Mike Petrino likely dreamed about this day, the one when he walks to center court on the opening day of prac ce, his first as a collegiate head coach, calls for his players to circle around him and then sets the tone for the two-plus hours ahead with some words about playing hard, smart and together.

That dream will be realized when the Lady Griz hold their first official prac ce of the upcoming season on Thursday a ernoon, with Petrino in the posi on of head coach.

Whatever the other details of that dream were, it’s unlikely they reflected the reality of what has taken place in 2020. Or, in other words, how he got here or what he’s had to deal with ever since.

Petrino, an assistant coach the last four years, was elevated to the interim headcoach posi on in early April, at a tense me in Lady Griz history, when the long-stable program was anything but.

Before that month was out, with the help of his staff, Zoom calls and virtual walking tours of campus, he had helped stabilize the roster with commitments from three upperclassman transfers, including the first two interna onal players on scholarship in program history.

But that also pped the balance in a less-than-favorable direc on for any coach, much less one in his first year, who could only gather his team together electronically those first few months, from Missouri to Tasmania, 15 squares on a computer screen, pixels who would become teammates.

The Senior

' B With all the movement of players, both in and out, Petrino’s first roster would have more newcomers (eight) than returners (seven). And of the seven returners, three did not play last season.

When that team, together in spirit if not always in actual bodies due to quaran ning and other safety measures, began preseason prac ces in August, li le was known about the season ahead, other than winter, which tradi onally means basketball games being played, was approaching.

Now it’s mid-October and Montana s ll does not know when its first game will be or against whom or where it will be played. Yet here we are.

“Every day has been an adventure. I used to think coaching was day-to-day. Now it feels like it’s hour-to-hour,” Petrino says.

“I keep reminding myself every day that we need to plan, prepare and pivot. Plan things out, prepare for anything and pivot when needed to keep moving forward.”

Petrino does not have a player on his team who has earned any level of Big Sky Conference postseason accolade in her career, not even honorable men on all-league, but that does not mean he is without experience or talent.

Forward Madi Schoening, the team’s lone senior, a fi h-year player, is back. She started 61 games her first two years but just 15 the last two because of various injuries.

Redshirt junior forward Abby Anderson returns. A er totaling 52 points on 27.1 percent shoo ng in 2018-19, Anderson averaged 9.0 points on 44.3 percent shoo ng last season and ranked third in the Big Sky with 65 blocked shots.

The team’s third returning starter is redshirt junior guard Sophia S les, who was hindered last season, par cularly offensively, by a bum shoulder, an issue that has since been remedied.

The challenge for Petrino is that those three players, plus junior forward Kylie Frohlich, the only other Lady Griz on the current team who saw ac on last season, are ready for advanced educa on, Basket-

The issue becomes the eight newcomers, five of whom are freshmen. This is all new to them. Prac ces have needed to reflect that.

“How do we do something for Madi, who has played in 86 games, and help those kids who have never played in a college game before?” asks Petrino. “And how do we make it effec ve to incorporate our junior-college kids, who have some game experience but in a different program?

“It emphasizes for me to keep things simple while at the same me challenging them to grow. Every teaching opportunity is huge.”

In between those two groups are redshirt sophomores Carmen Gfeller, a forward, and Jordyn Schweyen, a guard. Both played out of necessity two seasons ago as true freshmen before redshir ng last winter.

Redshirt freshman Shelby Schweyen also sat out last season a er suffering a preseason injury.

Of the three transfers, the only one with Division I experience is Lauren Mills, who played in just 13 games at Iowa State over the last two seasons. Instead her experience came by prac cing every day in a top-25 program.

The 6-foot-2 junior center from Hobart, Tasmania, had two victories in the offseason. First, she was cleared by the NCAA to begin playing immediately. Second, she was awarded an extra season of eligibility, meaning she has two years to play as a Lady Griz.

The other two transfers came from junior colleges. Junior guard Nyah Morris-Nelson, from Gold Coast, Australia, played last season at Iowa Western Community College.

Junior forward Hannah Thurmon, from Dexter, Mo., played at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

The Sophomores Both were added for more than their 3-point shoo ng, but their long-range marksmanship certainly made them par cularly appealing for a program looking for an upgrade in that department.

