Gas Prices (April 26, 2021) - Texas gas prices have fallen 0.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.60/g today, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Gas prices in Texas are 2.7 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand $1.07/g higher than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas is priced at $2.27/g today while the most expensive is $3.15/g, a difference of 88.0 cents per gallon. The lowest price in the state today is $2.27/g while the highest is $3.15/g, a difference of 88.0 cents per gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 0.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.87/g today. The national average is up 2.0 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.13/g higher than a year ago.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices: Midland Odessa- $2.82/g, down 2.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.84/g.

San Antonio- $2.38/g, down 0.8 cents per gallon from last week's $2.39/g.

Austin- $2.47/g, down 2.9 cents per gallon from last week's $2.50/g.

"Last week saw limited upward movement in gas prices, tying the previous high water mark we last saw in March, signaling that perhaps we may see additional upside as most states in the nation have finished the transition to E PA - m a n d a t e d s u m m e r gasoline," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum a n a l y s i s f o r G a s B u d d y.

"While gasoline demand did dip last week for the third straight week according to GasBuddy data, it was yet another small decline, and as temperatures continue to warm ahead of summer, it wouldn't surprise me that demand will rebound in the weeks ahead and we could continue to see gas prices push higher. For now, however, it doesn't appear that any rise in price would be significant, so motorists shouldn't be too concerned at this point, but may see see average prices inch higher."

By Nancy Jowers Kristen Lynn Degner was born April 28, 1981 and at 18 months old, shortly after her 2nd DPT vaccination shot, she b e g a n h a v i n g complications, as did many other children who received it. The injection lot was tainted and Kristen began having multiple seizures and a routine of heavy doses of different medicines to try to control them. For the rest of her life she has been mentally disabled.

initial prognosis was not quite correct! Kristen just had her 40th birthday!

Unfortunately, her challenges continue even now as she is fighting her 3rd round of cancer. After having 8” of her colon removed, doctors found the cancer had spread to her liver and the right lobe of her liver was removed.

Recently another 3cm spot has been found on the liver but is being contained and has not spread.

As her 40th birthday approached, parents Steve and Pam Degner wanted to

have a big celebration for the occasion and decided on a support parade in their River Plantation neighborhood. The parade got larger and larger as so many people who have shown their love and support for Kristen and her parents through the years, wanted to be a part of this great celebration! The parade included emergency vehicles, a motorcycle officer, 3 cars from Gene DeForest Pct2 Constable,

the Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas for a specialized nerve treatment program designed for seizure control. Doctors told her parents that with all that was happening to her, Kristen was probably not going to live past 12-13.

The treatments were discontinued as she became an 18 year old adult.

With Kristen’s fighting spirit and the love and support of her dedicated parents, family, friends, and church members, she has proven the doctors’

traveled to join 10 other Chapters for the “Annual TX Division District 111 Meeting and Workshop”, this year in Livingston, Texas.

*Rebel Joan Of Arc Chapter was proud to have the largest number of members in attendance of all the chapters, and RJOA supported the Silent

Auction with multiple treasurers donated by the Chapter. It was a delightful day to share with all our

Why Eat Asparagus?

High in vitamins B6 and C, plus fiber, folate, and glutathione, an anticarcinogen and antioxidant, asparagus is an excellent nutritional choice. It comes in three colors: white, green or purple, although the green variety is the most common. Long considered a luxury vegetable, often with a luxury price tag, fresh American-grown asparagus appears in stores in late February. But asparagus is at its best—and is usually cheapest—in April and May. And sure, while there’s frozen and canned asparagus, which can be enjoyed year-round, nothing beats the delicate flavor of fresh asparagus.

Choosing and Storing Asparagus Asparagus spears can be thick or thin. Some people prefer one kind over another but size is not necessarily an indicator of quality. Thicker spears may have tougher, woodier ends, but these are broken off before cooking anyway. The key is to select straight, firm, uniformly sized spears with closed tips. If you do need to keep it for a day or two, the best way is to place the spears upright in a bowl (or even a small v a s e ) o f c o l d w a t e r.

Alternatively, you can wrap the ends of the spears in a damp paper towel and refrigerate them.

W h a t t o D o Wi t h Asparagus To prepare asparagus, you will need to rinse the spears and break off the tough ends. After that, how you cook asparagus is up to you.

