FISHING MONTAUK WITH CAPTAIN SKIP Happy New Year Everyone!! Hope everyone had a great Holiday Season. If 2026 turns out to be anything like the 2025 ishing season, we are in for more great ishing and fun times. Montauk still holds it's title as one of the premier ishing destinations of the world. Anglers from all over the planet come to Montauk to experience the great diversity of angling opportunities with numerous species. Lately Montauk has been the destination for the high end party crowd focusing on who has the most expensive drinks, has the loudest techno music, or who has the most expensive menu! They party all night, sleep till at least noon, then start all over again. News Flash!! You guys & gals are missing out on one of life's great experiences, going out getting fresh air, viewing marine mammals in their natural habitat, rather than on NatGeo wild, and most importantly catching your own fresh seafood dinner. Gone are the hundreds of people and family's that used to walk the docks every day to see the boats come in with their catches. Why? There are numerous reasons, but the entrepreneurs who have come to Montauk recently have focused on the high end Manhattan clientele, creating restaurants with exotic menu's and night clubs that play the music so loud you can't even talk. People used to come to Montauk for the fresh

Re inventing the wheel isn't always the best route to go. Throw in the traf ic, three night minimum for a room and ishing regulations all add to the situation. The new ishing regulations are not out yet, but there's rumor that stocks on certain species are up and the regulations will be Hippie John’s Monster Fluke adjusted. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT Dear EarthTalk: Why are Arctic rivers and streams turning orange? ~ Will Mortimer, Largo, FL Over the past decade, an increasing number of orange rivers and streams have been found in Arctic Alaska’s Brooks Range. These waters tend to be more acidic, turbid, and have higher concentrations of iron than their clearwater counterparts. As the Brooks Range is one of the least populated regions of North America, the typical cause of coloration of these water sources, namely excessive mining, is not probable. More broadly, these orange rivers and streams are part of the Arctic Network, a larger regional area containing 19.3 million acres of land. In 2018, the National Park Service received reports of one of the ,irst orange streams in the Brooks Range. By utilizing crowd-sourced observations from bush pilots, wilderness guides, other scientists, and rural and Indigenous communities, they found that over 75 streams had become orange in the Arctic Network. The ,indings of such an extensive number of orange rivers and streams led to growing research into the cause of the issue.
After extensive research using what scientists call the Redness Index, researchers determined that the coloration of the rivers and streams was caused by the thawing of permafrost, which is ground that has remained frozen for extended periods of time, due to global warming. As a result, water and oxygen are able to easily enter the soil, breaking down sul,ide-rich rocks to create excessive amounts of sulfuric acid that leaches naturally occurring metals into water sources. In particular, researchers found that oxidized iron was what turned the river streams, not unoxidized iron, nickel, zinc, cadmium or copper. The most obvious effect of orange streams and lakes is the lack of habitat for subsistence ,ish, such as Dolly Varden, chum salmon and white, ish. In addition, the change in color of these water sources also reduces the amount of light that reaches the bottom, lowering insect larvae numbers. As fewer ,ish and insects are available, there is an increased amount of stress placed on organisms directly above and below in food chains. Another potential impact of orange streams and lakes are the contamination of drinking sources in the surrounding areas, as there are

higher levels of dangerous chemicals. “There’s no ,ixing [permafrost melting] once it starts…It’s another irreversible shift driven by a warming planet,” reports Timothy Lyons, a biogeochemistry researcher at the University of California, Riverside. But ordinary people can help by changing small, everyday actions to protect the planet. From using more ecofriendly transportation options to conserving electricity, people can take on multiple approaches to reducing global warming to eliminate the root of the issue.

