DEAR FRIENDS, We have arrived at the heart of this season of the sea. The February program is made up of four representative titles chosen because of their importance in the history of music. Each is emblematic and challenging and can hardly be missed when choosing repertoire with this popular theme. Perhaps the least known and least performed of the four is Sibelius’ Oceanides, but for me it is probably the best rendition of a seascape. Admittedly it is a strange piece because of its nebulous style and uneasy rhythmic feel, but perfect for describing a dark and tempestuous ocean.

Ibert’s Ports of Call is a clear contrast, containing short descriptions of different Mediterranean ports with their luminosity, color, folklore and the people living in each. Britten’s opera, Peter Grimes, contains four interludes which reflect both the psychological drama of this seaman, blamed for a crime and seeking a place to live without fear, and the physical drama of the sea. However, the most emblematic of this repertoire is Debussy’s La Mer. He has managed to create an extremely structured score that, at the same time, gives the sense of rapturous freedom that the subject matter requires. No one can resist the energy and descriptive power of this classic. This entire program puts any orchestra to the test. I think we are ready.

Prepare yourselves for multiple treats in March when we welcome Jung-Ho Pak, a marvelous conductor, well-known by many of you, and Christopher Lamb, a superb percussionist. They will mesmerize with one of the most inventive and entertaining concertos in the contemporary repertoire, composed by Tan Dun. The concert continues with an equally inventive work

by Hovhaness which features the intriguing sounds that whales transmit. With both works, you will wonder if Sunset Center is floating in the middle of Monterey Bay! Then, bringing us back to solid ground, Maestro Pak will certainly excite and enthrall with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9. Our musicians are looking forward to this challenge. MAX BRAGADO-DARMAN BIOGRAPHY Max Bragado-Darman has served as the Music Director and Conductor of the Monterey Symphony since July 2004. Mr. Bragado-Darman was Music Director and Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Castile and León in Valladolid, Spain for nine years. From its formation in 1991, he built it into one of the most prestigious orchestras in Spain. Under his direction, the orchestra performed for enthusiastic audiences in all the major cities of Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and Germany. He recorded with this ensemble many unknown works of the Spanish repertoire as well as most of the orchestral works of Turina and Rodrigo and the cello concerti of Alberto Ginastera on the Naxos Label. He also recorded the flute and clarinet concerti by Joan Tower on the Opus One label.

In May 1995, Max Bragado-Darman was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. Under his direction, the orchestra grew in popularity due to his rapport with audiences, the community in general, and his innovative programming. He has worked with distinguished artists such as Alicia de Larrocha, Teresa Berganza, Horacio Gutièrrez, Elmar Oliveira, Dubravka Tomsic, Andre Watts, Angel Romero, Gary Graffman, and Aaron Rosand among many others.

As a guest conductor, Max Bragado-Darman has performed in the United States with the symphony orchestras of Honolulu, San Diego, Nashville, Delaware, West Virginia, Cedar Rapids, Savannah, Oklahoma City, Fort Worth, Austin, Fresno, and Boulder. He has led the National Orchestra, the Radio Television Orchestra and most other orchestras of Spain, as well as orchestras in Portugal, England, Argentina, Germany, and Mexico. In the fall of 2003, he made his debut at the distinguished Wexford Opera Festival with the Granados opera “Maria del Carmen,” in a version he researched and edited himself.

His conducting career has been guided by the knowledge he received from teachers and musicians such as Robert Fountain, Robert Baustian, George Szell, Igor Markevich and Franco Ferrara. Most recently, Max Bragado-Darman has appeared on the podiums of orchestras in Monterrey, Mexico and Mexico City. In the spring of 2009, in the heart of Andalucia, he took on the challenge of presenting a fusion of flamenco and classical music featuring a pianist, guitarist, dancer, and full symphony orchestra. He has been the conductor for the prestigious “Iturbi Piano Competition” in Valencia, Spain in several editions.

Max and Mary Bragado have two children: Julio who was formerly a dancer with The American Ballet Theatre and is now studying acting in New York City, and Ilia who teaches dance in Valladolid, Spain and is married to José Manuel Concejo. They have two grandsons, 9 year old Max and 7 year old Alejandro. Both grandchildren are enchanted with their “Abuelito” and “Granny.”

