Let’s Get into Shape for Summer!

The sun has just set and a quarter moon is peeking over the horizon in a sky filled with stars. Thank heaven the rain has stopped and our wonderful farmlands are starting to see signs of dry land. With a few showers on the forecast, it seems as though everyone is still showing signs of cabin fever. And to top it off, those Girl Scout cookies seem to be for sale everywhere and those New Year’s resolutions of losing weight are just a memory. What a great time to look in on a local business who can help get back on track and put you on the right road to better health.

Delta Valley Health Club is one of East Contra Costa County’s finest fitness centers. The really neat part about getting this assignment is, I have watched the Club grow since it first opened. You know when you pull into the parking lot and see a variety of people going in and out of the main entrance, it is the place to be.

As soon as you walk in the front door, not only are you greeted by a friendly staff, but

it looks exactly like a place anyone would feel welcome.

I think one of the things that I like most about the Club is you can call, stop by or go on line and request a guest pass to check out the facility. Did I mention it was complimentary? They have been doing this for years and I can’t think of a better way to introduce anyone to their Club.

Now, that being said, you can also go to their website to see videos of the place even before you get your guest pass. I don’t often boast about checking out a business online rather than taking a great recommendation from yours truly, but, I would really like you to put down that cookie and least check it out for yourself.

The place is huge and offers a multitude of opportunities to get you in great shape for that bathing suit this summer. They have a swimming pool, lap size, with lessons and aerobic classes, weight training, wellness counseling, fun fitness classes, rock climbing, massage, sauna & steam rooms, child care, preschool and personal trainers for everyone and every new state of the art type of exercise equipment you could imagine. When you take a tour of the Club you feel like you’re are at a private fitness resort with every room offering yet another aspect of wellness.

about this unique Club is people who go there. Everyone is so friendly and you will probably recognize many of your friends and neighbors on your tour. One of the coolest things is they offer a specialized training and fitness program for athletes, from baseball to golf and more. Now you are talking! The outback, most of which is accessible only by 4wd. has as its most prominent feature the Flinders Ranges which are similar to the rugged beauty of many of the Southwestern States. The wonder of Wilpena, a natural amphitheatre set within the mountains is a must part of any adventure.

Adelaide is one of the few walk-able cities in the world that was planned before it was built! Surrounded by parklands, it’s ideally situated along a river and just 15-20 minutes by car from the beach.

One must see in Adelaide: the Botanical/ Rose garden, one of the largest in the world. Get a taste of things at the Adelaide Central Market, Coopers Brewery and Bottega Rotolo cooking school. Indulge in Haigh’s Chocolates.

Diabetes And Oral Health Diabetes is increasing in epidemic proportions in the US and throughout the world and it is one of the most burdensome chronic diseases of our time. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic limb amputations and also new cases of blindness. It is also a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 25 million people have diabetes and of these 7 million have not been diagnosed but have the disease. People at high risk of developing diabetes are also called pre diabetic and about 79 million U.S adults older than 20 years are in this lengthy stage which has no symptoms.

Identification of pre diabetes can help target with early intervention like lifestyle changes resulting in weight loss and exercising can significantly delay the progression of pre diabetes to type 2

Patients with diabetes are more prone to get periodontal disease. Knowledge of the diabetic status in patients with periodontal disease is important because uncontrolled diabetes is associated with the rapid progression of periodontal disease. These patients have worse glycemic control and are at a greater risk of developing complications in their heart and kidney. Complications from diabetes often can develop before starting treatment for diabetes. Early diagnosis and prevention of progression of periodontal disease or gum disease is very important from a dental health point of view. Great benefits can be achieved by identifying patients with diabetes or patients who are pre diabetic. There have been situations when these patients are unaware of their condition when they came in for their regular dental checkup in my office and after getting advised they see their health care provider and are so very happy since then. Early diagnosis helps with preventing patients from developing complications from diabetes.

5 Ways to Transform the Furniture You’re About to Throw Out If you’re trying to update the interior decor of your home by getting rid of old furniture, you might want to consider fixing up your furniture rather than simply throwing it away.

It’s easier than you think to revitalize furniture and have it looking better than ever. This can not only save you money but also keep your bulky furniture pieces out of landfills.

The following are five good ideas on how you can transform your old furniture to improve the look of your home’s interior: Give it a good cleaning Simply giving a furniture piece a thorough cleaning can go a long way in revitalizing it and making it appropriate for your newly designed interior.

Couch cleaning should involve a thorough vacuuming and ideally a shampooing.

For wooden tables and chairs, you can use wood polish to enhance furniture appearance.

