TRAVEL TIME

The Cooks, The “Low Key” South Pacific The Cooks consist of 15 islands located in the heart of the Pacific, halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. The main island, Rarotonga, with its large lagoon, is a continuous land mass, so you can easily explore different resorts, restaurants and attractions. The small airport is just a few minutes’ drive from most resorts. In fact, you are less than 30 minutes to any beach. So once you land, you’re there.

On a budgeting note, the 10-hour nonstop flight from Los Angeles is frequently under $900. Cook Islanders use the New Zealand dollar, which exchanges at $1.40 to our dollar, good for the American visitor.

Of course, the Cooks have the sun and sand and aqua waters you’ve always associated with the South Pacific. But there are several ways the Cooks stand out from those other major destinations.

Celebrity

Since November to April is rainy season, so resort prices are lower, and November to March is cyclone season, although the country hasn’t had a serious storm in many years. July to October is “whale season” during which cavorting whales and their offspring are visible from the shore.

With a strong cafe culture and a burgeoning artisan food scene, Rarotonga lives confidently in the 21st century. Fish and other seafood is the thing to have here. You eat what was caught that day.

Do not forget to visit the night market where you can sample a variety of traditional foods.

There are no high-rises, no chain stores, no McDonald’s, not even a stoplight. This is, as they say, Hawaii like it was 50 years ago. It’s so easy to do as much or as little as you like in the Cook Islands. Oh yeah, two words to know: kia orana. It means hello, may you live long, and many other things.

Go with the flow if you’re greeted with a kiss on the cheek instead of a handshake, even on a first meeting. These people really are friendly. People speak their minds, even to strangers, so feel free.

There are several cool places to see or activities to do: visit the fabulous Punanga Nui market held every Saturday morning; Take an excursion to Aitutaki atoll, where there are essentially beach islands encompassing blue lagoons. Attend a Sunday church service, as they are colorful events where women sport elaborate Polynesian head dresses and the choirs are uplifting. Take a cultural village tour, without feeling too touristy; Taste some island wine and bush beer; swim in the underground cave pools; Take a Tik-E electric tuk-tuk tour with Karl Jackson, a New Zealander expat. Anything you ever wanted to know about the Cooks will be revealed. Of course, snorkeling and diving are in abundance.

Kidney Disease and Oral Health Kidneys perform extremely crucial functions in the body.

They expel waste like urea, help produce red blood cells, regulate blood pressure and regulate calcium, phosphate and vitamin D in the body. Kidney disease often does not exhibit any symptoms until it is in the advanced stages. The dentist can help detect early warning signs by evaluating patients for high blood pressure and determining whether patients have a history of heart and kidney disease. If the early signs are present the patient can be referred to their physician as early treatment can reduce the likelihood of End Stage Renal Disease or (ESRD) from developing. Kidney disease is a progressively debilitating condition that leads to ESRD in which the kidneys cease to support daily bodily functions requiring either dialysis or a kidney transplant. The progression to kidney failure may take as long as 10 to 20 years. Diabetes and High blood pressure are the most common

causes of ESRD in the United States. More than 871,000 people receive treatment for kidney disease. Aging population as well as the increased prevalence of obesity, diabetes and hypertension have contributed to rapid increase in ESRD. Cardiovascular disease associated with ESRD is the most frequent cause of death among older adults.

Kidney failure may cause a variety of changes in the mouth such as paleness of the oral tissue, breath that smells like ammonia, mouth ulcers, dryness in the mouth. Patients may experience increased formation of plaque and calculus causing gum disease; jaw tumors and delayed healing are also signs of kidney disease.

Patients undergoing dialysis take blood thinners so they need to let the dentist know about it as they can have excessive bleeding if certain dental procedures are performed. Patients undergoing dialysis may need to take antibiotics prior to their dental appointments. Certain medications like antibiotics and pain medication should not be taken in patients with kidney disease. In addition to all these precautions preventing cavities and monitoring periodontal health regularly with the dentist is important as both these conditions tend to worsen as kidney disease progresses.

Not All Approvals Are Created Equal Prospective homeowners in the Bay Area know the pain of competing with cash offers. Per Corelogic’s Home Price Index, home prices have reached pre-recession levels in most areas of the country. This leaves folks without the personal assets to compete with cash buyers in a tough spot.

Therefore, it’s important prospective homeowners know the differences between the three basic “approval” statuses - prequalification, preapproval, and “underwritten preapproval” - most mortgage lenders offer potential homebuyers. For sake of comprehension, I like to explain the difference between each “approval” in terms of dating.

