Well folks, I think we just experienced the trip that Dorothy took on the way to the Land of Oz. The farmlands managed to keep the top layer of soil in place for this year’s corn and all the flooded signs are taken down. It is the first day of May and there is still a breeze outside, but Mt. Diablo has clear skies all around so it looks like we are actually going to launch right into the high temperatures with summer lurking around the corner. What a great time to look in on a local business that can create that “new you” for the season.

I must say, I was pretty excited to get this assignment because a few months ago I stopped in my favorite Starbucks in Discovery Bay and my coffee was compliments of this wonderful new business in the Safeway shopping center called Lux and Blvd. And having a real love for spending time at the salon, it was even more intriguing.

I will start by saying, the moment you get your first glimpse of this place from the parking lot, you feel like you are somewhere on Rodeo Drive. It is fresh, sparkling, welcoming and beautiful and you haven’t even gotten in the front door.

Now I am sure that most of our readers need to at least maintain a regular hair cut, and probably a large percentage enjoy a full service salon, so please, tear out this page and on your next trip down Hwy 4, stop in an see this place for yourself.

I do so like to put my experiences in my own words, but, they truly say it best on their promotional material and ads. And I quote “Defining beauty with style. Be bold! Be daring! Be simply beautiful!

Where luxury and style collide on the boulevard!” WOW!!! The moment you walk in the door, you are on a journey of a real salon experience that feels as though it was created just for you.

With a large staff that they call the “Dream Team” you can enjoy all the amenities of a full service salon and spa. Hair services include cut, color, retexture (I love this) utilizing the highest quality professional products. They also have make-up artists that will teach you the simple basic techniques for an every-day look to the most glamorous you that you have ever met! While there, you can get a real professional massage, like the

one designed just for fibromyalgia, have your nails done, enjoy a relaxing facial and even remove all that unwanted hair by waxing. Did I mention they also have tanning available? Now the kicker, not only do they have hairstylists, they have a real barber. Ten extra points. They attribute their expertise to ongoing education and teamwork. You can experience this as soon as you walk in.

At my age, we used to just ask someone at the grocery store whose hair looked great and was similar to what you might wear as to where they got their hair done. Now with social media you can get all the scoop from lots of customers and get a feel about their business before you walk in the door.

that 91 people died every day from opioid overdose in 2016. More than 11% of Americans reported non-medical use of prescription painkillers at some point in their lives in a study done according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Block The Path To Addiction The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the US Department of health and Human Services estimates that nearly 2 million people are currently abusing or are dependent on prescription painkillers. The Nation is facing a serious substance abuse problem. It is an epidemic with alarming statistics.

The number of fatal drug overdoses outnumbered the number of fatal motor vehicle accidents in the US for the first time in 2009. In 2014 more than 28,000 people died from opioid related drug overdoses ranging from legally prescribed painkillers to street obtained heroin. In 2015, according to the Surgeon General report on Alcohol Drugs and Health 12.5 million Americans misused prescription pain relievers, 20 million had full blown substance abuse disorders and 78 people died every day from opioid overdose. This rate is increasing according to Disease Control and Prevention which reported

The outgoing US Surgeon General Vivek H.Murthy recognized substance abuse disorders as “one of the most pressing public health crises of our time.”

Because of these increasing mortality rates caused by substance misuse the CDC has lowered white Americans’ life expectancy by 4 months. It found that other population groups were not adversely affected by opioid mortality mostly because they have more difficulty getting access to prescription painkillers.

The misuse of narcotic drugs has not only caused the shortened life expectancy but has significantly diminished the quality of life for the abuser and their family and the community at large. It costs the US an estimated $200 billion a year in lost productivity, healthcare interventions and law enforcement efforts. By comparison a serious disease like diabetes costs 245 billion each year in lost productivity and healthcare resources. In the dental office patients come in with acute pain for an abscess, infected root canal, implant

surgery and pain killers are usually prescribed for teeth extractions mostly third molar extractions.

As health care professionals, parents and caregivers it is our responsibility to inform that adolescent, that teenager, that 18 or 19-year-old, about how these drugs are powerful agents, they are mind altering agents and if they are going to play around with these narcotics they could severely hurt themselves and others. We should let them know people die from overdosing on them and they could get arrested for using or distributing narcotics. They could even go to jail, be expelled from school or fired from a job and totally wreck their life.

space, but it often lacks the windows and natural light an art studio needs. One way to convert a garage into an art studio is to add as much natural light as possible.

Ideas for Garage Conversions

Start by installing a glass garage door, a full-length glass entry door and windows, if possible. If adding windows is too costly or difficult, for example, if you have to cut into brick to install windows, then you could add skylights for additional light.

