he Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce serves businesses of varying sizes throughout Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Riner, Shawsville, Montgomery County and the surrounding area. We are an advocate for our member businesses and serve as a marketing cooperative to build and enhance business contacts for each member. We stock thousands of brochures, business cards and other pieces of information related to member businesses and organizations to help visitors and residents. We are an active Chamber with programming to support and enhance networking opportunities and educate our member businesses. With a staff of four, this is a medium-sized Chamber with a budget under $500 thousand. Despite this, we offer educational programming like Eggs & Issues, an annual Women’s Leadership Conference, Bocce Ball and Golf Tournaments, Annual Meeting with dinner and awards, weekly communications, a nationallyrecognized community based leadership program, networking, ribbon cuttings and much, much more! We work to connect and engage with our members so that they may prosper in our community.

want to thank EVERYONE for the opportunity to serve as the President and CEO of your Chamber. Since my first day back on December 1, it has been a fast paced and exciting time learning everything the Chamber does for its members and the community. I have truly enjoyed meeting everyone and seeing firsthand how valuable a membership with the Chamber can be. I especially want to thank my Executive Board, Board of Directors, Ambassadors, and my staff. I appreciate your hard work and countless volunteer hours in promoting our business community and making our community one of the best places to live and work. Our success in fulfilling the Chamber’s mission and completion of our strategic goals is due to the collaborative effort by all. Economic growth and a vibrant business community is the primary goal of the Chamber. Which is very similar to the mission at Virginia ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) where I was the Special Agent in Charge of the for the southwest portion of the state. Some have asked how the transition has been after spending the past twenty-seven years in law enforcement and now working for the Chamber. The answer is simple, “it’s been great!” Sure, I miss the job and the people I worked with, but the Chamber is a way to give back to the community and build on relationships that I already had with stakeholders in the area. As we come out of a pandemic, we will all need to continue to

As we move forward, my focus is to build on the foundation my predecessor Sharron Scott established, which is for the Chamber to be a resource and advocate to promote business growth and strong leaders within our community. For example, the three CASE (referral) groups are filling up fast with members sharing information and building contacts, and we have also initiated monthly meetings to help small businesses (members and nonmembers) with financial assistance and connecting them with the Small Business Development Center. There has been good turnout with our meetings for the Minority Business Accelerator and I only expect more interest as word gets out. We also continue to see excellent turnout at our ribbon cuttings. I truly believe this is the result of members supporting one another and wanting to see them succeed. Also, the Leader-
ship New River Valley continues to be a success, mainly due to the hard work and dedication of the committee members. Those that have attended this program, and currently in attendance, all speak highly of this program. These are just a few of the examples of current programs the Chamber offers, but there are many more posted of the on the website at www.montgomerycc.org. We are fortunate to have such a large and diverse membership of more than 600 members that provide experience and expertise. We invite any business that is prepared to invest in themselves, and the community by becoming involved in the Chamber.

am Mark Woolwine, partner with Brown Edwards and your 2022 Board Chair for the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Since taking on this role, I have had the opportunity to work with remarkable local business leaders as your Chamber continues to serve your needs. As we continue through 2022, we continue to advance our theme of ‘resilience’. This word highlights our ability to quickly recover from difficulties or toughness. We know there are still challenges ahead, however, our region is filled with brave leaders assisting those in need, making major decisions about policy, delivering critical care, and shifting their business models in new and exciting ways. You can find leaders all around us - in business, in government, in schools, in neighborhoods, in our families. Our capacity for resiliency takes large-scale cooperation from these stakeholders working together, applying everything we have learned to meet the needs and prepare for the future. We will have a lot of
work to do, but through this extraordinary collaboration, I am confident that this community, and your Chamber, will continue to be resilient.

