HIGHLIGHTS OF 2024

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2024
Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) was pleased to announce that it is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for 2024. This achievement puts MSLC in the top 2% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance along with numerous other accolades from Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients. Healthgrades also recognized MSLC for exceptional care in Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, Gastrointestinal Disorders, and Diabetic Hospitalizations.
Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) announced that it has been named #1 in New York State for Critical Care two years in a row according to a new analysis released by Healthgrades. Critical Care encompasses in-hospital treatment for patients with life-threatening conditions such as sepsis, pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, and diabetic emergencies.
MSLC achieved Magnet® Designation by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), which is the highest achievable honor for nursing.
In 2024, MSLC was certified as a Great Place to WorkTM for the sixth consecutive year. MSLC is one of thirteen hospitals in New York State to receive this recognition, which was voted on specifically by MSLC employees themselves. Employee well-being is a top priority at MSLC and we are proud to provide an environment that fosters inclusivity and celebrates diversity in a safe, warm and welcoming manner.
Throughout 2024, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) proudly expanded the programs and services we offer to our community—developments that reflect our unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality care tailored to the needs of the individuals we are privileged to serve.
A central focus in 2024 was enhancing outpatient services to improve access to care. This progress has been driven in large part by the continued growth of The Medical Group at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall. The Medical Group continues to expand primary care in Cornwall and Newburgh, delivering on our promise of same-day appointments, “Sick today, seen today.” The Medical Group is also focusing on building its breadth of specialties. In recognition of the growing prevalence of diabetes, and challenges accessing care in the community, the Medical Group welcomed its first Endocrinologist, Dr. Ashok Vaswani, this past Fall. Dr. Vaswani brings over 30 years of experience treating Endocrine disorders. During 2024, the group also successfully recruited a second Infectious Disease physician and a Colorectal surgeon, that started in the first quarter of 2025.
Our embrace of innovation remained steadfast in 2024, as we introduced new technologies that enhance our ability to diagnose and treat patients, bringing world-class care closer to home:
• Radixact® Radiation Therapy, which allows us to treat cancers with greater precision, fewer sessions, and less impact on surrounding tissue.
• Blue Light Cystoscopy which offers earlier and more accurate detection of bladder cancer.
• MSLC became the first hospital in New York State to offer the Hydros™ Robotic System, an AI-powered platform for Aquablation® Therapy, revolutionizing treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program reached an important milestone, achieving full accreditation spanning the next ten years. This summer, we will proudly graduate our inaugural class of internal medicine residents—a major achievement and a testament to our commitment to developing the future physician workforce right here in Orange County.
Our continued growth was matched by the achievements of the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation, which saw a 57% increase in donors—both new and returning—and record-breaking support for our events. In 2024, we proudly launched our inaugural Nurses’ Night Out during Nurses’ Week and reintroduced our Annual Gala, which raised an unprecedented amount for MSLC. We invite you to read on to learn more about the Foundation’s inspiring accomplishments.
Most importantly, 2025 marks a major milestone in our journey—150 years of delivering exceptional care to our community. This anniversary is more than a celebration; it is a testament to the strength of our organization and the unwavering support of those we serve. We owe this legacy to you—our patients, families, physicians, staff, donors, and partners. Your trust and dedication have made our mission possible, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
To commemorate this special anniversary, we are hosting a series of fundraisers and events throughout the year, culminating in a grand 150th Year Gala Celebration on September 13, 2025. We look forward to honoring our past while embracing the future.
From the bottom of our hearts—thank you. Together, with your support, we are excited for another year of growth, innovation, and unwavering commitment to our community. If this is your first time learning about Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall, we hope our story inspires you to become a part of it.

In March 2024, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) held a ribbon cutting for its new Radixact® System, which can treat virtually any radiation therapy indication, including breast, lung, prostate and head and neck cancers. This non-invasive treatment can also be used on complex cases such as total marrow irradiation, providing more patients in the Hudson Valley with the opportunity to benefit from the fast, highly precise radiation treatments it delivers.
Montefiore St Luke’s Cornwall is the first hospital in New York State to offer Aquablation® therapy with the new HYDROS™ Robotic System, the nextgeneration platform to treat men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate. Aquablation therapy, now delivered by an AI-powered robotic system, is clinically proven to provide significant, durable BPH symptom relief while preserving sexual function and continence across prostates of all shapes and sizes.
Throughout 2024, MSLC continued its community education and engagement with attendance at local events, festivals, and fairs.
Members of the MSLC Patient Navigation and Community Relations team attended the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Annual Wellness Fair in August of 2024. The team provided health screenings and information about programs and services offered by MSLC.

