About the magazine

“Gente di mare” is a typographical magazine that aims to let you discover a new city trough the eyes of a young photographer and a designer both born and grew up in the city. The city in question is Bari, located in the “heel”of Italy. Let yourself be curious about architecture, stories of people and traditions.

About the style

The choice of this strong typography aims to create a desired and visible contrast between the topic and the way it is presented. Furthermore, the use of two fonts: “Bari Lettering” and “Bari Ornaments”, realised by BCPT Associati Perugia, which are inspired by the ornaments of the old city give a more deep experience of the book. New and old can this way coexist and invite to the discovery of the content.

About the photographer

All the photos in this magazine are made and edited by Alessandro Lupelli, a young amateur photographer of 18 years old. Alessandro was born and raised in Bari and has embarked his path in the world of photography focusing on the city and its storytelling. Some of the comments in the magazine are written by him too as he actually feels the topic part of his stoy and culture. The goal of this collaboration is the discovery: of a place, its characteristics, its traditions and the people who make it alive and inspire it.

About the book

This is a redesign of a book written 1899 from the Tessmann Library of Bolzano South Tyrol reserve collection. This high readable book allows the reader to have a clear and fluid experience with the product. In its simplicity it enables and prefers an understandable reading of a complex text.

About the graphics

The book also reserves some small peculiarities, such as mysterious and original illustrations, typographic quotes, uv printed pages in green and yellow to have the feeling of it by touching, and a white-on-white cover that allows the reader to feel the snake on its surface even though it is not entirely and clearly visible.

About the Font

Based on and derived from Didot, for its skeleton and high contrasts, this font is quite formal, although there are small, more playful elements given by the various serifs and some slightly more modern letters.

About the process

The creative process went throug the selection of a well known font, the tracing of its skeleton and after the creation of brushes and ideation and developing of its serifs, endings, terminals and all other peculiarities of our choice.

About “Design meets handicap”

The main theme of the whole process has been “Design meets handicap”: this aimed to make students from the Free university of Bolzano-Bozen collaborate whith the “Protected workshops for people with disabilities” of Prad and Latsch in Val Venosta, for designing new products and creating activities to pitch to both structures.

About the project

“The Wooden Set” and “Skiaccio” were given birth at the end of two different design sprints, both of which aimed to enhance their production area and the tradition.

What makes those two products stand out above all else on the market is the particular care in choosing materials and testing production processes personally, to fulfill all the needs and the attentions required by the laboratories which collaborate with us.

About design sprint 1

The Wooden Set includes three wooden kitchen tools that take inspiration from the tradition behind the classic wooden spoon, the basis of every italian, and not only, kitchen!

The process started with the tracing of the recurrent shapes in the chosen reference objects to continue with a deep resarch on the details, which make those tools so peculiar: for instance the holes, the various edges or the semispheres.

31
32

About design sprint 2

Skiaccio was born from an antique brass mortar found in the collection of the Dietenheim FolkloreMuseum. In this case, the starting object was fundamental as it was followed by a redesign process that considered and used a series of ethnographic issues and questions related to it as strength points. Here the basis was playing with basic geometrical shapes to simplify to the maximus its production.

About the idea

Out Of The Blue is born from a strong passion for fashion and and personal reflection on what we can do to improve our quality of life without affecting the world around us. The protagonist of the project is the most widely used item of clothing: jeans. Often we don’t think about the environmental impact of the whole fashion system, but contrary to what we might think, it is quite significant. In addition, there are problems related to the health of workers and users, and water pollution produced by the entire creation of the garment.

37
38

About the installation

The installation is made up entirely of broken, damaged or simply used jeans that have been donated for the project through a collection campaign and will be donated to charity for use by those in need. The whole thing hangs entirely from the ceiling at a height of about 2 meters from the ground.

About the booklet

The booklet contains the research and sociological analysis of the environmental impact of the garment and the relationship people have with it. The latter is aimed at raising awareness of the subject among those who are beginning to approach the consumerist world of shopping: adolescents and children.
