A Letter from the Editor This past summer, Monterey Coast Realty’s sister company Carmel Realty Company celebrated its 110th anniversary. Carmel Realty Company was selling real estate and “business opportunities” here in 1913, before the city of Carmel was incorporated. Broker and Managing Director Bill Mitchell, who is also my father-in-law and an owner of both companies, will celebrate his 50th year practicing real estate with us this year.

We are proud to be one of the longest standing, family owned businesses in the region and we take this responsibility seriously.

We build relationships that are enduring and use our experience to the benefit of our clients, our team and the community.

Our tenure, along with a powerful analytics discipline, provides us with a broad perspective on the fluctuations of the real estate market. In 2023, sales across the Monterey Peninsula were down by 20% and dollar volume was off by almost 25% compared to 2022. This was a product of macro-economic pressure, inflationary concerns, and an overall downturn in housing. While volume was down 25% in 2023, it was comparable to the pre-COVID-19 market levels of 2019, which were undeniably strong. Understanding these nuances and that numbers were temporarily inflated during the pandemic puts into context that we still have a very healthy market.

Demand for our region remains high and we expect to outperform the broader housing market as we have for so many years. For more details, please see our market reports in the “About Us” section of the Monterey Coast Realty website, montereycoastrealty.com.

In this edition of Monterey Coast Homes, we feature agent Kim Bartholomay, who is an associate with the Jamal Noorzoy Residential Team. Kim’s passion for helping animals is exhibited in her work with Peace of Mind Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit which cares for any dog in any situation, keeping them for a lifetime if needed.

We also detail some of the many public golf courses on the Peninsula, which provide challenges and opportunities for golfers of any level.

Becoming a Realtor is Bartholomay’s latest endeavor, but was far from her first. “I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be selling real estate. My interests—or what I thought my interests were—were something else, but it allows me to be who I’m supposed to be. I mean, you do so many different things in real estate. Those things just completely aligned with my personality and who I am. And

I just could not be happier. It’s the most welcomed surprise that I’ve had.”

Bartholomay worked in makeup artistry before moving onto medical esthetics. Looking for a different avenue in the medical world, she got her EMT license. “I learned a lot. I saw a lot, and I did a lot. And I wouldn’t take anything back and I don’t regret any time spent there, but compassion fatigue is real, and fatigue fatigue is real, and I’m really sensitive. It just changed me as a human and how I showed up. It didn’t make me the person that I wanted to be.”

anniversary of the opening of his business, Harbor Light Tattoo in Monterey, Bartholomay came across Peace of Mind Dog Rescue. “I found Peace of Mind and instantly was like, ‘How do I not know about this local amazing organization?’

I immediately aligned with them. They showed up with a bunch of adoptable pups to our event. So, every single year after that, for his anniversary, we do a fundraiser for them.”

Peace of Mind Dog Rescue, also known as POMDR, was cofounded by Carie Broecker and Monica Rua when a friend of Broecker’s became sick. She took care of her friend’s dog, and made a vow that she would find a loving home for the animal. That turned into a fullfledged mission—prioritizing finding homes for senior dogs, and helping senior citizens or those with health issues who can no longer take care of their pets. “We do cater to senior people and disabilities, but we also do it for people that aren’t seniors as well. We do our walking brigade, we have temporary fostering if some unexpected medical situation comes up, we transport, we can take them to the groomer or the vet,” Bartholomay emphasizes.

A workplace injury made her switch gears, and opportunity sprung when her good friend, agent Renee Catania, introduced her to Monterey Coast Realty. “I met with Rob [Profeta] and then I met with Dan [Lynch], and realized there’s no other place where I belong.”

Monterey Coast Realty had all the components Bartholomay wanted. “Everyone is amazing, and who they are—the local company that’s been around for over 100 years— and the philanthropy that they do.”

Bartholomay made her way to Monterey when she started dating childhood friend Noah.

“When I would visit him, I just connected with the community and I connected with the area—it felt like home to me. And I was like ‘Hey, I know we’re just dating, but even if we stop dating, I’m still living here!’” Noah ended up being her match, and they’ve spent 12 years here as a married couple. In 2020, while helping him organize a fundraiser for the one-year

After that first fundraiser, Bartholomay, her husband, and their previously rescued husky mix, Atlas, attempted to foster a “super mutt” named Roman from POMDR, but it didn’t work out the way they expected. They ended up adopting him as their own, followed by Ella the Poodle mix.

The self-proclaimed “foster failure” went on to volunteer for the organization, training fosters and throwing events for them. She is honored to have recently joined their Continued on page 15

Bartholomay not only selflessly donates a portion of every single real estate transaction to Peace of Mind, but also advocates by spreading the word about pups who need homes. “I feature [POMDR’s] mission on any postcards I send out, and I also feature an adoptable pup on every E-blast I send out!”

According to Bartholomay, fosters are vital to the rescue, especially due to the lifetime commitment POMDR promise to their animals. “They will pass in our program if we don’t find them a home. We will, until the end of that dog’s life, take care of them. Say we adopted a pup out to somebody and that person passes away, they come back to Peace of Mind and we will find them another loving home.”

Bartholomay believes everybody can contribute something to POMDR. “If you have a specialty in dog grooming, come be a dog groomer! If you have photography, you can do that for us, graphic design, biography writing, there’s so many different ways you can be a part of it.”

