Did You Properly Fund Your Trust?

2. Check Your Grant Deed– Check your grant deed and read it carefully to see if it lists your name or Trust. If your Trust name is listed, make sure every word matches your Trust name and date. If only your name is listed, your property is NOT in your Trust.

What Happens if I Die and My Trust is Not Properly Funded?

You went to see an estate planning attorney and you established your Revocable Living Trust. Yah! You are all done! Right? Many clients think that is all they need to do. Unfortunately, they are often missing the most important step: funding!

After you establish your Revocable Living Trust, it must be funded. To fund your Trust, you or your attorney must re-title your assets to properly reflect that the asset has been transferred to your Trust.

Are my Assets in my Trust?

1. Identify Your Trust Name – Every Trust has a name and establishment date.

Generally, your Trust name and date will be included on the first page of your Trust.

Read your name carefully. Every word is important!

Here is an example. Let’s pretend my Trust name is Joan Grimes, Trustee of the Grimes Living Trust dated January 1, 2018.

If your Trust has not been properly funded when you die, your beneficiaries may be required to open a probate to transfer the asset. Probates in California are very expensive and can often take over a year to complete.

3. Check Your Bank and Brokerage Statements – The easiest way to tell whether your bank or brokerage accounts have been transferred to your Trust, is to check the name in the top left corner (where your name and address are generally listed). Look to see if your Trust name is included.

4. Business Interests, LLCs – Depending on your circumstances, you may have assigned your business interest or LLC to your Trust. If you wish to assign your interest, you should discuss this with an attorney to ensure that the governing documents authorize the transfer.

5. Retirement Accounts and Life Insurance Policies – Retirement accounts and life insurance policies are not generally transferred into a Revocable Living Trust because it can trigger certain tax consequences (however, there are sometimes exceptions to this general

3 Ways To Be Even More Productive, Starting Now! There are just not enough hours in the day. Whether you are at work, on campus, or at home; there are many ways to stay productive through out your day.

Productivity can be hard to manage, but with the correct mindset you will be able to set goals and achieve them on a daily basis. With these tips and tricks, your day will run smoother and you can end your day knowing you worked hard.

The first thing to do is try and avoid multitasking. Many think that multitasking can help you achieve tasks more than once, but multitasking means that the effort put into these tasks can be less efficient. Multitasking can also cause huge distractions and cause you to forget what tasks you were even trying to focus on.

The tip here is to tackle one task at a time before completing another. Find a quiet

spot or place that can help you focus, whether it is a quiet room in the house or even playing your favorite song to help you focus. The second is to shift most your workload to the beginning of the week, so you don’t push your tasks aside. It can be paperwork, filing, laundry or vacuuming.

Try to get these things done earlier in the week so that the work load doesn’t pile on too close to the weekend. If writing everything down on a post it or setting reminders on your phone helps, then do that! Anything and everything can be the difference in spreading out your workload or having too much on your plate by the end of the week. Also, be accountable, tell family members and friends of your goals for the week and tell them the results. It will make you feel that much better that you could get things done.

The final tip here is, turn off social media. As hard as this can be in a world dependent on technology, it can have huge results on your productivity.

Checking in on apps such as Facebook and Twitter can take up a huge percentage of your day and time. Your phone or computer does not need to be completely turned off, but just try to ignore the apps during the day so you can

focus on your day and your goals. You can spend so much time just scrolling through apps and wasting time, you will never get anything done and just like that the day is over.

These tips and trick can help you have a more productive week and feel better about yourself by the time the weekend comes around.
