The Jubilee Celebration of the Monte Vista Historical Association offers the opportunity to raise funds to preserve the integrity of this historic district. The proceeds will allow the all-volunteer organization to continue to educate the public about the benefits and values of this unique time capsule of early 20th century homes. Our historic district is critical to the city of San Antonio. It is a testament to how its exceptional preservation blends into and is an asset to the urban core.

MISSION STATEMENT

“To encourage the preservation of the distinctive heritage of the Monte Vista area; to keep the physical identity of this late nineteenth-early twentieth century district intact; and to educate the public, especially the youth, with knowledge of our inherited neighborhood values which contribute to a wholesome urban environment.”

Dear Monte Vista Resident, I write this letter at the mid point of September 2023. It seems as if this year has flown by and there have been so many significant milestones that we have reached and quite a few that we are still striving to accomplish. I want to restate the Mission Statement of our organization that was founded 50 years go and one that still resonates and serves us well as our guide post:

“To encourage the preservation of the distinctive heritage of the Monte Vista area; to keep the physical identity of this late nineteenth-early twentieth century district intact; and to educate the public, especially the youth, with knowledge of our inherited neighborhood values with contribute to a wholesome urban environment.”

I chose to insert this mission statement to remind us of our purpose as stewards of this unique and wonderful neighborhood.

Our neighborhood has lately been inundated with requests to change zoning to meet specific needs of current residents or future residents who wish to use properties in a different manner than they have historically been used. Our strong coalition of neighborhood members have risen to the challenge of discouraging changes that are not in keeping with the historic purpose of our neighborhood. I am so grateful for the efforts of our membership in standing strong to preserve what our elders have worked so hard to pass down through these years.

2023 President’s Letter

Last, but certainly not least; we have a wonderful program scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5, 2:00 - 4:00 pm at Laurel Heights Methodist Church. This program was developed to present the history of 50 years of perseverance and preservation in Monte Vista. A panel of past presidents and neighbors will discuss how the Association fought demolition of homes and encroachment into the residential area. This will be an educational opportunity that you will not want to miss!

I hope that as many of you can will join the events of the next several months. We will have our third Thursday events for the remainder of the months in the year as well as our annual Christmas event in December. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve and lead this organization as President to date and I look forward to all of the great opportunities to come.

Sincerely,

Monte Vista Historic Association, 2023

MVHA Scholarship

The Donald E. Everett Scholarship in Historic Preservation was started in 2000 by Monte Vista in honor of MVHA Founder Donald E. Everett. The scholarship was put on hold in 2020 due to Covid. This year we are excited to bring it back and the recepient is Dennis Fichman. He is an Architecture Major at UTSA from Toronto. Below is a thank you letter he wrote to MVHA.

Hometown: Toronto, Canada Major: Architecture

Thank you for supporting student scholarships. You are creating bold futures.

Monte Vista Historical Association, As a recipient of the Donald E. Everett Scholarship, I would like to express my deepest and geuine thanks to you for the support that is being provided through this scholarship.

I am a graduate student studying architecture and am finishing my last year. Receiving this motivates me to continue to work hard and finish strong. While I continue to work, this does significantly assuage my financial situation. Thank you again for this scholarship. I will not take it for granted and am grateful. Through my own way, I will also pay it forward to someone else and help them through any means necessary.

Sincerely, Dennis Fichman

MVHA hosts talk and reception at Trinity

We had a great turnout for the event MVHA hosted on June 10 at Trinity. A catered reception was held in Dicke Hall with music provided by Jacob Hudson, a Trinity Alum and classical guitarist. After the reception, Dr. Kathryn O’Rourke presented a wonderful lecture on Architect O’Neil Ford. Thank you to Trudy Kinnison for planning the event, Trinity for opening up their space, Dr. O’Rourke taking the time to talk to us and the family members of O’Neil Ford that attended. Annual Fourth of July Parade & Picnic

4th

The Annual Fourth of July parade and picnic was a great success with several hundred in attendance.

