DISCOVER AN ELEVATED MONTGOMERY: WHERE HISTORIC LEGACY MEETS MODERN MOMENTUM

It’s my honor to welcome you to Montgomery— Alabama’s capital city, and a place where history, hope and hospitality come together in unforgettable ways.
Montgomery’s impact on the world is undeniable. Here, pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement unfolded, setting the course for a better future. Today, that powerful legacy continues through sites like the Rosa Parks Museum and the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, as well as the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Sites—The Legacy Museum, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Freedom Monument Sculpture Park and recently opened Montgomery Square—places that tell the full story of our nation’s journey, with honesty, dignity and hope.
But Montgomery isn’t just about remembering the past. It’s about experiencing it firsthand and feeling how it shapes who we are today. From our world-class museums and historic neighborhoods to our vibrant downtown, riverfront attractions, live music, festivals, dynamic arts scene, sports, outdoor activities and, of course, some good ol’ Southern dining, there’s too much to do to just drive through
With a major attraction recognized on Time magazine’s list of The World’s Greatest Places of 2024, you’ll want to slow down, stay for a while

and truly experience all that makes this city unforgettable. Spend a few days walking the same streets that made history, hearing the voices that continue to inspire change and discovering the spirit of resilience that still defines us.
Thank you for choosing to visit Montgomery. We are proud to share our story with you—and honored to have you become part of it.

Montgomery, Alabama, has long been a city where the past speaks loudly, but today it’s finding new ways to sing. In 2026, the “birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement” is undergoing a sophisticated civic renaissance. From the crack of a wooden bat at DABOS Park, formerly Riverwalk Stadium, to the quiet halls of a new world-class research library, the city is unveiling a suite of attractions that invite families to explore, reflect and gather in style.
At the heart of this newfound transformation is the Elevation Convening Center and Hotel. Having opened its doors in the fall of 2025, this landmark Equal Justice Initiative project is far more than a place to rest your head— it’s an excellent starting point for those looking to explore Montgomery and a space for locals looking to elevate their everyday fitness and dining experiences.
The story of the Elevation Hotel began in 1950, when the structure first rose as the Hilltop Arms Apartments. After decades of change, new life has been breathed into these historic walls, converting the former apartment complex into a premier destination for visitors from across the globe to enjoy.
The hotel features 99 guest rooms, including spacious suites designed with modern amenities in mind. But

the experience extends well beyond your room. For those looking to dive deeper into local history, the library area provides a quiet sanctuary for research, while the fellow Legacy Sites offer on-site art galleries and rotating programs that celebrate the intersection of art and social change.
Culinary enthusiasts will find plenty to savor here as well. AYA Soulful Dining is the hotel’s flagship restaurant, offering a masterfully curated fusion of African, Caribbean and Southern flavors. For a more casual bite, the Elevation Cafe serves up artisanal coffee, freshly baked goods and handcrafted sandwiches— perfect for a quick lunch before heading out to explore the city.

Even the locals have a reason to visit; the building houses a top-of-the-line fitness center, which is available to the public through a membership program. With its versatile convening spaces, the center is poised to become the city’s primary hub for thoughtful dialogue and community gatherings.
Just a short distance away, the Museum of Alabama has unveiled a spectacular series of renovations that make history feel tangible for the next generation. The star of the show is the newly renovated Children’s Gallery, an interactive wonderland where younger visitors can engage with Alabama’s story through play and discovery.
Adults and history buffs will be equally moved by the new Alabama Military Stories gallery, which honors the diverse experiences of Alabamians who served in the armed forces. Upon entering the lobby, visitors are greeted by a dynamic new sculpture. This centerpiece was inspired by the renowned quilters of Gee’s Bend, whose geometric textile art has become a symbol of Alabama’s enduring spirit.

