DEAR FRIENDS, After the tempestuous Debussy in February and the exotic sounds of whales in March, we begin our April concert with Mendelssohn’s tranquil and nostalgic Calm Seas and Prosperous Voyage, which displays a more classical approach to descriptive music. All three works on this program are from the Romantic era, Max Bruch being the latest of the three. Elmar Oliveira, consummate violinist and musician, returns to the Monterey Symphony to perform Bruch’s luxurious violin concerto. Working with him is always the greatest of pleasures, and the concerto is one of my favorites.

With Schumann’s Symphony No. 4, we close the cycle of performing all four symphonies during my tenure with the orchestra. It is a work that I have lived with and puzzled over for a very long time. The thickness of the orchestration is always a challenge for both musicians and conductors. For me, the second movement is particularly haunting, conjuring up the image of a troubadour serenading a maiden who peers from a high tower window.

Opening our May concert, Wagner’s Flying Dutchman depicts one of the scariest moments of Wagner’s life. Returning from Riga to London by ship, a huge storm engulfed them in the strait of Skagerrak, and Wagner was convinced that he would not survive. Luckily he did, and the result was this amazing opera, the overture of which, in hair-raising fashion, will end our sea voyages for the season. We then welcome Marcos Madrigal, a young Cuban whose brilliance has not gone unnoticed, to join us in performing Chopin’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 2. No one can resist the spell of Chopin.

I was particularly excited about programming Beethoven’s 5th Symphony to end this season, not only because most music “aficionados” would travel many miles to hear it in a live performance, but also because more than 2,800 local students will be able to hear it for the first time in a concert hall on the morning of May 20th. We will be moving the orchestra to Salinas for this exciting event, and I thank all of our patrons for making the dream of awakening thousands of children to the joys of great classical music a reality.

MAX BRAGADO-DARMAN BIOGRAPHY Max Bragado-Darman has served as the Music Director and Conductor of the Monterey Symphony since July 2004. Mr. Bragado-Darman was Music Director and Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Castile and León in Valladolid, Spain for nine years. From its formation in 1991, he built it into one of the most prestigious orchestras in Spain. Under his direction, the orchestra performed for enthusiastic audiences in all the major cities of Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and Germany. He recorded with this ensemble many unknown works of the Spanish repertoire as well as most of the orchestral works of Turina and Rodrigo and the cello concerti of Alberto Ginastera on the Naxos Label. He also recorded the flute and clarinet concerti by Joan Tower on the Opus One label.

In May 1995, Max Bragado-Darman was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. Under his direction, the orchestra grew in popularity due to his rapport with audiences, the community in general, and his innovative programming. He has worked with distinguished artists such as Alicia de Larrocha, Teresa Berganza, Horacio Gutièrrez, Elmar Oliveira, Dubravka Tomsic, Andre Watts, Angel Romero, Gary Graffman, and Aaron Rosand among many others.

As a guest conductor, Max Bragado-Darman has performed in the United States with the symphony orchestras of Honolulu, San Diego, Nashville, Delaware, West Virginia, Cedar Rapids, Savannah, Oklahoma City, Fort Worth, Austin, Fresno, and Boulder. He has led the National Orchestra, the Radio Television Orchestra and most other orchestras of Spain, as well as orchestras in Portugal, England, Argentina, Germany, and Mexico. In the fall of 2003, he made his debut at the distinguished Wexford Opera Festival with the Granados opera “Maria del Carmen,” in a version he researched and edited himself.

His conducting career has been guided by the knowledge he received from teachers and musicians such as Robert Fountain, Robert Baustian, George Szell, Igor Markevich and Franco Ferrara. Most recently, Max Bragado-Darman has appeared on the podiums of orchestras in Monterrey, Mexico and Mexico City. In the spring of 2009, in the heart of Andalucia, he took on the challenge of presenting a fusion of flamenco and classical music featuring a pianist, guitarist, dancer, and full symphony orchestra. He has been the conductor for the prestigious “Iturbi Piano Competition” in Valencia, Spain in several editions.

Max and Mary Bragado have two children: Julio who was formerly a dancer with The American Ballet Theatre and is now studying acting in New York City, and Ilia who teaches dance in Valladolid, Spain and is married to José Manuel Concejo. They have two grandsons, 9 year old Max and 7 year old Alejandro. Both grandchildren are enchanted with their “Abuelito” and “Granny.”