Thurmon went 72 for 180 (.400) from the arc last season, a total surpassed only once in Lady Griz history: McCalle Feller’s 75 makes in 2015-16. Morris-Nelson went 43 for 108 (.398) last year.

“Nyah and Hannah come in with actual game experience a er high school,” said Petrino. “Lauren may not have the same minutes, but she has the experience of praccing against a top-25 team. That’s valuable experience too.”

Thurmon was on teams that went 53-10 during her two seasons at Three Rivers.

“I felt like I was at home at my last school and that’s how I feel here,” says Thurmon.

“But I think it’s more enjoyable. It’s a lot more compe ve, and I like that.

“You’re playing with girls who all know how to play. That makes it a lot more fun.”

Of the five freshmen, four have deep es to the state. Guard Kyndall Keller was the Gatorade Montana Player of the Year last season at Havre High. Forwards Willa Albrecht is from Billings and played at West High, Class AA co-champions last year, Karsen Murphy is from Glendive.

Guard Joelnell Momberg led Box Elder to Class C state tles as a sophomore and junior. She played her final season at Mead High in Spokane, where she was first-team All-Greater Spokane League in one of the be er conferences for girls’ basketball in the

' B Northwest.

The out-of-stater is guard Bria Dixson, who is from Portland and a graduate of Benson Polytechnic High.

That’s a lot of newcomers but Montana has a lot of needs. The Lady Griz return more than 45 percent of their producon from last season in just one sta s cal category: blocked shots, courtesy of Anderson.

Of the team’s top six scorers last season, five are gone, three by gradua on, two by transfer.

Opportuni es abound.

“It doesn’t ma er how much experience you have, produc on is produc on,” says Petrino.

“It has no bias toward age. If you produce in a way that’s going to help the team be as successful as possible, age isn’t a requirement.”

Very li le about the buildup to this point has been ideal, from players being off campus un l August to prac ces not always including all 15 players to not even having an opponent, a date, to use as a down-theroad mile marker.

But the games will come. Un l then, Montana will keep prac cing with an eye on March, whatever that’s going to look like.

“The good news is, if we stay healthy, we haven’t peaked yet,” Petrino jokes. “Our chemistry on and off the floor needs to be there. That’s the x-factor.

That’s why teams underachieve or overachieve.

“But the upside is there.

The main thing we need to do is get consistent reps with each other. We s ll have an iden ty to create.”

As for the program, “The House That Rob Built,” its identy was created over the last

four decades. In a purely spor ng sense, it’s about one thing: winning championships, which the Lady Griz have not done since the 2014-15 season.

This team’s iden ty? In the preseason, with nothing else to go by, it was about music, or the high-energy tunes that are blasted during warmups each day. It gives the players an added hop in their step that they then take into the more serious tasks ahead.

Yet to be played, as far as I can tell, is “The Bones” by Maren Morris. I’ve purposely avoided looking up a picture of Morris.

I want to see S les when that song comes on. I need to see S les. And her teammates, holding up a trophy in Boise in March. The world: shocked.

The winds and rains have come for “The House That Rob Built.” We all want to believe it’s as strong as it ever was. And that’s a heavy burden to take on by a first-year coach with more new faces than familiar ones on his team. We just want to believe.

The house don’t fall when the bones are good “It’s been be er,” S les said this week.

“Maybe even be er than expected. Everyone is so excited to be here every day. The energy is higher than it’s been in years past.”

But what will that mean come game me? How will that in-prac ce energy in mid-October translate in a league that is crea ng more compe ve programs by the season, who want to create their own Montana?

We built this right, so nothing’s ever gonna move it With all the changes in the program since March, only me will tell if it will be the upcoming season’s fi ng anthem.

' B The coronavirus pandemic has taught me:

Basketball-wise, to be grateful for every opportunity I have to be around my teammates, to be on the court and to be able to compete in the game I love. Life-wise, to take care of those around you during such a hard me. A phone call can go a long ways to loved ones, friends and even those who you may not have talked to in a while.

What is your biggest complaint about your sport? That I can’t play it forever.

How many pillows do you sleep with?

Depending on the night, around four or five.

Usually two behind my head, a knee pillow and a body pillow.

Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest? Even though my family may not agree because it’s some mes off, definitely my sense of smell. The eyes and ears are no help.

