Who’s Who... in East County

About a year ago, Laura Rodriguez decided to give up her career in corporate America for a healthier and happier life. Laura holds an MBA from Cornell University, and has lived in Buenos Aires, Paris, Miami, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay area. Having passed the big 4-0, she decided that life was too precious to be traveling constantly, working endless hours, and stressing so much. It is inspiring that she is opening her own childcare business and completely and courageously changing her life.

Laura began by thoroughly researching the industry, visiting kindergartens, family childcare homes and centers, and consulting with various local childcare organizations. She also talked to all her friends with children, from different cultural backgrounds, to discuss what they felt was most needed in childcare. Laura found out that the area needed childcare for overnights, parent trips, weekends, and unexpected situations. She also saw the need for healthier programs with lots of outdoor activities, summer camps, after school programs, and special activities classes, like drama and art development. So she decided to incorporate all of this in her practice.

According to friends, Laura’s interaction, dedication, and patience with kids is admirable. They say she is extremely respectful of children’s individual personalities, and instinctively knows how to communicate with them; when to encourage and praise, when to joke and play, when to give them their space; and they always respond positively to her. One friend says, “As a mother, leaving my children with her would give me great peace of mind.

After all, most of us wish we could leave our kids with someone caring, educated, and with lots of common sense, but most of all, someone like us!”

Harvest Time HARVEST TIME in Brentwood recently met for a photo shoot with Sam Young Photography to help launch the 2014 Membership Drive and their inaugural 2014 Brentwood Harvest Time Festival.

The Festival will be held in Historic Downtown City Park and Civic Center on Saturday, July 12 & Sunday, July 13, celebrating the farmlands harvest.

Harvest Time in Brentwood is a 501c6 non-profit organization whose mission is promote the U-pick farms, roadside stands and agricultural retail marketing outlets in East Contra Costa County.

Harvest Time and its members offer unique and rewarding ag-tourism opportunities to visitors to enjoy farm fresh, delicious products, learn about farming, it’s history, and appreciate the nutritious and economical value of local grown products.

This year, the annual trail map will present over 50 farm stand locations.

The printed map is available at all Harvest Time stands, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, and various other locations throughout the area. It can be downloaded from the Harvest Time website at harvest4you.com and is available on the FREE Harvest Time App on iphone & android versions.

Businesses can get a listing on the APP to direct the 180,000 farm stand visitors to their business for an annual fee of $220. Call the Grapevine for more information.
