Local Realtors Champion for a Cure The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Aims to End Cancer By Brett Wilbur Nancy Whitman and John Romley, of Carmel Realty Company and sister company Monterey Coast Realty, first met outside of work, while volunteering for the Monterey Bay Area Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), a nonprofit that has profoundly affected them both. In 2019, Whitman and Romley found themselves on different “teams,” racing to raise the most money possible in a 10-week campaign for LLS that culminated in an awards gala. The two ended up being named the 2019 Man and Woman of the Year, in honor of leading the groups that raised the most funds for LLS. Whitman was particularly surprised at the “win,” especially since she started volunteering for LLS only several weeks before the fundraising competition. “I had a good friend, Heather MacRae, who was a former Woman of the Year recipient, and she passed from cancer the year before I joined,” Whitman shares. “That was so difficult, and I watched the community around her obviously suffer. She was a young woman and so influential in my life and for so many others. She was a mom and all these things I could relate to. I felt very pulled to help for that reason alone. Also, my husband’s mother had passed a few years prior from cancer.” Whitman explains that while LLS is centered around blood cancer research, the studies that are funded end up assisting in the attempt to cure cancer in general. “That was a driving force for me,” she says. Romley had become involved with LLS a year before Whitman, when his friend Adam Roach, a 5-time Big Sur Marathon champion, was running his own LLS campaign for 2018 Man of the Year. After Romley introduced Roach to a group of fellow Realtors, he was awed by the generosity that took place. “Before Adam was done speaking about the LLS campaign, my phone was blowing up with offers from my co-workers to buy tables for the gala and to donate auction items,” Romley recounts. “Apparently Adam was taking notes, because after he won Man of the Year in 2018, he took me to lunch. I thought it was just going to be us, but people from LLS were also there and they said, ‘So, the reason we are actually here is to ask if you will run in 2019.’ I thought about it briefly then said, ‘Heck yeah!’ We all know someone who is fighting cancer, or has lost the battle, or has beat the battle.” 8

One of Romley’s friends, Connor Beeman, a spokesperson for LLS in Texas, is in remission from chronic myeloid leukemia. “He is leading an active and healthy life thanks to medication that LLS developed through their research and got FDA approved,” Romley says. Leading up to his campaign, Romley’s grandmother was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, and sadly passed away 6 weeks later. “When that happened so fast, I wanted to find a therapeutic way to honor her,” he says. “Then I learned that with every $50,000 you raise in the campaign, you get to honor someone with a research portfolio. I was determined to make that $50,000…I wanted to also honor Connor, so I pushed myself to raise over $100,000 and get two research portfolios…they earmark each portfolio for research in honor of the person named and what type of cancer they are fighting.” During the fundraising campaign, Whitman was grateful for her event planning background. Like Romley, she held as many fundraising events as possible before the final gala, where significant money was raised through auction items. With the money she raised, Whitman honored Heather MacRae, designating a research portfolio in her honor to pediatric cancer research. John’s wife Teresa also has an event planning background and his flagship event during his campaign was an ‘80s prom. “It was a riot,” he shares. “We held it at the MPCC Beach House, and people showed up in bleached blond mullets and puffy retro dresses and we had a DeLorean parked out front.” Romley and Whitman emphasize the collaboration they received from Carmel Realty Company. “It is so incredible to work for a company that supports our own personal philanthropic eagerness in the community,” Whitman says. “They are a small, family run company that does big things.”

As parents, Romley and Whitman find the pediatric cancer research arm of LLS is particularly moving. Each year, a boy or a girl is chosen to represent the LLS campaign. In 2019, Julian Castillo was named the “Boy of the Year” while he was battling cancer. Continued on page 12

This is life: it’s not always easy, and we are all human.
“We get behind the family and child so they can feel that they are champions, and they can get through this,” Whitman says. “We are just there as the workhorses to try to raise a crazy amount of money in 10 weeks. Julian was the one fighting the real battle.” Now in remission, Julian was named “Hero of the Year” for the 2022 campaign. “Some of the funds we raised in 2019 went to him and his family,” Whitman explains. “In total, the teams in 2019 raised $278,448.” For both Romley, who is now serving for the third year on the LLS leadership team, and Whitman, their involvement with LLS has altered them deeply. “[Funding cancer research] is part of who I am and how I identify myself,” Romley says. “I am open to sharing personal experiences with my clients and community. It is so powerful to
add that human layer to our relationship, more than just having a relationship with clients over buying and selling houses.” Whitman, who is currently president of the National Charity League (NCL), Monterey Bay Chapter, is excited to share her passion for volunteering with her daughter.
“I wanted to do NCL with my daughter so she could start to feel the benefits of how great it feels to help our community,” she says. “It’s not to win something or be recognized. That was never the goal. “There are parents who have to quit their jobs and find a place to stay by the hospital that their child is staying in while undergoing cancer treatments…They shouldn’t have to be worrying about money while they or their child is fighting to live. We want to make this easier for people. This is life: it’s not always easy, and we are all human.”
$278,448 was raised at the 2019 Monterey Bay Area Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Fundraiser.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS) is a global leader in the fight against cancer. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world, provides free information and support services, and is the voice for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care. 12

