To those New Year’s resolutions of losing weight, what a great time to look in on a local business who can help get back on track and put you on the right road to better health.

Delta Valley Health Club is one of East Contra Costa County’s finest fitness centers.

The really neat part about getting this assignment is, I have watched the Club grow since it first opened. You know when you pull into the parking lot and see a variety of people going in and out of the main entrance; it is the place to be. As soon as you walk in the front door, not only are your greeted by a friendly staff, but it looks exactly like a place anyone would feel welcome.

I think one of the things that I like most about the Club is you can call, stop by or go on line and request a complimentary guest pass to check out the facility. They have been doing this for years and I can’t think of a better way to introduce anyone to their Club. Now, that being said, you can also go to their website to see videos of

They have a swimming pool, lap size, with lessons and aerobic classes, weight training, wellness counseling, fun fitness classes, rock climbing, massage, sauna & steam rooms, child care, preschool and personal trainers for everyone and every new state of the art type of exercise equipment you could imagine. The also have a brand new Small Team Training called MX4, it combines exciting workouts to help improve cardio fitness, power, strength and endurance. For a limited time you can try it for $49!

5 ‘Healthy’ New Year’s Resolutions Worth Giving Up While most New Year’s resolutions are well-intentioned, sometimes they look better on paper than in practice, actually doing more harm than good. Here are five so-called “healthy” resolutions worth giving up in 2018, as well as better solutions.

Resolution 1: I’m going to take up permanent residence in the gym. Working out is an important piece of the weight loss puzzle, but moderation is key. Studies suggest that too much exercise can lead to a number of issues like hormonal imbalance, fatigue, insomnia and even depression. Many people also report experiencing a drastic increase in appetite after extreme bouts of physical activity, which can lead to overeating and negate the weight-related benefits. Plus, if you exercise so intensely that you’re injured or sore for days, it will be difficult to sustain this otherwise healthy habit.

Resolution 2: I’m saying goodbye to fats completely. Fatty foods have gotten a bad rap. The reality is there are good fats and bad fats. In humans, fat helps support normal growth and development, provides energy, allows for proper cellular function, provides protective cushioning for organs, and helps with absorption of certain vitamins. Bad fats are found in foods like meat, butter, lard, cream and trans fats (found in baked goods, fried foods and margarine) and can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Aim to replace these with good fats, which are associated with a decreased risk of chronic disease. Good fats include plant-based oils like olive and canola, avocados, nuts, seeds, and dairy, since these also offer the nutrition your body needs.

Resolution 3: I’m going to skip breakfast to cut calories. According to The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, if you’re skipping breakfast, you’re doing something wrong. Research shows breakfast helps support brain function, energy and mood. And research suggests that people who eat breakfast consume fewer calories throughout the day, weigh less and have fewer risk factors for heart disease. Just a few reasons to load up in the a.m.

Resolution 4: I’ll just crash diet to lose the weight. Crash diets don’t work and many people who do them end up just gaining the weight back.

Dental Dangers of Marijuana Marijuana is a drug which is fast becoming a part of life for millions of Americans. While marijuana smokers lag far behind the estimated 36 million Americans who smoke tobacco, their numbers are rapidly rising. Medical marijuana is now legal in 28 states and recreational marijuana use is increasing in every segment of the population. A recent Gallup poll found that one in eight adults acknowledged puffing on pot. Seniors in particular are increasingly turning to medical marijuana as an effective alternative drug to get relief from the problems that typically affect their generation like insomnia or sleeplessness, arthritis, chronic pain and depression.

Cannabis is becoming more routinely accepted as a successful treatment for a variety of medical conditions so it is important for all of us to know about the problems it can cause in the mouth due to

frequent pot smoking. The dental danger common to both tobacco smoking and pot smoking comes from their shared link to inflammation. Undoubtedly some of the hundreds of compounds in cannabis stimulate the inflammatory process which is the culprit underlying to so many health issues. The most important one is periodontal disease deemed by the American Dental Association as the most common chronic disease. It is the major cause of tooth loss among adults. Marijuana is now considered a significant potential risk factor in the severity of periodontal disease along with factors like genetics, aging, diabetes, cigarette smoking and poor oral hygiene. A survey from the National Health and Nutrition Examination cited the relationship between cannabis and periodontal disease. Data showed they exhibited deeper pockets, more receding gums and greater odds of having severe periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is not the only oral manifestation of cannabis smoking. The most commonly found problems are severe xerostomia or dry mouth and throat dryness. This in turn leads to a dramatic increase in cavities in the teeth.