DEAR FRIENDS, The Symphony’s Sound Waves season rolls along with our February and March concerts. In my mind, these concerts are the cornerstones of this season. Reading about the compositional processes of these composers highlights the turmoil of writing music. Melodies and fragments were abandoned, entire sections were cast aside, and often the work was put on a shelf and returned to, years later. Many of these works share histories, and the overlapping dates of the composers reveals a new age of music making–more experimental, bolder, completely innovative.

We are so grateful to our Maestro, Max Bragado-Darman for his delightful programming in February and an opportunity to hear our orchestra shine. In March, we are thrilled to welcome guest conductor Jung-Ho Pak to the stage. Maestro Pak divides his time between Monterey County and Cape Cod, where he is the Music Director of the Cape Symphony. Also, in March, New York Philharmonic principal percussionist Christopher Lamb joins us as soloist in Tan Dun’s Water Concerto.

Mr. Lamb actually performed the world premiere of this piece in New York!

The Monterey Symphony finished the MC GIVES campaign in the Top Ten recipient organizations, raising nearly $102,000 by December 31st. BY ALICIA MASTROMONACO JEAN SIBELIUS (1865-1957) The Oceanides (Aallottaret in Finnish), is a tone poem by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was commissioned by Yale composition professor Horatio Parker (acting on behalf of New England patrons Carl and Ellen Stoeckel), and premiered at the Norfolk Music Festival in 1914. At first, Sibelius was asked to write a piece for the festival, but his role expanded to not only compose the piece that would eventually become The Oceanides, but to also conduct an entire concert of his music. At the end of his stay, he would receive an honorary doctorate from Yale. Sibelius had already submitted a version of his piece (which is one of the three versions in existence), but upon learning about these new responsibilities, decided to revise and expand The Oceanides into the work it is today.

The piece involves two subjects, or musical characters. The title characters, Oceanids, are mythological Greek Nymphs who inhabit the Mediterranean Ocean. They are the 3,000 daughters of Titus Oceanus and Tethys. The other character is, as one might expect, the sea itself. The ocean makes its first appearance with the entrance of two flutes in the beginning of the piece, and the Oceanids first arrive

Although these two characters do not intersect musically throughout the piece, they play off each other, their juxtaposition creating a narrative-like structure to the tone poem. The piece swells and crashes, and returns to peaceful waters, mimicking the movement of the sea in musical form. • BENJAMIN BRITTEN (1913-1976) English Composer Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes are excerpted from his famous opera, Peter Grimes. The title character, a fisherman, lives in a small village where he is widely reviled, ostracized, and ultimately driven to commit suicide by sailing his boat out to sea.

This is not to say that Grimes is a blameless protagonist; on the contrary, two of his apprentices die in dubious accidents at sea, and Grimes does little to ingratiate himself to his fellow villagers. Benjamin Britten, a closeted gay man who was not legally allowed to show his relationship with his partner, the English tenor Peter Pears, often chose themes for his operas that could serve as allegories for the outcast individual in a closed society. Britten wrote, “the more vicious the society, the more vicious the individual,” a sentiment echoed in the plot of Peter Grimes.

The four sea interludes are interspersed throughout the opera and propel the plot forward. The first sea interlude, “Dawn,” flows from the duet between Peter Grimes and Helen Orford, who sing, “My/Your voice out of the pain/ is like a hand/ That you/I can feel and know:/ Here is a friend.” The interlude depicts the sea in the early morning light as the ocean awakes, stretching its briny tendrils toward the shore and quickly receding. None of these interludes, of course, is truly naïve to the perils of the sea, and beneath the charming running lines of the flutes and violins loom ominous brass chords, a premonition of later events. The second interlude, “Sunday Morning,” chimes brightly, with the four horns sounding the church bells to beckon the townspeople to church. However, even on the day of rest, the bustling runs carry an ominous weight, and the bright bell tones from the horns melt into more portentous tolling in the percussion. “Moonlight,” which opens Act III, stumbles lugubriously at first, as if the ocean were half frozen. As the melodic line ambles upward, Britten builds tension through a series of suspensions, never resolving fully, but pushing toward an endless horizon. The final interlude, “Storm,” finally tears 17

off all semblance of a calm, happy, small town. The ocean rages. As with many storms, there are moments of respite, when the orchestra recapitulates Peter Grimes’s earlier passage: “What harbour shelters peace away from tidal waves,/ away from storms,/ What harbor can embrace terrors and tragedies?” The brass and percussion return with thunderous volume, as the woodwinds and strings shriek with galeforce winds. These sea interludes are integral to the opera Peter Grimes, but they have also formed one of Benjamin Britten’s most performed orchestral works. • JACQUES IBERT (1890-1962) Parisian composer Jacques Ibert (1890-1962), wrote Escales as a sonic postcard of the Mediterranean cruise he and his new wife, Rose-Marie Veber, a sculptor, took for their honeymoon. This was one of the pieces in Ibert’s 1922 portfolio during his residency as a Prix de Rome winner, so Ibert made sure to include his most evocative harmonies, textures, and tone colors in the large-scale late romantic work.