Dear EarthTalk: HIs it true that wild, ires are changing due to various man-made and natural factors and what can we do to adapt our control and prevention efforts? ~ Nick Maloney, via email
Wild, ires were once seasonal and somewhat predictable. Now they have shifted, and are more destructive, harder to contain and less predictable. Wild, ires have helped increase biodiversity and growth by clearing dead vegetation in ecosystems. But recent years, they’ve become more threatening to ecosystems and living beings—more intense, burning longer and affecting areas that previously rarely had wild, ires. This pattern change in wild, ires has been driven by a multitude many factors. Natural factors like wind patterns, climate variability and droughts have always in,luenced the development of wild, ires. But man-made factors, like climate change, deforestation and urban sprawl, are worsening the spread of wild, ires. The changes Continued on Page 22 The Montauk Sun ~ Winter 2026 ~ 7
Montauk Fire Department Corner Photos by Richard Lewin Professional Photography (soniboy@aol.com) Happy New Year to all. I trust everyone had a nice, safe Holi$ day season spent with family and friends. I imagine you are like me…always surprised at how fast the holidays are upon us then gone. It’s time to move on to the new happy and healthy New Year. The Montauk Fire Department started out the New Year as we al$ ways do, with the swearing in of the 2026 MFD Of icers. I am proud to serve again this year as the Chief of the Montauk Fire Department. We have a good year planned. We have new apparatus that we will put on$ line in the near future, several new candidates in training that will help us tremendously and some useful and innovative training. Surfing Montauk with Debra Rose Sprouting Waters The Sport of Kings, the birthplace of mod$ ern sur ing, epic crowds; if you have not yet surfed Wai$ kiki you know all about it. Literally translated in Hawaiian to ‘Sprouting Waters,” Waikiki may be a place you have to surf once in your life and never surf again. Surfers around the world will vent how “their spot” is now ‘way too crowded,’ and Waikiki is unique in that it has ALWAYS been crowded, so expectations are man$ aged. Oahu is also famous for the Seven Mile Miracle, the stretch of breaks that include Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Haleiwa, where you will ind sponsored surfers, profes$ sionals and surf legends making terrifying waves look welcoming. If you ind yourself on Oahu to surf it is worth visit$ ing both Waikiki and the North Shore, and traveling from one to the other will feel a bit like Route 27 in July. Build in time and expect dif iculty parking, and like many surf spots around the globe you will need to lock your car and not leave belongings on the beach. Waves will be magi$ cal, consistent and super fun. You will surf with locals and visitors that are so good they will dominate the waves, but there are plenty to go around. As for Waikiki, given the crowds, people were friendly for the most part. For such a tourist break, there were a fair number of locals, ‘aunties’ and ‘uncles,’ as the older Hawai$ ians were called. We wondered why locals would want to surf the most popular, lesson heavy, busiest break in all the Hawaiian Islands, and the answer was they were not willing to give it up to tourists. There is a section (Canoes) speci i$ cally for lessons, and the surrounding sections and breaks a mix of surfers and levels. Going early in the morning, off$ season, or around sunset will have slightly less people, but when the swell is weak it’s best to surf according to the tides. Waikiki is built$up more than ever; with every chain restaurant you can imagine. You will ind fantastic tasting menus in smaller restaurants like NaTure and Mugen, and if you venture off the main strip of town, you will ind a little more authenticity. Like everywhere else Hawaii is continu$ ing to change, but you will still ind world class surf, beauti$ ful sunsets and the Aloha spirit. Happy Sur ing!

As always it was a fantastic event with great food, drink, music, dancing and good old Montauk camaraderie. There were 500 dinners served or delivered to our Montauk Senior Citizens. I’d like to thank the Lions Club for their continued partnership, head chef Joanie Franzone and her committee and the men and women of the Department for making this event such a success. While still on Christmas theme, I’d like to thank all the generous people of Montauk for donating to our Toys for Tots drive this year. It’s my understanding that we broke records this year in the number of new toys donated so that more of our local kids would have something under the tree. Thanks to ire ighter Denis O’Reilly for heading this committee so successfully every year. Company No.6 assisted the East Hampton Town Police Department with traf ic control in this year’s annual Thanksgiving Day Tur$ key Trot Run For Fun. Over 1,500 runners braved the cold wind and ran around the lake. Well done. Happy New Year ~ Peter Joyce, Jr., Chief, Montauk Fire Department https://www.montauk iredistrict.org/