If you had a warning label, what would yours say? Look out for her hair. It’s basically a weapon when braided.

What is one thing you will never do again?

I will never forget to shake the ketchup bo le before squeezing it onto my burger again.

What job would you be terrible at? Any sort of desk job that doesn’t involve human interac on. That’s one of the reasons I chose to be a teacher, because I am able to influence students and every day isn’t the same.

What is special about the place you grew up? I grew up in a beau ful, small town located on a lake and at the base of a ski mountain. So both summer and winter are the best seasons to be there!

How do you relax a er a long day? I like to light candles, turn on my Christmas lights and watch my favorite TV show.

What one thing do you really want but can’t afford yet? A boat to take on the lake in my hometown!

What is a small thing that makes your day be er? A phone call from my parents.

What is the most annoying ques on that people ask you regularly? Do you think I could beat you 1-on-1?

What hobby would you get into if me and money weren’t an issue? Pain ng! I don’t have much of a collec on of tools to paint, but when I have the chance it’s my favorite thing to do.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives? Skydiving! I went this summer and it was the best experience of my life. It’s like you’re watching a movie yet experiencing the most thrilling ac vity ever.

If you could turn any ac vity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for? I would like to think that I wouldn’t be so bad at puzzles.

I am not sure about Olympic level, but it would be cool to see it at an Olympic level.

What do you spend the most me thinking about? My sheepadoodle puppy, Murphy, is my baby. So naturally he is on my mind quite a bit!

What’s the best thing you got from your parents? Two great role models who have guided me through some of the most challenging mes in my life.

Which of your scars has the best story behind it? The scar that always gets people asking are my kidney surgery scars. I have five incisions on my side, so people at the lake will usually wonder what they are from.

Not much of a story behind it other than it was a random surgery where a piece of my kidney was removed!

What do you regret not doing or star ng when you were younger? I really wish that I was exposed to golfing when I was younger because that is a sport that you can do later in life. That is one of the first things I am trying when I am done.

What is the most annoying thing about having yourself as a roommate? I don’t really love doing dishes and I currently live in a place that doesn’t have a dishwasher. I am sure that would be annoying to be my roommate if I didn’t clean the dishes a er a meal.

' B The coronavirus pandemic has taught me:

How much I appreciate my family. It was unfortunate to have school go online, but I loved being able to go home to Oregon and spend me with my parents, my sisters and my niece!

Who is your hero? My older sisters, Sloan and Marly. I think they’re both insanely smart, they played college sports and they are beau ful inside and out! I would do anything for them!

What could you give a 40-minute presentaon on with absolutely no prepara on? A rundown on the whole storyline of season 10 of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

What is your biggest fear? Running into a grizzly bear in Montana. I’m scared to hike here.

What hobby would you get into if me and money weren’t an issue? Surfing! I think hanging out at the beach all day and being in the ocean would be a perfect life for me.

What really makes you angry? When Market on Front raises their breakfast burrito price by a dollar every year.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Adopt a rescue dog.

What mo vates you to work hard? My teammates and my coaches! Also my strong disdain for the Bobcats.

There are two types of people in this world. What are the two types?

Close-minded and open-minded.

What’s the tallest building you’ve been to the top of? I’m guessing the Space Needle. I don’t love heights.

What personality trait do you value most, and which do you dislike the most? My favorite thing about myself is having an ability to be able to find something in common with whoever I am talking to. My least favorite quality is that I get nervous to meet new people.

What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done? Talked back to my mom.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? I think both. If I feel comfortable with the group I am with, I have a lot of fun! Otherwise I like to hang out by myself and do my own thing.

If you had a warning label, what would yours say? I would put a sarcasm warning label on my forehead.

What is one event in your life that made you who you are? Becoming a Lady Griz.

Ge ng the opportunity to play Division I basketball at UM has taught me what hard work, responsibility and being a real compe tor is. I also have met lifelong friends here and am ge ng a degree in something that I love!

What is special about the place you grew up? Growing up in Hillsboro, I was 10 miles from Portland and 50 miles from the beach.

I spent a lot of me at the Oregon Coast when I was younger!

What is the most annoying thing about having yourself as a roommate? When I am bored or lonely I’ll just go stand in their room or lay on their floor. They’ve accepted it now though.

To not take anything for granted and to be grateful for what I have in the present moment, such as my family.