ELMAR OLIVEIRA

violin Elmar Oliveira remains the first and only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow’s distinguished Tchaikovsky International Competition. Most recently, he founded the Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition (EOIVC), to support the career development of young violinists, ages 16-32.

Oliveira has performed at many internationally-acclaimed ensembles, including the Boston and Chicago Symphonies; the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras; the London and New York Philharmonics; as well as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, among many others.

Additionally, he has performed extensive recital tours of North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East.

Oliveira received Grammy nominations for his recordings of both the Barber Concerto and the Bloch and Benjamin Lees Violin Concertos. He has premiered works by contemporary composers including Morton Gould, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Joan Tower, who dedicated her Violin Concerto to him.

Oliveira is a devoted teacher and promoter of young artists, and also keenly supports the art of contemporary violin and bow making. He is a Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Florida.

Felix Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg into a wealthy Jewish banking family. Both Felix and his sister Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel were musical prodigies and accomplished composers at a young age, although the siblings used their musical talents in different ways throughout their equally short lives. Felix Mendelssohn is often credited with being the person to revive Bach in the classical music canon, and was heavily influenced by Bach’s use of counterpoint. Ludwig van Beethoven was another important influence for Mendelssohn, and it was Beethoven who inspired Mendelssohn to compose Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage.

Beethoven first set Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s two poems, Meeresstille and Glückliche Fahrt in a cantata for chorus and orchestra which was premiered in 1815, and Mendelssohn took inspiration to compose an orchestral concert overture with the same name in 1828. The nineteen-year-old composer knew that the audience at the premier in Berlin would likely have been familiar with the poems, and thus think of the words to the poems while listening to the piece. The first poem, Meeresstille (“Calm Sea”), is about the terrible stillness of the ocean in the mind of a would-be sailor who cannot set out to sea, and Glückliche Fahrt (which could be translated as “Pleasant Journey”), is about the opposite: a bright, windy day, perfect for a sailor who wishes to find his way back to land.

The term “overture” in this case is used not in the operatic sense, as the opening piece of an opera, but rather as a bipartite work that includes both slow and fast sections.

It opens with listless strings, with the addition of clarinet and bassoons, to evoke the deep stillness (“Tiefe Stille”) of the water. The flute, a wisp of wind, awakens the breeze, and the entire orchestra follows suit by blowing out the cobwebs of the stillness. The rest of the overture is a blustery ode to sailing on the open sea with a jaunty pirate shanty-like melody, the bubbling of waves on the ocean played by arpeggiated strings and woodwinds, and finally, a rambunctious timpani solo, followed by trumpet and horn fanfare, before the proverbial sailor spies land ahead and sails his ship safely into port. • MAX BRUCH (1838-1920)

Although it is certainly his most famous and popular of this particular genre of work, German composer Max Bruch’s First Violin Concerto, written in 1866, is only the first of nine concertos he wrote for the instrument, and not the piece that Bruch wished to have associated with his name beyond any of his other works. Bruch was frustrated to be known mostly for this concerto, rather than many of his other compositions, even though the piece is well-loved for good reason. Out of the four most famous German violin concertos at the time (Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bruch, and Brahms), the soloist Joseph Joachim said that Bruch’s concerto was “the richest and most seductive” of the four. Not small praise in such elite company for a composer who would unfortunately spend most of his career in Brahms’s compositional shadow.

Along with his friendship with Joseph Joachim, Bruch was also friends with several famous violinists at the time, including David, Sarasate and Willy Hess, and they advised him in his compositions. The violin concerto was written during Bruch’s tenure as a composer for the court at Koblenz, a position he held from 1865-1867, although he started sketches for the work as early as 1864. He conferred with several violinists on the piece, and revised it several times, including after the first performance of an earlier version by the concertmaster of the Gürzenich Orchestra, Otto von Königslöw in 1866, before it was officially premiered by Joachim in 1868. The concerto quickly became a hit, as violinists started to incorporate the piece into their repertoire. Unfortunately, Bruch never received commensurate financial remuneration Bruch was an outspoken critic of Wagner, Liszt, and the New German School, and preferred to write in an early romantic style reminiscent of his predecessors Mendelssohn and Schumann. Like Mendelssohn, Bruch was a Jewish composer, and one of his other famous works is Kol Nidrei, for cello and orchestra. The second movement of the violin concerto in G minor, op. 26 is a good example of Bruch’s ability to craft a beautiful melody, for as he said, “melody is the soul of music.” • ROBERT SCHUMANN (1810-1856)