The city’s sports history is also getting a major upgrade. Coming soon to our historic baseball stadium—home of the Montgomery Biscuits—is The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum Annex.
This permanent exhibit will be a new landmark among Montgomery’s civil rights attractions, illustrating how the baseball diamond was often a front line in the struggle for equality. By highlighting the legends of the Negro
leagues, the annex tells a story of athletic excellence and resilience that resonates with fans of all ages.
Perhaps the most poignant addition to the city’s growing landscape is Montgomery Square, the fourth official Legacy Site in Montgomery. This new site commemorates the pivotal decade from 1955 to 1965—a period that saw the courage of the Montgomery Bus Boycott
and the historic Selma to Montgomery March. The square is a blend of a park and a memorial, using sculpture and art to tell the personal stories of the everyday residents who participated in the movement. It provides a dedicated space to honor those who marched, organized and sacrificed, ensuring that their names and faces are never forgotten.
Whether you are a lifelong Alabamian or a first-time visitor, Montgomery’s newest attractions offer a myriad of marvelous experiences that truly make you feel at home. From the soulful, comforting plates at AYA to the quiet spaces of remembrance throughout the city, it’s clear that progress and preservation are walking hand in hand here.
There is a new kind of energy in the air—a warmth that invites you to slow down and stay awhile. You’ll find it in the light hitting a sculpture or the friendly hum of a neighborhood cafe. This year, we invite you to walk these paths, explore our exhibits and witness a city that continues to uplift its story for the world to see. It’s a beautiful time to gather your loved ones and discover how Montgomery is growing, one story and one shared meal at a time.

Explore Montgomery, and you’ll quickly discover this is more than a city—it’s a beacon of courage, conviction and resilience.
Here, history lives in neighborhoods, sanctuaries and the stories still being told. You’re invited not only to witness the power of individuals to effect change, but to engage with Montgomery’s past in ways that leave a lasting imprint.
Stand where Rosa Parks refused to surrender her seat, and imagine the equal bravery of 15-year-old Claudette Colvin, who challenged injustice months earlier. Walk down Dexter Avenue, hearing the echoes of voices that carried Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for justice. In Montgomery, you don’t simply read about history—you experience it.
This is the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, yet Montgomery’s story stretches far beyond a single era. Long before the fight for equality, the Wright brothers selected the city as the site
of the nation’s first civilian flight school. From Civil War legacies to the soulful sound of Hank Williams, from the bravery of the Freedom Riders to the transformative work of the Equal Justice Initiative, Montgomery weaves a story that can only be fully understood by being here.
Some truths are too powerful to be tucked away. That’s why The Legacy Museum, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Freedom Monument Sculpture Park and Montgomery Square were created by the Equal Justice Initiative. These transformative spaces confront the history of enslavement, racial terror, lynching and mass incarceration with honesty and grace. The newly opened Elevation Convening Center and Hotel expands this experience further, offering spaces for reflection, dialogue and wellness, steps from The National Memorial for Peace and Justice and Montgomery Square.
IN MONTGOMERY, YOU DON’T SIMPLY READ ABOUT HISTORY—YOU EXPERIENCE IT.

At the Rosa Parks Museum, one act of quiet courage continues to inspire generations. A quick walk brings you

to the Rosa Parks Statue on Dexter Avenue, which marks the corner where she altered history. Not far from downtown, the Holt Street Baptist Church still echoes with the voice of a young Dr. King, who first rallied a crowd during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Movements are born in sanctuaries as much as in public spaces.
Centennial Hill offers a deeper look at the people and places that shaped the movement. Explore the Dexter Parsonage Museum, where Dr. King lived with his
family, or visit the Dr. Richard Harris House, a refuge for Freedom Riders. Guided tours highlight hidden stories and living legacies that continue to inspire. Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church remains a spiritual and symbolic cornerstone of the movement, connecting the past to the present.
Montgomery’s story also extends beyond civil rights. At the Hank Williams Museum, visitors can trace the roots of country music and see the spot where Williams often wrote lyrics: sitting in Chris’ Famous Hot Dogs, a more than 100-year-old eatery still thriving on Dexter Avenue. Montgomery also nurtured literary geniuses: F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, lived in the city for a time, and a museum at their former home celebrates their contributions to the arts.
Other must-see sites include the Freedom Rides Museum, housed in a once-segregated Greyhound bus station; the First White House of the Confederacy; Old Alabama Town, with preserved 19th-century buildings; and the Alabama Department of Archives and History, chronicling centuries of cultural transformation. Together, these destinations create a full spectrum of history and culture—trials and triumphs, resilience and creativity.
Montgomery isn’t a day trip. It’s a journey that unfolds slowly and stays with you. Stay overnight to fully absorb the city’s stories, enjoy chef-driven Southern cuisine and experience hospitality that welcomes you like family. Here, the past is not just preserved. It is present. And when you visit, you become part of the story.