I also learned that the “problems” I used to worry about weren’t really problems at all.

If you were ruler of your own country, what would be the first law you would introduce? I would introduce a law of free healthcare for everyone, regardless of whether you are a ci zen of my country or visi ng.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? I think I’m a mix of both! I honestly can’t decide. I like both being around people and alone me!

Would you rather win the lo ery or work at the perfect job? I would rather work the perfect job that gives me the most sa sfacon. They say you work for most of your life, so I want to make sure it’s something worthwhile!

Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest? I would have to say my eyesight!

What is the most annoying ques on that people ask you regularly? I’ve been asked more than once if I’m from Tanzania, which was an interes ng one! I’ve also been asked if Tasmania is a country! I guess to clear the air, Tasmania is a state of Australia and I refer to myself as being Australian.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

I think everyone should travel and live outside of their hometown/country at least once in their life me. I could not recommend it more!

What is a small thing that makes your day be er? Definitely ge ng to see my teammates and coaches every day! Each person inspires me to be the best I can. I could not imagine a day where I’m not laughing!

How do you relax a er a long day? Movie night with my roommates! I think I’ve lost count of the total number of movies we’ve all watched together!

If you could make a 20-second phone call to yourself at any point in your life, when would you call and what would you say? I would call myself when I’m 80 years old and ask myself for advice.

There are two types of people in this world. What are the two types? People who drink coffee and people who drink decaf.

What do you regret not doing or star ng when you were younger? I’ve always wanted to be really good at playing the piano. I think it’s such a cool skill to have.

What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years? Travelling! I want to go EVERYWHERE. COVID-free would also be nice.

What hobby would you get into if me and money weren’t an issue? Going to yoga classes.

What’s your favorite family tradi on? I love Christmas Day with my family because we always spend the a ernoon together at the beach!

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way? I love to bake things from scratch. It takes longer but it’s so worth it!

What is special about the place you grew up? I grew up in Hobart and I love it because you are never too far away from the city, the beach or the countryside! There is a li le bit of everything.

Who is the most intelligent person you know? My mum! She always knows the right thing to say and has taught me everything! I would not be me without her.

What mo vates you to work hard? My family! Being so far away from home only mo vates me further to make the most out of this experience and to make them proud.

Knowing that they will get to see me play means everything to me.

To slow down and take a breather.

Things can change in an instant, so take a moment every day to be thankful for all you have.

What is/was your favorite family vaca on?

When my whole family went to Mexico. It was so nice to chill by the beach, eat good food, shop and go ziplining with everyone!

Would you rather win the lo ery or work at the perfect job? I would absolutely love to win the lo ery! I really want to be rich but not have to work. I really want to come up with a big- me inven on!

On a scale of 1-10, how funny would you say you are? I crack myself up all the me, so I would give myself about an 8. But to other people I am probably about a 5 or 6.

Who is the most intelligent person you know? My brother Jaren. I feel like he knows everything about everything.

What job would you be terrible at? I would hate to give parking ckets. I understand it is for a reason but I would just feel like I was constantly ruining people’s days.

What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home? The summer a er my freshman year of college, three of my friends and I went to Phuket, Thailand, which is 8,230 miles away from Malta.

What is special about the place you grew up? If you know me, you know I am obsessed with Malta! It is filled with lots of my family, a great community and is a big sports town.

What’s worth spending more money on to get the best? One of my high school teachers always said, “Spend good money on your bed and on your shoes because you are living your life in one or the other.”

What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way? Scoring three points.

Making a three is cool but ge ng an andone and making your free throw is pre y cool too!

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives? I think everyone should go on a ten-day vacaon to the No. 1 place on their bucket list.

What is something that a ton of people are obsessed with, but you just don’t get the point of? Coffee. Personally I think it is nasty and most people LOVE it!

What’s the best thing you got from your parents? I have go en a lot of great things from them but my most favorite thing of all are my siblings!

If you could make a 20-second phone call to yourself at any point in your life, when would you call and what would you say? I would call my freshman-in-college-self and say, “Yo, Sophia, you might want to think twice about driving to the basket against North Dakota.”

Which of your scars has the best story behind it? I have a big scar on my arm that I got while figh ng with my sister.