5 Things You Should Take Care of in the New Year The New Year is a time of renewal.

It’s traditionally a time when many people resolve to free themselves of bad or unwanted habits and to set their sights on more positive activities and practices. That’s a good thing.

We thought it fitting as you enter the New Year, that among your ‘other’ resolutions, you might want to consider making a few New Years resolutions for your home.

Unlike traditional personal resolutions that are typically embarked upon ‘cold turkey’ on the first day of the year, New Years resolutions for your home can consist of a doable list that you will work to accomplish throughout the coarse of the year.

The last thing that you want to do is sabotage yourself (and your partner or family) by setting unrealistic expectations both in terms of timing and budget. Your resolutions should consist of projects that can be accomplished during the year and utilizing available budget resources.

We have taken the liberty of suggesting five New Years resolutions for your home.

They consist of five general tasks – in order of importance — that we believe apply to most homes and that you should consider before endeavoring to create your dream bath or gourmet kitchen – though they are great resolutions for sure.

• Safety – The best ‘home’ resolution that you can make in the New Year is to make your home safer for yourself and your family. Check to make sure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are properly installed and in good working

order. Test them regularly. Check major appliances for proper operation. Fuel burning appliances should be properly vented to the exterior and gas connections should be checked for leaks. Make sure that your electrical system is safe and in good working order. Flickering lights, burned fuses and popping breakers are signs of a problem. Make sure that handrails, grab bars and other safety devices are properly anchored. Consider hiring a home inspector for a more thorough report.

• Preventative Maintenance – One of the best things that you can do for your budget in the New Year is to prevent small maintenance projects from becoming BIG repair nightmares with equally BIG bills!

Our dad’s mantra; ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ has as much meaning today as it did when we first heard it as children. Repairing a leaking roof, sealing gaps in siding, painting bare wood, replacing damaged decking, patching cracks in concrete, caulking around sinks, tubs and showers and other preventative maintenance tasks will keep your home in tip top shape and save you lots of money in the long run.

• Conserving Energy — A New Years resolution that should be on everyone’s list is conserving energy. Utility bills have gone through the roof and it doesn’t look like relief is anywhere in sight. Thus, one’s best defense is a strong offense. This one won’t cost an arm and a leg to do and you can perform most of the work yourself. Some energy conserving upgrades to consider: install a programmable thermostat; replace incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent lighting; prevent drafts with weather stripping around doors and windows, install low flow shower heads and aerators; fix leaking faucets; install Energy Star appliances; install energy efficient heating and cooling equipment; upgrade insulation and install replacement windows.

• Go Green – Kermit the frog coined the phrase; ‘it isn’t easy being green.’ However, when it comes to your home, being ‘green’ or environmentally conscious is easier than ever as more building product manufacturers produce green products.

Create a special place in the garden as a retreat. Add a water feature – the sound of trickling water can be very therapeutic.

Can I Terminate My Bypass Trust?

We get this question all the time! It is a great question and yes, there are ways to terminate bypass trusts that are no longer necessary and are administratively burdensome.

Question (1): What is a bypass trust?

A bypass trust is an estate-planning tool that is used to create a separate irrevocable trust after the death of the first spouse. Some trusts provide that while the surviving spouse is entitled to unlimited income from the bypass trust assets, there are certain limits and restrictions placed on the surviving spouse with regard to the bypass trust principal.

Prior to 2012, bypass trusts were commonly used to assist families in minimizing estate taxes. However, now that Congress has drastically increased the federal estate tax exemption, most families find that the bypass trust is no longer necessary for their family.

Question (2): I do not think my family needs a bypass trust. How can I get rid of it?

The easiest way to remove the bypass trust provision is by amending or restating the estate plan while both spouses are alive. If both spouses are living and have capacity, then this provision can be easily removed.

However, if one spouse has already passed or if the bypass trust was already established after the death of the first spouse, terminating the bypass trusts requires a couple more steps, including receiving court approval. To approve the termination of the bypass trust, the court requires unanimous consent from the surviving spouse and all bypass trust beneficiaries.

While terminating the bypass trust is more work after the death of the first spouse, it is often beneficial for some families in which the surviving spouse would like unrestricted access to the bypass trust funds. Additionally, terminating the mandatory bypass trust also can help reduce administrative costs associated with the bypass trust and eliminate capital gain taxes which would be due after the death of the surviving spouse.

Please also note that some families may still wish to establish the bypass trust after the death of the first spouse because of their unique family structure. For example,

bypass trusts are sometimes implemented in blended family situations in which each spouse has children from a prior marriage.

There are also other reasons that some families may wish to keep their mandatory bypass trust that should be discussed with an attorney.