wife, pianist and composer Clara Wieck Schumann. Originally calling it the “Clara Symphony,” Robert Schumann told his wife, “I will portray you with flutes, oboes, and harps.” The piece, then known as his second symphony, received lukewarm praise at its premiere in 1841, and Schumann refused to publish the score. Ten years later, in 1851, Schumann revised the entire symphony in one week in December, making the symphony into a heavier, statelier version, which he wanted to call a “Symphonic Fantasy,” asserts Schumann scholar Peter Ostwald. It was the 1851 version that Schumann eventually published in 1853, with the opus number 120, and which his widow Clara thought of as the superior version of the work.

However, the Schumanns’ good friend and fellow composer Johannes Brahms disagreed, and despite Clara Schumann’s strong protestations, decided to publish the original 1841 version in 1891. Brahms wrote about this version, “It is a real pleasure to see anything so bright and spontaneous expressed with corresponding ease and grace. The compositional decision to write a symphony that flows from one movement to another was not only aesthetic; Schumann incorporates the first theme of the first movement throughout the work to tie the movements together even more. He inverts the opening theme, played in the strings and bassoons, in the scherzo, and this inverted theme returns in the finale. Schumann refers to the main theme in several subtle ways throughout the work, which contributes to the cohesiveness of the symphony. The gravitas and sincerity of the later version of the Fourth symphony (which is the version that most orchestras perform today) reflects the changes that Schumann experienced during his lifetime as a composer, and the audience is left with a powerful symphonic work that exemplifies the creative possibilities one composer can derive from a theme and creating endless variations out of it. • READ ALICIA’S BIOGRAPHY ON PAGE 35

RICHARD WAGNER (1813-1883)

The final concert of the Sound Waves season opens with the overture from German composer Richard Wagner’s operatic tale of pirates, love, and redemption, Der Fliegender Holländer (“The Flying Dutchman”). Wagner recounts in his autobiography, Mein Leben, that he drew the inspiration for the story from his own difficult boat trip from Riga, where he was court conductor, to London, in 1939, but the story itself is a retelling of Heinrich Heine’s Der Fliegende Holländer.

By the time Wagner and his first wife, the erstwhile actress, Minna Planer, found themselves in London, they were deeply in debt. Wagner’s once friend, the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer, offered an introduction to the leading administrators at the Paris Opéra, and Wagner attempted to premiere The Flying Dutchman there. Unfortunately, the director of the Opéra wanted only the story, so Wagner was forced to look elsewhere for his premiere. After years of falling deeper into debt, Wagner’s luck changed in 1842, when he was offered the position of assistant music director at the court of the king of Saxony. There he conducted the premiere of his opera in 1843. Wagner revised the opera, namely the orchestration, in 1846 and 1852, and in 1860 again revised the overture and the ending of the work to reflect his desire to end the work with a theme of redemption.

The Flying Dutchman, along with two of his other early operas, Tannhäuser (1845) and Lohengrin (1848) are emblematic of early romantic operas, following in the footsteps of composers Weber and Meyerbeer who were influential in Wagner’s life. The composer later asserted that The Flying Dutchman was his first mature work as a poet. They also are waypoints in Wagner’s evolution as the composer of his massive Ring des Nieblungen, the opera cycle for which he is best-known. Never shy about his prowess as both a composer of music and words (although his skill with the latter is somewhat less admired than the former), Wagner was preoccupied with the idea of what he called Gesamtkunstwerk, or “total artwork.” The Flying Dutchman is a prime early example of Wagner’s forays into writing both the music and libretto (the lyrics) of an opera.

PROGRAM NOTES

FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN (1810-1849) Frédéric Chopin began work on his piano concerto, Op. 21 at the tender age of nineteen, while he was still a student. He premiered the work as its soloist in March of 1830, in his home of Warsaw. Just a year later, Chopin would move to Paris, never to return to his beloved Poland. Although this concerto is labeled as the second of his piano concertos, he wrote this piece first but published the other concerto (in E minor, Op. 11) before Op. 21.