Montgomery, Alabama, is a city where history is the foundation, but art is the heartbeat. To walk its streets is to navigate a living gallery, where the past harmonizes with the creative energy of the present. Whether you are drawn to the quiet dignity of a world-class oil painting, the electric thrill of a live blues set or the whimsical charm of neighborhood theater, Montgomery offers a multi-faceted landscape that invites everyone to play a part. This is not a city that asks you to merely observe art from behind a velvet rope—Montgomery invites you to step inside the frame.

Your journey begins in the lush expanse of Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF). While its name pays homage to the Bard, this internationally acclaimed theater—the State Theatre of Alabama— is a sprawling hive of diversity. With a repertoire that spans from timeless classical masterpieces to contemporary narratives, ASF offers a world-class theatrical experience. The architecture itself, inspired by the English countryside, provides a majestic backdrop for a family picnic before the curtain rises on one of their two stages, the Festival Stage or the intimate Octagon.
Just a short stroll away sits the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA). This is a sanctuary for the visual senses, housing an impressive collection of American art, delicate glasswork (including a significant collection of Studio Glass) and other masterpieces. The museum is particularly beloved for its ArtWorks gallery—an interactive space where younger visitors can roll up their sleeves and discover their own inner Picasso. Outside, the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden offers a serene wander through large-scale works that change with the shifting Alabama light.
For those who prefer the precision of movement and the swell of a violin, the Montgomery Ballet and the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra represent the pinnacle

of local performance. As the only professional ballet company in the city, the Montgomery Ballet brings ethereal grace to the stage, blending classical technique with modern storytelling. Meanwhile, the symphony’s Jubilee Pops concerts are a true city highlight. These free performances on the lawn of the Alabama Department of Archives and History strip away the formality of the concert hall, offering a welcoming atmosphere for community gatherings filled with music. Just don’t forget your picnic basket.
While the large institutions provide the anchor, Montgomery’s soul is found in its boutique galleries and community spaces. The Georgine Clarke Alabama Artists Gallery, located within the Alabama State Council on the Arts in the RSA Tower, is a dedicated window into the talent blooming across the state.
The King’s Canvas stands as a beacon of creative empowerment. Located on the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, this is more than just a gallery; it’s a studio space designed to provide underrepresented artists with the tools and platform they need to thrive. It’s a place where art is recognized as a tool for social change and community building— not to mention a must-visit for anyone who wants to see the authentic pulse of Montgomery’s future.
For a classic gallery-hopping experience, SAC’s Gallery (Society of Arts & Crafts) offers a charming array of local handiwork. As a nonprofit founded in 1974, it affords local artisans the opportunity to display and sell original works, from pottery and mixed media to fine paintings. It’s the perfect spot to find a one-of-a-kind treasure that carries the spirit of the South home with you.
You can’t talk about Montgomery without talking about the music that shaped the world. The city’s sonic landscape is a mix
of grit and soul. B.B. King’s Blues Club, located at Wind Creek Casino, brings the legendary sounds of Memphis to Montgomery, offering a high-energy atmosphere where the ribs are as smoky as the guitar riffs. It’s a place for celebration, where the dance floor is rarely empty, hosting everything from classic soul to rock ‘n’ roll.
For a more tucked-away, authentic experience, Jerry’s Juke Joint on Bibb Street offers a slice of pure Americana. This landmark site features neon signs, walls lined with guitars and a cozy mezzanine perfect for private events with an unobstructed view of the main stage. If your tastes lean toward the eclectic and the underground, The Sanctuary is your destination. Located in a repurposed church on South Goldthwaite Street, this community arts venue hosts everything from line dancing to monthly drum circles, proving that Montgomery’s arts scene is as edgy as it is traditional.
For grander touring acts and Broadwaystyle spectacles, the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre is the city’s premier modern stage. Located conveniently downtown as part of the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel complex, this 1,800-seat facility hosts a rotating calendar of world-renowned musicians, comedians and theatrical tours.
Montgomery has long been a muse for the written word and the country ballad. The Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to the lives of this iconic Jazz Age couple. Located in the very house where they lived in the early 1930s on Felder Avenue, the museum offers an intimate look at their glamorous, turbulent lives through personal artifacts, manuscripts and even Zelda’s own paintings.
Down the road, the mood shifts from jazz to the “lonesome whippoorwill.” The Hank Williams Museum and nearby

