oriental Buffet quite easily.

As a regular Macy’s shopper, I knew it was right off Somersville Road, south of the mall. The entrance was sparkling and the smell of great food met me as I opened the door. Jane greeted me with a welcomed smile and showed me around the restaurant. I told her I was interested in the party room, so I got to see all the