Do you need more

space but don’t want the cost of adding on to your home? Look no further than the garage space you already have. With a little effort and a lot of creativity, you can turn that cold, hard garage into an oasis that will be the envy of your family and friends.

A concrete slab floor is the perfect flooring for your studio, but you can make it less harsh by painting it with an epoxy shield.

Your floor will need a day or two to dry. Work with a garage door company to have the doors installed and a general contractor for any windows or skylights.

Extra Bedroom: If you have a growing family, an attached garage can be converted into extra bedroom space or a larger garage can be turned into a master bedroom.

Because you’ll want the bedroom to feel as though it’s a natural extension of the rest of your home, ensure the area can be heated and cooled. Add extra insulation to keep that heat and cold in.

Home Office: If you run a business from home or you telecommute, a separate place to work can keep you focused on the task at hand and allow you to bring clients into a professional space. However, you don’t want the office to look like you converted your garage, so you’ll need some heavy-duty tools to complete this task.

Build up the floor so it’s at the same level as the rest of your home. No one wants to step down into their bedroom. Add the flooring of choice, but look for something that might cushion the concrete beneath. Fortunately, you likely already have enough outlets and electricity in place for the average bedroom.

Most of the changes here are cosmetic.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all the tools you need, you can rent what you need in most cases. For example, you can rent an air compressor to power pneumatic tools. Some of the tasks you’ll need to complete that can be sped up with the aid of pneumatic tools include installing French doors, adding drywall and installing flooring.

Man Cave: There are times when a man just needs his own space to escape to. If the man in your home already claims the garage as his own, why not make that a reality and convert it into the perfect man cave?

Since a man cave can be a bit rugged, and you likely won’t spend a lot of time in it, you can get by with hanging some manly signs, adding a poker table and a bright rug, and making sure you have a way to heat or cool the room when needed. You might also want to add a bar area and mini fridge.

Home Theater: Do you love to gather your family and friends together to watch a few flicks? Turn a garage area into a home theater. First, make sure you have the wiring for surround sound and your electronic equipment. Next, finish off the walls and the floor. Simply painting the concrete and adding a plush rug or two will transform the space.

You’ll also want to install a screen, projector and comfy theater chairs. Finish off the atmosphere with a standing popcorn machine, soda fountain and candy counter.

Converting an existing garage will save you time and money over adding on to your home. The key is to envision how you want the finished room to look and then work toward that goal one step at a time.

Do You Still Have an AB or ByPass Trust?

Up until 2011, it was very common for estate planning attorneys to draft an AB or ByPass Trust for clients. The purpose of the AB/ByPass Trust was to create estate tax savings by keeping a deceased spouse’s property out of the estate of the surviving spouse.

However in 2011, federal estate tax laws were changed dramatically to exempt most estates from paying any estate taxes. For 2016, the exemption for each person is $5.45 million. The amount will go up each year based on a “cost of living” increase. In addition, under the rule change called “Portability”, a surviving spouse may use any unused portion of a deceased spouse’s estate tax exemption upon filing a 706 tax return.

For example, a couple has an estate of $7 million. The husband dies, leaving his wife with an estate of $7 million. There is

no estate tax due because wife takes all property by way of the marital deduction (which is unlimited). Because husband’s personal exemption of $5.45 was not used, the wife can add his $5.45 to her exemption at the time of her death by filing a 706 tax form.

The personal exemption and portability have meant that very, very few people will pay any estate tax. Therefore, the traditional AB Trust is no longer necessary or useful for most people. That is not to say that there is anything wrong in keeping an existing AB Trust. HOWEVER, there are serious drawbacks which you should be aware. Specifically, (1) with an AB Trust there are restrictions on what a surviving spouse can do with property in the ByPass Trust created with deceased spouse’s assets i.e. making it is difficult to sell assets; (2) with an AB Trust, the surviving spouse cannot make gifts to anyone of the ByPass property and (3) with an AB Trust there can be substantial costs involved in managing the Trust after the death of the first spouse including establishing the ByPass trust, preparing the trust tax return each year and record keeping to ensure that the property in ByPass Trust is kept separate from the surviving spouse’s assets.

In most cases, an AB/ByPassTrust is no longer necessary or advisable for estate planning. If you have not looked at your Trust recently, I strongly encourage you to review it and see whether it provides for an AB Trust. If it does provide for an AB/ ByPass Trust, I would encourage you to seek legal counsel to see whether it may be in your best interest to amend or restate the Trust to remove the AB Trust provisions.