Our Legislative Committee focuses on keeping you informed of policy or potential legislative changes relevant to businesses. This year we are providing a new way to track key bills that can impact your business (be on the lookout for an announcement on social media later this week). This committee works with the membership and develops the legislative agenda presented to legislators at the Federal, State, and local government levels. Our Infrastructure Committee will identify new and upcoming projects that impact the businesses and the infrastructure necessary for our growing community.
Additionally, our Leadership New River Valley program continues to assist in the development of community leaders. Members enrolled in this nationally recognized program have the opportunity to enhance their leadership and communication skills as they are set to lead our community to a better tomorrow. This year, we are pleased to announce the return of our business showcase. This program offers businesses a chance to shine while build relationships with other local businesses and residents. We also have paired this program with our Buy Local campaign as we continue to support local business and to keep buying locally top of mind for our community.

n a country where freedom of religion is guaranteed, it is imperative that county governments works well with all faithbased organizations in regard to their presence, building needs, security, and other municipal concerns.
The diverse population in Montgomery County embraces a wide range of faiths and houses of worship. From small home church groups to formal congregations, with memberships of more than 1,000, all faiths are well represented. Montgomery County respects all people and seeks to protect everyone who resides and worships within its boundaries. We have Roman Catholic congregations in Blacksburg and Christiansburg (the one in Christiansburg also offers Mass in Spanish).
If you are looking for a Protestant congregation, you will find churches throughout the county; whether you want a small quaint rural congregation, a traditional stained-glass church, a traditional African American congregation, or a mega church with contemporary worship, you will find what meets your needs. We have a Jewish community that offers both conservative and reform services and Virginia Tech has a beautiful Hillel Center. We are also home to the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, also called VCOM. VCOM is a private, non-profit medical school located in Blacksburg, where students are dedicated to improving community health. Blacksburg is also home to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, established in 1978. The vet college is home to over 700 veterinary students who treat over 80 thousand animals every year. Montgomery County Public Schools serves over 10,000 students in grades pre-K through 12 at 19 different schools. ast year, LewisGale Hospital Montgomery celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Whether it’s an individual, company, country, or organization, reaching the semicentennial milestone is no small accomplishment, particularly considering how few entities actually survive to celebrate such a landmark achievement. For 50 years, LewisGale Hospital Montgomery has delivered comprehensive healthcare to residents of the New River Valley. Our community roots grow deep. In 1910, Dr. A.M. Showalter founded the 12-bed Altamont Hospital in nearby Cambria. In 1971, a new hospital was built at our present location on Route 460 at the southern edge of Blacksburg, Virginia. Today, led by Alan Fabian, Chief Executive Officer,
LewisGale Hospital Montgomery is a 146-bed facility, offering an expansive range of medical, surgical, and emergency care services.

eadership New River Valley enhances participants’ leadership skills and encourages the application of what is learned each month in their work. This program goes one step further and provides the class with the opportunity to give back to the community through a Leadership Legacy project. In 2021, Sleep in Heavenly Peace - New River Valley has now built 450 beds.
Leadership NRV has worked to support non-profits such as Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program (aka MCEAP), Habitat for Humanity, Vittles for Vets, and many more. This work creates opportunities for building relationships and building a better community for all residents.
The Legacy Project works with a local non-profit to build capacity for their respective vision and mission. The class members learn about themselves, apply principles of change management, and expedite applying learned principles in a controlled environment provided by the local non-profit. The Chamber uses the Phillips Model of ROI to calculate the benefit to the non-profit and the community.

ontgomery County is well equipped to meet the needs of every IT enterprise. A wide range of computer and IT services including hardware, software, integration, solution providers, custom services and other vendors exists right in the county.
As a leading research and technology university, Virginia Tech is involved in many IT cutting edge programs, and the Corporate Research Center is home to several IT companies across a breadth of technology services and solutions. These innovations are prevalent not only in our tech-based businesses, but our medical institutions as they make use of new and exciting technology to better serve our community.

A unique service to the area is the use of delivery drones with Wing. Delivery drone service to people’s doorsteps started small, but has exponentially grown since launching in October of 2019. According to Wing, it saw a 500-percent increase worldwide between February and April due to COVID-19. Customers said the service helped them get toilet paper when there was a shortage and others said they haven’t visited the grocery store since March. Wing increased household product needs for deliver and partnered with Montgomery County Public Schools to get library books to kids.

he Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce staff cannot possibly implement all of the programming and events created. We have a team of volunteer professionals, known as the Chamber Ambassadors, who assist the Chamber with reaching the members, marketing assistance and building networks. This team also manages our member ribbon cuttings throughout the year. It is often said: This team is the DNA and lifeblood of the Chamber. ealthcare touches every citizen in our community. Our community expects strong healthcare providers. This relationship is reciprocal as well; strong healthcare providers need a vibrant community. Residents expect access to good primary care and specialists. Did you know that the state determines what specialists and equipment healthcare providers can have in a community?
Although the state-imposed challenges create a vacuum at times, we have two excellent hospitals and physician networks in our community. LewisGale Hospital Montgomery, located in Blacksburg, was recognized as the 2020 Business of the Year for their leadership during the pandemic and what they do to support our community. There are over 175 providers in our community associated with LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. The economic impact on our community is estimated at over $68 million. Carillion Medical Center of the New River Valley is a regional non-profit hospital located in the southern portion of Montgomery County. This hospital has a total employment of 2,780 from throughout the New River Valley and beyond and an economic impact of $333 million. Did you know we have a medical college in our community that trains physicians who wish to serve in rural and underserved communities? Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg is one of four campuses located in southern states that is training physicians. Citizens are demanding different healthcare, and healthcare providers are changing the traditional delivery model. We have physicians who have chosen not to take insurance but to work with families on the best payment method that meets their needs. We even have providers that focus on prevention and wellness as part of their practice, MDVIP Wellness, led by Dr. Greg Beato. This new approach to medicine also enables members to see a physician on the same day instead of delays due to scheduling and build a healthcare plan to support health and wellness. We have health coaches who are certified and trained using the Duke Integrative Medicine model, such as Robert Ferrari. Wellness also matters in our community. We have excellent dentists, massage therapists, sports medicine specialists, yoga trainers, run clubs, physical therapists, hypnotherapists, behavioral therapists, and more who stand ready to serve you. LAW ENFORCEMENT Our community is unique! The events around the country and our community have created a strong bond among our law enforcement agencies, stronger than most in the Commonwealth and different. The common goal is serving the community. As a result of this leadership culture, our crime rates are low, and crimes are less malicious in nature. The leadership creates this culture at The Town of Blacksburg Police Department, The Town of Christiansburg Police Department, The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia Tech Police Department. The leaders in these departments have high expectations and model positive leadership. They develop the core values, emphasize mission and vision daily. They hire based upon these very qualities. To enhance community awareness and build stronger relationships, most of these agencies provide citizens academies. These academies openly share the work provided by the respective agencies, their bright spots, and challenges. Education and training are provided at the local, regional, state, and national levels. Generally, we celebrate the success of our business community at the Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner. This is the Chamber’s largest program with over 400 attendees representing businesses of all sizes. Enjoy a nice meal with members of your team or dine with other community leaders as you learn more about what makes our community great.

Join Chamber members and the local business community for our largest monthly networking program. We provide refreshments, music, and an opportunity to networking with an amazing recognition at the program and will have the opportunity to speak.

BOCCE BALL TOURNAMENT
For fun in the sun and a great time outdoors, join us for the annual Bocce Ball Tournament. This activity gets our members moving and provides a prime opportunity for enhancing business relationships. With many attendees and participants, it is a unique opportunity to build your business. We provide the equipment, refreshments, and music. Our Business After Hours following the Tournament is a great end to a fun day.
BUY LOCAL BUSINESS SHOWCASE
Your Chamber has created a local marketing campaign to support local business and to keeping buying local on the top of mind for our community. We built a media blitz through television, radio, and social media. This initiative features throughout the year, spotlighting local businesses and featuring some of our members as heroes and advocates for strengthening our local economy.
EGGS & ISSUES
This breakfast program provides members an opportunity for our community to come together for networking and a presentation on a topic of local interest. Topics include anything pertinent to our community, from updates to our housing situation in Montgomery County, Virginia Tech’s Master plan, and legislative briefings. Attendance for this event is high and typically includes a varied crowd of dignitaries, executives and senior management.

GOLF TOURNAMENT Chamber Members and golfers gather for this tournament and a day of fun and relaxation. Firms and groups of individuals form teams that compete for the Title. Non-golfers enjoy great conversation and networking. Lunch and the awards ceremony, held at the evening’s Business After Hours, add just the right touch to an idyllic workday on the greens.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
To celebrate the success of the many women in our community, as well as encourage and support continued growth and development, the Chamber created a local conference which has been taking place since 2014. We serve Montgomery County and many business professional women from the Roanoke and New River Valleys. This day-long program features speakers and workshops and an awards program providing recognition to extraordinary women who make exceptional contributions to our community.

Leadership in Changing Time: A Conference for All is designed for current and emerging leaders of companies of all sizes working and learning from each other on how to improve company culture by incorporating more open and transparent communications, engaging more employees, and working together to better the community.
