As we reflect on 2025, we are grateful for a remarkable year at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC). Our 150th anniversary provided an opportunity to celebrate our history, recognize the people who make our work possible, and look ahead to the future of healthcare in the Hudson Valley. Through the support of our community, including $1.7 million raised by the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation, this milestone year strengthened our ability to expand services, invest in innovation, and continue delivering compassionate care close to home.
Throughout the year, MSLC increased access to high-quality care across our region. The Medical Group at MSLC brought on new specialties including a hematologist/oncologist and a colorectal surgeon ensuring that our patients can receive advanced care without leaving the Hudson Valley. You can learn more about our new providers and service expansions on page 12. In the year ahead, The Medical Group will continue expanding its services, building on the recent additions of Gastroenterology and Rheumatology, with further expansion planned to include Neurology, Pulmonology, and Physical Therapy.
At the start of the year, we launched The Joan Cusack McGuirk Center for Patient Navigation to help patients and families navigate the healthcare system, from preventive screenings and appointments to insurance support. In its first year, the Navigation Team assisted over 11,000 patients and their family members across inpatient and outpatient settings, improving access to care and coordination of services. The Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine also relocated to a larger space on the Cornwall campus and added a third hyperbaric chamber, expanding access to advanced treatment for patients with complex wound care needs. Our dedication to excellence was reaffirmed through the renewal of our Magnet® designation, placing MSLC among the nation’s most elite organizations for nursing excellence. Additional reaccreditations, including Cancer Services, the Breast Program, Stroke Certification, Laboratory Services, and Sleep Medicine, reflect our continued commitment to the highest standards of care. In addition, 2025 marked a significant milestone with the graduation of MSLC’s first class of internal medicine residents, reinforcing our commitment to medical education and helping train the next generation of physicians who will serve communities like ours throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond.
Community support played a vital role in the progress we achieved last year. In 2025, the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation, its board members, donors and partners, came together in extraordinary ways during our 150th anniversary year. Community events, friend-raisers, and fundraising initiatives strengthened longstanding relationships, welcomed new supporters, and generated critical philanthropic support that enhanced patient programs, technology, and services across our hospital. Our annual Gala was a recordbreaking success, bringing together more than 600 supporters and generating over $465,000 in net proceeds to directly support patient care. As the Foundation continues to grow and expand its reach, these partnerships remain essential to advancing our mission and meeting the evolving needs of our region.

MSLC EARNS SECOND MAGNET® DESIGNATION
Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) has once again achieved Magnet® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet® Recognition Program®—the highest national honor for professional nursing practice. This marks the hospital’s second designation, reaffirming its sustained commitment to nursing excellence, patient-centered care, and clinical innovation.
Magnet® recognition places MSLC among a select group of healthcare organizations nationwide that meet rigorous standards for nursing leadership, professional practice, and patient outcomes. Widely regarded as the gold standard in nursing, the designation is also considered in national rankings, including U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals.”
“Being named a Magnet® organization reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery,” said Daniel Maughan, President and CEO of MSLC. “This prestigious recognition represents the dedication, compassion, and collaboration of our entire hospital team. Every department plays a vital role in creating the environment that makes Magnet® designation possible.”
To earn re-designation, hospitals must undergo a comprehensive review every four years, demonstrating adherence to five core Magnet® components and 82 standards that measure quality, safety, and performance. The process includes extensive documentation, data analysis, and an on-site evaluation. MSLC not only met these rigorous standards but earned nine exemplars for clinical outcomes, outperforming national benchmarks across its inpatient units for eight consecutive quarters.
In October, several nursing team members attended the annual Magnet® Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, to celebrate this momentous achievement.

ST. LUKE’S NURSING PIONEERS
Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall began as a small three-bed hospital founded by St. George’s Episcopal Church and has grown into a cornerstone of care for our community. Central to this history is the hospital’s distinguished School of Nursing, which helped prepare generations of nurses dedicated to compassionate service.
In July, the hospital was honored to recognize Barbara Charron Millspaugh and Anna Swetz Alessi, graduates of the St. Luke’s School of Nursing who trained during World War II — a time when the nation faced a critical shortage of nurses. Following the passage of the Bolton Act in 1943, the United States Public Health Service provided scholarships to qualified nursing students, and St. Luke’s was proud to be among the accredited schools preparing nurses to answer the call to serve.
Members of the Nursing Honor Guard stood in tribute during the reception. The Honor Guard is a dedicated group of nurses who volunteer their time to formally recognize fellow nurses for their lifelong commitment to the profession through a brief ceremonial tribute. Their presence made the occasion especially meaningful as we celebrated a legacy of compassion, courage, and service that continues to define the St. Luke’s nursing tradition today.

Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall proudly celebrated the recipients of its 2025 Annual Awards, honoring physicians and staff whose dedication, expertise, and compassion continue to elevate care throughout the Hudson Valley.
Award recipients were selected through an open nomination process, with colleagues recognizing peers whose contributions embody the mission and values of MSLC.

PHYSICIANS OF THE YEAR
Dr. Paul Reichman was named Community-Based Physician of the Year in recognition of his longstanding commitment to patients and the community he calls home. A member of the Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Medical Group and a highly respected surgeon, Dr. Reichman has served MSLC in multiple capacities over the course of his distinguished career.
Dr. Prabhakar Kocherlakota, affectionately known as Dr. KP, received the HospitalBased Physician of the Year award for his decades of service in the Elaine Kaplan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Since the NICU opened in 1997, he has cared for generations of newborns and supported countless families during some of their most critical moments.
NURSE OF THE YEAR
Earlier in the year, Donna Ramsey, was named Nurse of the Year. With 35 years of experience and a respected presence as a Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department and Trauma Center, Donna exemplifies professionalism, mentorship, and steady leadership in highpressure environments – see story on page 26.
LEADER OF THE YEAR
Nicole Pogelschek, Director of Radiation Oncology and The Joan Cusack-McGuirk (JCM) Center for Patient Navigation, was honored as Leader of the Year. Under her guidance, The JCM Center has expanded essential support services and strengthened access to care for patients navigating complex diagnoses.
EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
At the annual holiday celebration, attended by more than 300 colleagues, Jamie Scarpati was recognized as Employee of the Year. A Physical Therapist who joined MSLC in 2003, Jamie is known for her clinical excellence, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to patient-centered care.

EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE
A LIFE SAVED, A COMMUNITY GRATEFUL
In October, the MSLC Trauma and Emergency team was formally recognized by the Town of Rombout, NY, for their role in saving the life of Assistant Fire Chief John Lucariello.
On August 11, 2025, Assistant Chief Lucariello suffered a sudden cardiac event shortly after arriving on the scene of a reported house fire. Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Fishkill Police Department, Empress EMS, the Rombout Fire Company, and the dedicated professionals at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall, his life was saved in what many are calling a true miracle.
During the Town Board meeting, emotional testimonials from healthcare team members, the homeowner, the 911 caller, and Assistant Chief Lucariello himself, filled the room with gratitude. Tears of joy and heartfelt appreciation marked an evening that none in attendance will soon forget.
In a profession defined by urgency and precision, moments like this affirm the deeper purpose behind our work. The recognition serves as a powerful reminder that skilled, compassionate care changes lives, not only for patients, but for families and communities as well.

