Friday night comedian Lyndy Phillips shared his experiences of growing up on the family farm in Texas combining humor and magic to entertain the crowd. He invited Ridge Cator board member Ben Peterson, Jen Bishop and Lela Didier to be part of the act. Phillips said “laughter is the best medicine.”

FUE Leadership Program

Saturday morning at the Farmers Union Enterprise breakfast FUE Leadership couple Walter Schweitzer and Cindy Palmer shared their experience in the leadership program.

Among the highlights of the program the couple attended the Minnesota Farmers Union State Convention, the National Farmers Union Convention in Missouri and the D.C. Fly-in. They talked about the many places the couple toured including a coal fire generation plant, a milling plant and much more. Palmer said her favorite part of the experience was meeting the other couples. “The first time we got together we were kind of nervous, but by the end of the first trip we couldn’t wait to see our new friends again.”

“I definitely appreciate Farmers Union Enterprise,” said Schweitzer. “We had a lot of fun playing around with farmers from around the country.”

Industrial Hemp

The event concluded with a panel on Industrial Hemp including panelists Laura Garber, a farmer in Hamilton; Colby Johnson, a hemp farmer and rancher in Conrad and Kirby Hancock, founder of Transformative Ecologies.

Each panelist is utilizing the crop in a different way. They shared with the group their experiences with Industrial Hemp and what the future may hold for this emerging crop. Laura Garber grows two acres of hemp on her farm in Hamilton. “A goal on our farm is to educate and with our location so visible lots of people get to see it,” said Garber. “It’s a really good opportunity to destigmatize Industrial Hemp in the Bitterroot Valley and Montana in general.”

Farmer Colby Johnson grows the crop near Conrad and is a partner in a local processing facility for CBD Oil. “Marijuana and hemp might smell the same, but they don’t have the same properties I think that is the biggest challenge is educating people on the difference between the two. LOW-STRESS CATTLE HANDLING BENEFITS LIVESTOCK AND RANCHER

There’s no doubt fall is a busy time for cattle producers across Montana. Many ranchers are gathering cattle, weaning calves, shipping, and pregnancy testing. This can not only be a stressful time for cattle, but for the rancher also. I thought there would be no better way to kick off the annual MFU convention than with a low-stress cattle handling clinic. The focus of the clinic was to help people handling cattle be able to move and sort cattle with ease. Curt Pate is a renowned cattle handling clinician who puts on workshops across the U.S. and Canada. Curt has put clinics on at large feedlots and small operations.

Each rancher works cattle differently whether on a horse, ATV or by foot. Regardless of how you work cattle the one constant that needs to be understood and applied is positioning and pressure to move cattle calmly and efficiently. In order to do this, one must be able to understand and read cattle so that when applying pressure and you can move cattle with ease and not create an environment of stress. Curt demonstrated these cues on horseback

and foot. He worked the cattle in an open arena by horse and moved them efficiently without having cattle on the run and all over the place. The herd stayed together and moved about calmly due to Curt applying light pressure and moving his horse in the correct position. After working the cattle on horseback he moved cattle into a corral system. Those demonstrations gave attendees a chance to see cattle worked in many ways always using the same two objectives, pressure and position. While it’s easy to get frustrated moving cattle the one thing Curt stressed is PATIENCE! Work with cattle can become a lot harder if you get in a hurry and try to rush things. When working cattle it’s important to remember that you are training your cattle just as you are teaching yourself about your herd. The more you work your cattle and are patient the better they will get down the road.

Senior Youth Advisory Council (SYAC) is a group of five campers who get elected at Senior Camp to help plan next year’s camp. There will be meetings held at our state office throughout the year where we will discuss themes, speakers, and activities for our upcoming camp season. During camp we set aside time for each of the campers to write a speech on why they want to be on SYAC and their goals for the next year.

Once they have given their speech each of the campers get to vote on who they think will best represent Montana Farmers Union Youth. This year’s SYAC that was elected during our 2018 senior camp include: Abby Clark, Maci Molinario, Baylee Blansett, Kayla Klundt, and James Van Sypk! If you see one of these youth please congratulate them on being elected and ask them questions about our upcoming camp! Lastly, if you have any input on what you want to see at camp or in our youth program please don’t hesitate to contact the state office or one of our SYAC Members.

My favorite music to listen to is mostly country. Some of my favorite things to do is camping , fishing , boating and hang out with my family, friends and pets. I have been going to Farmers Union Camp for 5 years and have been going up to Arrowpeak Lodge for my whole life for family reunions. Being on SYAC I hope to bring back some of the activities that we did in the past that I really enjoyed.

I also want to be involved and to just have fun while being productive to help better the Montana Farmers Union Camp.

I'm James Van Spyk, I'm 16 years old and was born and raised in Great Falls, Montana. I'm currently a junior at Great Falls High School. For SYAC I hope to be able to be more involved within the summer camps for Farmers Union.

I’m very involved in as many activities and extracurricular that I can and I love helping out anyone in need. Farmers Union has been a great experience for me, ever since my parents introduced me to the program about four or five years ago. It has helped me learn leadership and social skills, all from camps. Now that I’m on the SYAC board, I’m excited to help organize my favorite summer activity into something I would’ve loved and wanted when I was younger.

Baylee Blansett Fort Benton High School I’m Baylee Blansett, I am 15 years old and a sophomore at Fort Benton High School. I moved here from southern Utah with my parents and two older brothers. My hobbies are hunting , fishing , and playing volleyball. In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and listening to music.

MFU POLICY TO GUIDE ORGANIZATON IN LEGISLATIVE SESSION

The 2018 convention of Montana Farmers Union is now committed to the archives. One leg of the Farmers Union triangle made up of cooperation, education and legislation is the focus of this article. Your organization continues to place the preservation of rural community life and the longstanding independence of farmers living on the family farm in first place. The best definition is that a family farm is run by a family who assumes the economic risk and who make the management decisions. This becomes

more difficult with each succeeding year while large corporations take over what once was a single family operation.With that in mind the policy committee, appointed by the president of MFU, represents each area of this vast state and every type of operation, from conventional, organic, small beginning farmer operations, pulse and small grains, plus a recent opportunity of raising Industrial hemp. These men and women bring their expertise in reviewing and recommending resolutions from the many locals and counties representing Farmers Union membership. The policies submitted then proceed to the convention floor for debate

where they are voted either up or down and end up in the following year’s policy book. This book is where our lobbyist develop testimony for presentation in front of the Montana Legislature which meets every other year. It is also a key document that this organization uses when addressing legislation and other issues on a wider national or international level. If it is not addressed in policy, MFU does not get involved, unless the board of directors meet and decide to do so, between the annual convention. In other words we are silent without special action.