Purists enjoy their asparagus with nothing more than a drizzle of good-quality olive oil, but you can enjoy asparagus in many different dishes: in soups, salads, stir-fries, risottos, scrambled eggs, pasta, and many more dishes besides. You can find some great low-fat recipe ideas below.

So How Do You Cook Asparagus?

In short, quickly! Here are the basic ways to cook this yummy veg. Note the blanching idea below is really key if you want those green crisp asparagus you may see in the deli case of some high-end markets. * Steaming: First, you need to tie a bundle of asparagus spears together numerous, decorated cars, trucks, ATVs, and golf carts. Add about a 1/4 cup of water: cover and microwave for 4-5 minutes. * Roasting: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lay asparagus on a baking sheet. Drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil.

Roast for 8-10 minutes. * Stir Frying: Cut spears diagonally into 1

1/2 inch to 2-inch pieces and stir fry with a teaspoon of sesame or olive oil for 3 minutes. * Roasting: Place asparagus on a baking sheet coated with nonstick cooking spray and roast in a preheated 450-degree oven for about 10-15 minutes, depending on thickness of the spears.

O r, i n s t e a d o f u s i n g cooking spray, drizzle a little olive oil over the asparagus before roasting. * Grilling: Place asparagus spears on a preheated (medium-high heat) grill sprayed with olive oil spray and cook for about 5-8 minutes until tender, turning occasionally.

What Pairs Well With Asparagus - Asparagus and dairy produce. Asparagus is excellent served with any type of dairy product, such as cheese (particularly Gra na Padano or Parmigiano), butter and any sauces containing dairy produce or cream.

- Asparagus and eggs. A great classic? Green asparagus, eggs and truffle. These ingredients are so ideally suited because they both have a grassy note, while truffles have hints of onion that are also to be found in asparagus and, to a lesser extent, in eggs. The real secret is that asparagus, eggs and truffle all share sulphurous notes.

Like so many other parents who put their disabled children first and foremost, Steve and Pam deserve recognition for the many selfless years of sacrifice, caring for a special needs child. The rewards come from all the little things these children do to show their love!

For the salad: Add the asparagus and fennel to the vinaigrette and toss to coat well. Brush the grill with some canola oil. Place the vegetables on the grill and cook until just caramelized and charred on all sides, about 4 minutes. Set aside to cool briefly.

2. Heat a small sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and the pine nuts; toast until just golden brown, about 2 minutes. Set aside to cool in the pan then add to salad bowl.

3. Slice the asparagus on the bias into 1-inch pieces. Core the fennel halves, then slice them 1/8inch-thick. Add the asparagus and fennel to the salad bowl. Add the currants, olives, arugula, salt and pepper. Toss well.

Let sit for 5 minutes to allow the salad to absorb the vinaigrette. Adjust the amount of vinaigrette and garnish with the shaved Pecorino.

Biden’s Tax-and-Spend ‘Infrastructure’ Plan Would Slow Economy, Deepen Swamp Walden Happenings

In this weeks review article written by David Ditch with the Heritage F o u n d a t i o n titled;“Biden’sTax-andSpend Infrastructure’ Plan Would Slow Economy, Deepen Swamp,” .was published on March 31, 2021 in the Sunday Family Houmour Review.

David Ditch is a research associate specializing in budget and transportation policy in the Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget at The Heritage Foundation. The following text in this article are all of the unabridged words of author David Ditch throughout the article.

begins his article by saying that, “The Biden administration on Wednesday released details of the first part of its latest enormous spending plan.

Although President Joe Biden is promoting the plan as a way to create jobs through infrastructure projects, its combination of tax hikes and central planning would leave the nation poorer and more dysfunctional.

In contrast, the new Biden plan uses tax hikes for businesses and investors to facilitate a big expansion of federal power.

Given that the economic recovery during the pandemic is still fragile, the last thing we need is tax increases that discourage private sector investments and make us less competitive in global markets.

The 2017 tax cuts provided enormous benefits[D1] to Americans across the income scale.

Rather than continue the pro-growth success of tax reform, the Biden plan would gut it.

Instead, the plan recycles bad ideas from the Obama administration and scales them up. For instance, the plan uses 15 years of tax revenue to pay for just eight years of

spending, similar to budget gimmicks that were part of Obamacare.

