WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?

Pesky Pests Gone In An Instant!

Here it is playoff time. The farmlands are still dry with no sign of rain in the forecast. Some of the local farmers have put a winter crop in the ground since the winter has yet to produce any showers and some say the drought is upon us. That being said, those little pests will probably be back before the summer months.

What a perfect time to look in on a local business that helps eliminate the problem of spiders, ants and other pesky little creatures that manage to make their home in yours.

Discovery Pest Control has 33 years of experience, 23 here in the East Bay. Having used their service several times before, this is an easy assignment. First and foremost, I have always found them to be

friendly, trustworthy and quick to respond. Their reputation around this area is solid and they are highly recommended by many of my friends. I think the thing I like most about them is there isn’t any pest they can’t handle.

Their motto “from baseboard to fence” really does cover it all. They take care of mice, spiders, ants, bees, termites, pigeons and even weeds. Like I said, there is nothing they can’t handle. In our case, it was bees and the problem was solved in one visit. They can come one time for an emergency or bi-monthly and monthly to keep ahead of any problems. I really like the fact that they can take care of weeds since that seems to be a big problem out here in the country.

They also service dairy farms and ranches by helping control those horrible flies. They use an organic larvae treatment that doesn’t harm the fowl or livestock. This is a big plus for those of us living next to a small ranch with horses.

Their service teams are friendly and always on time and the best part is, they always seem to know what type of bug you are talking about, even with explanations like “it was really big and had funny colored spots.”

No matter what the question, they have always been more than helpful with all of my calls.

One other plus is you can schedule an appointment online and know they will be there when they promised. And their prices are affordable and very competitive with other local pest control companies.

for mid-American families. Remember Henry Ford? And although this cost cutting ideology still holds true today most builders now commonly use taller baseboard, wider door trim and even a splash of crown molding now and then.

Be careful, in many cases the trim is an upgrade. Anyway, the pervasive use of woodwork lies primarily with luxury homebuilders. Those who have decided to improve rather than move (thank you lousy housing economy) are installing decorative trim to their existing home, adding freshness and pazzaz to their digs.

Add A Little Pazzaz One of the least expensive ways to enhance the beauty of your home is by adding a fresh coat of paint - even if it’s the same color. The next best way is by upgrading interior trim, decorative moldings and by applying woodwork to walls, windows, ceilings and doorways. Wherever it is placed, interior trim adds beauty and architectural interest to the space.

The most common types of interior trim are chair rails, wainscoting and raised panel molding on walls, casings around windows, baseboards where the walls meet the floor and cornice trim where the walls meet the ceiling. Crown molding is the most popular type of cornice trim today.

Interestingly, interior trim was born in classical Greek and Roman architecture (the reason most of it is so baroque).

Although it was originally used only for building exteriors, decorative molding made it to interiors by the time of the Renaissance. Does this mean if we have a bunch of interior molding in our home we are “Renaissance Men”? Anyway, fancy interior trim was popular all the way through the 1940’s and was standard in most commercial and residential construction. By the 1950’s the use of elaborate moldings and trim was nixed by subdivision builders who were attempting to build cost effective homes

Interior trim was originally made from plaster, but today it is commonly available in wood, particleboard and plastic and polycarbonate. Costs vary considerably depending on intricacy and size. Simple stock moldings start around a dollar per linear foot. Elaborate crown moldings may cost up to $15 per linear foot – or more – for moldings assembled from multiple pieces of trim. Broken Screw Prevents Repair Q. We were going to replace our hot and cold handles on our tub, but the screw head is broken. Now we cant get it off. It’s only on the one side, the cold handle. Any ideas? - Dave A. First, drill through the screw. Start by using a pin punch to make a countersink hole dead center in the exposed end of the broken screw. This will insure that the drill bit won’t wobble as you begin drilling.

The bit should be the same diameter as the screw (inside of thread to inside of thread). Once you have drilled the full depth of the screw, the handle will slip right off. Use a tap to clean the threads in the exposed valve stem. If the valve stem threads are damaged beyond repair the valve stem/assembly will have to be replaced. Make sure the house water is off before attempting this procedure. When the valve stem has been replaced, the existing screw hole will be ready to accept your new handle. By the way, while the water is off, why not replace both valves?

9 Steps For a Winter Ready Car

Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries.

Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

The last thing any driver needs is to break down in cold, harsh winter weather. A vehicle check now before winter arrives is a sensible way to be car care aware and avoid the inconvenience of being stranded out in the cold and with the unexpected expense of emergency repairs, says the Car Care Council.

“Winterizing your vehicle before the temperatures drop is a wise idea,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “An investment of an hour or two to have your vehicle checked is all it takes to have peace of mind and help avoid the cost and hassle of car trouble during severe weather.”

The Car Care Council recommends the following steps for winterizing your vehicle: If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter

Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.

Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid.

As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.

Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.

Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item.

Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

Motorists should also keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Drivers should check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.