Tales from the Sails
Viewing Monterey County from the Sea By Brett Wilbur Realtor Martha Davis, of Monterey Coast Realty, grew up in Pacific Grove, born into a family of aquatic lovers. Her mother, Norma, met her father, Chuck, when he was her dive instructor; he’s now a wellknown underwater cinematographer who has worked with Jacques Cousteau. At a young age, Davis was dropped off at sailing camp at Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club (MPYC) with her older brother, Cole, and found herself enamored with the sport along with her hometown. “I loved growing up here near the lighthouse, and I think I’m actually one of the few people who was dreading leaving for college,” she says. “I loved the vibe of Pacific Grove, the beach, the ocean and the community.” Davis ended up at UC Irvine, where she found a community centered around her love of sailing. As a varsity sailor scholar athlete, Davis was able to structure her classes around her sailing team commitments. Several years after graduating, she happily made her way back to the local area, and currently lives in Carmel with her husband, Dr. Ryan Lehr, and Cheeto, their Irish Setter/ Golden Retriever mix. Q: How did you end up spending so much time out on the Monterey Bay? A: My family is a huge water family…my dad and brother are super into diving, and I got into it after they did…My brother and I sailed Optis and FJs at the MPYC summer camp in middle school. We would start out in the harbor, then as we got more comfortable, we moved out through the channel and into the Monterey Bay. Our bay can be really calm or have big wind and swells. It’s good training for whatever conditions you may encounter in other areas….I loved being on the water and with my friends. I also thought it was a cool environment to be in because sailing is something you can do your whole life. Q: When did you get more serious about sailing? A: I coached at my former summer camp in high school and joined a sailing team, made up of students from Salinas, Monterey and Pacific Grove high schools. We sailed FJs, which are about 14 feet long and manned by two people. There are different fleets you can sail in. Some people will do big ocean racing, which some of my friends and brother do once and awhile. I mostly stick to buoy racing: going off marks out in front of Stillwater Cove, Lovers Point

and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, or they put out giant temporary buoys to race around. Q: What position did you hold on the UC Irvine sailing team? A: I always crewed. There is a big misconception that when you sail, you are always at the helm. I was small in high school, and college and varsity skippers usually liked having less weight on the boat, so I got a lot of opportunities to compete in big sailing events. Having less weight on larger boats can be a bonus too because you can have more hands managing everything. Now I kind of bounce around on larger boats and trim the jib, mainsail, spinnaker...whatever is needed. Q: How did you find yourself back in Monterey County after college? A: I loved being here, and my family and friends are here. The nice thing about sailing for me is it’s always something I can leave and come back to. It feels comfortable and fun and it’s not something you grow out of. After sailing almost every single day in college, I needed a break from racing. When I moved back to the area, I started going out every Wednesday in Monterey with some friends who have a Shields boat. Shields are about 30-foot-long, wooden sloop boats. They are really cool old collegiate boats from the ’70s and aren’t like those carbon fiber, super modern racing boats. There is a huge fleet of them here which makes for more fun and competitive racing.
Q: How do you mix sailing and real estate? A: I’ve had to dial down sailing a bit as my career started to be more demanding. I go out maybe once or twice a month rather than every week like I used to. I recently became a member of Stillwater Yacht Club and I’m excited because they have Santanas, which are smaller keel boats that can be taken out once you pass a sailing test. The goal is to have a boat to access more often and to take out with friends. They also have FJs there, which is what I grew up sailing. As much as I love sailing, I’ve never had the desire to own a boat, based on the fees and maintenance, but it’s so nice to have access to them! Q: Why is sailing your favorite hobby? A: I can leave it and come back to it. It can be a social sport; it can be a solo sport; you can hang out with your friends or meet new people…it just opens up this whole world depending upon what you want from it. You can be a fair-weather sailor; you can do it for vacation…there are so many ways to experience it. Q: And when you are experiencing it, what’s the best part of it? A: In our area, everyone loves the water and sees it every day, but to look back at the coast from being in the middle of the Bay is an incredible perspective…we will be out sometimes and see pods of dolphins. Or if you get close to a whale watching boat you might see whales too. Q: What are some of your favorite memories from being out on the water? A: My brother chartered and captained a boat for us in the British Virgin Islands…He captains oil tankers for a living and might still be the youngest captain of those in the world. My other favorite experience was competing in the Shields Nationals a few years ago. I was in a three-day race in Martha’s Vineyard, where my family is from, in the craziest conditions I’ve ever sailed in. People were falling overboard, and I was bailing out water as huge waves were coming over the back of the boat. That was just wild, and I got to meet all these amazing sailors.…
