CHAMBER INFORMATION

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce serves almost 650 businesses of varying sizes throughout Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Riner, Shawsville, Montgomery County and the surrounding area. We are an advocate for our member businesses and serve as a marketing cooperative to build and enhance business contacts for each member. We stock thousands of brochures, business cards and other pieces of information related to member businesses and organizations to help visitors and residents.

We are an active Chamber with programming to support and enhance networking opportunities and educate our member businesses. With a staff of four, this is a medium-sized Chamber with a budget under $1 million. Despite this, we offer educational programming like Eggs & Issues and Business@Lunch, an annual women’s conference, bocce ball and golf tournaments, business showcase, and an annual meeting with dinner and awards, weekly communications, a nationally-recognized community based leadership program, networking training, ribbon cuttings and much, much more!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR Alan Fabian, CEO of LewisGale Hospital – Montgomery

I wanted to take a minute of your time to introduce myself and share our 2019 Chamber Goals.

I am Alan Fabian, CEO of LewisGale Hospital – Montgomery. I have lived in our community for almost 7 years, and I really enjoy the community. As CEO of our local hospital, I lead a team of professionals who are committed to the care and improvement of human life. Whether they are physicians, nurses, maintenance or housekeeping team or intake staff, everything they do makes a difference in your wellbeing. Our hospital has grown significantly over the last 7-10 years, and our team has received numerous awards and recognition for our practices. I am proud of this work.

I have served on the Chamber’s Executive Committee and Board for the last six years, and during that time, our Chamber has improved services to our members. The work of our board has brought you an improved billing and payment system, easy program registration, new website, improved social media communications and more. We have advocated and raised awareness of your voice in our community. Our Chamber takes the pulse of its members annually through Ambassador surveys and through your participation in our online surveys. We want to hear from you.

I will lead the Chamber with this same sense of commitment. I have appreciated getting to know the business community leaders, business owners, managers and employees who attend Chamber functions. I want to get to know you better and improve our services. We want a vibrant and relevant Chamber of Commerce.

This year, we will complete the Chamber building which is the body of the Chamber. The real heartbeat of the Chamber can be found in our member’s engagement. I encourage you to attend one or several of our programs, participate in our Leadership NRV program, or join a committee; all of your actions can enhance the health of our local business community and economy. You will be hearing more about opportunities to grow our community and advocate for local businesses as the year progresses.

BLACKSBURG

Welcome to Christiansburg – the place to play. Recreation is a large part of Christiansburg’s identity, and you can see why when you visit our local parks and sports complexes and explore the Huckleberry Trail with the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. No matter the season, there are always exciting programs available through our Aquatic and Recreation centers that are diverse enough to satisfy all interests and needs. And with a growing festival scene and Farmers Market, we’re all about bringing people together. To state it simply, Christiansburg is the place to be!

CHRISTIANSBURG

Christiansburg is the fourth largest town in Virginia with a community steeped in history, and we’re surrounded

by Virginia Tech, Radford University, two major hospitals, and the I-81 corridor. That gives us a unique ability to serve diverse collegiate, commercial and professional industries, while still maintaining the vibe of a small town. And that’s a vibe we want to keep, even after being selected as the passenger rail site for the New River Valley, which is estimated to attract anywhere from 2,500 to 15,000 new visitors to the area each year. And those visitors will have plenty to do! As the New River Valley’s retail corridor, Christiansburg pairs brand-name shopping and dining with locally-owned eateries and boutiques.

Recreation is simply a way of life in Christiansburg, as residents and visitors participate in programs offered through the Christiansburg Aquatic and Recreation centers and enjoy the local parks sprinkled throughout the town. The ever-expanding Huckleberry Trail connects Christiansburg to neighboring Blacksburg and offers amazing views of the area’s natural beauty.

Every year, the Harkrader Sports Complex hosts youth baseball championships, while the Christiansburg Aquatic Center is the home pool of the Virginia Tech Hokies and welcomes numerous swimming and diving competitions.

OUR Montgomery County is home to some of the country’s leading institutions. Virginia Tech is ranked #26 in Forbes’ Top Public Schools in the country and offers a competitive education with over 150 majors to choose from. Or enroll in New River Community College, offering exceptional programs in occupational, technological, and business programs. NRCC offers both associate degrees and bachelor transfer programs. We are also home to the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, also called VCOM. VCOM is a private, non-profit medical school located in Blacksburg, where students are dedicated to improving community health. Blacksburg is also home to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, established in 1978. The vet college is home to over 700 veterinary students who treat over 80 thousand animals every year.

Montgomery County Public Schools serves almost 10,000 students in grades pre-K through 12 at 19 different schools. The mission of MCPS is that every student will graduate career and college ready and will become a productive, responsible citizen. MCPS inspires learning by providing a nurturing environment, positive relationships, high expectations, and continuous growth. MCPS is an award-wining and high achieving school district that focuses on engaging students in the classroom and building relationships with students to better provide appropriate instruction. Recent school division initiatives include: 





Doubling the amount of recess time for elementary students, Providing a chromebook to every student in grades 5-12, and Growing a work-based learning program for high school students that now has more than 500 students learning real-life job application skills at local employers

The 19 schools in MCPS represent 4 distinct communities – Auburn, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Eastern Montgomery Shawsville/Elliston). The schools in each area have their own personality, some are large while others are small, some are more rural while others are suburban. All schools are high achieving and accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. Additionally, each school has the resources of the entire system to support their educational program.

MCPS has an operating budget of $109 million, with 88% of that budget dedicated to personnel expenses. Employing more than 2,300 people, MCPS is an economic driver as one of the top five employers in the region. MCPS is a highperforming and award-winning school system and Montgomery County is fortunate to have such high caliber public schools available to our school age students. montgomerycc.org

Communities of Faith In a country where freedom of religion is guaranteed, it is imperative that county governments work well with all faith-based organizations with regard to their presence, building needs, security and other municipal concerns. The diverse population in Montgomery County embraces a wide range of faiths and houses of worship. From small home church groups, to formal and memberships of more than 1,000, all faiths are well represented. Montgomery County respects all people and seeks to protect everyone who resides and worships within its boundaries.

Located in the heart of Blacksburg, The Moss Arts Center is an extravaganza of state-of-the-art facilities for dance, music, art, innovation and education. Montgomery County is also home to dozens of world-renowned artists.

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce believes in a strong partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools. We believe that our public school system is strong and is working to prepare students for their futures. We know and understand that good teachers are essential to building a desire to learn and achieve in our youth.

Through the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Foundation, we have raised funds to support our Teacher of the Year program. Katherine Lynde was selected by Montgomery County Public Schools as the 2019 Teacher of the Year. Katherine is an English teacher at Blacksburg High School. Dinah Arnott was selected by the Alliance for Better Childcare Strategies as the 2018 Early Childhood Educator of the Year.

Dinah is a preschool teacher at the Virginia Tech Child Development Center for Learning and Research. A 2019 recipient will be selected later in the year.

With the support of New River Office Supply, we were able to provide gift certificates to each of the recognized MCPS Teachers of the Year.