Changing pillows and cushions can complete the job if you find that more is needed to truly transform and upgrade your furniture pieces.

Have it refinished For furniture that is made mostly of wood, refinishing is a good option to improve appearances.

You can refinish wood furniture that is looking dull and stained or try cabinet re-facing for fixtures in your kitchen and bathrooms. These projects are really not

that complicated and you may be able to handle them yourself.

The only thing you have to do is apply another layer of finish or, in some cases, drape off the old finish before applying a new finish.

Have it upholstered Furniture that has cushions built into it can be upholstered to remove aged fabric portions and completely change the furniture’s appearance.

Of those, you’re probably going to need to have this task done professionally because reupholstering furniture is admittedly more complicated than refinishing wooden furniture. However, do some research and you just might find that reupholstering furniture is less expensive than buying completely new furniture pieces.

When you reupholster, you really have the chance to completely change the color scheme of your furniture because you can choose a fabric with completely different patterns and features like colors and textures.

Painting or repainting furniture works wonders when it comes to making furniture pieces look new again. Over time, wooden furniture inevitably will suffer from wear and tear, but a coat of paint will leave with a furniture piece that looks new and fresh.

Painting is an easy project that you can inexpensively handle yourself. You can paint not only wooden tables, chairs, and shelves, but also bed forms, cabinets, and more.

Don’t make the mistakes of throwing away good furniture that still has a lot of life in it.

Remember that furniture is expensive and sometimes costs money to dispose of because it is so bulky and heavy. If you get rid of your furniture, you have to not only pay for new furniture but also pay for delivery costs.

Put some thought into transforming your old furniture to save money and make your redecorating efforts more convenient.

Therefore, reupholstering is a good idea if your old furniture doesn’t match up with a new paint coat you’ve put on your walls or other new decor features you’re putting in your room as part of your redecorating efforts.

Understanding Portability The Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2010 amended the Internal Revenue Code to allow the estate of a decent who is survived by a spouse to make a “portability election.” A “portability election” allows the surviving spouse to apply the Deceased Spouse’s Unused Exclusion (DSUE) amount to the surviving spouse’s own transfers during life and at death. Portability was set to expire December 31, 2012. However, in January, 2013, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (“ATRA”) made the portability provisions permanent. On June 16, 2015 the IRS released final regulations.

The original portability requirements remain unchanged by the final regulations, which are as follows: 1) the decedent must be a U.S. citizen; 2) the DSUE amount portability election must be made on a timely filed 706 return within 9 months of the decedent’s date of death, or when allowed, within 15 months using an automatic extension; 3) the estate tax return must be complete and property prepared; and 4) the unused exclusion amount may only be used from the “last deceased spouse.”

The Amount of the Exemptions

The Continuing Case for a ByPass Trust

For 2016, the lifetime gift, estate and Generation skipping transfer tax credit is $5,450,000. The exemptions index up with inflation each year. The tax rate on transfer in excess of the applicable credit is 40%.

Portability has made the transfer tax side of estate planning much easy. Many times a client will ask if there is still any reason for a ByPass Trust. The answer is YES. The following are just a few situations where a ByPass Trust is absolutely advisable: 1) Creditor Protection, an outright gift of property to the surviving spouse provides virtually no protection: 2) Blended Family, if there is no bypass trust, there is no “legacy protection” to ensure that the surviving spouse ultimately disposes of the property in a manner consistent with the decedent’s objective; 3) Protection from subsequent unsuccessful relationship protection is needed to ensure they are not alienated from the trust assets; 4) A Bypass trust provides better protection for beneficiaries than general power of appointment marital deduction trust because the surviving spouse must have the right to receive all income and potentially distributions of principal.

Portability Election Portability is an ELECTION. It isn’t an automatic “allocation.” In order to elect portability, an executor must file a timely estate tax return, which is defined as 9 months after the date of decedent’s death. The final regulations clarify that if an estate is required to file an estate tax return because the estate is over the federal estate tax threshold ($5.45 million in 2016), an extension to elect portability under Regs. Sec. 301.9100-3 may not be granted because the due date for the return is governed by statute. However, if an estate is under the threshold, the IRS may grant an extension of time to elect portability.

Who is responsible for making the decision to file for portability?

The decedent’s executor is responsible for deciding whether to make the portability election or not. If there is no appointed executor, “any person in actual or constructive possession” of any the decedent’s property may file the estate tax return. If the elector chooses not to make an election, he or she can do so by either making an affirmative statement on the estate tax return or by not filing a timely estate tax return.