A prequalification letter is like the first three months of dating. There isn’t much commitment nor exclusivity. A prequalification letter can be obtained with as little as a simple verbal conversation with a lender. The lender is taking your word for the status of your

7 Home Improvements To Tackle Before You Move In You found the perfect home, so it’s not surprising that you want to move in as quickly as possible. However, there are some projects that are best done when the house is still empty.

So, consider completing the following seven items before the moving trucks arrive.

1. Painting. A fresh coat of paint can instantly update a room, and it’s common to buy a home knowing you will need to paint several rooms or the entire house after the sale.

However, painting is best done while every wall is accessible and there are no worries about getting paint on furniture or rugs.

2. Changing locks. Now is the time to change the locks on your new home to eliminate the risk of any former keyholders accessing your new space. Do this even if you know the former keyholders because you never know who they shared keys with.

This fix is quick, inexpensive and it provides you with peace of mind.

3. Flooring updates. Redoing a floor is always easier when the floor is empty.

Whether you’re choosing to redo wood

floors or lay tile before you move in, tackling this process now also allows you to keep wood and tile dust off of furniture and collectibles.

4. Roof repairs. Roof repairs are a must. If the home inspection revealed any damage to the roof, make the necessary repairs before moving in. Choose a contractor experienced with the type of shingles your home requires.

5. Removing popcorn ceilings. No one likes these. We’re not sure anyone ever did, but alas, they are a common sight, especially in older homes. Popcorn ceilings (and walls) are easy to remove but messy. Use a spray bottle to moisten an area, then scrape the texture off with a towel. Clean-up will be much easier if you complete this project before introducing your furniture to the space.

6. Fix leaks. If left untreated, water leaks can do serious damage to furniture, rugs, flooring and other valuables. Leaks can also lead to secondary problems like rotting wood, mold and mildew. And let’s be honest, no one wants to live in a house where you can’t use the water, so address plumbing issues before you move in.

7. Child and pet-proofing. Careful child and pet proofing can protect your babies (furry or otherwise). Gates at the top and bottom of stairs, outlet covers and locks on cabinets, drawers and any other place chemicals or

Rebuilding Credit Most people take good credit for granted, that is, until some life event changes things. Financial adversity is never welcomed, but it is, nonetheless, a part of life. The notion of rebuilding credit assumes your underlying financial problems have been resolved leaving bad credit but not unpaid debt.

The remaining question: how does one rebuild good credit? This article presents several tips.

The first tip is to become an authorized user on a family member’s credit card.

Of course, this needs to be a credit card that is being used and paid in a timely manner. An authorized user is not contractually liable for charges on the account and is not required to qualify but will get some credit report benefit when timely payments are made. Naturally, this requires the cooperation of a family member. Note: the family member is not required to actually give you the physical card nor are you expected to use it.

The second tip is to get two or three lowlimit credit cards in your name. You might think you will not qualify to get a credit card due to your credit but usually that’s not true. In fact, most people receive pre approvals shortly after resolving their debts, even if they filed bankruptcy. Once you get a card (or two or three) it’s critical that all payments be made on time. More than just making payments, the key here is to utilize about 20% of your available credit. For example, if the card has a $500 limit, you should charge about $100 per month and pay it off. The idea is not to max out the card, even a low limit card.

The third tip is to get a copy of your credit report and carefully look for errors. A Federal Trade Commission study concluded that 20% of credit reports contain errors, but other studies have found errors in up to 80% of credit reports. The law gives you the right to dispute inaccurate information in your credit report. The Federal Trade Commission has excellent resources to assist consumers in correcting inaccurate information on a credit report.

Conversely, you should not bother with payday loans. Typically, payday loans will not be reported on your credit report which means they are of no use in rebuilding your credit. Similarly, paying

cash for purchases does nothing to demonstrate your ability to manage debt and repay loans in a timely manner. This may seem counter intuitive but you really need to take and repay loans to rebuild your credit.

In conclusion, you can expect to have good to excellent credit in 12 to 24 months if you apply these tips.

Print vs. Digital Advertising A study done in 2015 by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (OIG) worked with Temple University’s Center for Neural Decision Making compared the reactions of readers when presented with either a digital or physical advertisement. They used various neuro-marketing techniques (such as eye tracking and biometric measurements) to gauge readers’ reactions. The following results of the study showed that print advertising was leaving more of a positive and lasting impression on the subjects: • Subjects spent longer reviewing physical media than digital • Printed media evoked higher emotional reactions • Physical media led to subjects having a great desire for the product • Subjects attached high subconscious values to products shown in the printed advertisements • A week later, subjects were able to