Chopin, like many composers before and after him, was somewhat of a child prodigy, having begun composing music when he started playing the piano at age seven. Chopin’s compositional style stems from his limitless improvisational capabilities. George Sand, famous for being a cross-dressing writer, and Chopin’s lover, wrote of Chopin, “invention came to his piano, sudden, complete, sublime.” Most of his published works were improvisations that he set to paper, sometimes freely, often painstakingly, or as Karl Flitsch, one of Chopin’s students, noted, “The other day I heard Chopin improvise at George Sand’s house. It is marvelous to hear Chopin compose in this way: his inspiration is so immediate and complete that he plays without hesitation as if he could not be otherwise. But when it comes to writing it down and recapturing the original thought in all its details, he spends days of nervous strain and almost terrible despair.”

Chopin was notoriously averse to the limelight, unlike his contemporary, the virtuoso pianist/composer Franz Liszt, who absolutely adored it, and shaped what could only be described in today’s terms as an “influencer’s” ability to craft an image and persona. Chopin, on the other hand, played only a couple of public concerts a year, amounting to around 30-40 public concerts during his short lifetime. Nonetheless, his reputation only grew, and Chopin was widely sought after as a performer during his lifetime.

However, unlike most composers within the Western Art Music canon, who would not be considered “serious” composers unless they wrote largescale symphonic works in addition to serious chamber music, Chopin never composed any symphonies, and is known primarily as a composer of small-scale piano works. He did not publish any music that did not contain his instrument. •

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Ludwig van Beethoven’s Great Symphony in C Minor. The work that contains one of the most famous themes in the classical music canon, a main theme that most people on the street could sing if asked. It is helpful to look at the evolution of the reception of this now-beloved symphony to understand how and why it has become the iconic symphony it is today.

Ludwig van Beethoven began sketching out the symphony in 1803-1804, while he was working on the Third symphony (“Eroica”). However, it was not premiered until a marathon concert in 1808, in which both the Fifth and the Sixth symphonies and the Fourth piano concerto were premiered.

The opening theme of the symphony is the moment of the symphony that is most famous, and equally divisive. Early Beethoven biographer (and an associate of the composer) Anton Schindler waxed poetic about the opening four notes, which represent when “fate knocks at the door!” On the other hand, Ludwig Spohr, a German composer who lived around the same time as Beethoven, wrote in his journal, “the very first theme, in particular, lacks the dignity essential to the opening of a symphony.” He also asserted, “The last movement, with its empty noise, is the least satisfactory, although the return of the scherzo is such a happy idea that one can only envy the composer who could have thought of such a thing. It is quite irresistible. What a pity that the effect is so soon dissipated by the resumption of the noise.”

Beethoven biographer Maynard Solomon writes that twentieth century critics asserted the Fifth symphony to be “the ultimate expression of Classic rationality refusing to yield to the violent tremors of impending romanticism.” He continues, asserting that it is the “quintessential Beethoven Symphony,” one which contains numerous elements of both classicism and romanticism, rhythmic fervor and tender melodic phrasing.

Still, the opening is worth returning to. There is an eighth rest, but Music theorist Edward T. Cone warns us that this should not be misinterpreted as a silent upbeat. Instead, the four notes of the piece, the iconic “knock of fate” at the door, as Schindler exclaimed, is something different. Instead of a harmonic motive, or a lyrical theme that presents itself in the beginning of a standard classical symphonic work, Beethoven utilizes the rhythmic qualities of this theme throughout the entire symphony. And yet, if there is anything that unites analyses of this symphony, it is that nothing is agreed upon. Critic Donald Tovey writes that to analyze the piece in terms of its rhythmic cells is absurd, and that the piece “is really remarkable for the length of its sentences rather than for the brevity of its initial figure.” •

ALICIA MASTROMONACO Alicia has played with the Monterey Symphony since 2007. She is also a member of the Carmel Bach Festival and Marin Symphony. A San Francisco native, she began her music studies at age seven on the piano, and took up the horn after switching from the trumpet in her middle school band program. She earned Bachelors of Music degrees in Horn Performance and Musicology from Boston University, and did graduate work at the Universität der Künste Berlin before returning to California to continue her studies. She earned a Masters of Music degree at UCLA in Horn Performance, a Masters of Arts degree in Musicology at UCSB, and is currently working on her PhD at UCSB. Alicia’s dissertation is focused on the daily lives of orchestral musicians and the organizations in which they play, and she is using her dissertation to explore the relationships between regional orchestras and their communities. Alicia is an avid outdoorsperson and animal lover.
