Dickey’s Barbecue Pit opened its newest restaurant in Brentwood on Friday, January 25. Multi-unit owners Damon and Shantel Owens are excited to be serving authentic pit smoked barbecue to another city in California.

“We feel truly blessed that we are able to own our own restaurant during these tough economic times,” said multi-unit owner Damon Owens. “We opened our first Dickey’s location in Concord, about one year ago and despite the economy, we are doing quite well. We are excited to have the opportunity to bring quality hickory smoked meats to East Contra Costa County in beautiful Brentwood.” The couple also owns and operates the Dickey’s Barbecue in Concord, off of Ygnacio Valley Road. “Dickey’s will be a place where families can enjoy great food, without breaking the bank,” said owner Damon Owens. “We’re looking forward to partnering with local community organizations, churches and schools for fundraising opportunities as well.”

Lollipop Haircut Shop With a love for creating beautiful haircuts combined with a love of children, Adela Camacho, Carolyn Hudley and Clara Morales opened Lollipop Haircut Shop in 2007. Having three owners gives Adela, Carolyn and Clara a lot of flexibility, allowing them to bring their ideas to life and work hard doing what they love, while sharing the stress and responsibility that comes with owning a business.

They say it has been a blessing!

Lollipop is a hair salon that offers haircuts for children and adults, hair styling, and a variety of professional hair care products for the whole family. The salon environment is very child friendly and is equipped with car styling chairs, T.V.’s, and a waiting area full of toys and books to keep the little ones entertained, so both children and adults can enjoy a nice haircut. In addition, they keep up with the latest trends by offering feathers, bling strands, color rub, etc. And, for those special first haircuts, they offer an adorable “first haircut package”, which includes a certificate, small picture and a lock of hair.

With an atmosphere geared towards kids, the little ones take notice the minute they enter the salon. What

the adults will appreciate is the quality of the haircuts. Adela says, “The fact that we can give a good haircut on a moving target still amazes us!” And their prices are reasonable. There is not a salon like them in the area, and their prices are very competitive with local “regular” salons. They want customers to come to them without feeling like they are breaking the bank. In addition, the ladies of the Lollipop Haircut Shop say it makes them very proud to see customers happy and exited to return. They would like customers to have fun and leave the shop, relaxed, satisfied and feeling like they got their money’s worth.

Being involved with their community is important, so they are members of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and have participated in the Cornfest and Brentwood’s Hometown Halloween. They have also given donations (gift certificates and gift baskets) to Mothers of Brentwood, local schools, and various community fundraising events. They tell us they are more than happy to help out the community when they can and any written donation requests are welcome and can be dropped off during business hours.

A special shot out to Adela. She is amazing. I went to several places looking for a girl who could do an A-line cut. She does it beautifully. A very friendly staff and you can make appointments for the same day. – Jennifer K., Brentwood My son had his very first haircut here.

I was worried he’d be the “kid that cries” but he loved the place. Toy area to play while you wait (hard to pull him away once it was his turn) The staff are awesome...they are patient with the little ones that sometimes have trouble sitting still for such a long process...The chairs are Power Wheels vehicles and they always have a movie playing on the TVS so they can watch it also helped to get our son to look up when needed. I recommend making an appointment, they do accept walk-ins but I have NEVER seen it empty, they are BUSY place. – Crystal F., Oakley I have been taking my kids here for 3 years. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Operation Homefront Princess Cruises Sailing is Expected to Raise $1 Million for Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Operation Homefront.

Princess Cruises is announcing an unprecedented cruise to support U.S. veterans, expected to raise $1 million for two highly regarded U.S. veterans organizations – the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) and Operation Homefront. Princess President and CEO Alan Buckelew, himself a Vietnam veteran, will be on board to host the sailing.

Sailing from November 5-9, 2013 aboard Caribbean Princess from Houston to the Western Caribbean, the four-day cruise will offer passengers the opportunity to honor both those who have served in the military as well as active duty military personnel. Onboard programming and activities – including guest lecturers,

special topic panels, a Stars and Stripes Sailaway, service branch get-togethers, a film festival and more – will be customdesigned to celebrate those who have, and are, serving our country.

Buckelew says. “As a veteran myself, I know that America’s warriors face immeasurable challenges both during active duty and when they return home. I look forward to meeting many of our passengers on board to help us raise much-needed funds to assist our veterans.”

A portion of each passenger’s cruise fare totaling approximately $500,000 will be matched by Princess Cruises with a further $500,000, for a total of $1 million earmarked for the two veterans causes.

Funds raised will be shared equally by both organizations.

The Western Caribbean cruise will sail roundtrip from Houston, with a call at Progreso, Mexico. Fares range from $604 to $1,704 per person based on double occupancy. A portion of each fare ranging from $100 to $300 per person will be donated to each cause.

The Effects 0f Cancer Therapy and Oral Care Today in the United States the chance that a man will get diagnosed with cancer at some point during his lifetime is 1 in 2 and the odds for a woman is 1 in 3. According to the latest published statistics, there are about 14 million people living with cancer in the United States and this number is expected to continue to rise to over 18 million by 2020.

This increase is because of the rise of incidence in cancer and also the increase in survival. Advances in modern treatments have increased the survival rate for many cancer patients. These patients also have unique dental and oral healthcare needs as a result of cancer and also because of the cancer treatment. Today’s cancer therapy may include surgery,chemotherapy, radiation,targeted cell therapy, hematopoietic cell transplantation

The side effects of cancer and cancer therapies of concern are xerostomia (dry mouth) and hyposalivation, inflammation of the tissues in the mouth and bone necrosis of the jaw. Dry mouth is the most common side effect. Saliva is critical for normal mouth functions like swallowing, to protect teeth from cavity causing bacteria, and also to protect from bacterial and fungal infections in the mouth. Saliva loss can lead to deep grooves on the tongue, difficulty in speaking, bad breath, oral soreness and burning, rampant caries and infections in the mouth.