Hank Williams Statue honor the man who defined country music. With his 1952 Baby Blue Cadillac on display and a treasure trove of memorabilia, the museum is a pilgrimage site for music lovers. It tells the story of a local boy who became a global legend, reminding us all that Montgomery’s influence reaches far beyond the city limits.
You don’t even have to step indoors to appreciate the city’s aesthetic. Montgomery’s outdoor mural art has transformed downtown, westside and midtown into an open-air museum. These large-scale works, like “A Mighty Walk from Selma” and the “Citizen Mural,” celebrate everything from the bravery of the Civil Rights Movement to local community pride. Following the self-guided mural trail is a wonderful way for families to explore the city at their own pace.
If your visit falls during the spring, the Flimp Festival at the MMFA is a quintessential Montgomery experience. Held in the sculpture garden, this whimsical celebration of imagination and creativity turns the grounds into a kaleidoscope of artful activities, live music and outdoor games, perfect for families and young children.
For the cinephile, the Capri Theatre is a local treasure. As Alabama’s longest continually operating movie theater, located in the heart of Old Cloverdale, it offers a curated selection of independent, foreign and classic films. Since its 1941 opening as the Clover Theatre, it has been saved and restored by the community, offering a cozy, 200-seat experience that celebrates the art of film.
From the quiet contemplation of a Fitzgerald manuscript to the foot-stomping joy of a blues set, Montgomery is a city that understands the power of the arts to connect us. Its galleries are not just rooms full of objects; they are conversations. Its stages are not just platforms; they are mirrors of the human experience.
Whether you’re here for a weekend or a lifetime, we invite you to immerse yourself in local art and culture that serve as the foundation for Montgomery. Walk the mural-lined streets, listen to the symphony under the stars and let the spirit of our artists inspire you. Here, the canvas is always open, and the next great performance is just around the corner. Come and see how a city with so much history is busy painting an even brighter future.

Downtown Montgomery is best experienced on foot. Within just a few walkable streets, visitors can access some of the city’s most powerful landmarks, celebrated dining, riverfront views and nightlife that keeps the energy going well after sunset.
Begin your stroll at the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Sites, internationally renowned destinations that anchor downtown with deep meaning and thoughtful design. (Shuttle and boat services make it easy to navigate between the sites.) Riverfront Park offers green space, scenic views and relaxing cruises. And the Harriott II is an easy and fun way to slow down and take in the Alabama River while you’re here.

Downtown is also Montgomery’s museum hub. The Rosa Parks Museum and the Hank Williams Museum sit just steps apart, allowing you to blend civil rights history with music heritage. When it’s time for a break, grab a coffee at Prevail Union, named one of The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops, or explore Old Alabama Town, a preserved collection of historic buildings offering a glimpse into 19thcentury Alabama life, today.
As night falls, downtown comes alive. Enjoy live music at The Exchange bar or 23 Court Cigar & Whiskey Bar, rooftop dining at Waterworks atop Trilogy Hotel, cocktails at Bar Attico or nightlife overlooking the river at Red Bluff Bar at the Silos. With acclaimed local restaurants like Central, Ravello Ristorante and SaZa Serious Italian in The Alley— plus the newly opened Elevation Convening Center and Hotel—everything you need is right here. Even Montgomery Whitewater sits adjacent, making downtown Montgomery a walkable destination that truly has it all.

Searching for an opportunity to simultaneously savor mouthwatering cuisine and the city’s beauty? Look no further…
In many ways, Montgomery is a city that speaks through its cooks and kitchens. While our streets are steeped in history, our dining rooms represent a flavorful, living map of the globe.
You don’t need a boarding pass or a suitcase to experience the zest of Mexico, the aromatic spices of India or the refined elegance of the Italian coast. In fact, you never even have to set foot on a plane. In Montgomery, a trip “around the world” is as simple as
following savory smells and taking a drive across town. It’s time to let your taste buds do the traveling, all from the comfort of your favorite city.
Think of it as our very own city-wide culinary pavilion—a place where tasty global traditions meet good ol’ Southern hospitality. Whether you’re craving the soul of the deep South or the bold flair of international waters, this guide is your personal passport to all the best bites in the city.