THE 64TH GRAND MARSHAL OF MONTAUK’S ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE…TOMMY GRENCI by Sue Giustino Life+long resident Thomas Grenci Jr. has been chosen by the Montauk Friends of Erin as the 2026 Montauk Grand Marshal. He will march along with the group and the Amity+ ville Highland Pipe Band in the NYC Parade, as well as lead the Mon tauk St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 29, 2026. “I knew and know most of the former Grand Marshals and I’m very proud to be among those great people.” ~Tom Grenci Son of Thomas and Romona Grenci, Tommy grew up in the state park house at Montauk Point [1962+ 1987]. His parents lived there for 33 years [1958+1990] during his dad’s long tenure as a NY State Police Of icer for Hither Hills and Montauk Point State Parks, as well Assistant Park Manager. Tommy grew up at the point with his sister Christina and told me that it wasn’t as re+ mote as one would think. He remembers taking his bike to the Camp Hero Air Force Base+ “It was a whole little community,” he said. “My mom shopped at the ‘base ex+ change’ store, we rode our bikes and played on the
grounds, and used the bowling alley and movie theater with the kids who lived at the base.” Tommy went to the Montauk Public School – class of 1977+ during which time he joined the Cub Scouts where Joan Lycke was his den mother, and the Boy Scouts, enjoying time with his dad the Scoutmaster. After graduating from East Hampton HS+ class of 1981, he attended Suffolk Community College for a while, joined the Montauk Fire Department climbing the ranks to the position of chief [1981+present], becoming a Traf ic Control Of icer in ’82, and in ’83 entered the Suffolk County Police Academy into the 85th recruit class. Following in his dad’s footsteps, Tom Grenci Jr. served the East Hampton Police Dept. from 1982 until retiring as a Lieutenant in 2015. From 1985 until June of 1988 when he was appointed EH Town Police permanent Police Of icer, he worked as a part+ time N.Y. State Park police of icer, EH Town Police dispatcher, and police garage me+ chanic. As a member of the force, Tommy routinely sought to better himself as an of icer by attending numerous seminars, and specialized trainings+ such as the FBI National Academy for 11 weeks in 2006. Along with 250 other active police of icers from all over the country and world, he was selected to par+ ticipate and receive FBI advanced training at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. In 1999 of icer Grenci was promoted to Detective, Sergeant in 2004, and served as the East Hampton Precinct commander from 2005+2010 when he was promoted to Lieutenant. Tommy Grenci Jr concluded his outstanding career in 2015 as Montauk Precinct Commander: retiring with a record rich with letters of gratitude, commendations and awards. His service included being named 1992 Co+Police Of icer of the Year for his role—alongside Wesley Payne—in rescuing two hostages and cap+ turing ive armed suspects following a robbery. Tommy met his wife Lisa in November of 1988, was engaged in 1990, and married in September of 1991. About Tommy’s appointment as Grand Marshal, Lisa commented, “I'm extremely proud of my husband and want to thank the Montauk Friends of Erin for bestowing him this honor. Tom not only gives 100% to me and our family, but to the Montauk community he dearly loves, as well. We are so thrilled and can't wait to celebrate with everyone.” Tom and Lisa have three children+ Thea Grenci, Eva Grenci and Thomas Grenci III. It’s obvious to anyone who knows them that the Grenci’s are extremely proud of and close to their children. And from their comments, the feeling is mutual... “What a great honor, dad is Montauk's 64th Grand Marshal! We as a family are so proud of you dad. Your dedication and commitment to the Montauk community is unmatched. You always served the people of this town with compassion, empa thy and most of all kindness. You have been my role model since I was a little girl. I can’t wait to stand by your side on your special day to celebrate you! I love you!” Thea “My father, Tom Grenci, has dedicated his life to serving the Montauk community—as a retired police of icer, former Fire Chief, Lions Club member, and, above all, a devoted, Continued on Page 21

A Hubble Space telescope image of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. Hubble photographed the comet on July 21 2025, when the comet was 365 million kilometers from Earth. Hubble shows that the comet has a teardrop-shaped cocoon of dust coming off its solid, icy nucleus. Because Hubble was tracking the comet moving along a hyperbolic trajectory, the stationary background stars are streaked in the exposure.
