We just flow, and we’re one another’s best friend. Our day was filled with the people who love us – our families who are closer than most. In the midst of a pandemic we still made it happen. The wedding was stunningly beautiful and something truly special in a year that was unstable. Life felt normal again for a night. GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Makayla + Hunter “Hunter and I met in Minneapolis in 2016. I had just moved to the city and Hunter’s sister, who I knew from college, was coming into town. She reached out saying she was visiting her brother and would love to reconnect. The rest, as they say, is history. After dating for about two months, we decided we were going to quit our jobs and backpack in Southeast Asia together. Not even six months later, we did. We spent five months traveling throughout Southeast Asia on a very tight budget. I suppose we knew it would last after being together every waking second during that time frame without killing each other. We both love to travel and camp, so for my thirtieth birthday we rented a camper van and went to Olympic National Park. The first day there, Hunter gave me my birthday gift: a Nikon camera. I had been saying I wanted one for months because I love taking pictures when we travel and wanted to start taking a photography class. He encouraged me to play around with it and learn how to use the timer so we could take pictures together as we made different stops. After a couple days of hiking, driving to new locations, and sleeping in epic camping spots, we ended up on Ruby Beach for my birthday. We set up the camera on some driftwood, and then Hunter would go get in position and then I would set the camera timer and run out to meet him for the wide shot. After a few tries, he told me we should get a little closer. I wanted a wide shot, but obliged. The last time I ran out to the spot and went to put my arm around him, he was moving. Next thing I knew, he was on one knee with a ring. I don’t remember anything he said, but we did get the photo! Our wedding was supposed to be in August 2020 at a venue near Madison, Wisconsin. We had a 150-person guest list, a big band booked and all of the vendors picked out. Although our venue was great, something always felt like it wasn’t quite ‘us,’ but it was close to many of our family and friends, and it was accessible and affordable to get to for others. We ended up having to postpone because of the pandemic, but didn’t want to wait until 2021. We’d been to Glacier National Park before and love the mountains, so we decided that we should elope there. It wasn’t what we originally had planned, but that’s also what made it so special. It really felt like us. Now we can’t imagine having done it any other way. Even though it was tough to make the decision to get married without our parents there (we didn’t want to risk anyone getting sick), when it was all said and done, we knew we made the right choice. I also love that we’ll be able to take our kids to GNP and show them exactly where we got married and take anniversary trips there over the years.”

Jane + Bryant “Bryant and I met ten years ago in high school French class. After high school, he went off to college in Bozeman, and I started college in Chico, California. We long-distance dated for a year and a half until I moved to Bozeman in 2015. From there, we got our first dog, and we spent our free time camping, hiking, backpacking, snowmobiling, and skiing. Bryant proposed to me under a frozen waterfall in 17-degree weather in 2018. He chose Palisade Falls because that is the first hike we went on together when I moved to Bozeman six years ago. For two years, we planned a dream wedding that was to take place at Foster Creek Farm on our nine year dating anniversary with about 200 friends and family. When Covid hit, it was hard to decide how to move forward. A month before the wedding, we postponed everything and asked the wedding party and our immediate family to hike up the mountain and join us in our elopement. We were supposed to hike down from the ridge to a teal blue lake, but when we reached the top, the lake had dried up sometime in the seven days since we had last seen it. This was just one last change of plans during our already crazy wedding! We stood at the top of the ridge, in the roaring wind, and got married! Our wedding became the biggest blessing and best memory we will ever share.”

OV E R N I GH T V I S I T ORS “Our elopement was not what we had been planning for the previous two years. I work for Tailored and Tied and have a background in interior design. So letting go of a very detailed, large wedding was incredibly hard. We missed having all of our friends and family there, but our day was simply just us. I could not have dreamed of a more perfect way to celebrate than standing at the top of a mountain ridge marrying my best friend. The best moment of the day was after our first kiss everyone started cheering and our German shepherd, Loki, started howling with excitement so everyone joined in with a big howl. That night, my now husband and I backpacked down to the dried up lake. I had a friend string nine years worth of photos in the trees and that’s where we set up our tent. During the night we had at least seven big mountain goats in our campsite, and we just watched them quietly pass through in the moonlight. I could not have asked for a more perfect wedding.” What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana elopement? “Think of your favorite moments with your significant other and let that guide your special day. Don’t stress yourself over all of the planning and know that in the moment you are saying ‘I do,’ nothing else matters.”

EN JOY EVERY MOMEN T “I am the biggest over-planner, and in the middle of the ceremony our officiant asked me to place the ring on Bryant’s finger, and I instantly looked up at him with big eyes and said ‘oh my God!’ His ring was in my backpack off in the trees. So, we had a small pause in the ceremony as I ran down the hill in my heels to get his ring while everyone was chuckling. It made the day that much more memorable!”