This journey is about way more than just satisfying a simple craving—it’s an invitation to celebrate the diverse cultures that have woven their stories into the fabric (and taste buds) of our community. As you navigate from one neighborhood to the next, you’ll discover that each plate tells a story of heritage, travel and the universal joy of sharing a meal with one another. Much like the famous international showcases seen at global festivals, our local eateries offer an immersive experience that engages all the senses. You might find yourself surrounded by the vibrant colors of a Caribbean market in one moment and the sleek, modern lines of a European bistro the next.
The beauty of Montgomery’s food scene lies in its accessibility and its heart. These aren’t just restaurants, they’re the dreams of families and chefs who have brought their secrets from afar to enrich our local table. From the sizzle of a Korean grill to the slow simmer of a Southern pot of greens, every kitchen offers a unique lesson in flavor. This guide ensures you won’t miss a single “stamp” on your culinary passport, guiding you through a curated selection of world-class dining that proves you can satisfy your wanderlust without ever leaving the 334.
Our journey begins with the sophisticated flavors of Europe. For those who dream of a classy candlelit dinner in a Parisian bistro, Frenchie’s offers a charming escape. This cozy spot captures the essence of French dining with a menu that prioritizes technique and atmosphere, making it a perfect destination for a romantic evening or an elevated lunch.
If your heart beats for the Mediterranean, Montgomery’s Italian scene is nothing short of spettacolare. Ravello Ristorante brings the sundrenched spirit of the Amalfi Coast right to downtown. With its breathtaking architecture and a focus on fresh,
authentic coastal Italian cuisine, it is a true masterclass in dining as an art form. For a more rustic, neighborhood feel, La Trattoria provides the comforting embrace of traditional Italian fare. From perfectly sauced pastas to artisanal pizzas, it’s the kind of place where every meal feels like a cozy Sunday family gathering.
Heading south of the border (but staying within city limits, of course), Montgomery offers an exquisite array of Latin flavors to taste test. El Rey Burrito Lounge is a local institution known for its eclectic vibe and creative takes on Mexican classics. It’s a spot where the atmosphere is just as spicy and colorful as the burritos. And don’t forget your extra side of freshmade guacamole!
For a taste of traditional Mexican soul with a modern twist, Little Donkey serves up authentic dishes crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The Southern soul of each item makes for fresh and flavorful bites. Whether you choose the burrito with smoked brisket, the pork nachos or a classic chicken taco, you’re in for a genuine treat.
However, if you want a truly unique “passport” experience, D’Road Cafe is a must-visit. Specializing in Venezuelan cuisine, this hidden gem introduces diners to the delights of arepas, empanadas and other delicious South American staples. The warmth of the service is matched only by the richness of the food, offering a culinary window into a culture that values bold spices and heartfelt cooking from pan to plate.
The trek continues eastward as we explore the diverse and aromatic landscapes of Asian cuisine. Railroad Thai offers a dining experience like no other, situated in a beautifully repurposed historic train station. The setting is as remarkable as the menu,

which features balanced, authentic Thai dishes that range from savory curries to fiery stir-fries.
For those who crave the complex layers of Indian spices, Montgomery boasts two standout destinations. Saffron Indian Kitchen provides a modern, polished take on classic Indian dishes, focusing on specialized flavors and beautiful presentation. Meanwhile, India Palace offers a traditional and deeply comforting experience, with a menu that spans all your favorites—from tandoori and samosa to specialties and buttery naans.
If you’re looking for a meal that is as much an activity as it is a feast, Kalim Korean BBQ is the answer. This interactive dining experience brings the traditional Korean grill right to your table. It’s a perfect spot for families and groups, where the sizzle of the meat and the array of colorful banchan—also known as side dishes—create a celebratory and communal atmosphere.
For a taste of the Caribbean, look no further than Island Delight. Specializing in the vivacious flavors of Jamaica, this spot is famous for its jerk seasoning, roti and beef oxtail. It’s a tropical getaway on a plate, bringing the heat and the heart of the islands to the heart of sweet home Alabama.
In the spirit of continuing the theme of soulful, island-inspired cooking with a unique twist, Indo Bistro & Grill offers a fusion of flavors that are difficult to categorize but impossible to forget. Traditional dishes, from curries to sizzling satays and fresh salads, reflect the traditions of Indonesia. Authentic flavors result.
No culinary tour of Montgomery would be complete without returning to the roots of Southern cooking. This is the food that built the city, and it remains a vital part of our identity today. Martha’s Place Buffet
is a legendary stop for anyone seeking the “meat and three” experience. Here, the fried chicken is golden, the vegetables are seasoned to perfection, and the hospitality makes you feel like family. Go ahead, we won’t judge if you fill up your plate for a second—or third… or fourth—time.
When it comes to barbecue, Montgomery is home to pitmasters, pit bosses and smoked-to-perfection plates. Brenda’s Bar-Be-Que Pit is a historic landmark with deep ties to the community and the Civil Rights Movement. Since opening in 1942, their wood-fired meats have been a staple for generations. For a different, but equally iconic taste, Dreamland BBQ brings its world-famous ribs and “nothing but the sauce” philosophy to downtown Montgomery. The atmosphere is casual, the napkins are plenty, and the flavor is unmatched in this barbecue-classic location.
Finally, for an elevated take on Southern ingredients, Vintage Year and Central

