Tomatinos

How to Speak Southern

Chris’ Hot Dogs

n For a bite of Montgomery and a mouthful of history, grab a few napkins and get your hands around a hot dog from Chris’ Hot Dogs on Dexter Avenue. This legendary diner marked by the green-and-white-striped awning opened on May 1, 1917. It’s now being run by the second and third generations of its founding family. You can get a hamburger here, but the signature dish is a Hot Dog “All the Way,” a dog drenched in Chris’ secret sauce, mustard and kraut. D J

Collard Greens: Basically, collards are the southern equivalent to kale, but instead of blending up these leafy greens into smoothies, they're usually slowcooked with pork fat for hours before serving. Considered a must have on New Years Day, along with black-eyed peas, to bring good luck in the New Year.

Cucos Downtown

n Cucos is the place to fill up on TexMex standards like tacos, burritos and quesadillas. If you’re feeling famished, eat like a world leader by ordering this cozy eatery’s signature dish, the El Presidente. It includes cheese-smothered enchiladas, rice and refried black beans, crunchy chimichangas and a taco, all served with never-ending chips and salsa. D

The capital city isn’t just cool for people, it’s cool for canines too. Check out these pet-friendly places that are happy to accommodate your four-legged friend. EAT: Tomatinos, Cafe Loiusa and Midtown Pizza Kitchen have outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. WHERE EVERYONE MATTERS

One of Alabama’s fi st “planned communities,” Prattville is proud of its past and enjoying its present — looking ahead to even better times Just 13 miles north of Montgomery, Prattville is a city with multiple personalities that work together to create a place that’s earned itself the name “the Preferred Community.” The city was modeled after a New England village, yet has all the hospitality and warmth indicative of its deep-South locale. Although ranked as one of the fastest growing areas in Alabama, Prattville maintains a quaint charm, and its close-knit, small-town atmosphere belies the many metropolitan opportunities and modern amenities offe ed. It’s a harmonious marriage of seeming opposites that’s made its residents swell with hometown pride and eager to welcome everyone to their special spot in Central Alabama’s River Region.

”

Our neighborly feel and sense of place make Prattville such a great city to live in or just to visit. Patty Vanderwal, President, Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce

A History of Industry In 1818, Autauga County was established a full year before Alabama even became a state. The area got its big boost when, in 1835, the city’s namesake, New Hampshire native and industrialist Daniel Pratt, bought nearly 2,000 acres at the fall line of Autauga Creek, the area that is now downtown Prattville. Pratt established a town and began manufacturing his cotton gins, and his company quickly became the foremost producer of cotton gins in the world. Pratt is widely considered “Alabama’s First Industrialist,” and as his enterprises prospered, so did Prattville. In 1866, Prattville became the county seat, and Pratt was unanimously elected the town’s first m yor. From these humble beginnings, Prattville is home to almost 35,000 people today.

Sights to See Prattville’s second nickname is “The Fountain City,” thanks to its many artesian wells. Some have been capped, but there are plenty still offering up gallons of s eet, clear, mineral-rich water, and a few allow citizens and visitors to fill containers and take the ater home. Find public artesian wells throughout the historic downtown area including one at the corner of 3rd and Chestnut Streets. It is history that’s fl wing free at the Prattaugan Museum/Heritage Center. This circa 1840 Greek Revival home contains numerous interesting artifacts from the Pratt Family. There’s also a public artesian well at this site. Efforts to p eserve heritage in the form of old homes and other structures resulted in the creation of Old Prattvillage. Another preserved architectural treasure is Buena Vista, a circa 1830 structure on the National Register of Historic Places. Legend has it that Andrew Jackson patterned the staircase at his home The Hermitage after visiting Buena Vista.

To fully explore the Prattville area’s natural beauty, Wilderness Park is a must-see. Giant oriental bamboo plants soar 60 feet to form a canopy in the sky. On the banks of the Alabama River, Cooter’s Pond Park features two boat ramps, docks, a riverwalk and pavilions. A popular, and usually productive, fishing hole by the same name abuts the park. Another place that begs a visit is Prattville’s huge Bass Pro Shop, an outdoor enthusiast’s dream-cometrue, with cascading waterfalls, fish aquariums, a restaurant, fudge shop and retail space galore.