WHEN EVERY BREATH MATTERS
Below is a testimonial written by Jean Mathurin documenting his experience at MSLC.
In 2024, I experienced something that truly shook me.
I was in the middle of performing at an event when I suddenly suffered an asthma attack. As someone who lives with asthma, I understand how serious it can be. In that moment, it was frightening. This isn’t something you can simply “push through.” When your breathing is compromised, nothing else matters.
I went straight to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall. From the moment I walked in, everything changed. There was no long wait, no confusion, and no feeling of being just another number.
The team moved quickly. They were calm, professional, and incredibly attentive. Within minutes, I was receiving treatment and placed on a nebulizer. Most importantly, I felt cared for. I felt safe. I knew I was in the right hands.
I’ll admit, I’m not someone who likes going to hospitals. But this experience completely changed my perspective. In a moment that could have become very serious, the staff at St. Luke’s showed up for me in a way I will never forget.
That day, I walked out of the hospital breathing normally again — grateful, relieved, and deeply thankful.
We are truly blessed to have a hospital like Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall right here in our Newburgh community. When it mattered most, they were there. For that, I will always be grateful.
MAKING SUCCESSFUL LIFE CHOICES PROGRAM
Addiction shaped much of Tiffany’s life from an early age. She lost her brother to a drug overdose in 2015, her father to alcohol-related complications months later, and her mother in 2017 under similar circumstances. Tiffany also battled addiction for years.
Her turning point came in 2024, when she was homeless, actively using, and caring for her twoyear-old son. Standing on a sidewalk in Utica, NY, Tiffany realized that without change, she risked losing the ability to care for her child.
Determined to rebuild her life and keep her son safe, Tiffany sought help and moved to Newburgh, NY, closer to family support. She and her son entered emergency housing, where she was connected to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall’s Making Successful Life Choices Program. Though initially guarded, Tiffany soon embraced the support she needed while navigating early recovery, single motherhood, and housing instability. She joined the Mothers in Recovery Support Group and later said the decision “saved my life.”
Through steady engagement in the program, Tiffany built a strong support system that helped her achieve sobriety and stability. Nearly three years later, she continues to choose recovery every day, motivated by her love for her children—especially her young son, who remains safely in her care. Today, Tiffany encourages other mothers in recovery and has reestablished meaningful relationships with her older children.
Because of Tiffany’s determination and the support of the MSLC Making Successful Life Choices staff, her story is one of resilience, recovery, and the power of keeping families together.

2025 was a year of growth within The Medical Group at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall. We are proud to have added the following providers, expanding our specialties and providing greater access to care that helps meet the health needs of our community.
HEMATOLOGY & MEDICAL ONCOLOGY Sandeep K. Malik, MD, is a highly skilled and compassionate physician specializing in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology. He earned his medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, one of the country’s most prestigious medical schools. Dr. Malik completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, where he honed his expertise in managing complex medical conditions across diverse patient populations. Dr. Malik further advanced his training with a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, gaining extensive experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of hematologic disorders and cancers. Dr. Malik joins The Medical Group at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall with leadership oversight of the Anemia Center, where he will focus on providing comprehensive, patient-centered care to individuals with chronic anemia, blood disorders, and cancer. He is committed to delivering the latest evidence-based treatments, utilizing innovative therapies, and coordinating care across multidisciplinary teams to optimize outcomes and enhance the patient experience.
Throughout his career, Dr. Malik has been recognized for his dedication to patient advocacy, education, and the highest standards of clinical excellence. His clinical interests include advanced anemia management, hematologic malignancies, solid tumor oncology, supportive care for cancer patients, and personalized treatment strategies.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Malik is passionate about mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals and contributing to ongoing research and quality improvement initiatives. He is known for his approachable, compassionate, and thorough approach, ensuring that each patient receives individualized care and support throughout their treatment journey.
Dr. Malik looks forward to advancing the mission of The Medical Group at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall by expanding access to high-quality hematology and oncology services, engaging the community around early and consistent screening, improving patient outcomes, and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation across the Anemia and Infusion Centers.
COLORECTAL & GENERAL SURGERY David Blumberg, MD, is a board-certified general and colorectal surgeon. He graduated from SUNY-Downstate Medical School in 1988. He completed a clinical research fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute in 1994 and his general surgery residency at Maimonides Medical Center in 1996. He spent the next two years in a clinical fellowship in general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and, in 1999, completed a colorectal surgery fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic. Dr. Blumberg was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) from 19992005 when he entered private practice remaining at UPMC until 2014. From 2014 to the present, he has been a system-wide Chief of Colorectal Surgery and a Director for a Rectal Cancer Program, Robotics Program and Enhanced Recovery Program after Surgery. Since 2016, Dr. Blumberg has been a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery rectal cancer committee which has reshaped the surgical standards for rectal cancer treatment in the United States today.

In January 2025, MSLC proudly launched The Joan Cusack McGuirk (JCM) Center for Patient Navigation.
This vital service connects patients with a dedicated team of nurses, care coordinators, and support staff who help guide individuals through every step of their healthcare journey. Navigators assist with appointment scheduling, follow-ups, and referrals to essential resources such as social services and financial assistance. The team also advocates for patient needs and partners closely with healthcare providers to develop personalized care plans. With expert guidance and comprehensive support, The JCM Center for Patient Navigation ensures that no one has to navigate their care alone.