The first movement evokes the waters from Rome south to Palermo, and Ibert brings out the capricious nature of the Mediterranean Sea, from the calm lapping of the waves in the opening, to the crashing of waves on the shore. The second movement depicts the Tunisian cities of Tunis on the coast, and Nefta, 300 miles inland. Ibert utilizes vaguely exoticist compositional tropes (exoticism was very popular in French musical society at the time), through the opening “snake charmer”-esque melody in the oboe, accompanied by col legno (tapping the wood of the bow on the strings) and pizzicato (plucked) strings. The third movement, full of “Iberian character,” takes place in Valencia, and crescendos to a fiery Spanish-style finale, catapulted with castanets, snare drum, and tambourine. • CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862-1919) French composer Claude Debussy was the son of a sailor, and although he did not follow in his father’s footsteps, perhaps the closest he came to a life at sea was his composition named after it.

flows, and bubbles through the three movements, each evoking a separate element of the sea. The work caused quite a controversy at its premier. It was indeed difficult for the Parisian orchestra to play (Debussy wrote a letter to Stravinsky complaining that the string section had tied white handkerchiefs to their bows in protest), and the audience did not appreciate Debussy’s structural or tonal liberties.

But what truly caused outrage at the premier had little to do with the music. Parisian audiences loved a good scandal, and Debussy was having an affair with Emma Bardac, who was expecting a child with the composer. Thankfully, the outrage over Debussy’s personal life quickly subsided, and La Mer has since enjoyed the very popular reception it deserves.

Each of the three movements has wonderfully descriptive titles.

The first, “From Dawn to Midday on the Sea,” begins quietly, with bubbling strings and harp, but oscillates between calm and roiling seas. “Play of the Waves” juggles thematic snippets between the instruments of the orchestra, combining and separating the timbres in the way the sea changes color depending on how the sunlight glints off its surface or pierces through its depths. “Dialog of the Wind and the Sea” paints a sonic picture of a storm at sea, the winds battering against tumultuous waves.

Debussy’s music has often been compared to the impressionist movement in visual art. While Debussy was certainly influenced by the works of the French impressionists, he was also inspired by English painter J.M.W. Turner and Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, whose painting “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” was printed on the cover of the first published version of La Mer. • READ ALICIA’S BIOGRAPHY ON PAGE 33

guest conductor Described by the New York Times as a conductor who “radiates enthusiasm” and the Los Angeles Times as “a real grabber,” Jung-Ho Pak is known for his unique vision of the role of classical music.

Since 2007 he has been Artistic Director and Conductor of the Cape Symphony.

From 2003-2013, he was Director of Orchestras and Music Director of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. In 2012, Mr. Pak stepped down after six seasons as Artistic Director and Conductor of Orchestra Nova (San Diego), an orchestra recognized for its innovative programs and business model. Mr. Pak is also Music Director Emeritus of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. As Music Director of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra (1997-2002), Mr. Pak led the orchestra from bankruptcy to unprecedented financial success. As a nationally recognized educator, he served as Music Director with the University of Southern California (USC) Symphony and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Orchestra. He has also served as Principal Conductor of the Emmy-nominated Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and as Music Director of the Debut Orchestra, International Chamber Orchestra, NEXT Chamber Orchestra, Colburn Chamber Orchestra, and Diablo Ballet. Guest conducting has taken him to Europe, Russia, South America and Asia.

Mr. Pak is also a frequent speaker on television and radio including TED Talks and NPR appearances, as well as a clinician and conductor at national music festivals.