SPECIAL THANKS: THE KAPLAN FAMILY
On May 9, 2024, MSLC celebrated Nurses Week with the St. Luke’s Health System Foundation hosting its first Nurses’ Night Out at Hurricane Grill & Wings in Newburgh. MSLC nurses were treated to a night of good food and live music, free of charge.
The Elaine Kaplan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall hosted its 27th Annual NICU Graduate Birthday Party on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center. Over two hundred former patients, families, friends, MSLC staff, and members of the Kaplan family, gathered to celebrate those of all ages born in the NICU since its inception in 1997. This year’s celebration included many generously donated activities such as face painting, a teddy bear clinic, a therapy dog, cupcake decorating, and a visit from Newburgh Fire and EMS. A heartfelt thank you to the Newburgh Armory Unity Center Center and the Kaplan Family for their generosity in hosting this event annually.
“Each year, as we gather to honor the anniversary of our NICU journey, we are reminded of the strength, hope, and resilience that brought us through. It’s not just a celebration of time passed, but a tribute to the extraordinary care that made these milestones possible. In the NICU, every day is a victory, and every year is a testament to the power of compassion and perseverance.”
- Dr. Prabhakar Kocherlakota (Dr. KP), Medical Director, Elaine Kaplan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is often one of the most challenging and emotional moments in a patient’s life. That’s where Tina Unsworth, RN, MSN, CMSRN, and Paula Paez, LMSW, come in. Tina, an Oncology Navigator at the Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Littman Cancer Center, and Paula, a Social Work Navigator, serve as essential guides for patients and their families throughout their medical journey. Tina’s role is made possible through generous donor support to the Foundation.
As experienced and compassionate professionals, Tina and Paula work closely with nearly every patient who walks through the Center’s doors—from the very first appointment through every stage of treatment. Their support extends far beyond clinical care. They help patients navigate and overcome physical, financial, and social barriers, and they also foster emotional well-being by hosting weekly support groups, giving patients a network to lean on.
Their dedication has led to meaningful results. Last year, Tina and Paula secured more than
$37,000 in grants to fund cancerrelated services for patients.
“We remove barriers,” says Tina. “Navigation is at the heart of what we do. As a program, we support each other—we are a family. And we are a family for the patients who rely on us.”
Patient navigation programs, like the Oncology Navigation Program, are not new to MSLC. From cardiology and chronic disease management to maternity care, navigation programs have long been integral to patient-centered care throughout the hospital. The success of these initiatives sparked a broader vision: What if every patient at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall had access to this level of personalized support?
That vision became a reality with the creation of The Joan Cusack McGuirk (JCM) Center for Patient Navigation, named after MSLC’s former President and CEO.
Launched in January 2025, The JCM Center for Patient Navigation is designed to bridge the gap between patients and the medical team by creating a clear, individualized care plan from the outset.
“What we have created is a more robust navigation program that will capture a broader net of patients,” said Margaret Allers, Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer. “And if a patient’s needs extend beyond what MSLC can provide, navigators will coordinate care within the Montefiore Einstein System, ensuring a seamless transition allowing patients to focus on what matters most—their health and healing.”
The program opened in January of 2025 and currently has ten navigators.
“We are grateful for the Foundation’s support of the Oncology Navigation Program,” said Nicole Pogelschek, Director of Radiation Oncology and The JCM Center for Patient Navigation. “Because of this support, 3,500 patients have been positively impacted—lives have truly been changed. With The JCM Center for Patient Navigation, we can change even more lives offering an unparalleled level of care to our neighbors, families, and friends.”
Shown below: The JCM Center for Patient Navigation Team
The St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation hosted its annual Golf and Tennis Event on July 24, 2024 at the Powelton Club in Newburgh. Through the support of our sponsors, donors, friends, and partners, we were able to raise $146,000 in net proceeds to benefit MSLC!

