A Brief History of the Caledonian Club of San Francisco’s Scottish Highland Gathering and Games
We are proud and happy to be a part of this annual event in Pleasanton each Labor Day weekend. A Brief History of the Caledonian Club of San Francisco’s Scottish Highland Gathering and Games. In the beginning, long before colonists began to settle in the New World, Scotland already had a lengthy history and culture. Heavy Athletics Events were being held in Scotland at least 1,000 years ago. Caledonian Club of San Francisco’s Inaugural Games in 1866, San Francisco had been sobered by the Civil War, the bloodiest war in American history. The Club’s Inaugural Games were more of a family picnic and athletic content featuring nine competitive events including hammer throwing and stone putting, and three-legged and
Scottish Fiddlers and other traditional entertainment on the Celtic Heritage stages. Other events include Birds of Prey and Archery exhibitions, historical re-enactments, historic British cars and motorcycles, sheep dog trials, the Clan Glen and Children’s Glen, Clydesdale horses and Highland cattle. In addition, there is more entertainment in the Irish Pavilion, Traditional and Celtic Rock Bands on the Entertainment Stages and whisky tasting and master classes with ‘Whisky Live’. Finally, each day, the Games Grandstand Show features the ceremony, competition and entertainment of the Games including the hugely impressive March of the Massed Bands with over 600 pipers and drummers.
A History of Tradition and Growth The Caledonian Club of San Francisco’s Scottish Highland Gathering and Games have taken place every year since 1866. Since that Inaugural event in San Francisco’s Hayes Park, the scale of the Games has grown as more events were added and bigger crowds turned up. Sesquicentennial Scottish Highland Gathering and Games. Today, the Caledonian Club of San Francisco’s Scottish Highland Gathering and Games are the largest in the USA. This year’s 151st Games is a 2-day event that will take place on September 3-4 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. It features Heavy Events Championships, the US Drum Major Championships, the Western U.S. Open Highland Dancing Championships and various grades of Pipe Band Competitions. Other competitive events include the Kilted Mile Race and Soccer, Shinty and Rugby competitions. Visitors to the Games can enjoy Scottish Country Dancers, the San Francisco

Breath Malodor Halitosis, bad breath and oral malodor are all different terms used for breath malodor. Oral malodor should not be confused with odor arising from recent food ingestion, smoking, alcohol consumption, extra oral sources and psychological conditions. It should not be confused with morning breath malodor as this arises from decreased salivary flow during sleep and generally disappears after brushing teeth and flossing teeth in the morning. The incidence of halitosis ranges from 30% of the world’s population according to a number of studies. Evidence indicates that 25% to 40% of the population of industrialized countries experience this condition. Nearly 90% of breath malodor cases arise from oral cavity and is associated with poor oral hygiene, gingivitis, periodontitis, cavities in teeth and tongue coating, broken fillings or fractured teeth. Infections in the mouth like abscess in the teeth,
fungal and viral infections can also cause breath malodor. Dry mouth and some medications can cause the breath to have bad odor as well. Out of the remaining 10% who suffer from this condition 5% have chronic sinusitis, infection in tonsils, chronic bronchitis. Some patients have gastrointestinal problems like regurgitation, hiatus hernia, bacterial infections of the stomach. Patients with liver cirrhosis, kidney problems, starvation, internal bleeding and menstrual cycle are also causes of breath malodor. The other 5% of the patients are attributed to psychological conditions. Temporary bad breath is caused because of smoking or diet (garlic, dairy). Bad breath is caused principally by bacteria associated with gum disease found in the gums and also on the tongue surface. The dentist will assess if the cause is primarily due to problems in the mouth or other medical conditions and treat accordingly or refer the patient to the physician to address the problem and get treated.

