2018-19 ANNUAL REPORT
DEAR PATRONS, Thank you for being a part of the 2018-2019 Season of Sound Waves. This season began a two-year celebration in honor of our Maestro Max Bragado-Darman with works and guest artists that are exciting for our audiences and meaningful to the Maestro. He has brought back audience favorites like Elmar Oliveira and next season’s Kun Woo Paik and Judith Ingolfsson, along with newcomers like composer Alex Berko and pianist Marcos Madrigal. We are all looking forward to our upcoming season Ovation, which will not only be a season of great music, but also a season of recognition and festivities for a man that has dedicated the past fifteen years to making the Monterey Symphony one of the finest regional orchestras in California. Plans for our search for a new Music Director are underway with a committee formed of orchestra musicians and present and former Board Members, along with our Executive Director, Nicola Reilly. The committee received over 150 applications from qualified candidates throughout the world and is working on interviews to narrow the applicants to four, who will be asked to perform with our Symphony during the 2020-2021 season. During this past season, the Symphony was also bolstered financially by two important gifts to its Endowment Fund. The first was a $900,000 legacy gift from former Board member Margaret Radunich, which will allow her generous yearly gifts to continue into perpetuity. The second was a gift of over $2.3 million by former Board Member and Symphony Benefactor Bertie Elliott. Bertie’s gift is transformational for the Symphony as it immediately provides beneficial funding from its earnings to supplement the Symphony’s fundraising efforts and helps to balance our budget. The outlook continues to be strong for the Symphony’s future and with the support of our extremely generous community members, foundations, and corporations, we will be able to continue to provide great live classical music for our audiences, and provide exposure for young members of our community to attend Youth Concerts at the Sunset Center and at Sherwood Hall in Salinas.

DEAR FRIENDS, 75 gallons of water – give or take. That’s the number we were given by New York Philharmonic Principal Percussionist Chris Lamb for the amount of water needed PER DAY to perform Tan Dun’s Water Concerto. With the up-lighting you could see dust specks in the water, so it was imperative that the vessels were emptied and cleaned between each performance. That’s 525 gallons of water for all the rehearsals, the concerts, and the youth concerts on Monday morning. It took five different hoses and a hydraulic pumping system, devised by our genius Technical Director Rick Larsen, to empty and fill the bowls seamlessly. And on that Monday morning, I brought my two sons (7 and 11), to see the concert. The hall went dark, Chris entered from the back with the water phone, the lights came up through the water and my 11-year old said, “Mom, this is the coolest thing you’ve ever done.” We opened Sound Waves with another commission in partnership with the Big Sur Land Trust, featuring 23-year old composer Alex Berko. His whole family came for the weekend and became a part of the Monterey Symphony family. Before the concerts, Berko and fellow Big Sur composer John Christopher Wineglass, discussed their different compositional practices to an attentive crowd at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. On Friday, May 3rd the Monterey Bay Aquarium opened its doors to host the Symphony’s Gala by the Bay. Strolling through the exhibits, members of the Symphony serenaded patrons as they dined on sustainably sourced seafood! A grand time was had by all, and over $120,000 was raised for the Monterey Symphony. On Monday, May 20th, 3,000 students filled Sherwood Hall to hear Cuban pianist Marcos Madrigal perform. Madrigal enchanted our audiences with his technical acumen and charming demeanor. We received new funding from individuals and foundations and began the season with the incredible infusion to our endowment fund from local philanthropist Bertie Elliott. I want to personally thank each and every individual who supports and attends the Symphony, as well as the dynamic and brilliant staff, our wonderful Music Director Max Bragado-Darman, and our enthusiastic board. The momentum is palpable and you are all a part of it. Musically yours,
Nicola Reilly, Executive Director 3
DEAR FRIENDS, Within the unifying theme of the Sea, the 2018/2019 season had quite an amount of variety as well as many challenges. In contrast to the Concert Grand season, every visiting artist performed on a different instrument and even included a composer, Alex Berko, whose work Among Waves set the stage for the season very successfully. Carol Wincenc astounded us with her virtuosity on the flute and showed us the stratospheric limits of its possibilities. The percussionist Christopher Lamb was mesmerizing and brought the Tan Dun Water Concerto, a modern and innovative work, to life. Always magnificent, and a highlight for me this season, was Elmar Oliveira, a consummate violinist and musician, who performed for us the stunning Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1. Our final soloist was a new discovery: Marcos Madrigal, an up and coming pianist, enchanted us with his winning personality and heartfelt, very solid and expressive Chopin Concerto No. 2. His two virtuosic and entertaining encores brought the audience to its feet again. Schubert’s Ninth Symphony is challenging because of its length and its repetitions, but I think the orchestra musicians’ artistic commitment greatly helped to keep the audience engaged. No doubt that Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony was a hit, and I believe they were memorable performances. The whole February concert was another highlight because of its variety within the one theme of the Sea. Ports of Call by Ibert surprised and captivated us, and the orchestra’s rendition of Debussy’s La Mer was outstanding. Everyone enjoyed Jung-Ho Pak’s visit to the orchestra as guest conductor and the orchestra responded splendidly for the Schostakovich Symphony No. 9. The whales made a mysterious and fascinating appearance as well. Beethoven’s Fifth brought the season to a resounding conclusion, and that brings me to the four sets of youth concerts. The last set contained this most famous of all symphonies, and the enthusiastic reaction of the attending children heartened all of us. These concerts are vital for the education of all children and must continue for the enrichment they give and the effect they have on their future enjoyment of classical music.
With appreciation,
Max Bragado-Darman