CELEBRATING A NEW LOCATION
MSLC relocated its Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine to a newly renovated and expansive space on the Cornwall Campus. This new Center includes a third Hyperbaric Chamber and additional treatment rooms.
A MILESTONE BUILDING TOMORROW’S CLINICIANS
In June, MSLC proudly celebrated a major milestone—graduating its first class of residents at a special ceremony held at The Powelton Club. The evening brought together more than 100 guests, including current residents, family members, faculty, and staff, for a joyful and meaningful celebration of this historic achievement.
The celebration continued later in the month as we welcomed our newest class of residents with a special reception at Hurricane Grill & Wings. With five classes now in place, MSLC is proud to be training and supporting the next generation of medical professionals.
These milestones reflect years of vision, dedication, and collaboration. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Gina Del Savio, Dr. Sajid Mir, and the entire team who helped build this program from the ground up. Because of their leadership and commitment, MSLC continues to grow its impact in shaping future physicians and we are deeply grateful to all who have contributed to the success of this program.

On August 2, MSLC held its 28th Annual Birthday Celebration for the “graduates” of the Elaine Kaplan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Each year, our community joins together, supported by the generosity of The Kaplan Family Foundation and the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, to celebrate our babies… many of whom are now teenagers and adults… and the lives they are living because of the lifesaving care they received.
This year’s celebration welcomed nearly 200 guests, and featured a variety of familyfriendly activities, including games, crafts, princess visits, a photo booth, and much more… all filled with joy and gratitude.

The Foundation hosted its annual Golf and Tennis Event on June 16, 2025 at The Powelton Club, welcoming over 185 golfers and over 20 tennis players. Thanks to the generous support of sponsors and participants, the event raised net proceeds of nearly $130,000 to support areas of greatest need at MSLC.
OUTDOOR FUN!
ANNUAL GOLF & TENNIS EVENT
Participants enjoyed both morning and afternoon rounds of golf, along with on-course activities, raffle opportunities, and additional special features throughout the day. Celebrity guests added to the excitement by challenging golfers to see who could drive the ball farther. In the morning session, Wade Davis, three-time MLB All-Star and member of the Kansas City Royals 2015 World Series championship team, joined participants on the course. Afternoon golfers had the opportunity to compete against Rob Affuso, best known as the drummer for the rock band Skid Row.
The day concluded with a helicopter ball drop in the late afternoon, as a helicopter flew over the course and released 137 numbered golf balls onto the green. Raffle purchasers had the chance to win prizes of up to $2,500.

As we celebrated the 150th anniversary of Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall, we were fortunate to have the support and dedication of our 150th Council Members. This remarkable group of volunteers played an important role in helping make our anniversary year both meaningful and successful. In May 2025, we celebrated Nurses Week, including our 2nd Annual Nurses Night Out at Hurricane Grill & Wings which proudly welcomed more than 150 of our incredible nurses, staff, family, and friends. During the celebration, Donna Ramsey, RN was honored as MSLC’s 2025 Nurse of the Year.
A veteran nurse with 35 years of experience, Donna serves as a respected Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department and Trauma Center, where she has long been regarded as a leader, mentor, and tireless advocate for both patients and colleagues. Throughout her distinguished career, she has consistently gone above and beyond — providing compassionate care, clinical expertise, and unwavering support to those in need.
Donna’s dedication and commitment to nurturing the next generation of nurses makes her a true cornerstone of the MSLC Emergency Department, and we are proud to celebrate her contributions to our hospital and community.

• MSLC’S PALLIATIVE CARE NAVIGATOR – supports patients who have chronic or life-limiting illness by focusing on improving quality of life.
• MAKING SUCCESSFUL LIFE CHOICES PROGRAM, INCLUDING THE PATIENT SUPPORT NAVIGATOR – MSLC initiated program supporting current or soon-to-be mothers break the cycle of addiction.
• ONCOLOGY NAVIGATOR IN THE LITTMAN CANCER CENTER –guides oncology patients through their medical journey.

MSLC employees demonstrated extraordinary generosity during the 2025 Employee Giving Campaign, contributing more than $96,000 in support of patient care, programs, and services.