Cooling Your Home On a hot summer day an air conditioner can make the difference between heat prostration and almost certain comfort. So, it is wise to learn to identify small problems—before they become the reason the air conditioner stops working. There are three basic types of equipment used for cooling: 1) a fan, 2) a water cooler, and 3) a refrigeration type cooler (an air conditioner). And, there are two basic types of air conditioners: 1) those which mount in the window or wall – used to cool a single space, and 2) central units that pump cool air to several spaces from a single location via a series of ducts. This week’s offering will deal with central air conditioners. Central air conditioners are most often installed as two separate components – one at the furnace and one outside the house. The component at the furnace is known as the coil unit and the one outside is known as the compressor or condenser. The two units are connected by copper tubing that contains refrigerant. When the air conditioner is operating the refrigerant is pumped from one unit to the other via the copper tubing. Window and wall type units have both components in the same housing. You might be interested to know that when properly installed a central air conditioner does more than just provide comfort by cooling. Air conditioners also circulate and clean air (through the use of in-line filters). Dehumidifiers also can be added to an air conditioning system to help reduce humidity that causes damaging condensation.
An air conditioner is very simple machine. The most complex part is understanding how the refrigerant works. A refrigerant is a compound that gives off heat when in a gaseous state and that absorbs heat when it is compressed into a liquid state. When the refrigerant is in the cooling coils it has been compressed and absorbs heat. When the refrigerant leaves the cooling coils it is changed to a gas and gives off heat. The fan motor in your furnace circulates air past the heat absorbing coils in the coil case and the freshly cooled air continues through the ducts and out wall, ceiling or floor openings to cool the house down. The outside unit contains a fan that blows air through a devise called a condenser. The condenser looks and acts exactly like a car radiator. Instead of motor coolant the condenser if filled with refrigerant that has been pumped to it from the coil case. At this time the refrigerant is in a gaseous state and expels the heat it absorbed inside at the coil case. Interesting cycle isn’t it! Well, as you might already have guessed there are quite a few moving parts which are used to build an air conditioner. Most important are the pumps and fans. They must all operate at once in order for your two-piece central air conditioning system to work. The electric circuit that controls the furnace fan, normally, is separate from the electric circuit that operates the condenser unit. This is very important to know because it is common for a fuse to blow out at the condenser unit. The furnace fan continues to operate—and two things happen – the air conditioner supplies hot air – and you get the impression that something has gone wrong with the air conditioner – it runs but supplies hot air. Remember, you should be able to hear the fans running at both the inside and outside units. Never, never call a service person to repair an air conditioner until you have checked power everywhere (inside and out). Why, you ask? Who wants

If the fan is clear and the panels are secure call a technician and have the motor checked. A loud rumble at the furnace end of the configuration also can mean a bad motor, but chances are the fan belt wants you to know that it’s time for replacement. In 2015 the Federal Reserve Bank of New York released a report entitled “Insolvency After the 2005 Bankruptcy Reform Act,” which sheds light on the choices a person should make when dealing with financial adversity. The report studied data from 1999 to 2011 and compared the credit scores for insolvent borrowers that file bankruptcy to the scores of those that do not. The Federal Reserve Bank concluded: The individuals who go bankrupt experience a sharp boost in their credit
score after bankruptcy, whereas the recovery in credit score is much lower for individuals who do not go bankrupt.

The findings refer only to those borrowers considered insolvent. The definition of insolvent used by the study is individuals with accounts that are 120 or more days late or charged off. [Note: the term “charge off” or “charged off” is often misunderstood to mean the lender has forgiven the debt but usually the debt has been sold to a collection agency.] At this point, you might be asking, “Is that true?” The conclusion of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York is true and is supported by my experience over the years. To understand why, you need to realize that good credit is a history of paying bills on time. If you are in over your head in bills, and you are not able to pay even the minimum payments, then your credit will go bad and remain bad until you are able to resolve the debts. Bankruptcy clears debts and allows you to begin building good credit quickly. Most people fear bankruptcy will ruin their credit for many years, but the truth is that people are able to qualify for mortgages in as little as two years after bankruptcy! Setting aside funds for your child’s college can become challenging when you’re simultaneously paying for private, K-12 education. Tuition for private, K-12 school averages $13,640 per year, according to the most recent statistics from the Council for Private American Education. But, the price tags can vary widely, depending on which city you choose to call home. In New York City for example, a handful of elite, private high schools charge more for one year of tuition than some Ivy League schools.

The penalty is only on the earnings portion of the withdrawal. The 10% penalty is waived with death, disability, and scholarship (of the beneficiary).