Inflammation of the tissues in the mouth or mucositis is another side effect of cancer treatment, causing painful ulceration, in the mouth.This can sometimes cause the patient to quit eating and drinking, compromising the patient’s ability to fight cancer. Jaw bone necrosis or osteonecrosis is another side effect which is brought about by impaired capacity for the bone to heal. Necrosis of the jaw bone can happen if there is trauma to the jaw bone of patients who have had radiation treatment to the head and neck region or have taken bisphosphonates.

Caring for patients fighting cancer can be the most rewarding and challenging experience of a lifetime. It is important to understand the impact of cancer and cancer treatment on the teeth and tissues in the mouth.

homeowners, because of what we call the “fear factor”, insist upon its removal.

Removing an Acoustic Ceiling Removing “cottage cheese” ceilings has become an increasingly popular home improvement project. It’s unanimous; acoustic ceilings are out and virtually any other finish is in (smooth, textured, or wood).

The finish that is commonly referred to as “cottage cheese” is not a dairy product, but rather an acoustical ceiling treatment that was used widely in the 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s. While many builders continue to use it, it’s not nearly as popular as it once was.

The fact that the majority of the acoustic ceilings installed in this country prior to 1978 contained some level of asbestos has contributed to the popularity of acoustic ceiling removal. Notwithstanding the fact that most experts agree that even if the acoustical material does contain asbestos, it is best left alone (so long as the ceiling is in good condition and the material is not “friable” or flaky), many

Before you proceed with the “de-cottage cheesing” of your ceiling, it is a must to have a small sampling of the suspect material tested for asbestos content. A quick call to your local or regional public health agency, Consumer Products Safety Commission, or Environmental Protection Agency is the place to start.

These agencies have helpful consumer publications, which outline project basics.

They also often suggest a list of licensed testing labs that you may contact to have the material tested. There is no way that one can determine if the product contains asbestos with a naked eye examination.

If the material does contain asbestos and you opt to remove it, most states require that the material be removed by a licensed or certified abatement contractor who utilizes sophisticated means and equipment to protect your home and environment. Furthermore, the material must be disposed of in accordance with very strict government regulations.

Professional abatement can be very expensive because of the liability involved with this kind of work. If the material does not contain asbestos, then scraping the ceiling may be something that you might consider trying. Start by dampening the

ceiling with water using a pump garden sprayer. Be careful not to apply too much water or you could cause the drywall tape to peel away from the wallboard.

Once the ceiling is sufficiently damp, the acoustic material should scrape right off with very little effort. Use a drywall taping knife that has a blade between eight and twelve inches to scrape off the material.

After all of the acoustic material has been removed and the ceiling has had time to dry (a day or so), repairs can be made and the new finish can be applied.

Typically, any imperfections in the drywall are repaired with drywall joint compound and the surface is skimmed for a smooth finish, or a texture is applied which will help to disguise any imperfections that may remain.

Now, if this sounds like the kind of home improvement project that might tickle your fancy then we suggest that you give it a try. If on the other hand the only type of cottage cheese that you are willing to deal with is the edible type then we suggest that you consider employing a professional drywall contractor who will know just what to do.

We’re in the “Instantly” Market It’s been suggested that 90% of all prospective homebuyers start their home search online. Personally, I believe it to be closer to 100%. In today’s fast moving real estate environment, information and fast access to it is the key when it comes to buying and selling homes, and if you’re not using the right tools to get what you’re after, you may find that someone else has beat you to it and left you behind.

Now is Good! - Some of the more seasoned Real Estate Agents in the market may remember a day when you had to wait for the MLS catalog to be published and delivered. With this “heavy and valuable tool” in hand, they could now see other listings and promote their own. If a REALTOR® wanted to advertise their Client’s home, they needed to make sure it got submitted for publication in the next monthly issue. Wow! It’s almost unimaginable today that the system even worked. Today, however, we can move with speed placing homes on the MLS and our

various web sites in minutes. Realtors and buyers, use this information quickly to jump on opportunities and get the home they’re after. It’s not uncommon to visit a listing with a prospective client and have it go “pending” with another buyer before you get back to the office. Offers now can be submitted via the web while standing in the new living room. Homes get listed quickly, seen instantly, and sold instantly… at least in this market.

The Reality of Change - Have you placed an ad lately? The newspaper industry had no idea that their classified ad revenue would collapse when a guy named Craig started a free website from his apartment and called it “Craigslist.” Things have changed and the housing market is in the thick-of-it!

Buyers, as well as sellers, can find out what’s for sale, where, and for how much almost instantly. They can get a CMA (Comparative Market Analysis) to see what their current home is worth in minutes, and they can access the MLS (Multiple Listing Service) - a once highly protected and coveted database - through a number of websites offered by REALTORS® everywhere… including my own. You can drive down streets; see neighborhoods from above, view interior pictures, and compare prices with every other home on the market without ever leaving your laptop. Websites such as Zillow.com, REALTOR®.com, and

Trulia.com survive on the reality that people want information now, and they provide it.

Behind most every informative website, however, is a Real Estate Agent connected to the market. We may get to the transaction faster with instant access to current information, but you can’t rush making sure things are done right once your offer is accepted. Can we get information instantly? Yes. But Escrows still average 30-45 days. “Hurry up and wait” they told us in the military, I guess to some degree that still applies to us here today.