MSLC netted the HIGHEST AMOUNT in its history, with $331,000 in proceeds!
For 150 years, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MLSC) has been dedicated to providing compassionate care to our neighbors, friends, and families. Our mission is to ensure that this vital community hospital continues to serve future generations for another 150 years.
Estate Planning is not just about organizing your assets—it’s about ensuring your values, passions, and goals continue to make an impact after your time here is complete. It’s an essential step in securing your family’s future, providing for loved ones, and supporting causes you care about.
Estate Planning gives you the opportunity to define how you want your wealth and possessions to be handled, while also leaving a legacy that reflects your personal convictions. By making thoughtful decisions today, you can create a plan that gives you peace of mind and enables your loved ones to follow your wishes with ease.
The MSLC Legacy Society honors those who have made the meaningful decision to include MSLC in their estate plans. Members of the MSLC Legacy Society will be acknowledged in the Foundation’s Annual Report to the Community and enjoy exclusive benefits, including an annual cocktail reception celebrating their impactful support. We invite you to join the MSLC Legacy Society by leaving a lasting legacy of health and happiness.
Why should you consider becoming a member of the MSLC Legacy Society and include the Foundation in your Estate Plan?
1
CREATE A LEGACY WITH LONG-TERM IMPACT:
By designating a gift to the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation, you contribute to a cause that is meaningful to you and ensure that future generations will benefit for worldclass healthcare, close to home.
2
TAX
BENEFITS:
Charitable contributions made through your estate plan may offer tax deductions and reduce estate taxes.
3
FLEXIBLE GIVING OPTIONS:
Estate gifts can be tailored to fit your specific financial goals and philanthropic interests.
“It is an honor to be a member of the Board of Trustees and serve as its Chair, but titles don’t matter without action. That’s why, on top of my participation in hospital governance, fundraising and events, it was important to me to provide for the hospital in my estate planning. I personally chose to name the hospital foundation as a beneficiary of one of my retirement accounts, since my family will be well-supported by other assets. I invite everyone to consider something similar, and to talk to their estate planning lawyer or financial advisor if they have questions about how to do it.”
- Austin
DuBois, Esq. – Chair, MSLC Board of Trustees
Austin with his daughter, Ila, born last year
“I have decided to leave Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall in my estate plans so they can continue the great work being done. I watched my mother receive wonderful care and I myself was so impressed with the care I received after undergoing hip replacement surgery in November of 2022. As a native of Newburgh – as were my parents – it is also important to me that the city and surrounding area has access to world class healthcare. I would encourage others to consider an estate gift to the hospital as well – it is a lasting impact that benefits others!”
- Michael Kirtio – Chair, St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation Board of Directors
We encourage you to think about your legacy and help keep high quality healthcare in our community for generations to come. Donors have a wide range of options including designating appreciated securities, retirement plan assets, life insurance policies, real estate, donor advised funds, and more. Please reach out to Nicholas Shannon at the St. Luke’s Health System Foundation to learn more at (845) 568-2107 or by email at nshannon@montefioreSLC.org.

In 2024, the Foundation assumed responsibility for the lobby vendor sales program, welcoming local vendors to set up shop for the day in the lobbies of the Newburgh and Cornwall campuses. The only requirement was that a portion of their sales be donated to the Foundation. The program has since expanded to include food trucks as well!
Both employees and visitors have enjoyed the diverse selection of merchandise and food, and the Foundation is grateful for the continued support from vendors and customers alike. It’s a true example of community supporting community – and that’s what it’s all about!

Each year, MSLC employees have the opportunity to support the hospital through the Employee Giving Campaign. Contributions from the 2024 campaign were directed toward the areas of greatest need or departments and initiatives chosen by the employee donor.
We’re proud to report that 100% of our leadership team—including Managers, Directors, and Senior Staff—participated in the campaign. Here, in their own words, are just a few of the reasons why our team members choose to give back to MSLC:
“Kindness and giving are important to me. MSLC has been the community hospital for our family members, ourselves and our friends. MSLC has outstanding and incredible leadership and staff and does a spectacular job of taking care of patients, families and their community Philanthropy is an expression of gratitude which is paramount………one of the many reasons I give.”
- Linda Dombroski, RN, MSN, NP, Administrative Nursing Supervisor
“My mom always said, ‘Charity begins at home.’ So, this is our home when we are here- we have to protect and preserve it!”
- Teri Egitto RN, BSN, MBA, Director, Perioperative Services
“I give because I believe in the people in this building. I trust in their knowledge and skills to care for my family and friends. I trust in the foundation to ensure the funds are distributed appropriately.”
- Margaret Stack, Nursing Admin Supervisor
“I believe in giving back to the community and MSLC. The hospital does good work in taking care of its patients and I find that admirable”

Thank you to our family of supporters – the impact they make at MSLC is exceptional! The donors listed in this annual report gave a gift between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024. We apologize for any omissions or inaccuracies. If you have any questions or updates, please contact the Foundation at Foundation@MontefioreSLC.org or 845-568-2580. Thank you again.
Each member of our 150th Council has been entrusted with hosting a friend-raiser or partnering with a local organization to support MSLC and share the incredible work our community hospital is doing.
To assist in planning such a monumental event, we have assembled a 150th Steering Council of community leaders and steadfast hospital supporters who will bring the energy, talent, and community spirit that will propel us into the next 150 years.

On November 14, 2024, the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation held a Golden Girls themed Murder Mystery Dinner. Attendees enjoyed a night at the Silk Factory with great food, drinks, and an interactive show. The event also included gift basket raffles and more. This was the first of many events that will help the hospital in celebrating its 150th anniversary.
In October, Ellen Smitchger Kelly, Margaret “Chip” Pelella, and Joan Cusack McGuirk proudly kicked off our 150th anniversary celebration by hosting the very first friend-raising event at Storm King Lounge and Fare. With over 75 guests in attendance, it was a wonderful evening filled with connection, engagement, and inspiration as attendees learned more about the latest developments at the hospital.
A heartfelt thank you to Ellen, Chip, and Joan for setting the tone for what promises to be a memorable year of celebration, community, and continued impact!