What do you regret not doing or star ng when you were younger? I wish I would have played AAU basketball. When my teammates talk about it, it always sounds fun and l feel it could have helped develop my game.

What personality trait do you value most, and which do you dislike the most? Generosity is something I always admire, because it is something so selfless. So I guess my least favorite trait would be selfishness.

That doesn’t look good on anybody.

What could you do with $2 million that would impact the most number of people?

Invest that money into a business in which all profits would be donated to charity.

(Hopefully the business is successful!)

What is the most annoying thing about having yourself as a roommate? I constantly want to talk! I will go into my roommates’ rooms while they are trying to do their homework and start talking to them.

How important it is to find meaningful ways to spend your me past the work-entertainment-sleep cycle, and to surround yourself with down-to-earth people.

What is your favorite family vaca on? My favorite family vaca on is going to Flathead Lake in the summer to fish and paddleboard.

What mo vates you to work hard? I am mo vated to work hard because I want to help as many people as I can learn to live a healthier life and to be happy.

Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse or drive a car? I have always wanted to ride a horse. I think that would be an awesome way to get around. Plus you get to have an extra friend!

If you could hire someone to help you, what would you have them do? If I could hire anyone, I would hire a personal chef so that I don’t have to worry about cooking all the me!

Would you rather win the lo ery or work at the perfect job? I would much rather have the perfect job than win the lo ery, because then no day would feel like work but every day you could feel like you’re making a difference. The coolest job tle I can think of would be Extraterrestrial Ambassador.

How do you relax a er a long day? A er a long day, the best thing to do is to read a good book. Science and science-fic on books are my favorites, but The Alchemist is the favorite.

Going to Hawaii. It was my first me going there, and the views and hikes on Kauai were amazing. Also the wild chickens were pre y cool.

Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse or drive a car? Ride a horse, because they are my favorite animal.

I want to be happy doing what I’m doing and feel like I’m out doing something that is making a difference. I’d feel more accomplished.

Doing things like going on walks and apprecia ng nature’s beauty, along with being thankful for the people I call family became three of the major things that have changed since Covid began. We complain so o en, yet don’t realize how blessed we are. I show much more gra tude for things that used to be thoughtless parts of my life.

What age do you wish you could permanently be? I would pick 25. I would have just finished up school and have hopefully found a job I enjoy. I also am s ll young enough to not be considered old.

What is your biggest fear? My biggest fear is drowning. I never want to experience any situa on like that.

What is the most annoying thing about having yourself as a roommate? I set so many alarms in the morning that I somemes don’t wake up to. I am sure my roommate enjoys listening to a siren go off for five minutes five mes every morning.

Who is your hero? My biggest hero is definitely my late-grandma. She fought cancer for seven years and it never stopped her from doing what she loved. Even during her rough days she s ll went and taught dance classes. She disciplined and inspired a lot of people during her life me and le a huge impact on my life.

The 2020-21 season is Mike Petrino’s first year as the head women’s basketball coach at Montana a er serving as an assistant coach with the Lady Griz the previous four years.

Montana went from seven to 14 to 14 to 17 wins while Petrino was an assistant coach. The team’s 17 wins in 2019-20 were the most for the program since 2015-16.

The Lady Griz advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Conference tournament in 201718, Jace Henderson was voted second-team All-Big Sky in 2018-19, and McKenzie Johnston was named first-team All-Big Sky in 2019-20.

Petrino, who was born in Glasgow and raised in Kalispell, has more than two decades of coaching experience, from high school freshmen to Colorado of the Pac-12, where he was on staff in 2015-16.

A er coaching at various schools throughout Montana, Petrino moved to Portland in the early 2000s and took a teaching and coaching posi on at Central Catholic High.

He spent 10 years at the school, the final five as the head coach of the boys’ basketball team.

The Rams went 97-37 under Petrino, won five Mt. Hood Conference tles and twice placed

third at the Oregon Class 6A state tournament.

He was named the Mt. Hood Conference Coach of the Year three mes in his five years as head coach.

Petrino started coaching Division I women’s basketball in 2011-12, when he was hired at Wyoming. He would spend four years on Joe Legerski’s staff. The Cowgirls twice won 20 or more games and advanced to the 2013 WNIT. He was on Linda Lappe’s staff at Colorado in 2015-16.