Serving as Parade Grand Marshals were MVHA founding members Virginia and Gus Van Steenberg, Molly Denman Branton and Fourth of July parade originator (circa 1968) Janice Payer. Dignitaries rode in two classic Mercedes and a Studebaker Lark provided by Lisa and Wade Caldwelll and an Oldsmobile 442 convertible provided by Tom Seerden.

Amanda Holmes, Becky and Charles Kirbo, costume parade judges had a difficult time choosing winners from the many participants. Congratulations to the following costume winners: Grand Fido - Livi Hatter, Best Decorated Bike - Noah Wilkinson, Best Non Motorized Float - Andres Casillas, Best Child Costume - Rasika, Best Adult Costume - Deborah Callahan, Best Overall July 4th Theme - Finley McGinnis & Cale Hatter.

The Pie Baking Contest is always a highlight of our picnic. Trudy Kinnison’s team of judges, Alexander King, Linda Daniels, Tom Karam, and Mike Bacon had a difficult task of choosing winners from all of the delicious entries. Congratulations to the Pie Baking Winners: First Place - Katie Kinder DeBauche Key Lime with Graham Cracker Crust, Second Place - Lydia McAfee Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie and Third Place - Jackie & Theo Fagan Pedernales Peach Pie.

All contest winners received congratulatory certificates along with gift certificates to local businesses. Special thanks to Cappy and LaFonda for donating multiple prizes.

The crowd quickly consumed almost 300 hot dogs, ice cream and watermelon and drank gallons of lemonade. A big thanks to H-E-B for providing! Our event wouldn’t be possible without the numerous energetic, dedicated volunteers: Lynn Boyd, Steve and Jill Markey, Melody and Andy Hull, Vince Johnson, Jill Torbert, Gayle Seerden, Art Campsey, Diane and Wendell Fuqua, Ryan Reed, Lydia and Darren McAfee, Jane and Rick Lewis, Ann Van Pelt and John McCusker, Michelle Giddens and family, Diane Abdo and, Rick Noll, Gloria Kemper, Robin Teague, Mickey Amacker, Katherine Martin, Helen Perry, Fred Schraub and Brett Rogers, and Janet Molak. No event would be complete with photography by David Smith.

Maintaining Property in Monte Vista

Since city historic designation in 1973, Monte Vista properties undergoing external repairs or changes have been subject to the review of the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and its Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC). Prior to being issued city permits, property owners must receive a Certificate of Appropriateness for the work being considered, including painting, repairing rotted wood, landscaping, additions, and the construction of fences, among other types of projects.

If work is routine maintenance or repair with the same materials, an administrative Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) may be given by the Office of Historic Preservation. For more extensive projects, review by the Historic and Design Review Commission may be necessary to receive a Certificate of Appropriateness.

MVHA Architectural Review Committee

In order to answer questions and help with homeowners’ preparations to meet with the City’s Office of Historic Preservation and gain a Certificate of Appropriateness, the MVHA Architectural Review Committee meets on the first Monday of the month at 6pm at the Landa Library Annex, 233 Bushnell Ave. We can discuss the city’s design guidelines and make suggestions about your project before you meet with city staff. Requests for placement of items on the agenda should be directed to the chairman of the committee at the email address, mail@montevista-sa.org.

Where to get information

Visit the City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation website at www. sanantonio.gov/ historic and read the section Before Getting Started, also called the Application Process Brochure.

The Monte Vista Historic District is one of several historic districts in San Antonio, all under the purview of the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP). Staff recommendations are based on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards of Rehabilitation, the City of San Antonio’s Unified Development Code (UDC), and the City of San Antonio’s Historic Design Guidelines. The HDRC meets twice a month on the first and third Wednesdays. To submit an application or discuss a project, you may contact Office of Historic Preservation staff at the City’s Development and Business Services Center, 1901 S. Alamo. Phone is 210-207-0035 and hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45am to 4:30pm.