“In January of 2012, Sam and I met at the Crystal Bar in Bozeman during their infamous ‘power hour’ (if you know, you know). I was new to town, and Sam was fresh off the oil rig the night we met. Thinking it would be fun and short-lived due to his work schedule, we traveled, explored, and always hit the ground running when he was home. We moved in together five months after we met and never looked back. Sam had the mountain man vibe I shamelessly loved (and I got lucky that he was actually a nice guy) – and he also laughed at my jokes. We are always happiest in the mountains. I knew Hyalite Peak would not be an easy place to get to, but we knew it would be worth it. Of our crew of 12, only two others had ever conquered a hike of this distance. After two hail storms, lots of laughs, and a few beers, the 7-mile trek up culminated in gale force winds at Hyalite Lake. Our sunset summit would have to wait until morning. D AY T W O | R E A C H I N G T H E P E A K “I had dreamed of a magical, intimate moment with Sam on Hyalite Peak – one more mile up – and we finally made it the next morning. The mountain will forever hold a special place in the hearts of everyone that was on that hike: the crazy weather, the change of schedule, the campfire conversations. Then, the next day was pure love. We wanted to create something unforgettable for all of our people – something to remember forever. We did not exchange vows on that mountaintop. For us, the emotion on top of the peak was a vow in itself, and it left us both perfectly speechless. I am so proud of that moment. It is ours forever.”

D A Y T H R E E | W E D D I N G D AY “We were meant to summit Hyalite Peak on Thursday evening at sunset. Due to weather, we headed up Friday morning, which postponed our return to town by several hours. We had no cell phone service for 36 hours. The best moment was – after speeding back to Bozeman – dirty, wet and tired, and throwing our packs down – rushing to see our entire family waiting for us (and let them know we were alive). It was time to share the story, the love, and to celebrate. Party time!” SARAH’S CREDITS “Book Opal & Ox. Kristi and Ralphie dove head first into our crazy vision and made our experience an absolute blast. They rolled with the punches and captured the energy, emotion, and love within those three days. IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK Known as the Crown of the Continent, Glacier National Park is a small and (relatively) unknown gem in the Northwest corner of Montana. Established in 1910, it covers just over one million acres of land stretching to the Canadian border. It is home to 762 lakes, more than 700 miles of hiking trails, and the infamous Going-To-The-Sun Road. Its breathtaking views, incredible wildlife, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets bring approximately 3 million visitors to the park each year. Glacier National Park is a truly beautiful piece of Montana. A record number of Glacier wedding permits have been approved for 2021 as couples continue to focus on small, intimate weddings. Are you eyeing a Glacier elopement? If so, you’re in the right place. We’ve outlined the steps to elope in Glacier National Park with help from senior photographer and planner Jennifer Mooney, a Whitefish native who explores the park with couples year after year. 1. ESTABLISH YOUR INVESTMENT Eloping maximizes your wedding budget, and truly allows you to book the high-quality vendors of your dreams. Elopements, intimate weddings, and micro-weddings have become extremely popular recently, not only due to Covid restrictions, but also because many couples have prioritized the destination, photography, videography and the intimacy of the day. 2. BOOK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER Your photographer should be booked before your other vendors. Because they end up being your local guide, early booking and frequent communication will lead to a seamless elopement – full of advice and recommendations only a local professional can give. Many photographers in the Glacier Park area offer elopement planning packages with their services. Be sure you have a strong connection with the vendor you choose and their work speaks to you. In the end, the story your photographer tells of your wedding day is based on someone who gets you, individually and as a couple, and captures what matters most to you. T HI NGS T O CONSI D ER NEW TICKETING SYSTEM | To manage overcrowding, construction, and Covid precautions, the National Park Service has issued a ticketing system in Glacier National Park for the 2021 season. Beginning Memorial Day and running through Labor Day, the system will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the West Glacier and St. Mary’s Entrances. More information is available at nps.gov. WEATHER | When planning an elopement outdoors, the weather is certainly unpredictable, and this is especially true in Glacier. Some days may feel like you’re in all four seasons within hours of each other! Being prepared for all kinds of weather is key. PEAK SEASON | Summer is peak season; typically July and August, when the park is fully open. Vendors can book up to 18 months in advance for these dates, so planning ahead is crucial. Most vendors have much more availability mid-week with a lower starting rate. Though completely doable on a weekend, you’re looking at a significant price increase and less availability.