Downtown Delights The Daniel Pratt Historic District in downtown has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. Pratt’s careful planning resulted in a pleasing and efficient yout of manufacturing, retail businesses, churches, schools and residences. The rest of downtown retains much of this same feel and has been reinvigorated in recent years, now boasting locally owned shops and boutiques, restaurants and more. The Creekwalk is nestled along the banks of Autauga Creek and winds through a portion of the historic downtown area. Heritage Park offers a g eat view of Pratt’s dream showcased in the Autauga Creek Dam and the Daniel Pratt Gin Company. 1

Looking Ahead “There is no shortage of pride when we talk about Prattville,” Vanderwal said. “Combine our rich history, our quality of life and our focus on the future, and it all adds up to success. We are a community that is moving forward, and the best is yet to come.”

The Grass Is Greener World-class golf is played on the rolling fairways and picture-perfect greens at Prattville’s Capitol Hill, the crown jewel of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. A state-of-the-art conference center and hotel, Prattville Marriott at Capitol Hill offers xcellent amenities for business groups and individuals.

MILLBROOK

COMFORT. CONVENIENCE. COMMUNITY.

As more and more people discover the allure of the good life in Millbrook, the community spirit of this close-knit city is flou ishing.

Kids’ Kingdom

Holding On To Heritage While Millbrook is one of the fastest growing cities in the state and facing its future with optimism and confidence, it emains proud of its past. With a rich heritage dating back to the 1700s, the Millbrook area, including Robinson Springs, Coosada, Deatsville and Elmore, was known for its sprawling plantations and prominent leaders, including Bolling Hall, William Wyatt Bibb, John Archer Elmore and Benjamin Fitzpatrick. The first pioneer home built in p esent day Millbrook was known as Ellerslie, constructed in 1818 by Bolling Hall, a well-known statesman and planter of that time. Hall’s home still stands and is included in the National Register of Historic Places.

NaturePlex at the Alabama Nature Center

Between World War I and World War II, the communities of Millbrook, Coosada, and Robinson Springs, later referred to as the Tri-Community, began to evolve and grow, adding schools, churches and rail transportation. Contributing to the population growth during this era were unfortunate outbreaks of diseases in the more populated city of Montgomery. Millbrook became a place to retreat during the long, hot summers. Seasonal homes and cabins in Millbrook, Coosada and Robinson Springs offe ed families fresh country air and seclusion. Soon, the seasonal population began to stay year round.

On the Grow Today, the area retains the best of its early features and natural resources, while aggressively pursuing economic development opportunities. It has experienced a more than 40 percent increase in its population in the last 20 years, and this influx of n w residents has spurred unprecedented residential building, which in turn has attracted new commercial development that keeps gaining momentum. Residents and visitors enjoy a wide variety of retail, restaurant and hospitality options, and Millbrook’s substantial number of undeveloped and highly trafficked comm cial sites point to additional expansion and an even brighter future. Millbrook also has convenient Interstate 65 access, is located only 10 miles north of Montgomery, Alabama’s state capital, and the Montgomery Regional Airport is approximately 20 miles from Millbrook. This ease of access is paving the way for continued prosperity.

Community Counts Millbrook residents enjoy the best of two worlds – small city comforts plus urban conveniences – creating a relaxing way of life underpinned by a genuine sense of community. The city promotes this close-knit feeling by offering plenty of opportunities for its esidents to get involved. Numerous civic and service organizations are credited with contributing to the orderly growth and development of the city. Annual events and festivals are made possible through partnerships between community organizations and the city. And more than 50 places of worship representing many religious denominations are also an important part of community life. To ensure that this spirit of connection is not lost to growth and to maintain the simplicity of a quiet, safe and healthy lifestyle, the city readily invests in parks and recreation facilities and venues. The city’s continuing support of local public schools and youth has made the fully accredited Elmore County Public School System a standout among Alabama’s public school systems. The Elmore County system serves a countywide student population of more than 11,000 at 15 schools with a mission to provide relevant, engaging,

positive learning environments where students are empowered to realize their self-worth through continuous academic, social and emotional growth. A well- established community theater contributes to the cultural health of the community and represents the citizens’ appreciation for the performing arts.

