As we begin our 20th year in East Contra Costa County, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our readers and advertisers. If you don’t already know, my mom and dad started the Grapevine out of their home office in 1996, they direct mailed to homes and businesses then and we are one of the only publications in the area that still does. With rising costs of paper, gasoline and postage, our dedication is to keep our pricing competitive, yet still delivering to readers mailboxes each and every month, which has not changed in 20 years!

Being in a family owned and operated business I feel is a valuable asset these days as well, I came into the business almost 16 years ago ready to use my degree, and determined to keep the business in the family! I’ve had a lot of help over the years, my mom taught me everything I know about ad design and layout, she’s the most creative person I know! Our family friend and bookkeeper at the time taught me about QuickBooks, reporting and how to keep the finances in order and my dad, well he taught me how to be an Information Technician, which is not what I signed up for but computers crash, need updates and some days just don’t want to work properly. I don’t know what the future holds, but my daughter, who is starting high school in the fall, wants to go into Computer Animation.

Delta Aquatic Weed Abatement Continues Waterways in Contra Costa County were among the first to be treated for aquatic weeds this year.

The California Division of Boating and Waterways started herbicide spraying on March 4, focusing on Rock Slough, Indian Slough, Coney Island and the San Joaquin River to treat Water Hyacinth and Spongeplant. Discovery Bay has been treated over the last few weeks.

For over a year now, I have held meetings, co-authored legislation, supported augmenting the budget, and worked closely with Boating and Waterways to ensure that my constituents receive the services necessary to maintain their quality of life on the Delta. Extreme drought, record-high temperatures and low water flows have caused warmer areas of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to become choked with aquatic weeds.

The Division of Boating and Waterways has permission to treat 3,500 acres of Water Hyacinth in the Delta up until November 30. In addition to the Contra Costa sites, it will be treating San Joaquin County areas, including Middle River, Whiskey Slough, Old River and the Tuolumne River. On June 1, the state will expand the herbicide treatment to other Delta areas. In addition, mechanical harvesting of Water Hyacinth in the Old River area of the South Delta and around Stockton will occur on an as-needed-basis.

I want to thank everyone who contacted my office about the aquatic weed issue. Our voices played a critical role in securing these resources. It is very important that we continue to provide feedback to the Division of Boating and Waterways so that its staff can better assess infested areas for further treatment.