3. FINALIZE YOUR GUEST COUNT The number of guests at your wedding determines which locations can hold your ceremony. We suggest fewer than 10 guests because many locations in Glacier cater to this number, but it is possible to have up to 25 guests at your elopement. 4. HIRE OTHER VENDORS Consider the other vendors you wish to book. Will you do your own hair and makeup? Do you want a bouquet? A cake? In the state of Montana, anyone can marry you. Will it be a friend or will you hire a professional officiant? Do you want a videographer to document your day so that you can show your family and friends? Consider these things, and book your vendors as soon as you have made a decision on each. The Montana Bride Vendor Collective (see page 119) is a great place to start your hunt for experienced, high-quality vendors. 5. OBTAIN A PARK PERMIT Obtaining a permit is key to getting married in Glacier Park. Once you have chosen your location within the park, you can pick an exact ceremony spot. Typically, your planner or photographer will help guide you on the best time for your ceremony based on lighting. Apply for a permit as soon as you have determined your guest count and location. 6. ENVISION YOUR DAY Wedding planning is stressful no matter the size. Close your eyes, and think about how you want to feel on your wedding day. As you move forward with your plans, always come back to this feeling. Let this vision guide your decisions, and when small things go wrong, remember the bigger picture – that this day is the start of your marriage, and that is truly all that matters.

“I always had a crush on Chad – his dimples and charm had me in high school! Our story began with a friendship of many years before dating for six. Our love for each other grew with each new day of dating; the adventures of traveling and the chapters of our love story unfolded before our eyes. It gave me the perfect starting point to begin searching for wedding vendors’ work and details that I wanted to incorporate into our day. I would recommend reaching out to vendors immediately if you identify with their work because their schedules can book up months in advance. If we had waited a few more days with reaching out to our videographer, we would not have the video of our dreams to share with the ones we love. We planned with plenty of time to travel to Montana the summer before and meet with most of our vendors. It was important for us to get a feel for our venue and understand what it was going to look and feel like on our wedding day. “It was during Christmastime in 2019, and we were making our rounds to see as much family as we could in the north Texas area (we live in Austin). According to Kerry, he had bought the ring four months prior and was looking for the ‘perfect’ moment to make it happen. After being suspicious for a few days, I finally gave up the idea and laughed off the possibility for another time. The day after Christmas, Kerry’s mom and sister made plans for us girls to get our nails done and grab drinks in downtown Fort Worth. Looking back now, all signs led to an obvious engagement setup, but I didn’t catch on that evening!

ENGA GEMENT

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK After drinks, Kerry’s sister mentioned she had to go turn some lights off at her work nearby. The site was for weddings, so of course it was lit so beautifully with string lights across all of the massive oak trees. Brittney (Kerry’s sister) asked for us to come help her, so I hopped out of the car and walked towards the gazebo she mentioned had a light switch on it. That is when I see Kerry come out from behind a tree and walk toward me. I immediately started to cry and he took my hand and walked me up to the gazebo with red roses and rose petals spread around its surface. We just hugged and cried together for a while and neither of us remember what was said, but it was the happiest moment of our lives. That’s when I said ‘yes’ ... after he got down on one knee, of course! After that, I was surprised to see a massive group of our close family standing right behind us, who had apparently been there the whole time! Everyone was hiding! We popped champagne and it was by far one of the most magical nights of our lives!”

What do you love most about one another? “Kerry is the most patient and giving soul I have ever met on this Earth, and I love him for it. But I do have to say, his ability to make me laugh all the time (seriously, all the time) is my favorite thing about him. It's corny, but I always say I have never stopped smiling or laughing since the day I met him.” – Brenna “Brenna is the most strong-willed person I have ever been blessed to meet. She is also on a constant mission of growth in any shape or form. She has taught me that you can be comfortable being uncomfortable as you work on bettering yourself. On the other hand, she is also very much capable of slowing it all down to stop and smell the roses. Change can be a scary thought, but growth with one another is a very exciting one, and I am lucky enough to get to do it with her!” – Kerry What was your engagement session like? “When we had our engagement session with Amber, it was our second day in Glacier National Park. The day before we had hiked the Highline Trail and noticed the fog, but with the sun out and the temperature high, we thought it was just due to high altitude. Much to our dismay, we woke up on the day of our engagement session to full on wildfire smoke and high winds in and around the Columbia Falls area (where we stayed). We hopped in Amber’s car once we met up, and she drove us all the way up to the Logan Pass Visitor Center. Lo and behold, the wind decided to pick up as soon as we stepped out of the car and threw us all for an improvising loop. Kerry and I won’t deny that we were rather disappointed with the wildfire smoke and crazy winds that rolled in just in time for our shoot, but there’s also no denying that the three of us made the absolute best of it and had a blast. By the end of the shoot we felt like Amber was family and felt so lucky to be guided by her. She made our pictures come to life, and we could not love them more.”