Out and About The great outdoors play a prominent role in Millbrook’s quality of life too, with six well-equipped and maintained public parks that provide recreational options for all ages. A variety of outdoor options are available for hunting, fishing and bo ting enthusiasts. Wildlife and waterways help define Millb ook. The Coosa and Alabama Rivers are located on the eastern side of the city. Scenic Lake Martin and Lake Jordan are just minutes away. The Mill Creek meanders through the center of the Village Green, Millbrook’s town center park, and natural ponds dot the landscape in neighborhoods and on small farms. The statewide headquarters and conservation educational facilities of the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) are a true gem and located in Millbrook at Lanark. This historic 300-plus-acre estate includes the Alabama Nature Center, the NaturePlex, miles of diverse nature trails and exceptional programs and events for schools and the public including nature photography classes, gardening workshops, kids’ fishing odeos and more. Millbrook’s many amenities include two outdoor-based gems with topnotch educational and recreational facilities. The Alabama Nature Center, a facility of the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF), is a planneduse, outdoor conservation education destination that offers fir -rate educational programs and activities for schools and the public utilizing the remarkable Lanark property as a living laboratory. The Grandview Family YMCA, located on beautiful expansive grounds, offers a wide ariety of sports, fitness, aqu tics and child care programs with walking trails, athletic fields and a lake

Montgomery and Maxwell Air Force Base have always been close partners, and the capital city is proud to have a military institution of such stature as part of its community.

Maxwell Air Force Base’s 2017 air show was recently recognized as being the Best-of-the-Best by the International Council of Air Shows

In 2015, the warm welcome and strong support that Montgomery has consistently provided to all who live and work at Maxwell earned the city a prestigious national award, the Altus Trophy. The recognition is presented annually to the city that has shown the most “outstanding support to an Air Education and Training Command base,” and Montgomery was chosen from many other cities for the distinction. The city has a long history of aviation excellence, starting back in 1910, when the famous “fathers of flight ” the Wright brothers, chose Montgomery as the spot for their first civilian flying school. T t same site would later become Maxwell Air Force Base. Through the years, city leaders and everyday citizens have reached out to Maxwell by holding events like Military Appreciation Week and Military Night at Biscuits baseball games. In addition, The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce includes a Military Support Council that regularly holds events like “Eggs and Issues,” breakfast meetings that allow military representatives and city and state leaders to gather and discuss important issues.

Play

Buzzing About MGM WE THINK MONTGOMERY IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY, BUT DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT. HERE ARE SOME TESTIMONIALS AND ENDORSEMENTS THAT ARE HELPING SPREAD THE WORD OF MGM.

Montgomery Making History Again 52 Places to Go in 2018 “The city is also undeniably relevant right now, with a deep commitment to confronting its past…” Jada Yuan, New York Times

In late April, the Equal Justice Initiative opened The National Memorial for Peace & Justice and The Legacy Museum and thousands of people were in town to honor MGM’s newest attractions.

Bernice King “To all my human family: You must visit the #LynchingMemorial and the #LegacyMuseum in Montgomery, Ala.”

In Montgomery, the Memory of the Civil Rights Movement Lives On in the Kitchen

Ava DuVernay “Visit this place in Montgomery, Alabama if you can. It will take your breath away and invite you to breathe anew.”

John Legend “Anyway, y’all need to come to Montgomery and see this memorial”

Easy Streets

Easy Streets Navigating through MGM is easy and since it meets where I-65 and I-85 interchange, it’s also easily accessible. Most of downtown is within a one-mile walk, so you don’t even need a car to visit most of MGM’s historical attractions or grab a bite from one of our unique restaurants.

Travel By Bike

Walk Downtown

Thanks to the Civil Heritage Trail and the Montgomery Bike Club, there are bike racks set up all through downtown, so it’s easy to pop in and out of attractions, restaurants and venues. No bike, no problem. You can rent a Regions bike from the Visitor Center and all the bike essentials are included in the rental. visitingmontgomery.com 334-262-0013

Since most of the downtown attractions are within a one mile radius, it’s easy to grab a map and hit the street. Plus, there are plenty of cool restaurants, art murals, historic markers and unique shopping venues to keep you busy along the way.