“COMETS AND INTERSTELLAR VISITORS: EXPLORING THE DYNAMIC SKY” (A FREE, VIRTUAL LECTURE) THURSDAY, JANUARY 22ND, 7:00 8:00pm CO HOST: Suffolk County Community College SPEAKER: Dr. Ariel Graykowski REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED: https://bit.ly/DynamicSkyTalk
From icy visitors from the outer solar system to rare interstellar interlopers like 3I/ATLAS, comets are among the most dynamic and mysterious objects we can observe. In this talk, Dr. Ariel Graykowski will share how citizen astronomers around the world are helping track and characterize these evolving worlds using the UNISTELLAR network of smart telescopes. She’ll discuss what makes 3I/ATLAS unique among interstellar objects, what its discovery can teach us about our cosmic neighborhood, and how the collaboration between professionals and citizen scientists is expanding the frontiers of small body research. Dr. Ariel Graykowski is a research scientist at the SETI Institute, where she leads the Unistellar Citizen
Science Comet Program. She studies the evolving activity of comets, asteroids, and interstellar visitors using a global network of telescopes operated by citizen astronomers, working to bridge professional and public astronomy in the exploration of our solar system and beyond. Dr. Dr. Ariel Graykowski Graykowski received her PhD in geophysics and space physics from UCLA. Hamptons Observatory extends its deepest thanks to Dr. Graykowski for generously taking the time to share her expertise and to co host Suffolk County Community College for their kind collaboration. This Month Animals of the Month CUDDLES: Cuddles, known around ARF as our very own ‘Phantom’, is a year and a half old and ready to leave shelter life behind. She arrived through the Operation Cat program with her ve siblings as a kitten, and we hope she does not spend another season growing up here. Shy at rst, she soon reveals a gentle,
playful side and loves nothing more than curling up under her blanket. Her striking “Phantom of the Opera” markings make her unforgettable, but it is her quiet sweetness that truly captures hearts. Cuddles would thrive in a calm home where she can explore at her own pace. Like the Phantom himself, she is a tender, lonely soul simply longing for understanding and a place to belong. POE: Poe is a ten-monthold bundle of joy who looks like a charming mix between a greyhound and a kangaroo. This lovable little rascal was found running at large in Louisiana, living his best “catch me if you can” lifestyle before realizing he’d rather have a cozy couch and a family
to call his own. Poe is the perfect blend of goofy energy and sweet affection. One minute he’s zooming around like he’s powered by pure sugar, and the next he’s curled up in your lap, soaking up all the love he can get. If you want a dog who will make you laugh every single day, keep life fun, and adore you with his whole silly heart, Poe is your guy. For more information contact adoptions@arfhamptons.org or call 631-537-0400 x203. ALL ARF ANIMALS ARE VET CHECKED, SPAYED/NEUTERED, MICROCHIPPED AND UP TO DATE ON ALL VACCINES. Brain Waves with Debra Rose Change If this sounds like an excuse to drop your New Years Resolutions, you are partially right. At a New Years Eve dinner this year guests were pressed to share their resolutions, prompting a slew of sar castic, witty, serious and baf led responses. Many felt com pelled to have SOMETHING, and no one wanted to be held accountable for sticking to their resolutions. Why then do we feel the date calendar will facilitate behavior change? And if we fail it must be that we are weak, lazy or quitters. Lasting change takes time. The irst step is knowing what needs to change, or ‘shift’ in our lives. The New Year is a nice time to reassess, if post holiday gluttony, spending and exhaustion prompts re lection. To form new neural pathways and rewire our habits, we must work through the resistance humans have to change ingrained ways of behaving. Commitment, pa tience, overcoming challenges and consistent effort does not start on January 1st and it is not sustainable. It takes about seventy days for a new habit to form, depending on how complex it is, and it’s not based on a single declaration to ‘change.’ Our brains are built to help us survive, we prefer the safety of the familiar and the routine, so something new feels ‘foreign’ even if it’s better for us. For change that lasts, there is an emotional shift that must happen, and taking on the role of this new version of ourselves should not be underestimated. The New Year is an excellent time to check in, review or create goals, and not label anything as ‘failures’ if behaviors do not automatically lip. Most resolutions are vague, unrealistic, too abrupt or overwhelming, and the motivation to change gets lost in feeling pressure to stick to them. The key is picking a few small habits to change that are speci ic and to consistently aim for adjusting. One small change will lead to other pos itive changes in your habits, and setbacks are a normal part of the process. Anything we have learned as humans did not happen because a date dictated that change. It happens after many attempts, failures and wins. The idea of what you want to change must include the person you will be, I am a runner is more powerful than I will run more. Make sure your goals are fun and not punishing, and that your efforts will last all year long, where you can re lect on your progress next year. Happy New Year! 16 ~ Winter 2026 ~ The Montauk Sun