A 1999 graduate of MSU Billings, Petrino is married to the former Kelly Hays, the daughter of former Griz basketball player Eric Hays.

The couple has two daughters, Jamieson and Hayden.

Petrino’s brothers, Jason and Jared, are on the football coaching staff at Southern Illinois.

Petrino’s cousin, Paul, is the head football coach at Idaho. Another cousin, Bobby, is the head coach at Missouri State. He previously was the head coach at Louisville and Arkansas, and with the Atlanta Falcons.

His uncle, Bob Sr., was the long me football coach at Carroll College in Helena, Mont.

JORDAN SULLIVAN A The 2020-21 season is Jordan Sullivan’s fourth year as an assistant coach at Montana, her first as the program’s recrui ng coordinator.

Originally hired in September 2016, Sullivan served as the program’s director of basketball administra on in 2016-17.

In her first year as an assistant coach, in 2017-18, the Lady Griz improved from seven to 14 wins and won a game at the Big Sky Conference tournament. In 2018-19, Montana once again won 14 games.

The Lady Griz ed for fourth in the Big Sky in 2019-20, earned a bye at the league tournament and won 17 games overall, their most since going 20-11 in 2015-16.

Sullivan, who was born and raised in Sidney, was recruited to play for the Lady Griz by her uncle, former Montana coach Robin Selvig.

She played in a then program-record 129 games for the Lady Griz and was a member

of teams that won 81 games and advanced to three na onal tournaments.

Montana faced UCLA in the 2011 NCAA tournament when Sullivan was a freshman and Georgia in 2013.

The Lady Griz went 23-11 in 2013-14, Sullivan’s senior year. She was voted second-team All-Big Sky Conference a er averaging a career-high 11.6 points. That team advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Sullivan was a two- me Big Sky Player of the Week in her career and was named the Montana AAU Li le Sullivan Award winner following her senior season.

The four- me Academic All-Big Sky selecon graduated from Montana in 2014 with a marke ng degree.

Sullivan played professionally in Denmark in 2014-15 and in Luxembourg in 2015-16.

NATE COVILL A The 2020-21 season is Nathan Covill’s second year as an assistant coach at Montana.

He joined the staff in August 2019 a er working the previous three seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program at Willame e University, a Division III school in Salem, Ore. In Covill’s first year at Montana, the Lady Griz won 17 games, the most for the program since the 2015-16 season.

Originally from Long Beach, Calif., Covill played basketball at Montana in the early 1990s. He averaged 6.6 points and 4.7 rebounds as a senior in 1995-96.

The Grizzlies advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1991-92, when Covill was in his first year in the program, the NIT in 1994-95, when he was a redshirt junior.

Covill, who graduated from Montana with a degree in elementary educa on in 1998, previously taught in Southern California and coached boys’ basketball at Mar n Luther King High from 1999-2008.

The Wolves won the 2002 CIF Division 2 state championship and the 2008 CIF Division IAA Southern Sec on tle. Both years they earned a spot in the top 25 in the USA Today na onal rankings.

Covill, who worked as a special educa on case manager for the Redmond (Ore.) School District from 2008-16, was the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Redmond High for one season, the school’s head girls coach for three and the head boys coach at Ridgeview High for four.

Covill is married to the former Angella Bieber, who played for the Lady Griz from 1994-95 to 1997-98.

She was a member of Robin Selvig-coached teams that won 99 games over four seasons and four mes advanced to the NCAA Tournament. She was voted the Big Sky’s Outstanding Sixth Player as a junior, the Big Sky tournament MVP as a senior.

The Covills have two daughters, Aus n and Alex.

JACE HENDERSON A The 2020-21 season is Jace Henderson’s first year as an assistant coach at Montana. She was a graduate assistant coach for the Lady Griz in 2019-20.

Henderson was a five-year student-athlete at Montana, playing one year of volleyball before spending the next four on the women’s basketball team.

Henderson was named second-team All-Big Sky Conference as a senior, in 2018-19, when she averaged 12.0 points and 8.6 rebounds.

She shot 56.1 percent that season, the second-best performance in Lady Griz history.

Henderson is a 2019 graduate of Montana, a 2014 graduate of Billings Senior High. Her dad, Brian, was the women’s basketball coach at Rocky Mountain College in Billings for 13 seasons.
