WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Hot Stones to the Rescue!

Here it is the end of March and the forecast for the week is sunshine and warm.

Halleluiah! After the long winter of rain, rain and more rain, it seems as though everyone is heading outside to get a dose of warm sunshine.

The wonderful reward from Mother Nature is those beautiful green hills. If you look closely toward the southeast corner of Contra Costa, you can even see the first sign of this year’s crop of sweet corn.

The bummer is, the weeds seems to be happier than those brand new lawns, so it will be time to put on those garden gloves soon. What a great time to take some time out for yourself before Spring arrives.

I am truly a big fan of massage and believe it is an absolute necessity to good health.

How fortunate we are to have a new studio right next to Starbucks on Brentwood Blvd. that you can spend a little time to relax before your double express.

Miracle Massage is so easy to find and unless you come at 3:30 when school lets out, the parking is a snap. When I walked in the front door, I was greeted by a very kind gentleman who handed me the postcard listing all of the different services they offered. It was my intention to have a massage that day, but I told him I would come back the first of next week and he said that I could call or just walk in. Nice plus!

I think the part I liked most about Miracle Massage was their hours of operation.

They are open seven days a week from 9:00am to 10:00pm so you can actually get a massage on the way home after that long commute on Vasco Road. And did I mention to wonderful aroma therapy? I really believe that taking the time to breath deep, relax and thing about nothing but how great those hot stones feel is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

Their prices range from $20 to $78 and include both foot and body massage. Your one hour foot massage for $20 includes a full 15 minute soak and a head, neck, shoulder, arm and back massage. Now that is a great deal. Your body massages are only $30 for a half hour and a full two hour massage is $78. The best part is they use those wonderful hot stones.

The entire team here at the Monthly Grapevine highly recommend Miracle Massage and they join me in giving them five Grapevine grape clusters for bringing this wonderful studio for relaxation to East County. My appointment is scheduled for next week and I can’t wait. Who will be snooped next, it could be you.

Now, for those of you who have never had a massage, this is certainly the place to give it a try. Not only is it extremely affordable, but it is VERY PROFESSIONAL! The environment is very relaxing and the decor is modern and extremely clean.

They provide a gentle touch to those that are very sensitive and a deep tissue to those who have those horrible knots in their shoulders. Another plus!

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic limb amputations and also new cases of blindness. It is also a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 25 million people have diabetes and of these 7 million have not been diagnosed but have the disease. Key Spring Maintenance for your Concrete Driveway Spring is here, and you’ve got gardening and long walks with the dog to look forward to. But chances are that your concrete driveway took some abuse from winter’s temperature swings, and what is a small issue now can turn into a big, expensive problem if you let it go for too long. Now is the perfect time to nip any damage in the bud and help your driveway look beautiful for years. Read on to find out how!

Step 1: Clean. The first step for finding out your driveway’s condition is to get it good and clean. Sweep away any leftover winter detritus such as leaves and branches, so you can get a good look at your driveway’s surface. Now check your driveway’s surface for any growths. Green algae or mold and mildew can make the surface slippery and dangerous to walk on; black algae can make your driveway look dirty and ruin its appearance; moss can damage the surface of the concrete

and even worsen cracking and crumbling, and lichen can cause permanent pitting on the surface of some driveways.

If you see any of these growths on your concrete driveway, apply a gentle, scrub-free product such as Wet & Forget Outdoor to safely eliminate the problem.

Wet & Forget Outdoor’s non-caustic formula wipes out growths and keeps them away for a year or more in most cases without damaging your concrete driveway’s surface or compromising the protective seal coat, like harsh chemicals or pressure washing can do.

Step 2: Inspect. Now that you have an unimpeded view of your driveway’s surface, there are some important things to check for to maintain your driveway’s health.

First, examine your driveway’s surface just after it has rained. Look for any areas where water is pooling; these areas will be prone to water damage, and leveling them out so that they drain properly will prevent cracking and crumbling down the line.

Now look for any cracks in your driveway or any areas of crumbling concrete or weed encroachment. Any of these issues will progress into more severe damage if

you don’t address them right away.

Step 3: Repair. Now that you’ve located any problem areas, it’s time to repair them. To repair cracks, wait for a cool, dry day. Clean the area and remove any chunks of concrete. Pull any weeds that have popped up in cracks or along your driveway’s border. For hairline cracks, apply concrete paint over the crack. For larger cracks, apply a crack sealer such as vinyl concrete patch, grout, or epoxy concrete patch. Make sure to allow at least 24 hours’ drying time before the chance of rain for the sealer to set.

Step 4: Reseal. Now that you’ve repaired any driveway issues, it’s time to protect your driveway. Concrete experts recommend re-sealing your concrete every 5 years or so, depending on the climate where you live. Buy a sealer that is specially made for concrete driveways and follow the instructions. If you used Wet & Forget Outdoor to eliminate growths on your driveway, it’s safe to reseal your driveway as soon as the moss, algae, lichen, or mold and mildew have disappeared.

1099’s This time of year I routinely get inquiries about forgiven debts and the dreaded form 1099. As a general proposition, the tax laws create an obligation to pay tax whenever the taxpayer’s finances improve. For example, a paycheck improves my financial position and creates an obligation to pay tax on that income. With a paycheck, the taxes are taken out directly and remitted by my employer. With that in mind, if I owed $30,000 but was able to resolve the debt by paying $5,000 I would have improved my financial position and might assume I would owe tax on the $25,000. Whether I owe the tax depends on my circumstances. A couple examples of forgiven debt provide context before I delve into the rule and its exceptions.

Debts can be forgiven in several ways, the most common being settlements and bankruptcy. In a settlement the lender agrees to accept a sum of money to resolve a debt. Generally the

amount will be in the range of thirty to sixty cents on the dollar of the balance owed. That means a $5,000 debt might be settled for $1,500 to $3,000. Upon payment the borrower will have no further obligation to the lender. Settlements are common when the original debt was for a credit card or personal loan. Bankruptcy can allow a person to pay little or nothing and have no further obligation to the lender. The bankruptcy system refers to forgiven debts as having been discharged.

Regardless of the terminology, the point is the money is no longer owed.

That may seem like the end of the story but later the borrower may get a 1099. Form 1099 reflects cancellation of debt by the lender, it does not create a taxable event. In fact, very few people should pay the tax. Unfortunately many people prepare their own tax returns and mistakenly pay the tax. The IRS cheerfully accepts the money! The rule making cancelled debt taxable has two major exclusions discussed below.

Either of these exclusions will render the forgiven money non-taxable. All you need to do is attach IRS form 982 to your tax return to clarify why the income reflected in the 1099 is nontaxable. The exceptions are also discussed in IRS form 982 and IRS publication 4681.

The Discovery Bay Yacht Club Splashers Host Fundraiser for Save The CA Delta Alliance The Discovery Bay Yacht Club Splashers are hosting a Fire & Ice Masquerade Ball on Saturday, April 8th in support of local 501(c)3 Save The California Delta Alliance.

This black-tie fundraiser will raise money to help STCDA win the fight to STOP THE TUNNELS and to protect our beautiful Delta. This enchanting evening at the Discovery Bay Yacht Club will include a fabulous 4 course dinner, exciting Cirque du Soleil style entertainment and dancing to a bay area favorite band ... The Cocktail Monkeys.