“We had to change everything about a month before our actual date. We shrunk our wedding from 175 guests to 32, which was just the wedding party and our parents. Since everyone was either in the wedding or a significant other, there were times when only five to ten people were not standing at the altar. It was very intimate. We had only the most important people by our sides that day, and it really made the importance of marriage and love shine through. Neil and I choreographed our first dance a week before our wedding day. We had a blast doing this together, and it taught us more about one another. We are far from dancers, especially dancing together, so of course we messed up the day of the wedding. After the official first dance, we fast forwarded the music and attempted the move again and were able to do it the second time. Everyone was going crazy and cheering. The world and social media paint the picture that your wedding day has to be perfect, but this reminded us that we are human, and it is more fun to create experiences together than it is to worry about being perfect. Planning a wedding is already stressful, but planning a wedding during a pandemic can be completely overwhelming. I would advise future brides to communicate early with their vendors (and review all contracts) so that the brides know what to expect in the event of uncontrollable circumstances. Another piece of advice would be to consider unconventional options. Smaller gatherings can allow for unique and intimate ways to celebrate, too.”

VOWS FO R T WO “Neil and I set aside time to share private vows together. We left the reception and walked to an open area with railroad tracks. Just us. We exchanged vows and got to talk to each other one-on-one. It gave us time to think, cherish the moment, and not be focused on the details of the day. It was important to both of us, and it helped the gravity of the day really set in.”

Megan, the real life bride turned model, had to cancel her reception and forgo debuting this stunning custom pantsuit. Mac’s Floral designed the bold bouquet in an attempt to busy her idle hands amidst the uncertainty of wedding season. Together, they wandered the quiet evening streets of Billings and captured the beauty of the unplanned – culminating in a cathartic smash of the bouquet to vent the emotion that defined 2020.

“Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming and stressful, even on the good days. Planning a wedding during a pandemic – stress on steroids! There was planning, re-planning, venue switching, health mandates, downsizing, social distancing, rules, more rules, and then a few more. Learning to operate within these guidelines was challenging, to say the least. So when our wedding did not go as planned, and we were unable to have a reception for our family and friends, Allison with Font and Figure asked if I’d like to get some pictures in the custom one-piece jumpsuit I was never able to wear for the party. I jumped at the chance to work with her and Mac’s Floral again. At the end of the session, Katie from Mac’s Floral asked if I wanted to smash the bouquet. Again, yes please! At first it felt a bit silly smashing the flowers against the back alley pavement, but then it began to feel ... good. It was just the release I needed to let go of those feelings of loss, sadness, frustration, and anger. As foolish as it may seem, the smashing of the bouquet was therapeutic. In those moments, I was able to release feelings that did not serve me and instead focus on the meaningful memories. After all, Braydon and I were married in front of 23 of our most cherished loved ones, and quite honestly, it was perfect. This past year was hard for many reasons and for many people. I am thankful to have one beautiful bright spot in the midst of all the chaos: June 5, 2020, the day I married Braydon.” – Megan

“Will and I met via work; we were both medical device sales reps for the same company at the time. He was the new associate in Arkansas, and I was the new thoracic sales specialist out of Texas. We met at the national sales meeting in Florida and instantly became friends. Fast forward ten months and we were both newly single. He asked me to fly to Arkansas to cover a sternal surgery that he had never seen before. Little did I know, he was well versed in this surgery and just wanted me to fly out and hang out with him. I said ‘yes,’ and I still remember walking out of the airport and seeing him in his vest, tight jeans, and boots, propped up against his car waiting for me. After three months of long-distance dating, he got promoted but had to move across the country to Spokane, WA. After two painful months of super-long-distance dating, we decided we couldn’t take it anymore. I took a leap of faith and moved from Texas to Washington to be with him. Six months after that, he got promoted again, and we had to move to Billings! Still just dating, not even engaged yet! I was so nervous and skeptical about Montana and Billings, but I am so glad we made the move – we love it here. The people are amazing, and we are thankful to live in such a beautiful place. I took a leap of faith for love by moving across the country to be with him, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Better to take a risk for love and fail, than to never take the risk at all, right?”

BI G BLESSI NGS “We had to shrink our guest list to 25 people a week before the wedding. I was so stressed and upset. However, this turned out to be the biggest blessing. Our day was so special and intimate. Our parents and family gave speeches during dinner, which were so heartfelt, genuine and beautiful. Everyone in the room was crying, including our photographers and the wait staff! The amount of love in that room between seemingly 25 strangers (our parents and families had never met in person before our wedding day because they live all over the country) was so touching. The one thing I was most stressed about turned into the biggest blessing and the best possible wedding I could have ever imagined. I am so thankful for our small, intimate day; it still makes my heart pound just thinking back on it.”