CHRISTOPHER S. LAMB

percussionist Grammy Award–winning percussionist Christopher S. Lamb has been hailed as a dynamic and versatile performer. He joined New York Philharmonic in 1985 as Principal Percussion and made his solo debut in the World Premiere of Joseph Schwantner’s Percussion Concerto, commissioned to celebrate the Philharmonic’s 150th anniversary. In 2011 he won a Grammy for Best Classical Instrumental Soloist for his recording of this work with the Nashville Symphony. Mr. Lamb also gave the World Premiere of Tan Dun’s Concerto for Water Percussion, a second work commissioned for him by the New York Philharmonic, and has since performed it to rave reviews around the globe. New York Philharmonic Music Director Emeritus Kurt Masur selected Mr. Lamb’s performance in Tan Dun’s Concerto for inclusion in the Orchestra’s collection of recordings highlighting Masur’s tenure as Music Director. The third commission for Mr. Lamb by the New York Philharmonic, Susan Botti’s Echo Tempo for Soprano, Percussion, and Orchestra, was given its World Premiere by Ms. Botti, Mr. Lamb, and the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Mr. Masur.

A faculty member of the Manhattan School of Music since 1989, Christopher Lamb has led clinics and master classes on almost every continent. In 1999 he was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholars Award to lecture and conduct research at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia, where he developed a model for the art of teaching percussion. In 2010, he was invited to join the faculty of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as an international fellow.

Mr. Lamb has recorded chamber works on the New World, Cala, and CRI labels, and his performance of Schwantner’s Percussion Concerto is available on the Nonesuch label. Christopher Lamb is a former member of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music.

ALAN HOVHANESS (1911-2000) And God Created Great Whales was premiered in 1970 by Andre Kostelanetz and the New York Philharmonic at one of the summer Philharmonic Promenade concerts. The conductor, inspired by the recordings of whale songs captured by Roger Payne and Frank Watlington (later released in the famous album Songs of the Humpback Whale), commissioned Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness to incorporate these songs into a piece.

Kostelanetz had reservations about the piece at first, questioning Hovhaness’s use of pentatonic scales, commonly found in East Asian music.

Hovhaness recalled in an interview that Kostelanetz complained (using vocabulary from that era), “but that idea is too Oriental. The whales don’t sing Oriental music.” But Hovhaness heard the whale songs as clearly pentatonic and incorporated a pentatonic theme from one of his early operas into the work. Today, And God Created Great Whales has become one of the composer’s most famous works. Originally the composer wanted the orchestra to play the whale songs on their instruments instead of the recording (listen for whale-glissandi in the trombones), but Kostelanetz insisted on the recorded sounds as well.

Hovhaness writes about his piece, “Free rhythmless vibrational passages, each string player playing independently, suggest waves in the vast ocean.

Undersea mountains rise and fall in horns, trombones, and tuba. Music of the whales also rises and falls like mountain ranges. Song of a whale emerges like a giant mythical sea bird. Man does not exist, has not yet been born…” The first reviews of And God Created Great Whales were less than enthusiastic. mammalian inhabitants of the sea. The calls of the whales in the piece might resonate even more for this Monterey County audience, whose bay is home to humpback whales for part of the year. • TAN DUN (1957-) Tan Dun is a Chinese-American composer who grew up in a rural village in Hunan Province during the Cultural Revolution. His childhood was spent playing folksongs and the fiddle in a local Beijing Opera troupe, rather than learning the Western Art Music canon. Famously, when he was asked to play something by Mozart at his audition for the Central Conservatory in Beijing, he replied, “Who’s Mozart?”. Since then, Tan has become one of the more famous composers to come out of China, composing, among many other pieces, the score for the award-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Water Concerto for water percussion and orchestra was commissioned

by Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic, and was premiered in 1999 with principal percussionist Christopher Lamb. Lamb mentioned in an interview that Tan heard the different percussive sounds and pitch bending as the imitation of the tones of the Chinese language.

Tan Dun writes, “In Hunan, water was a daily thing with our life.

Every day we washed everything with the river. All the old women, they always went to river for laundry, making a beautiful sound, very rhythmic. So I transpose those memories of beautiful laundry sounds, and swimming sounds, body popping sounds, water dancing sounds, water teasing sounds, water popping sound, into my orchestrations.” For Tan, water “always reminds me where I came from and where I want to go.”

The piece calls for a multitude of percussion instruments as well as extended musical techniques from the orchestra. The winds and brass are asked to play on their reeds or mouthpieces alone, separated from their instruments, and the strings use several extended techniques.

This is also one of the few orchestral pieces that requires the members of the orchestra to sing. Listen for quiet humming a minute or so into the piece. There are many sounds and instruments that rarely make

their way on to the concert stage, such as waterphones (which open the piece), Agogo bells, sieves, slinkies, and various gongs, bottles, and bowls.