stand as premier destinations for fine and fresh dining. Utilizing hand-cut meats, locally sourced produce and decades of culinary expertise, these restaurants transform Alabama’s bounty into worldclass cuisine. They are the perfect places to see how Montgomery’s local flavors can stand proudly alongside any dish from around the globe.
Montgomery is a city that invites you to pull up a seat at the table, settle in and fill your plate. Our dining scene is a testament to the fact that, while we may come from different corners of the world, we have one thing in common—we all speak the language of a good meal. Whether you’re seeking the refinement of a French bistro or the smoky comfort of an Alabama barbecue pit, your next great adventure is just a forkful away.
As you finish your journey through our local culinary pavilion, you’ll realize
these flavors do more than just fill your belly—they build bridges. Each restaurant mentioned in our guide serves as a tiny embassy, representing the traditions and hospitality of its homeland while embracing the warmth of our Alabama heritage. This unique fusion creates a dining atmosphere that is both worldly and welcoming, sophisticated yet entirely approachable for diners of all ages and walks of life.

If you had one perfect day to show off Montgomery to a first-time visitor, where would you take them and why?
I would start with breakfast at one of our locally owned spots like Hilltop Public House, Mama’s Sack Lunches or Prevail Union, then explore downtown’s riverfront, Montgomery Whitewater, Equal Justice Initiative and other historical scenery. For lunch, head to Cloverdale to Filet & Vine, then over to Alabama Shakespeare Festival and The Shoppes at EastChase. Finally, cocktail pre-game at 23 Court Cigar & Whiskey Bar, Bar Attico, The Gin or Rick E’s before dinner at La Jolla, Central, Ravello Ristorante or The Pub
How does Montgomery’s history and culture influence the way you approach your work in hospitality?
There is no city in the South richer in history than Montgomery. We strive to stand out with the warmest welcome to folks from everywhere. I strive to leave some of the most lasting impressions and memories to guests that make them want to return.
What’s something visitors are always surprised to learn or experience about Montgomery once they arrive?
We are a city that can offer some of the most amazing dining, nightlife, attractions and history that can rival the bigger markets around. Montgomery sets a big standard with a warm and welcoming vibe.

What do you love most about welcoming visitors to Montgomery, and what makes our hospitality feel uniquely Southern?
It is always a pleasure to welcome visitors to Montgomery, because you can amaze them with the history of our city from the Civil War to civil rights. Most visitors see Montgomery as a historic site of three main events: the bus boycott, the freedom rides and the Selma to Montgomery March. We are so uniquely Southern, because we can showcase an amazing variety of Southern culture and foods.
What’s one local spot—whether it’s a restaurant, park, museum or hidden gem—that you always recommend to guests?
One of the most amazing hidden gems that I would recommend is Centennial Hill. This is probably the most historic neighborhood for civil rights in the city.
What’s something visitors are always surprised to learn or experience about Montgomery once they arrive?
Most are surprised to learn of the history of Harriet Tubman and the Civil War; the first electric streetcar; and other “firsts” that took place in Montgomery.

What’s one local spot—whether it’s a restaurant, park, museum or hidden gem—that you always recommend to guests?
One place I always recommend is the Alabama Shakespeare Festival Obviously, I’m a little biased because I work there, but it really is one of the nation’s cultural gems. A lot of people are surprised to learn that we have one of the largest Shakespeare theaters in the country right here in Alabama. The park around it is beautiful, it’s a great place to experience the arts in Montgomery.
How does Montgomery’s history and culture influence the way you approach your work in hospitality?
I try to make sure visitors feel welcomed and connected, because when people feel that connection they remember the place differently. Montgomery’s culture is built on storytelling, and in a lot of ways my job is helping create the setting where those stories can be shared.
What moment, interaction or guest story has reminded you why you’re proud to work in Montgomery’s hospitality industry?
One of my favorite moments is when someone comes to a show not knowing what to expect and then afterwards, they’re just completely blown away and energized by it. Moments like that remind me that what we do really does matter.