He performs at wedding ceremonies, cocktail hours, first dances and dinners. Over the years, Mike has played at more than 80 weddings, some of which have been featured on notable outlets such as Martha Stewart Weddings and Style Me Pretty. Every set is customized to create the right atmosphere for each individual wedding. Montana Bride got to ask Mike when his love of music began, what inspires him, and what advice he has for brides considering live music.

What first got you into music?

You have five solo albums! What is your creative process like?

How would you describe the music that you typically create? “I would describe my music as incredibly varied. Over the course of my career, both as a solo artist and with a couple of different bands, I’ve dabbled in blues, hard rock, pop, Americana, folk, and alternative rock. Early in my career I felt a little embarrassed of my fluid use of many genres. Now, however, I have embraced it as part of who I am, and I really enjoy the variety. I love equally, and in different ways, the experience of performing an intimate solo acoustic song or a hard-rocking, full-band, crank it up to 11 rock song and everything in between.”

What advice do you have for brides who want live music at their wedding but don’t know where to start? “Consider what elements of your wedding for which you’d like to have live music: prelude, ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, reception/dancing? Maybe all of it! And consider what style you want for each element. While certainly there are some musicians who can cover it all, perhaps consider getting specialists for different elements. Some will have just what it takes to deliver that sensitive ceremony moment, while others will keep your dance floor full all night. We are spoiled with many great and diverse musicians and bands here in Montana who can accommodate a wide range of musical applications for weddings.”

Jessica + Sage “We connected first on social media in 2018. We met for coffee for our first ‘official’ date and both knew we wanted to continue seeing each other after that. I brought Sage to go boating with me and my family on our second date because I was serious about dating and wanted to know right away if he was open to meeting my family, how he connected with them, and if he was good at wake surfing. After we had been dating for a few months, Sage invited me to join him on his backpacking trip to Europe that he had planned for years. I couldn’t say no to a new adventure. After two weeks together, in five different countries, we were off to a great start. We dated for a little less than two years and knew we were meant for each other. I was born in Bozeman, and Sage had never been to Montana before. He knew he wanted to propose in my home state, and he waited patiently until we made a trip there together. After I got the hint, I planned a trip for Sage’s birthday. Little did I know he had the big plans. The day after his birthday, he woke up early, got me up and told me he wanted to go on a picnic in a field of sunflowers. Picnics were normal for us, so I really didn’t think anything of it, except he did seem to be dressed up a little nicer than usual. Once we got to the spot, we started having our cheese, crackers and wine, and Sage brought a speaker to play some background music. Then he told me that it was time he sang the song that he wrote me. His hands and voice were shaking before even beginning. He wrote a song called, ‘Always be my sunflower,’ and toward the end of the song, the last lyric said, ‘Jessica Judith Simonson, will you marry me?’ and he was down on one knee. Meanwhile, our photographer, Merissa, was taking behind the scenes photos! Sage had booked her months in advance, and she was so helpful with the planning process and making sure it was a surprise. We celebrated with our pup, Sadie, popped some champagne, and enjoyed the beauty of Bozeman!”

What do you love most about one another? “It’s hard to choose just one thing, but what I love most about Sage is how he constantly pursues me as a person, a future wife, and knows exactly what he wants in his life. I love how easy-going, genuine, and loving he is to everyone he meets. He is a motivated individual, smart, hard-working, and loves himself so that he can love others well. Sage is the leader I’ve always wanted in a partner and for our future family. He makes me want to be a better person every day, and he’s always up for a crazy adventure. Also, he’s tall, dark and handsome, which is a major plus!” – Jessie “I could go on and on, but I love how strong Jessie is not just physically, but mentally. I love how big her heart is, how much she loves Jesus and her family. I love how hard of a worker she is, how she always gets cold and needs me to warm her up. I love how adventurous she is and how she wants to travel the world with me. I love her sleepy smile in the morning. I love how she laughs at my dumb jokes. I love that she’s so active, and I love them curls. Finally, I love Jessie for who she is and what she stands for. Plus, she’s incredibly sexy and that is a wonderful bonus!” – Sage What are your wedding plans? “I have always dreamt of a destination wedding! After exploring many venues around Montana, Idaho and Oregon (where Sage is from), we decided to get married somewhere completely different. We are getting married March 24, 2021, at Blue Venado Weddings in the Riviera Maya, Mexico.”