The piece is a visual as well as an aural delight, and it is exciting to connect the sounds with visual cues.

In addition to the wide variety of percussive sounds, Tan incorporates his childhood memories of Chinese folk songs and Beijing Opera to create a piece that melds innovative musical ideas with Chinese folk melodies, symphonic instrumentation with brand new instruments, and orchestral structure with improvisatory passages, all of which flow together to create an evocative watery soundscape. • DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) There is much speculation and analysis surrounding the composition and reception of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony.

The narrative often points toward Shostakovich’s decreasing ability to hide his displeasure with Stalin and the Soviet government. After the enormous success of his Seventh Symphony, “Leningrad,” and his Eighth Symphony, Shostakovich came under intense scrutiny for his Ninth Symphony, which, rather than serving as a glorification of Soviet victory in WWII (as Shostakovich was expected to write), served as a reminder of the tenuous life of an artist in the Soviet Union at the time.

In one of his early letters about the symphony, Shostakovich asserted, “I would like to employ not only full orchestra but a choir and soloists, if I can find a suitable text; in any case I don’t want to be accused of drawing presumptuous analogies” (to Beethoven’s 9th great Symphony, of course).

However, after abandoning his first sketches of the work, Shostakovich finished a manuscript that, in the words of Shostakovich biographer Elizabeth Wilson, “was an about-turn typical of Shostakovich’s paradoxical nature. It caused consternation in official circles for failing to be a grandiose hymn extolling Soviet victory over the Germans. Its light-hearted parodying tone was obviously open to misinterpretation.” Shostakovich’s “paradoxical” nature comes to the fore in this symphony, which runs the gamut of emotive qualities.

PROGRAM NOTES Today, the piece seems incongruous to some, for it does not have the same gravitas in the first movement as either the Seventh or Eighth Symphonies, but is almost reminiscent of a toy soldier playing at war.

The other movements vacillate between moods, almost erratically.

The second movement displays a melancholic solemnity with the growing tension in the woodwinds and viscous strings, whereas the spritely third movement is almost childlike in its exuberance. The fourth movement opens with a sinister brass call, followed by a doleful quasi-improvisatory bassoon passage. That same somber bassoon solo tumbles, almost facetiously, into the cheeky fifth movement. Stalin did not approve of the work. Shostakovich had created a symphony in his own voice, but did not deliver the celebratory, large-scale symphonic blow-out that Stalin expected. Although after its premier in 1945, the symphony was well-received by critics, by 1948 the piece was banned by the Glavretkom, the central censorship board, despite its nomination for the Stalin Prize in 1946. The piece was again allowed for public Soviet broadcast and consumption by 1955. • ALICIA MASTROMONACO Alicia has played with the Monterey Symphony since 2007. She is also a member of the Carmel Bach Festival and Marin Symphony. A San Francisco native, she began her music studies at age seven on the piano, and took up the horn after switching from the trumpet in her middle school band program. She earned Bachelors of Music degrees in Horn Performance and Musicology from Boston University, and did graduate work at the Universität der Künste Berlin before returning to California to continue her studies. She earned a Masters of Music degree at UCLA in Horn Performance, a Masters of Arts degree in Musicology at UCSB, and is currently working on her PhD at UCSB. Alicia’s dissertation is focused on the daily lives of orchestral musicians and the organizations in which they play, and she is using her dissertation to explore the relationships between regional orchestras and their communities. Alicia is an avid outdoorsperson and animal lover.

MONTEREY SYMPHONY’S MUSIC FOR THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM IS PROUD TO PRESENT EIGHT FREEOF-CHARGE, MONDAY MORNING YOUTH CONCERTS TO 7,000 K-12 STUDENTS DURING THE 2018/19 SCHOOL YEAR.

These 45-minute, full-orchestra concerts in Carmel and Salinas provide unique opportunities for our region’s youngest audiences to experience the excitement of live classical music and deepen their connection to the arts.

Youth concerts are accompanied by interactive school visits by Monterey Symphony educators and standards-based classroom materials covering instrument families, composer biographies, theater etiquette and listening activities. Our growing bus scholarship program ensures that even the most distant and under-resourced schools can participate. For many area students, Music for the Schools events provide rare exposure to classical music as well as their only field trip of the year.
