It is a glorious day to wish you all Happy 40th Anniversary of Independence
As we gather to celebrate this significant milestone in the history of our beloved nation, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. While some may see this, comparatively, as just a brief span of four decades, with many more years to traverse, today, September 19th, 2023 reminds us of the remarkable journey we have undertaken as a nation and of the profound contributions our people have made, both here in St. Kitts and Nevis and in the United States of America, the adopted home of many of our citizens in the global diaspora.
We gather here with great pride as we celebrate this signal marker in our nation’s quest to be self-sufficient, self-sustaining, sovereign, and independent...40 long years ago. This momentous occasion is not merely a marker of time but a testament to the enduring spirit of our people and the remarkable journey we have undertaken together. Our theme for this celebration, "Growing Sustainably, Developing Maturely, Building Resiliency: Independence 40," encapsulates the essence of our nation's progress and our vision for the future.
The theme highlights three crucial aspects that will shape our future. "Growing Sustainably." This underscores the importance of responsible development that takes into account our environment, culture, and social fabric. We must continue to invest in sustainable practices that preserve our natural beauty, protect our ecosystems, and ensure that future generations inherit a vibrant and thriving nation.
"Developing Maturely" speaks to our nation's evolution as a responsible and accountable member of the global community. It is a reminder that our actions, both locally and internationally, must reflect wisdom, diplomacy, and a commitment to justice and fairness We aim to become a beacon of stability and wisdom in our region and beyond
"Building Resiliency" acknowledges the challenges we have faced and will continue to face, from natural disasters to global economic fluctuations and other external shocks. It emphasizes our need to be prepared, adaptive, and strong in the face of adversity. Through robust infrastructure, social safety nets, and a united spirit, we will emerge from any storm stronger than before.
We reflect on the past four decades over which we have been witnesses to noteworthy growth and development in our twin-island Federation We have transitioned from a colonial past to a sovereign nation, and our accomplishments along this journey stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of our people and to the unceasing blessings and mercies of the Almighty that have covered us and propelled us every step of the way. Our economy has seen substantial growth, our educational institutions have flourished, and our healthcare system has advanced to provide better services to our citizens. We recognize the advancements, we salute those national heroes and the ordinary man and woman across social strata, public and private sectors, grassroots organizations, individual and collective will, whose commitment, dedication, and can-do spirit overcame unspeakable odds, defied relentless challenges, and endured to today’s milestone anniversary
Yet, we recognize that there is still much work to be done. Let us never tire in welldoing, let us face forward with determination on the path of peace and progress. There are new horizons to be attained, new technologies to be mastered as we aim to make life easier for our people, new opportunities to forge in education, in security, in agriculture, in industry, in tourism, a new generation upon whom to impress that the future is theirs.
There is a role for all of us, working hand in hand. We are, together, always, better and more capable, stronger and more resilient when we understand that when all is said and done, we are one people in St. Kitts and Nevis.
I salute you all as Ambassador, and on behalf of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, I express my deepest appreciation to all of you, my fellow nationals, for your unwavering commitment to the land of our birth The journey of life often takes us to distant shores, seeking new opportunities and horizons.