Real estate now shares the same special place in Bartholomay’s heart as volunteering always has, and she credits her philanthropic background to helping her be such a hard, and happy, worker. “I think it’s very important that you find what is meant for you. Bayonet Black Horse Bayonet Golf Course was created in 1954 by General Bob McClure at the Fort Ord military base in Seaside, and was so popular, that 10 years later, the military added Black Horse Golf Course, in honor of the 11th Calvary Regiment at the Presidio of Monterey, who were nicknamed “Black Horse.”

Both courses were redesigned in 2008 by course architect Gene Bates. With views of the Monterey Bay, the two 18-hole courses have been played by golf legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson as well as by various United States Presidents. Highly ranked by Golf Advisor as well as

the public, Bayonet, a par 72, 7,104-yard course, is known to be one if not the most challenging courses on the Monterey Peninsula, with narrow fairways lined by trees and greens flanked by steep bunkers. Black Horse, at 7,024 yards with a par 72, is more open and flowing and complements Bayonet.

Besides tournaments, special events and regular rounds, youth and adults can learn to play at the Justin Russo Golf Academy, while the Bayonet Bar & Grill serves breakfast and lunch. Golfweek consistently ranks Bayonet as one of the top courses in California and the U.S.

Monterey Pines Golf Club Monterey Pines Golf Club, originally designed in 1963 as a 9-hole facility, was converted into an 18-hole regulation-length course in 1972 and then redesigned in 2009 by golf architect Marc Messier. Managed by The Navy Golf Program, the public/ military facility is known for its value and as a good place to learn the game. The par 70, 18-hole course is called the “Navy Course” by locals and borders the Monterey County Fairgrounds and the Monterey Airport. A redesign in 2009 flipped the front and back nine and added bent grass greens that provide a smooth ball roll. Two lakes create water hazards.

After a round, the Monterey Pines Grill & Bar offers breakfast, lunch and early dinner. Discounts are offered to active and retired military and Department of Defense staff.

2023 Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation of the Year by the National Philanthropy Day Committee for the Central Coast Carmel Realty Company has a rich history and a reputation for integrity and commitment to community. From the National Philanthropy Day's website, "National Philanthropy Day is a special day set aside by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) to recognize the great contributions of philanthropists and those active in the philanthropic community whose purpose is to enrich the world." Each year, throughout North America, nominations are submitted for individuals, corporations, and service organizations "who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the community as a whole, through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, innovative program development, volunteerism, and outstanding leadership in the field of philanthropy."

The National Philanthropy Day Committee for the Central Coast selected Carmel Realty Company as the 2023 Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation of the Year, after being nominated by Siobhan Greene and the Hospice Giving Foundation. Spanning the area between Monterey and east toward Salinas, is California State Route 68, also known as, the Monterey–Salinas Highway.

Breakfast, lunch, snacks and draft beers on tap are available at the typically sunny location set amongst the oak trees, which offers different women’s and men’s clubs that provide camaraderie on the course. The hilly landscape at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch requires thoughtfulness to make your shots, with uphill, dogleg holes and water hazards.

Poppy Hills Golf Course Owned by the Northern California Golf Association, this Pebble Beach course promises it’s the place to “not only test yourself but enjoy yourself!” Golf Digest named it one of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play, but it promises fun for all skill levels. Located on 17 Mile Drive, the course was designed in 1986 by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and offers a par 71, 7,002-yard course that winds through the Del Monte Forest. Poppy Hills hosted the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament from 1991-2009. A $10 million renovation in 2014 by Mike Gorman reduced water consumption and extended the layout, resulting in “Best Renovation” awards by top golf publications. The restaurant has also received warm reviews. Porter’s Grill & Pub is popular even for those who couldn’t tell a 9-iron from a putter and features contemporary American cuisine adjacent to the course.

Carmel Valley Ranch Golf Course Designed by Pete Dye, Carmel Valley Ranch has been ranked with the top resort golf courses in the country by Travel + Leisure.

Located in a typically sunny microclimate in beautiful Carmel Valley, the holes weave through the resort’s vineyards and lavender fields, past ponds and oak groves. The par 70, 6,234-yard course has a slope of 132; there’s also a driving range, short-game area and a putting green to practice. The Clubhouse has firepits with views of the Santa Lucia Mountains and offers great food and drinks as well as regular events. A strong children’s program integrates youth into the course, while those vacationing at The Ranch can play 18 holes, swim and enjoy tennis, pickleball, archery, axe throwing and relaxing in the organic garden, all in a weekend.

Del Monte Golf Course The California State Amateur was created at Del Monte, a landmark course that opened in 1897 and was crucial in establishing golf in the west. The oldest continuously operating course west of the Mississippi was initially designed by Charles E. Maud as a nine-hole course and then expanded to 18 holes in 1903. “Small, sloping, old-school greens” attracted the sport’s top players; the Del Monte Championship was a title that marked its winner as the best player in California. Today, the best golfers are still challenged by the par 72, 6,365-yard course with a slope of 127.

Pine, oak and cypress trees dot the fairways and challenge golfers planning their shots amongst tricky bunkers. The Monterey City Amateur has been hosted at the course since 1953, along with the Monterey Open Championship which began in 1926. Owned

by Pebble Beach Company but located in Monterey adjacent to The Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa, the course offers refreshments at Del Monte Bar & Grill.