A JOURNEY THROUGH BOOKS... with Sue Giustino
Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead Spanning Prohibition era Montana, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, New Zealand, wartime London, and modern day Los Angeles, Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead is an epic historical novel that interweaves the narratives o) two ambitious women on parallel journeys across di))erent eras. A)ter being rescued as in)ants )rom a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian Graves and her brother Jamie are raised by their artistic yet somewhat detached uncle in Missoula, Montana. Determined to achieve her long time childhood dream, Marian fights through numerous obstacles to become a 20th century )emale aviator. Navigating a career un)riendly to women, she finds hersel) entangled with a shady character willing to help her—but at a cost )ar greater than she anticipated. Taking any work available, she per)orms as a daredevil pilot, lands private transportation jobs, and eventually attempts to circumnavigate the globe. The second narrative which develops alongside that o) Marian’s, introduces Hadley Baxter, a 21st century Hollywood actress. A)ter a disastrous ending to her success)ul role in a series o) movies, Hadley is cast to play Marian in a film )ocusing on the aviator’s disappearance near Antarctica. Finding parallels in Marian's li)e including also being an orphan Hadley grapples with her own )ame and identity while immersing hersel) into the character o) Marian. Their un)orgettable stories power)ully un)old as Shipstead skill)ully interweaves the characters’ similarities and determination to overcome societal and emotional barriers in vastly di))erent times and places. Through the intertwined narratives o) these two women, Maggie Shipstead’s work explores universal themes o) )reedom, ambition, and societal expectations. Although Great Circle is not based on a true story, it is inspired by historical events and figures in aviation. While reading it, I realized that some o) the women aviators mentioned in connection to Marian’s li)e were also part o) the non fiction book Spitfires by Becky Aikman. Aikman tells the little known story o) daring American women pilots who )erried combat aircra)t )or Britain during o) WWII when the U.S. military wouldn't accept )emale pilots. It was an interesting link. I highly recommend the book Spitfires as an entertaining and in)ormative read )or anyone with an interest in the subject. For more in)ormation on Great Circle or Maggie Shipstead go to: https://www.maggieshipstead.com/

New Year’s Resolution… Better Health by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel It’s been many years since I even made a New Year’s res; olution because I never seem to get passed the first month and my plans Ball to the way; side. Whether it was to tackle a long overdue house project, to read some books I have been waiting to sit and enjoy, or to take a day trip we have been putting oBB, the plans oBten get ignored. But when it comes to resolutions about health and taking care oB our well being, that’s another story that should be addressed. According to the American Heart Association (AHA) they suggest to begin with small changes and measurable goals when it comes to eating healthier and reducing calories. Here are some tips Brom them on how to get started on a path to better health in the New Year 2026! We should make a resolu; tion “to sit less, move more, sleep more and be mindBul about what we eat.” Start with picking a Bew healthy new behaviors like eating more servings oB Bruits and vege; tables and including them in Boods you already like. IB or; dering pizza, add some Bresh sautéed spinach leaves or green peppers Bor your topping. We always try to make a salad to go with our pizza or at least some raw broccoli, carrots or celery sticks on the side with a light dressing or dip. When it comes to eating a large quantity oB Bruit, do be aware that Bruit can have a tremendous amount oB sugar/Bructose in them, as well as in those Bruit shakes we Beel are healthy drinks. Try to avoid over processed Boods high in sugar and flour, as this will only make you hungrier. Stick to real Boods and usually the more color the better.” See iB you can keep a Bood log diary Bor a week to see what and when you eat. Get Better Sleep…Catching more sleep is another key to unlocking a healthier you, according to the AHA. The amount and quality oB sleep can influence your eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more. The