Kiera + Benjamin “Benji and I met briefly at a friend’s house three years ago, but more recently at a bonfire with friends on Flathead Lake. Our friends took notice that we could be a great couple, so they set out to get us together. After spending the summer getting to know one another, he asked me out on a date in October of 2019. A few days later, I left for a vacation to Greece, and Benji left for a two-month trip to India. As they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder, and we fell in love while apart. We traveled together frequently during our months of dating. Benji proposed in May of 2020, and despite Covid, we moved forward with planning and knew that this once-in-a-lifetime event needed to happen. Everyone needed something to celebrate, and a day filled with love and joy was just the thing. And that is exactly what it turned out to be. It was such a blessed wedding day, and we only wish we could re-live it over and over again. It seems that most Montana weddings happen outside in the mountains, at a farm, or in a barn, and we were hoping for something different. None of the cathedrals or churches had the elegant, sweet feel we were going for. I love the water and having met in Lakeside, we thought we could make something work there. The Harbor Grill had only held one or two smaller weddings at the restaurant, and we asked if they would be willing to do a larger one. Turned out we could rent the whole place, have them cater, and have our dream of a waterfront wedding in Montana at a unique location. We had our ceremony in a separate venue in Lakeside, and it was perfect. It was airy, bright and classy, and was built for community.”

What stands out as the best part of your day? “Our ceremony was unforgettable, and the dancing and food were a delight. The best part was having our two worlds come together during this time of Covid separation. It wasn’t just our wedding; it was also a reunion of family and friends.” What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana wedding? “Use a wedding planner. Their communication with your vendors is priceless, and we could not have imagined doing it all ourselves. The day-of coordination is also so important. Our parents and bridal parties actually got to enjoy the day fully without worrying about major details.”

“Derek and I met while attending pharmacy school at the University of Montana. Our first accidental date was spent at a Griz football game the day after we met. I had gotten separated from my friends, but we were having so much fun together that we didn’t go back into the game after halftime – we spent the rest of the game tailgating. We have been together ever since, and we chose our wedding date because it was exactly six years later to the day that we met. Like so many other couples in 2020, our wedding plans got seriously disrupted by Covid. We were planning on a 300-person wedding outside of Helena, where we live, but plans had to change quickly. We had gotten engaged in Glacier National Park in 2019, so it was already a really special place for us. We decided on a whim that we should elope in Glacier! We wanted our elopement to be very intimate, but it was important that our closest family be there, too. We had eight guests, and we rented a big house to stay in together for the weekend. We had our rehearsal dinner catered at the house by the Chef Guys, which was so delicious and low stress! It was wonderful to have that quality time with our families. My sister officiated our wedding ceremony, which was so special because she is the person who knows us best as a couple and she made the ceremony truly centered around our relationship. Heavy smoke rolled in on our wedding day, but it only ended up adding to the beauty of Glacier and made for some unique, magical views! We were lucky enough to get married in one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s so easy to get caught up in the Pinterest and Instagram wedding perfectness, but at the end of the day that’s not what people remember. Your wedding should represent you as a couple. It will also never be perfect! Take in the little moments of quiet love between all the chaos of the day because that’s what you’ll remember. And lastly, discuss the exact location of your ceremony with all of your guests if you are eloping in Glacier; it is a big place with very little cell phone service!”

Alexis + Michaela “We met in 2016 in Grand Forks, ND, where we both played softball for the University of North Dakota. After a year of close friendship, we realized our feelings were deeper than that. After coming out as a couple, we were very blessed to have been loved, supported, and accepted by our closest friends and families. We spent another three years living in North Dakota, where we shared our first home together and brought home our German shepherd, Kygo, whom we love and adore. We relocated to the Minneapolis area before the wedding as we finished our schooling remotely. Michaela will graduate in May 2021 with a masters in occupational therapy, and Lexi received her bachelor’s degree in commercial aviation in December 2020 and will go on to join the U.S. Navy as a pilot. We made a difficult decision in October 2020 to reduce our wedding guest list from more than 200 guests to only our immediate family and our wedding party. This turned out to be the biggest blessing in disguise. What made our day so beautiful was how intimate it was. Our dog was even able to be a part of our entire day, from the ceremony through the reception. Reflecting back on this, we would urge brides to carefully consider their guest list, and to always stay flexible throughout the wedding planning process! Ashley + Justin “The first time Justin took me to his hometown in Montana I knew we’d get married there. It’s such a beautiful and special place. When we started planning in the fall of 2019, we of course had no idea the pandemic was coming. We were lucky that we never had to make any plans to cancel or postpone our wedding, but we proceeded with caution. We wanted all of our family and friends (who lived mostly out East) to head out West, enjoy Glacier, and chill out. Everyone needed a vacation. We did have guest cancellations, which we completely understood, but no matter what turnout we had, we were pumped. We knew all of our close friends and family were all in. We ended up with the best crew we could ask for of 60 loved ones. With everyone flying in, we made it a big celebration over the whole weekend. About 30 of us went on a rafting trip with Glacier Raft Company for a pre-wedding float, we visited Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, and enjoyed dinner and drinks around the Flathead Valley. It was so fun to hear about everyone’s trip experiences and just how much they needed this breath of fresh air after the wild year of Covid.”

