I’ve lived it, but now my health dictates my non-travel status rules my life Each family deservesvacations, butthey also need to properly prepare for retirement as well. And over living the lavish spending aspect of pleasure can be at the detriment to living when income reduces somewhat in retirement Which I venturemaybethecasewith the white haired receptionist. Ifshelivedcomfortably in retirement, I would have her pegged as volunteering her time just to keep busy instead of working as a receptionist in a doctors office And there are so many other reasons that could have affected her status, besides tons of trips; medical bills bad investments, lack of planning for retirement, etc , all have consequences as to how we live our lives in our waning days.

could, and that requires a logical amount of reduced spending, unless you are worth hundreds of millions. Which I’m not, but still I would encourage those to carry plenty of hundreds to make someone s day for anyonetheyencounter with of course not expecting anything in return. That’s key, and it equals fulfillment. And essentially it’s real.

It’s not attraction or anything,it’s just the ability of one person who has suffered to recognize another, and in a way feel their pain. I’d really like to help heal, but unless placed in the right conditions, it is impossible, but I know how to get them the help they need. Most who post on social media only want to exposetheirglamour, witha few exceptions and the comments, or feedback, is mostlypositiveandhelpful.

Rene Porras, is an interesting fellow, andservedinthesame unit as Yaw, the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, inVietnam. Both were drafted into the Army from 1970-1971, and were 19 when on a godforsaken hilltop inVietnam they first met. Harvey thankfully had the foresight to bring along a Texas Flag, like I did in Iraq. That’s how Harvey and Rene met, when Porras, aninfantry-radioman,noticed the flag and they got to talking It turned out that Porras family had moved from Gonzales, Texas to out west, likeIdaho, thenthefam cametoHoustoninthe1960s and eventually opened their store, Porras Prontito, built out of an old auto body shop. It’snowataqueriathatserves the local neighborhood and beyond. Rene welcomed all ofuswithloveandfriendship, anditwasamazingtoseehow the two men’s friendship has lastedoverthedecades.

Porras brought out menus, with his shop being best known for its carne guisada tacos, a tender beef stewwhichisservedwithrice, salad, avocado and flour tortillas; but Harvey mentioned a Ms. Nancy burrito, a beef, bean, andcheesepocket of deliciousness that hit the spot. The restaurant has a huge selection of burritos, as well as breakfast and lunch plates, burritos, sandwiches, baked goods like cookies and empanadas, breads, tamales, andmore.

Following lunch we got to talking. Issues such as the attempted gentrification of Denver Harbor were a big concern in the community Thenwelearnedofthelackof supportforDHareaVeterans. Porras and his group have been knocking on Veterans doors in his area, and he has noticed that Veterans groups in the city or Harris County don’t really take on the mission of assisting Vets in need. Therealizationthatwe in Montgomery County are Veteran revering, with many Veteran groups but in Houston, the thought is far from apparent. Curtis Cole, the leader of the Wisecrack Warriors, had the idea to see about helping some of the

Veterans in Denver Harbor with minor home repairs, as well as the sending of Christmas and birthday cards that the group offers for Veterans. It’s a new mission thattheWCWs willacceptto bring more awareness to the organization that humor and service to Veterans are lookingtoservicewithhumor andifneedsbewithahammer aswell.

I think it is a good idea for Veterans organizations to at least put a little focus in areas such as Denver Harbor, in areas not seen by those in groupsthatshouldsee. Yes,it might be a little out of your comfort zone, but I believe a littleeffortwillgoalongway, and be very fulfilling in the end. And for any efforts put forth, you have my word, I will be there with my fingers tappingthekeys.

The daytrip proved an enlighteningexperience. Not only did my friendship with myVeteranbrethrenincrease, learning more about my big brother Harvey and where he came from, but also between thehistoryofYawandPorras. It's another Veterans story I will cherish, and it was a privilege to have witnessed. Oh,Renenevergaveusabill, but we figured it came out to about $73 dollars and we collectively gave a $200 dollar tip, making sure his staff was well taken care of that day. All done with pleasureofcourse.