“that we have seen in many places in the world [are] caused by the interaction be; tween human;caused climate change and the history oB land management leading to more abundant and more connected Buels,” according to Amy Hessl, a geogra; phy proBessor and paleoclimatologist at West Virginia University. Furthermore, Corey Hogan, Canada’s Parliamentary Sec; retary to the Minister oB Energy and Nat; ural Resources, has asserted that “increasingly fires are an all;year event…” Also, the change in wildfires has been massive. In Spain, some 382,000 hectares have burned this year alone. This number is the highest in records starting Brom 2006. The 2025 Palisades fires were the costliest natural disaster in the first halB oB the year. The consequences Bor human health have also grown. A study Bunded by the European Commission, and others as; serts that the mortality rate Brom short; term wildfire smoke exposure has been underestimated by 93 percent. Many traditional mitigation strategies, like land management through controlled burns, community prepared; ness and education, and fire suppression, have been used to control and prevent wildfires. As wildfires become more chal; lenging to mitigate, technology like satel; lite monitoring and early detection 22 ~ Winter 2026 ~ The Montauk Sun
American Heart Association says about seven to nine hours a night Bor most healthy adults is necessary Bor a healthy metabolism, optimal brain Bunction and quality oB liBe. Without enough sleep, long;term problems can in; clude weight gain and chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. I know Bor myselB, six to seven hours seems to be plenty oB sleep Bor me, but it has to be in a room with total darkness. For people that need their phones or tablets close by, the light they emit can cause one to not have a total deep sleep. I find even a bright digital close by the bedside is a bit annoying and I turn it to Bace the other direction. Some people like a cer; tain bedtime routine to help them relax Bor a good night’s sleep. Maybe it is a hot bath, soBt music, yoga or medita; tion, or a Bew minutes oB easy stretches. Commit To Moving More…Physical activity burns calo; ries, helps you lose weight and contributes to your overall health. However, iB you haven’t been active the previous year, do start slowly into an exercise routine. Set measur; able weekly and monthly goals that are realistic. Don’t start oBB trying to run a marathon in a Bew months iB you never even walked a Bew laps around your local track! An easy start is walking 30 minutes a day Bor a Bew weeks, then set your sights Bor longer sessions and picking up speed. But even casual walking is better than no walking at all. Invite a Briend to join you and you’ll see chatting and walking makes the time go Baster and is more interesting. Frequently I walk with a Bew lady Briends around our local track that has benches all around it. ABter a Bew laps we’ll sit and rest, chat a bit and then start again. This works Bor us and it is nice meeting up and being united in the same goal oB walking more. As most oB us know, cardiovascular disease risk increases with too much sedentary time, so adults should strive Bor at least 150 minutes oB moderate physical activity a week, or at least 75 minutes oB vigorous activity. Try to work in some muscle;strengthening activ; ities, too. Aim to boost physical activity through an exer; cise class, brisk walks, vigorous yard work or even dancing. The activity doesn't have to be continuous. Ex; ercise sessions or other types oB physical activity can be broken into small segments throughout the week. Check out your local gym and find out what types oB classes they have Bor your age group. For older people there is what is called Silver Sneakers that have classes specifically tai; lored Bor senior citizens. Also, some health insurance
systems has come into play. Fire strategies must be adapted based on Buture predic; tions, Borest management must be im; proved, fire Borecasting must consider climate predictions, policies have to be strengthened, and action should be co; ordinated. Citizens can play a role in mitigating the risks oB these changing wildfires. By educating ourselves on the nature oB wild; fires, we can enhance our preparedness. We must also support wildfire technology networks, as their advancement would be pivotal in our progress. Groups like the American Red Cross, the Natural Conser; vancy, and Direct RelieB all aid in providing wildfire relieB and awareness.

A Rose by any other name… by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel
Pale 1ingers press her face against the rigid pane. Her dreams sift through frigid lace and options, identity wain.
This quote is surely familiar for those of us that read Romeo and Juliet in high school English class and recognize the full sentence as “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” There is something magical about a story, poem, 1ilm that lives on years after it is produced and people recog5 nize quotes or famous characters’ names long after reading or viewing the 1ilm. Speaking of names, in the world of entertainment there are people that have gained fame and only go by one name. On the other hand, some entertainers have “handles” that were given by them perhaps by a critic, fan or even someone in their own entourage. The name seems to stick and when columnists mention the artist often the nickname takes precedence over the en5 tertainer’s real name. See how many one5word celebrity name or nickname you can recognize by the clues below.
Shivering breathes fog the view. Here and now, near and soon fading silhouettes against glass, demur to the static moving past.