“I was born in California, and thirteen days later, on the opposite coast (Florida), James was born. Fast forward to 2015 when we were both living in Saint Petersburg, Florida. I was studying for the bar exam, and James was getting ready to start his dental residency. As luck had it, we both swiped right on Tinder and a match was made. While our Tinder match was instant, our meeting was not. I had a bar exam to study for and had no time to spend dating. Once the exam was over, I left quickly on a trip to Thailand and South Korea for three weeks. James messaged me while I was gone, but I was having too much fun to respond (even when I got home, oops). He messaged me one last time in the hopes that we would finally meet, and I agreed. We met at a local brewery where we quickly realized we had mutual interests. Good conversation led to dinner and finally a goodbye kiss (it is still under debate who kissed who). We spent the next two years adventuring and laughing. Our adventures took us to the forests and national parks of Washington State, where we rode nearly 300 miles on mountain bikes over five days. Once his residency ended in the summer of 2017, we packed up and headed north, and we settled into the beginnings of a blissful happily ever after.”

MON TA NA BOU N D “Being an adventurous couple, we wanted to do something different. Originally, we had a 250-person wedding planned at a traditional venue in our hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Once Covid hit, we didn’t want to risk our families’ and friends’ safety, so we hopped online and started googling elopement destinations. From there, we found Glacier National Park and our elopement photographer, Elsa, and everything clicked. We were so lucky to find such a wonderful person to document our elopement and couldn’t have asked for a better day!” What stands out as the best part of your day? “The magical landscape. Being from Florida, mountains and snow are foreign to us. Saying ‘I do’ at the Crown of the Continent, with just the two of us laughing and smiling, was truly a magical experience.” What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana elopement? “Find a local photographer! “In 2013, my sister’s husband, Scott, wanted to set me up with his cousin, David. I wouldn’t agree to a date until I did a little investigating. While stalking David on Facebook, I started to take note of his really cute friend. (Sorry Davey, you know I love you!) I asked Scott about him and he told me, ‘That is Kyle Madden, and he is untouchable.’ Fast forward five years to 2018. One night I get a call from Scott, attempting to set me up again. But this time, it was with the ‘untouchable’ Kyle Madden. Scott was screaming on the phone for me to come meet Kyle on their family vacation in California. I was hesitant, and said I would think about it. Three days before the trip, I decided to go for it. I went on the vacation, spent four days with Kyle, and the rest is history. Because it was a 2020 wedding, the atmosphere of love, community and celebration was the best part of the day. Everyone was grateful for the opportunity to be together again and to celebrate something as beautiful as a marriage. The timing of the event felt right even during the difficult times. Throughout the day, Kyle and I had multiple moments just for us that I will always remember and cherish. The day was a constant adrenaline rush, and having time together allowed us to take a breath, pause, and then really enter in. Also, we wanted our recessional after the ceremony to feel fun and more like us. So we picked one of Kyle’s favorite songs and danced back down the aisle as husband and wife! It was honestly so much fun and definitely set the tone for dancing later that evening!”

Brooke + Joe “Joe and I met at a Montana State University barn dance. I entrusted him (who was a mutual friend I’d just met) with my grandmother’s ring while I went dancing with a friend. After the dance, I completely forgot about the ring and went outside to cool down. Joe, concerned that I was leaving, ran after me to return the ring. We started chatting, and after seven years of dating, Joe proposed. Covid is the reason we had our dream wedding. Six weeks before our date, our downtown ceremony and reception venues canceled on us due to the pandemic. Our family agreed to host it instead on our property, and our amazing families and planner, Katalin Green, were devoted to completely redesigning the whole day. We couldn’t have imagined it to turn out more perfectly than it did.” What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana wedding? “Every day in Montana is magical! No matter the weather or challenges you face along the way, it will be the most wonderful day of your life. Some of the best advice we received is to take a moment, just the two of you, to appreciate it all. It goes by so quickly, so take it all in before the moment passes.”

