WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Two Front Teeth Well, it’s a beautiful spring day in East County. Off to the west is a clear picture of our famous Mt. Diablo, nestled in the beautiful golden surrounding hills. It’s a perfect time to check in with a local dentist office that brings a perfect smile to everyone’s face.

Dr. Huma Bayat, DDS and owner of Platinum Smiles Family Dentistry is a local gal who chose to open her practice in Brentwood, the place she calls home. Off to visit her office, I was no stranger this area, as I practically know most of the businesses in our downtown area. She is located on O’Hara across from the “old” Safeway, which for those of you who are new to the area, opened in 1990 and the whole town came to the grand opening.

I knew right away that this was going to be one of those professional offices that I felt comfortable just by walking in the door. It is clean, bright and welcoming. Since this is just an assignment, my questions were pretty general, but I sure learned a lot.

First and foremost, Dr. Bayat is a woman, and since most of you have guessed that I am too, this was a great find for those of us who would prefer women professionals.

And her professional background is endless.

I think I liked the verbiage printed on her literature and website stating “Dr. Bayat likes working in the profession as it gives her the opportunity to improve the lives of her patients by supporting their dental health and wellness. She enjoys meeting and treating patients of all backgrounds and learning about their lives”. Well, when I met her, I knew right away these words were not just marketing propaganda. Her own smile comes from within and truly represents her desire to take good care of her patients. This counts 10 extra points.

Her services are affordable and available for your entire family. Her team is honest about possible procedures and the cost of the treatment. Their care is prevention based, with early diagnosis and helpful when parents need to educate their kids about the importance of maintaining good dental health. They offer a huge variety of services including whitening (my favorite), veneers, invisalign, dentures, implants, periodontal treatment, root canals (not my favorite), white dental fillings and the best

cleaning you can get, all done right there in her office.

If you are like me, going to the dentist is not at the top of my “to do” list and usually comes with sweaty palms and a nervous stomach. Well, Dr. Bayat offers “conscious sedation” which takes the edge off for those of us who are just plain “chicken!” Please go to her website at www.platinumsmilesdentristry.com to get more details on this service so you can check this off your “to do” list. The Bitter side of sweet Seventy five percent of Americans consume added sugars above the World Health Organization’s recommended 10 percent limit. The term added sugar refers to sugars that are not naturally occurring in foods. Naturally occurring sugars include honey, sugar cane, sugar beets, fruit and milk. In 1977 the first Dietary Goals for Americans were issued by the U.S. Senate, which targeted dietary saturated fat as the primary reason for heart disease. In response the food industry reduced the fat content in processed food. To make the food taste better dietary sugar replaced the fat so by 2000 added sugar increased by 32 percent of total calories.

This dietary paradigm continues to this day. More than fifty of all American adults consume more than 50 grams and U.S. adolescents average 94 grams of added sugars per day. As of July 2018,

manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales will be required to disclose added sugars content and what percent of the daily added sugars limit it represents on packaged food labels. This will give consumers to reconsider their food choices when they learn that a 20 ounce bottle of coke contains 65 grams of sugars or 130 per cent of the daily limit based on a 2000 calorie diet.

Over the past 40 years coincident with this change in dietary pattern the diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease have increased in prevalence in addition a brand-new disease nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has become an epidemic within the pediatric age group. Lack of physical activity in children adds to this problem. This liver disease causes the liver to enlarge in about 25 per cent of these patients which can progress to liver cancer. and 30 to 40 percent of these patients die within 10 years. This disease is projected to become the leading cause of liver transplantation in the U.S. by 2020.

Reducing the consumption of sugary drinks is a key public health goal as sugary drinks are the largest source of added sugar in the American diet and is associated with a range of chronic diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes,

cardio vascular disease and dental caries.

Recent studies confirm that consuming sugary drinks increases the risk of cavities in children. Dentists see the effects of sugary drink consumption every day.

While added sugars in the diet may not be the sole cause of chronic disease it is the easiest to identify and modify our diet accordingly for a healthy life.

Keep your credit card balances within 40% of the allowed limit. If you have $5,000 as your limit, then keep your balance amount to $2,000 to show that you are not pushing your limits, it is like the old saying they only give you money if you don’t need it. Also

This is good and bad advice at the same time. If you have a credit card with a limit of $2,000, and you charge $1,500 on it, you’ve used 75 percent of your credit limit. Now if you split your amount into two, and spend $750 each, then the percentage of usage will be around 37 percent. So it helps your FICO. Now, don’t go on a credit card shopping spree.

Check your credit reports regularly. Just go online and check your credit score at least once in a year, so that you can catch any mistakes and get it corrected. There have been cases when banks report you to FICO by mistake. Keep in mind that free reports are a consumer product and the credit score will vary depending on the type of credit you are applying for. Monitor your co-signed joint accounts even if they are family. You need to monitor the statements closely to make sure everything is in order. There is no use complaining if you chose the wrong joint holder who was careless and you don’t catch it.

Maintain a good mix of good and bad loans.

Home and business loans are considered good loans. Personal loans and private label credit cards are considered bad loans. This is why investing in a home loan if you are a spendthrift is a better decision. You will have a good credit mix and build an asset.

If you know you will not be able to pay on time, call and negotiate with your bank.

Banks may be willing to extend your loan period and reduce the EMI and the FICO will see you are proactive.

It is a smart decision to pay your home loans over longer periods. Pay off your personal loans, credit cards and private loans first, as they tend to have a higher interest with no asset creation. Home loans, on the other hand but they build an asset. This is one of the underutilized logical tips to improve credit score. Pick a loan and set a goal and then focus on paying that one off (but don’t buy something to celebrate).