How does Montgomery’s history and culture influence the way you approach your work in hospitality?
Montgomery’s history carries weight, and I try to approach hospitality with that in mind. It’s important to create experiences that are not only fun and memorable, but also respectful and meaningful. The culture here is rooted in storytelling, resilience and community. That shows up in how we connect people to both the past and present of Montgomery.
What moment, interaction or guest story has reminded you why you’re proud to work in Montgomery’s hospitality industry?
One of the most rewarding moments is seeing someone try something new for the first time at Montgomery Whitewater and leave with a completely different perspective of both them and the city. Whether it’s a family spending the day together, someone overcoming a fear on the water or a field trip group experiencing something brand new, those moments stick with you. It’s a reminder that what we’re offering is more than an experience; it’s something people carry with them long after they leave.
What’s something visitors are always surprised to learn or experience about Montgomery once they arrive?
Visitors are often surprised by how much there is to do and how dynamic the city feels. Once they arrive, they quickly realize Montgomery is full of energy, culture and plenty of opportunities for adventure, all while still holding onto the character and history that make it so meaningful.

If you had one perfect day to show off Montgomery to a first-time visitor, where would you take them and why?
My one perfect day to show off Montgomery to a first-time visitor would start with a tour of The Legacy Sites because of all the history represented in The Legacy Museum
What’s one local spot—whether it’s a restaurant, park, museum, or hidden gem—that you always recommend to guests?
A hidden gem in Montgomery is J.W. Beverette’s Soul Food restaurant. It’s a great place to get meat and three sides.
How does Montgomery’s history and culture influence the way you approach your work in hospitality?
Montgomery’s history and culture influence the way I approach hospitality, because I have to convey to visitors that the city’s history started with Native Americans to slavery, then the Civil War to civil rights. Montgomery is known as the cradle of the Confederacy and the birthplace of civil rights, so I try to encompass all of those aspects when I talk to visitors.

Whether you’ve found yourself standing in awe as planes zipped overhead—or you’ve zipped by the annex yourself on your way into downtown—it’ll come as no surprise that Montgomery is home to the 42nd Air Base Wing of the U.S. Air Force.
What many people don’t realize is just how historic Maxwell Air Force Base is. Montgomery’s connection to aviation and education goes way back—starting in 1910, when Wilbur Wright opened the first civilian flight school in the United States, right here.
Flight training quickly became a vital part of life at Maxwell Field, as the base helped prepare generations of airmen for service around the world. From Allied pilots in World War II to the groundbreaking Tuskegee Airmen, many aviation heroes trained in Montgomery. Even civil rights icons like Rosa and Raymond Parks worked on the grounds, adding another layer of significance to the site.

That legacy of service, courage and community continues today— not just in the skies, but in the way Montgomery honors its military roots. Events like the Red Tails Classic and the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl bring football and military pride together. The Red Tails Classic kicks off college football season with a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen and celebrates HBCU excellence, while the Salute to Veterans Bowl honors active

duty and retired service members with a game full of patriotic spirit in the Cramton Bowl.
We are proud to look around us and still see military members in our midst! If you live on the base or are in the armed forces and visiting our area—thank you for what you do—and please check out the many discounts and activities available to you.

Elevation Convening Center and Hotel

Centrally located in the southeast, Montgomery is extremely easy to access for those attending your convention. And yes, it’s true—once your attendees arrive, they’ll have countless activities to choose from, no matter what your group is interested in.
Are you organizing something for outdoor enthusiasts? Putting together your company’s annual holiday reunion? Planning a career-focused conference? It doesn’t matter what you’ve got in mind, because there’s no bad season or bad reason to plan an event in the capital city.
But location and vocation shouldn’t be your only motivation. Ease of planning and booking should also be top of mind. And that’s where our team comes in. We
can help you with everything from preconvention planning (think: contacting venues and hotels to schedule site visits) to registration, promotion and local publicity. Once you see how many things are getting checked off your list, you’ll feel like your event planning team just doubled.
Need promotional materials? You can trust us to help. Plus, we can get you set up with copies of this destination guide and with event calendars. After all, you’ll want your attendees to be in the loop on all the fun they have to look forward to in Montgomery.
What are you waiting for? Visiting our website and submitting your request for proposal is as easy as locating Montgomery on a map!