Cultivating their farms with love and care, Montana’s flower farmers are an integral part of the thriving local wedding industry. By Sara Gilman

“The land is the best mirror we have of ourselves,” shares Dylan Fishman of Bozeman’s Foxglove Flower Farm, co-owner with fiancé Alyssa Stewart. And for the flower farmers of Southwest Montana, that mirror’s reflection is quite clear. It takes but one walk through the whimsical flower fields framed in mountains and blowing grasses to see the expression of their labors: love. Love for the land, for the process and the harvest, and a love for the community that is cultivated through flower farming.

Florists prefer working with local farmers, too. And it’s no wonder. These local blooms travel a few short miles to florist’s shops, in great contrast to the epic mileage logged for conventionally distributed flowers grown all over the world. Packaged flowers are typically flown to international trading warehouses, sold, and flown again to their country of destination. “We often had to purchase 30 to 50 percent more volume when buying [conventionally grown] flowers,” Alexis says of her time working with a florist. Due to the distance stems travel over the course of one to two weeks, petals are often already fading by the time they get to shops. More concerning, perhaps, is the toxic chemical preservatives added to hold the shelf life of stems on their journey.

Growing flowers may seem like a magical life, and at times it certainly is. However, Lauren Lenz and Alexis Bressler of Calliope Flowers clarify that “farming is hard work,” as they laugh with me over hot teas in winter on a Zoom chat, months after their farm was photographed. Reflecting on their labors of the past year – the risk Belgrade farmer, Fiona Buckley of Rathvinden Farm explains, of the deadly subzero temperatures and the reality of the capital “Florists appreciate working with our flowers because they are required to purchase flower stock almost a year in advance – they chemical-free, so they don’t have to wear gloves or worry about admit they don’t just frolic around in poppy fields all day. “Adam and I are both East Coast natives who made our ways – separately – to Denver and met swiping right on Bumble just over four years ago. We were both in our early 30s and knew pretty quickly that we had found someone special. Our first ‘I love you’ was on a plane, which is very fitting for us. Once Covid hit, large events were out of the question for a while, but we didn’t want to wait to get married and start building a family together. We never had a dream for a big wedding, but had planned on one for our families. Covid gave us the perfect excuse to embrace doing something more ‘on brand’ for us – a destination elopement! An adventure elopement was an obvious choice for us. We love Colorado and the Rocky Mountains but wanted to go somewhere that neither of us had been – some place we could discover together. Montana had long been on both of our bucket lists and had the added benefit of still being the Rocky Mountains with an ‘at home’ Colorado backdrop. We were excited to just enjoy the day together and do what we normally would – explore! The entire day felt very intimate and low pressure. Getting married in a national park was a no-brainer for us because we are such avid outdoor enthusiasts and love to support America’s parks! Our photographer, Carrie, told us that Glacier National Park was rarely so still and quiet as it was on our wedding day. She was able to get great reflection shots that are stunning! I also decided not to go fully traditional and wore Danner red lace hiking boots and a boho hat.” What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana elopement? “Do it! Elope if you want to! I don’t have any regrets about having the exact day we wanted to have. At the end of the day, friends and family will be happy for you! Montana is a great choice because there’s so much to explore before and after the elopement. In addition to Glacier, we loved checking out the ski areas and also went on a romantic helicopter ride.” MONTANA BRIDE / montanabride.com

“We bumped into each other for the first time at Montana State University in the fall of 2014 while David was pursuing an engineering degree and I, nursing. I caught David’s eye when I started going to his college fraternity for social events. Our first date was with a group of friends at Chico Hot Springs, and a few weeks later we were official! Flash forward to after our graduations in 2018; I moved home to Northeastern Montana and David stayed in Bozeman. This began our season of a long-distance relationship that included countless FaceTime dates, phone calls, miles of flying and driving, and getaway weekends. The most recent was a trip to Maui in October 2020. While in Maui, we planned to chase waterfalls on the East side of the island. We parked the Jeep on the side of Hana Highway and began our hike through the Bamboo Forest. When we reached Na’ili’ili Haele Waterfall, David knelt down with a ring and proposed. There’s so much craze on Instagram that urges brides to have the trendiest, most post-worthy wedding. I think a lot of vendors and even the couples themselves forget that behind all of that, there is a sacred ceremony happening that unites two people for the rest of their lives. David and I tried to keep that in the forefront when planning our wedding. Each piece and decision was meaningful to us. There were just 82 days between when we got engaged and when we said ‘I do,’ which is super uncommon in 2021. At first I wondered if planning a wedding in less than three months was possible, but after the fact, I don’t think I would have wanted any more time! When all of our vendors gave us the green light, we became more confident in choosing January 9, 2021, as our date. I would relive our day without changing a single detail forever. It was truly the best day of my life. David and I professed our commitment to each other before God and our closest family and friends in the most beautiful area, and we threw a heck of a party afterward!”