More importantly, the plan envisions that only a bigger federal government can solve the nation’s problems and create jobs.

Yet former President Barack Obama’s 2009 “stimulus” package was a failure at creating jobs because federal infrastructure spending is slow and wasteful and serves to pull skilled workers away from private construction jobs.

Another recycled gimmick that the plan relies on is hiding opportunistic spending provisions behind a popular word.

Just a few weeks ago, Congress passed a $1.9 trillion package that lawmakers labeled “COVID-19 relief,” despite the fact that health spending accounted for less than 10%.

Now we see the word “infrastructure” deployed as a shield because most of us associate the concept with roads and bridges that we drive on every day. In reality, though, only about 5% of the Biden plan ($135 billion of the $2.25 trillion total) would go toward roads and bridges.

Instead, the plan would spend more on subsidies for electric vehicles (which benefits

wealthier households), corporate welfare, and other things entirely unrelated to infrastructure such as health benefits and job training programs with a long history of failure.

On transportation, Biden’s plan follows the far-left Green New Deal by putting more of the spending increase into transportation modes such as mass transit and Amtrak than highways and bridges.

This is despite the fact that transit and Amtrak already are heavily subsidized and account for a tiny share of overall travel.

Not only would this plan damage the economy and waste unimaginable amounts of taxpayer money, but it also would cause permanent damage to our democracy.

By enacting federal programs to micromanage state, local, and private sector responsibilities such as drinking water, internet, housing, school buildings, and the power grid, Washington would have too much control over too many things.

To do so at a time when the federal government is already too large for Congress to oversee, and growing faster than we can possibly afford, is a recipe for dysfunction and unaccountable gover-

Many goals of the Biden plan would be better accomplished by getting government out of the way rather than handing more power and money to Congress and federal bureaucrats.

For example, we could have better roads and bridges using existing spending by getting rid of federal red tape that makes construction projects take longer and cost more.

Deregulation and further tax reforms can aid businesses and add permanent jobs throughout the country. Local reforms

to boost residential development would improve housing affordability far more than hundreds of billions in federal spending.

Despite the big promises surrounding this latest multitrillion-dollar spending package, Americans should recognize that the plan would do tremendous harm to the economy and our foundational system of divided government.

Congress should avoid blindly supporting the extreme agenda that the president’s plan represents.

Young Texas Artist Competition and Concert Will Be Back In March 2022!

Now Running a Matching-Fundraising Campaign for seasonal Support.

By “Doc” Fennessy Hey folks the young Texas artist official Texas state music competition and concert is coming back in March of 2022. This will also include the traditional Bach, Beethoven, and Texas Bar-B-Q prior to the show in a huge circus tent in the street adjacent to the theater.

The competition will start on a Wednesday in the Historic Crighton Theatre in Conroe, Texas.

The final night of competition will be presented to the public on the following Saturday evening preceded by the famous BockBeethoven Bar-B-Que. Presently, the young Texas artist are running a Matching -Fund Raising Campaign in order to raise a projected $250,000 to be donated in order to support the coming concert season competition.

2. Senate passes Senate Joint Resolution 45 and Senate Bill 1025 The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the lack of checks and balances the legislature has when it's not in session. This bill and the accompanying Senate Joint Resolution would propose a constitutional amendment regarding the powers of the governor, the legislature, and the Texas Supreme Court following prolonged disasters or emergency declarations.

Specifically, the legislation would require the governor to call a special legislative session if he or she wants to continue a disaster declaration past thirty days and the declaration either

affects half the state's population, affects twofifths (102 or more) of the counties, or affects twothirds of the counties in three or more trauma service regions. This measure would allow the legislature to provide advice and consent on continuing disaster waivers and actions. The American system of government was created on the foundation that checks and balances on each branch of government are necessary. This bill and the accompanying proposed constitutional amendment seek to live up to that ideal.

If passed by the legislature, the constitutional amendment will be on the ballot this fall.

That’s how many unaccompanied children crossed our southern border last month.

For context, it’s enough people to fill every seat in the AT&T Center. We know the journey to our border isn’t safe or easy for children. Many arrive malnourished and in critical health, having endured weeks or even months on the road.

