INDEPENDENCE DAY CONSHOHOCKEN STYLE FIREWORKS & A SOAP BOX DERBY RACE - BY JACK COLL
As a Bruce Springsteen fan I have trouble saying the word “Independence Day” without saying it twice. Springsteen’s song “Independence Day” is a rather sad song and has nothing to do with the thirteen colonies who had claimed their independence from England on July 4, 1776. On June 7, 1776 the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania State House (Later Independence Hall). On that date Richard Henry Lee of Virginia presented a resolution with the famous words: “Resolve: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” A month later on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was signed and this led to the formation of the United States. The original copy of the Declaration of Independence is housed in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and July 4 has been designated a national holiday to commemorate the day the United States laid down its claim to be a free and independent nation. So on this July 3, as all of Conshohocken enjoys the fireworks display held at Sutcliffe Park the true meaning of this wonderful event can be held close to our hearts with pride and patriotism.
