Picking The Perfect Cabinet!

Home improvement manuals teach us that there are many factors which combine to create the total cost of a set of built-in cabinets: Wood specie and thickness, joint construction, type of paint or stain and varnish, door-hinge type, drawer-glide type, overall cabinet size, whether the cabinet finish is applied to the inside and the outside or just the outside, and door style and door thickness, are but a few of the almost endless choices that have to be made.

Interestingly, there is another major cost consideration that easily can be overlooked, and one which we have never seen mentioned in available literature — the door-drawer configuration. That is, how many doors and/or drawers a particular cabinet, or set of cabinets, contains.

Drawers can be made from as few as five pieces of material — a bottom, two sides, the back and the front. A door, on the other hand, can be made from a little as one piece of material. And although

smaller, a drawer front can be every bit as difficult to mill as a door. Also, a drawer rides on tracks called glides which are substantially more expensive than the pair of hinges used on a door.

Given this information it doesn’t take a Sherlock Holmes to deduct that, all else being equal, a cabinet with one door will probably be far less expensive to purchase than a cabinet that contains a door and a drawer or even three or four drawers. Remember, we said, “all else being equal.” If you price the cheapest drawer against the most expensive door then the drawer will win with a lower price.

Having read this you may be thinking that one way to cut cabinet costs is to use less drawers. And such might be the right thing to do in your case. But rather, we would suggest that you design your cabinets so that they meet your particular needs while at the same time considering the differences in cost between doors and drawers.

Be careful! Trying to cut costs can backfire. For example: using one door where two have been designed could be a mistake for a couple of reasons. First, one large door can be cumbersome to open in a tight space like a kitchen or bath, and second, the larger the door the more prone it is to warping and twisting — a

very common problem that even effects normal size doors. Also, a kitchen with too few drawers could be very unappealing.

Actually you could end up with an end result that is as useless as a baby’s bottle without a nipple.

Cabinets with doors only can be used very effectively in combination with sinks and countertop appliances like cooktops.

Many designers will lead their clients to believe that sink cabinets for example, should have a blank piece of wood over the doors that aligns with the top drawer of an adjoining cabinet. Although this is a common practice we see many designers designing many cabinets with doors only joined with several banks of drawers.

Older kitchen designs included one bank of drawers per kitchen plus several other modules each containing one drawer and one door.

Be creative — develop a design that will make your kitchen, bath, office or entertainment center versatile and practical. And that might not necessarily be how the cabinet salesperson perceives your project to be.

Marriage, Divorce and Bankruptcy Most of us are aware of the statistics, half of marriages end in divorce. According to www.divorcepad.com/rate, the likelihood of a divorce is even higher in a second marriage and higher still in a third. Financial problems are one of the leading causes of divorce. In an article Dr. Phil writes, “It’s this simple: Money can ruin your marriage.” Financial trouble is never easy and can be doubly tough in marriage. In some marriages the spouses do not see eye to eye about their finances. In other marriages one spouse had substantial debt before marriage. Debts and financial problems lead to argument after argument. In desperation people ask themselves, “When will it end?” That’s a good question. Many try divorce only to find the debts are still there. It’s true, divorce does not make debts disappear, and getting your own place isn’t

Many people wonder if they can file bankruptcy without including their spouse. Others wonder if they need to get divorced before filing bankruptcy.

The law gives every individual the right to bankruptcy so long as he or she can demonstrate financial hardship. A married couple can file bankruptcy together, which is called a joint bankruptcy, but they are not required to. Bankruptcy will only forgive debts for the person who files.

If most of the debts are held jointly, a bankruptcy by one spouse would be of little benefit because the other spouse would remain liable. If, however, most of the debts are in the name of one spouse, there may be no point in having the other spouse join in the bankruptcy. Often I am asked, “Can’t bill collectors come after both of us if we’re married?” That’s a good question. The legal theory in California is that both spouses can be liable for debts incurred during marriage, but there are so many exceptions to that rule that consumer creditors rarely seek to collect from a spouse that did not sign the contract. For credit reporting purposes, a bankruptcy will only show on the reports of the person who files. Lastly, a caveat, if a married person files bankruptcy

alone, that person must disclose his spouse’s income and assets unless they are separated.

Do You Know Who Your Beneficiaries Are? When was the last time you checked your beneficiary designations for your individual retirement account (IRA), employer retirement plan, annuity or life insurance policy? If you haven’t examined it since the account was set up, you are not alone. But don’t hesitate.

Due to changing circumstances and shifting priorities, you may find that your named beneficiaries are no longer in keeping with your estate plan or wishes.

If you have switched jobs, become a new parent, divorced or survived a spouse or a child, your current beneficiary designations may need to be updated.

Consider the “What If?” In the heat and emotion of divorce proceedings, for example, the task of revising one’s beneficiary designations can fall through the cracks. A court decree that ends a marriage also terminates the provisions of a will, but it does not automatically revise the beneficiary status of an employer-sponsored retirement account or an IRA. Some financial

institutions, such as Morgan Stanley, automatically cancel the designation of a spouse as the beneficiary of an IRA in the case of divorce, but not all do. So, for example, if an IRA owner remarries and has a new family, but fails to change the beneficiaries on the account, the original beneficiary may have a legal claim to the assets in the event of death.

Also keep in mind that the law requires that a spouse be the primary beneficiary of a 401(k) or a profit sharing account, unless he or she waives that right in writing. A waiver may make sense in a second marriage if a new spouse is already financially set, and the children from the first marriage may need the money.

Steps to Stay Current To ensure that your beneficiary designations are current and up-to-date, consider the following steps: Make a list of all accounts that have named beneficiaries. This may include 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, 457 plans, IRAs, pension plans, life insurance policies, annuities and bank accounts.

Contact the plan administrator or financial institution that maintains or services your account to verify your current beneficiary designations. You may want to do this with the help of your tax advisor or estate planning professional to ensure that these documents are in synch with other aspects

of your estate plan.

Keep it safe. Store this list in a safe place with your other estate plan documents, such as your will, health care proxy and power of attorney, and make sure your designated executor has a copy.

Register for online access. If you do not already have online access to your accounts with beneficiary designations, consider registering so you can view and update your account information whenever you need to.

Consolidate. If you have changed jobs and left your assets in your former employers’ plans, you may want to consider moving these assets into a rollover IRA. Consolidating multiple retirement plans into a single taxadvantaged account can make it easier to track your investment performance and streamline your records, including beneficiary designations.

Naming beneficiaries and keeping them up-to-date is only one important aspect of estate planning. Let me work with you to make sure your entire estate plan addresses your current wishes and circumstances.
