Program Notes

As our production’s dramaturgy packet says, “On the Town docked at Broadway’s Adelphi Theatre on December 28, 1944, near the end of WWII. It tells the story of three sailors on 24-hour shore leave, eager to experience all that the Big Apple has to offer, including a chance to discover love with the girls of their dreams!” It’s a show with a rich history and traditions around the way it’s usually interpreted and staged, whether that’s the most recent 2014 Broadway revival or in theaters around the country.

Looking at the show through a 2023 lens, however—decades after its inception— left a lot of room for new invention and opportunity to tell a story that Montclair students, and audiences, could connect with in new ways. I am so impressed with the students’ willingness to explore to create a new version—our version—of On the Town. On both sides of the proscenium, students were eager to dig deeper, play with theatricality, find new ways to interpret the text and the music, and build new moments together.

Whether you’ve seen multiple productions of On the Town or this is your first time, I hope you’ll leave inspired by the spark of connection, the joy, and the sense of play that radiate from the stage. We have had a wonderful time building this show, and we’re so excited to share it with you today.