ESCAPE FROM PARADISE with Ingrid Lemme Chalut
Life, Love & Golf in the West Virginia Mountains Glade Springs, West Virginia — A Place That Became Part of My Heart A Different Kind of Departure…A cruise usually begins with the first sight o6 the ship: a white hull gleaming under the Florida sun, gulls circling overhead, and the quiet thrill o6 knowing that 6or one week, the ocean will be home. Ours began di66erently. The day be6ore boarding Holland America Line’s ms Koningsdam—be6ore sail1away cocktails and smiling embarkation photos—we checked into The Harrison, a “Park, Sleep & Fly” hotel in Hollywood, Florida. That evening we dined just steps away at Hoshi and Sushi o6 Hollywood. Their Crispy Brussels Sprouts alone were worth staying next door. When the Journey Takes a Turn…The next morning, a6ter a quick break6ast, we rolled our luggage downstairs and ordered an Uber to Port Everglades. A mid1sized car arrived, the trunk popped open, and our driver greeted us warmly—though it quickly became clear he didn’t speak a word o6 English. That didn’t seem like a problem. We had one destination. Except the car headed—confidently—toward Fort Lauderdale Airport. We pointed at his GPS. We tapped the glowing blue dot labeled Port Everglades. We mimed ships and waved our arms theatrically. A6ter several reroutes and 6ar more gesturing than one expects on an Uber ride, he finally de1 livered us to the Holland America terminal. Bags dropped. Boarding documents scanned. We exhaled.

The Phone That Almost Missed the Ship…Then came the real plot twist. Hal6way up the escalator, I reached 6or my iPhone and 6elt—nothing. That cold shock every traveler knows washed over me. My phone was still in the Uber. In those 6rantic moments, we imagined the worst: a driver unable to understand us, already disappearing into tra6fic. Don’t ask how we communicated—but travel has a way o6 surprising you. Twenty minutes later, he re1 turned, holding my phone out the car window with a smile. Forgiveness was instant—and generously re1 warded. Christmas at Sea…Shortly therea6ter, we stepped into the gleaming atrium o6 the ms Koningsdam—polished brass, so6t lighting, and the hum o6 embarkation energy. Every cruise has a tone. This one 6elt 6estive, elegant, and joy6ul: Christmas at sea. Our Vista stateroom was crisp and welcoming, bal1 cony doors opening onto the glint o6 Fort Lauderdale’s channel. The 6ollowing morning, we were already anchored at Hal6 Moon Cay. We loved Holland America’s private is1 land—wide sugar1sand beaches, turquoise water, rustic barbecues, and roosters and chickens wandering 6reely, as i6 they owned the place (which, o6 course, they do). The Rhythm of Sea Days…Sea days became the rhythm o6 our week. Mornings began with tea delivered by Jang, a member o6 the room1service sta66 whose attentiveness defines the Holland America spirit. He not only remem1 bered our orders, but our pre6erences 6rom previous voy1 ages on other ships where he had served. It comes as no surprise that Holland America Line has once again received Cruise Critic’s award 6or “Best Service” (Ocean Category), be1 coming the first cruise line to win the honor 6our years in a row. rienced, it would be no stretch to imagine Assistant Maître d’ Andri among those who helped make that accolade possible. Christmas Eve dinner in the main dining room shimmered. Holiday décor, clinking glasses, and guests dressed in red and green filled the space. Our waiters, Dony and his assistant Adik1 erta, turned service into art, presenting a new napkin creation each evening—swans and intricate origami wonders. Executive Che6 Mahendran “Mahi” Sathupathy made his rounds, hand1 some as his cuisine, and was met with spontaneous applause. Culture, Color, and Caribbean Flavor…Christmas Day Eve brought us to the Dominican Republic. Amber Cove opened into a landscape o6 mountains and music, and 6rom there we trav1 eled inland to El Cupey. At Las Catalinas Ranch, we were welcomed with rum punch, warm smiles, and the promise o6 learning to cook san cocho, the national dish. Folkloric dancers soon filled the floor in vibrant costumes, teaching us merengue steps we attempted with varying degrees o6 grace. Our guide, Elvis—fluent in several languages, an excellent dancer, and endlessly entertaining—shared the history o6 his country with pride. We continued on to Puerto Plata, where San Felipe Fortress stood stoic against time and Plaza Independencia buzzed with color and rhythm. MONTAUK LIBRARY GINGERBREAD WINNERS by Evelyn J. Mocbeichel
The Friends of the Montauk Library announced the winners of their First Annual Gingerbread Creation Contest. This year’s theme was The Buildings in Montauk. Ad vertising for the contest started as early as the beginning of October with lyers at the library, around town and even online at The Patch. In the past the Library has held other contests such as a fruitcake contest during Thanksgiving, Irish Soda Bread around St. Patrick’s Day and even a red, white and blue theme of something edible for Flag Day.