Physical and sexual abuse are common. Some young girls arrive pregnant.

These children account for only a fraction of the more than 172,000 migrants Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, encountered along the border in March — the highest number on record.

The system is so over-

whelmed that children who by law cannot remain in CBP custody for more than 72 hours have been held more than 10 days. The federal government has set up influx care facilities across the state, including Freeman Expo Hall, to help care for children. At one point, the processing facility in Donna was at 1,600 percent capacity.

All of this is happening with the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made routine tasks such as transporting and caring for migrants incredibly dangerous. Law enforcement, local officials and nonprofits lack the facilities, personnel and resources to manage this crisis in a fair, efficient and humane way. That needs to change.

This past week, we introduced the Bipartisan Border Solutions Act to address the migrant influx at the border. This is the only immigration bill supported by members in both parties and both chambers of Congress. We have also been proud to work with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., a fellow border state native.

First and foremost, our legislation will provide new protections for unaccompanied children.

It’s painful this must be put into law, but there should never be a circumstance in which a child is released to the custody of a sex offender, child abuser or other dangerous criminal.

The health and well-being of these children is a top

priority — while in the care of the government and upon release to sponsors.

Second, the Bipartisan Border Solutions Act will help streamline the processing of migrants. At one point last month, processing centers were so overwhelmed that the Biden administration considered flying migrants to facilities along the northern border — a huge waste of time and resources. Our legislation will establish at least four regional processing centers in high-traffic areas along the border to properly handle the influx of migrants. These will help improve coordination between the various government agencies involved and make the process more efficient.

They will also ensure we don’t have to skip important steps of the process — such as issuing a notice to appear in immigration court — due to a facility running beyond its capacity.

Third, this legislation will create a pilot program to expedite legal proceedings. Our immigration court backlog is already 1.3 million cases deep, and the average time for a case to be adjudicated is about 2½ years. With the current surge in migration, those numbers will only grow.

It’s in everyone’s best interest to resolve cases fairly and efficiently, and deliver migrants the legal certainty they need to move forward with their lives.

To support this goal, the

bill requires the hiring of hundreds of immigration judge teams, asylum officers, litigation teams and other staff. The cases of migrants who arrive during surges will be prioritized to ensure those with legitimate claims can be granted asylum without lengthy delays, while also disincentivizing would-be migrants with weak asylum claims from attempting the dangerous journey to the border.

This bill makes a number of other commonsense changes to alleviate staffing shortages, expand language translation and legal orientation services for migrants, and improve coordination between federal, state and local officials.

We are already facing a humanitarian crisis, and unless we take action, the situation will only get worse. The number of unaccompanied children who arrived on our border more than doubled from February to March. And we are on track to see the highest number of illegal border crossings in two decades.

There is no time for partisan fights and no excuse for inaction. This crisis has placed a dire strain on our resources, and Congress must take action before the entire system collapses.

We have been proud to work across the aisle on the Bipartisan Border Solutions Act. It’s time for our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join us.

Devotional The Heart Of Joy Begins Early And Has No End Spreading the Word

We a l l k n o w t h e opposite of joy is sadness.

So how do we want to be known? What or who do we want others to see in us? What brings us into living a joyful life? Or more important, what does God want to see in us? We have to choose one or the other. One is God. The other is forever a part of darkness and sadness.

Now, there are times of sadness for death of others, but those times aren’t supposed to linger for long. That may be the

time to increase our prayers for a recovery.

Singing and praying always helps us bring our body and mind into His perfect will for us. We learn to break through the barrier of darkness into God’s light. We realize we have an enemy who is the major “joy-stealer” and happiness-grabber.”

It’s a good thing to pray sadness and trials out of our life. As we pray through those negative thoughts and feelings, then we should experience God’s peace and presence of joy, which helps us to lift our inner spirit into the light.

Darkness cannot stand the peace of a spirit filled with hope, faith, and light.

The word “joy” has six helpers: blessed, joyful, happy, delighted, overjoyed and uplifted.

For those who like numbers, “joy” is used over 200 times in the Bible. Here is the first time “joy” is used in a Bible verse. Laban is speaking to Jacob about how he, Jacob, took Laban’s daughters away secretly. Laban asks: “Why did you flee secretly and deceive me, and did not tell me so that I might have sent you away with j o y a n d w i t h songs……?” Genesis 31: 27.

Now, here is the last time joy is used in the Bible. We look to the tiny book of Jude which is

right before Revelation, where it’s stated as a promise of God: “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy; to the only God Our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.

Amen.” Jude 1:24-25.

greater joy on the earth than that. Those encounters simply mean that our family will continue with another generation on earth when we go on to heaven! And we all pray for each of our family members to have that kind of joy that can also be passed down to the next and next and next generations.

The best way to “pass down joy” is to be joyously happy as we live our lives asking God to be first in our families. Sing to the babies about Jesus.

heroes from Abraham to Moses to David and Daniel. Then let them hear of how Jesus healed so many people in Israel.

And some day, they may need to hear what happened to Jonah because he neglected to obey the Lord! Yes, the stories are old, but they are appropriate for helping a child grow to know how to obey their parents and develop a kind heart toward others.

The statue is a representative of a CSA soldier and has the markings of Co. G, 4th Texas Volunteer Infantry Unit, commonly called the Grimes County Greys. There were five units formed in Grimes

County during the war years of 1861 thru 1865.

Children Safe Harbor Announces New Board Members

Montgomery County, TX - Children’s Safe Harbor, an accredited c h i l d r e n ’s a d v o c a c y center, has elected a new president for its board of directors and has added five new board members.

Leading the board is the new board president Mary Nan Huffman, JD, who serves as Legal Counsel for Houston Police Officers' Union.

She previously served in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office as Chief Felony Prosecutor in the Child Exploitation Division and was over the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC)

Division.

Community City Of Conroe Names New Street To Honor Former SHSU President As the 13th and first female president of Sam Houston State University, President Emeritus Dana G. Hoyt, left a legacy as a trailblazer.

Before her retirement in Aug. 2020, she was honored for the many ways she made a positive impact on the u n i v e r s i t y. O n e o f Hoyt’s biggest contributions during her 10 years as president was her strong commitment in the establishment of the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Conroe, Texas.

On Wednesday, in a joint effort between SHSU and the City of Conroe, the street leading to the college from Interstate 45 was officially designated as Dana G. Hoyt Avenue.

Beginning in 2013, Hoyt spearheaded S H S U ’s e f f o r t s t o launch the first College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Texas State University System by approaching City of Conroe officials with her plan. Seven years later, in what she would describe as one of her proudest accomplishments, SHSU accepted its first class of 75 medical students in the fall of 2020.

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this h o n o r, ” H o y t s a i d .

“Having this sign here by something that took of so much time, effort and passion of my life means so much to me.

This College of Osteopathic Medicine came out of what Sam Houston State has been known for and that is producing a strong workforce for Texas and this region. I am incredibly honored that the college will continue to grow next to this street.”

Established by the university to address the

physician shortage in the eastern region of Texas, the college’s mission is to help rural populations in need.

“Being able to accomplish the mission of having more primary care physicians in underserved areas is really what today is about and it is what this was all about from day one,” Hoyt said. “So many great people bought into that and helped along the way, and here we are headed toward our first graduating class in 2024.”

SHSU President Alisa White spoke to those gathered at the ceremony on how Hoyt’s accomplishments and commitment carried over to those around her.

“This college is an important SHSU initiative, but also a community initiative, and Dr. Hoyt’s passion and vision for it is obvious and powerful,” White said. "Transformation occurs when the potential visible to some becomes visible to all.

Dr. Hoyt cast a vision that the community could see, and that is why we are here today.”

The five-story building situated on 7 acres of land donated by the Johnson Development Corporation, was once just a blueprint and dream on Hoyt’s desk.

During his remarks, Virgil Yoakum, the Johnson Development representative who first met with Hoyt in 2014 as she proposed the partnership, revered Hoyt’s dedication and passion.

“It’s a great day for a daydream,” Yoakum said. “And this is a great day to celebrate Dana Hoyt and her vision for this university.”

Conroe Mayor Jody Czajkoski proclaimed April 21, 2021 as Dr. Dana G. Hoyt Day in Conroe and presented her a key to the city.

Proclamations from the offices of Governor Greg Abbott, state Sen. Brandon Creighton and state Rep. Will Metcalf were also read in Hoyt’s honor.