Sally Krusch of The Friends of the Library said the Gingerbread Contest was a family event and submissions were brought to the library by creative entrants of all ages. First Place winner was The Radar Tower created by the Lenahan family. Second Place winner was The Ronjo Motel created by Dan Elliott. The other entries were the Karl Fisher Tower, the Viking Building (with shark) and the Montauk Teardown. The classic ginger bread house was also entered, but did not ful ill the criteria. The Houses will be on display at the Library through January. Stop by and be in spired to join the fun next year for other events! To learn more about other contests coming up and the wonderful, varied activities the Montauk Library hosts year round, be sure to check their website frequently. www.montauklibrary.org

Continued from Page 25 past like sequins. Instead, swells rocked the vessel with theatrical enthusiasm. Within minutes, several passengers, myself included, felt unmistakably queasy. We surfaced early, and later learned subsequent tours had been canceled. One of the comforts of cruising is always returning home to the ship. Christmas, Quietly…Christmas morning unfolded slowly. Marcus attended the late night staff concert and Christmas Mass while I slept, returning with pho tos and stories. Santa handed out gifts in the theater for the little ones, but we chose the Greenhouse Spa— a peaceful retreat where the only sounds were water and whispers. Outside, the ship sailed through endless blue.
Evenings became chap ters of their own: Exqui site Mediterranean sea bass at Canaletto by Chef de Cuisine Kalai and his team; music drifting from lounges; piano notes curling like ribbon; jazz giving way to a holiday party where guests dressed in bright orange celebrated Holland America’s Dutch heritage.

Arriving by Sea in Key West…By week’s end, the ms Koningsdam pointed back toward Florida—and inally, Key West. It was our irst time arriving by ship, stepping ashore down the gangway with the island waiting just beyond the pier. With no tour booked and no agenda, we wandered. Duval Street buzzed. Cuban coffee scented the air. Roosters, chickens, and baby chicks ruled the sidewalks. Pastel conch homes felt both familiar and newly no ticed. And then there was Louie’s Backyard—our all time favorite restaurant whenever we return. A place where meals become memories. Full Circle…Disembarkation morning arrived clear and ef icient. We ordered an Uber back to the hotel where our car awaited. A new driver— luent in English, cheerful, con ident. We relaxed…until we recognized the route. Again, the airport. Two drivers. Two detours. One phone heroically recovered. Travel, it seems, wanted symmetry— a beginning and an ending linked by the same unexpected punchline. Just then, a seaplane lifted off the runway in front of us. A wrong turn— but a spectacular sight. The Beauty of Going Sideways…And maybe this is the heart of travel: perfection doesn’t live in lawless execution, but in the small mishaps that color a journey and become stories retold for years. Until next month, from another interesting location. Springs Historical Society and Community Library presents BARRY McCALLION: ARTIST BOOKS an exhibition of literary artworks through Sunday, January 18 SPRINGS COMMUNITY LIBRARY 1 Parsons Place, East Hampton Curated by Teri Kennedy VIEWING HOURS with the ARTIST January 12, 13 & 15 / 10am , noon January 16 / 10am , noon & 1 , 3pm January 17 / 10am , 3pm January 18 / 1 , 3pm Known for his ability to bring lit, erary narratives to life, Barry McCallion combines ine art with written works to create a deeply immersive and at times introspective experience. Blending whimsy with absolute precision, McCal, lion uses a wide range of mediums and collages to deepen the emotional impact
of each piece. McCallion describes how “the visual book involves you in time” to create a sense of anticipation and mem, ory. His creative process driven by themes of social consciousness, McCal, lion addresses issues such as extinction, pollution, and environmental protection. In one such book, he tells the story of Earth’s fragility on rare Japanese nacre pearl paper, a material crafted in a method that is increasingly threatened by a rapidly changing world. Also on display will be McCallion’s prints and fold, out style books, both cur, rent and past works. McCallion will be present during the exhibition to talk about his process and inspirations.
About the Artist: Barry McCallion is a sculptor and artist who began his cre, ative journey in the Bronx, NY. He holds degrees in English Literature from Co, lumbia University and Sculpture from Claremont Graduate University. His work has been shaped by extensive travel and artistic residencies in Berlin, Paris, New Zealand, and Australia. A long time Springs resident, McCallion currently re, sides at Peconic Landing.
