Welcome to the second issue of the all-new Montana Bride! It is an honor to bring you these pages – pages that represent not just our blood, sweat and tears, but those of the vendors, the brides (and grooms) and their families.

Brides choose the state of Montana to host their weddings from all across the United States, Canada, and beyond. Case in point: last year’s comeback issue went out to 37 different states by online order. If you’re considering Montana for your wedding or elopement, take the advice from the brides featured here: don’t think any longer – just DO IT.

And their advice comes with good reason. We aren’t coined “The Last Best Place” for nothing. The views and skies speak for themselves. But what you’ll find that puts Montana over the top is its people.

Among Montana’s amazing people are the wedding vendors who work harder than any other industry. Who give up the coveted summer months to spend it with you – on the best day of your life. Who will do everything it takes (and then some) to make your day in Montana perfect

We are deeply proud of the beauty in this issue. We are proud of the creativity of the vendors, and of their talents – and we’re honored to support and highlight the work of these incredible people – many of whom we are grateful to have in the Montana Bride Vendor Collective, where you can find the very best of the best (see them all on page 126).

It is called “The Last Best Place” for a reason; come and visit us here in Big Sky Country, and you’ll see why.

Nice + Tyl

“Tyler and I met when he was 18 and I was 16. I was floating down a river with friends in Needles, CA, when he came by on a wakeboard and splashed our raft. The boat pulling him released the rope so he got stuck floating down the river with me and my girlfriends. We convinced him and his friend to come to game night at our family’s house that night.

We had known each other for a while, but we did not reconnect until I was in nursing school in Michigan, and Tyler was beginning his firefighting career in California. We had a long-distance relationship for one and a half years, and then I moved to California the weekend I passed my nursing boards in 2018.”

THE PROPOSAL

“On August 5, 2020, we bought our forever home with four acres in Southern California. We were so excited for the next chapter in our lives! We went to get pictures of the ‘sold’ sign with our family at the new property, when Tyler got down on one knee and proposed. Little did I know, when we went back to our house, a surprise engagement party was waiting for me.”

What stands out as the best part of your day?

“During cocktail hour, we stepped away from the party, went to a cabin and sat on the porch steps. We watched and listened to our guests celebrate the day. We were emotional and so grateful for all of our closest friends and family who traveled to Montana for our wedding. We were in absolute awe.”

WEDDING

NICOLE’S ADVICE

“Take a moment and step away to be with your new husband or wife. Take in the day in that moment because it goes by so fast. Enjoy your first cocktail alone together. Also, when you’re planning, always keep each other in check and remember this is about the two of you, no one else. Trust me, it all comes together.”

12 montanabride.com / MONTANA BRIDE

PERFECT MOMENT

“During our ceremony, I asked my now mother-inlaw to say a prayer. Our officiant asked all of our guests if they would circle around and join us. It was so emotional. ‘The Blessing’ by Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes was playing in the background with the sun breaking through the clouds, as if God and our lost loved ones were right there watching over us.”

LEXI + COLIN

“Colin and I first started dating in the summer of 2015. We met casually in 2013 when I was a lifeguard at the local country club and he would bring his nephews to swim. We were only acquaintances for a few years due to our age difference (Col is four years older than I am), and he was going to school in Bozeman at that time. When I graduated from high school, Colin had moved back to Butte to pursue a teaching degree. But our paths realigned: I was still working as a lifeguard that summer and he was still bringing his nephews to swim. He asked me to go on a date, and I said yes (of course). We dated for five years before getting engaged in Kona, Hawaii, on a family vacation. Through our relationship we have both graduated college, found wonderful careers as a teacher and nurse, bought a house, adopted two amazing dogs, and have been blessed with the best families we could ever ask for. We have spent the last six years together, experienced some of the best and worst things life has to offer, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I can’t wait to see what the future has to offer us as husband and wife.”

17MONTANA BRIDE / montanabride.com WEDDING

EXTRAORDINARY MOMENTS

“We were blessed with two of Colin’s brothers as his best men and his sister and my sister as my maids of honor. During their speeches I experienced every emotion. At one point, Colin and I were crying because we were laughing so hard and then we were crying because of the kind and loving words that were coming our way. It really sunk in at that moment we were husband and wife – we were surrounded by the best people in our lives and it was extraordinary.”

Tell us how you made your wedding unique.

“When people think of ‘unique’ or ‘out of the ordinary’ they automatically picture new color schemes, uncommon flowers, etc. When we were planning our wedding, our whole thought process revolved around the fact that we wanted this day to be timeless. We wanted something that we could look back on in years to come and have our jaws drop every time. So ultimately, our go-to colors became black and white. Early on, Colin told me he wanted to look like James Bond, so I rolled with it. The black on black, pops of white, and the greenery accents tied so perfectly into the barn. We chose not to do boutonnieres, simply because we didn’t find them necessary. I chose the black and white anemones because to me they are bold, flawless, and again, timeless. We didn’t do anything just because we had to or because it was the norm; we did things the way that would best describe us as a couple. The venue we got married at was beautiful, and I wanted something different than the normal arches that are typically seen at weddings. My amazing florist had the idea to build flower arches from the ground up. It came together so effortlessly, and I was blown away.

Another unique thing we chose together was our guest book. We had gone back and forth about the traditional guest books when we heard about a company called After The Tone. This company sends you a rotary phone that has a recorder inside. Each guest picks up the phone and leaves you a voicemail to wish you well. After the wedding, you return the phone and they send you not only a digital copy of the recordings, but also a vinyl record pressed with the recordings. This is something that has become so special to our hearts. It has the recordings of so many of our loved ones’ voices, and it will be something that we will cherish forever!

I was 100 percent adamant about having a late-night snack at the wedding. Colin and I had thrown some ideas back and forth but we ultimately decided on pizza. Who doesn’t love pizza? Especially after a night of drinking and dancing! We chose Rosa’s Pizza out of Belgrade because Colin has a giant soft spot in his heart (I should probably say his stomach) for Rosa’s. He and his friends enjoyed many nights eating Rosa’s during college, so it was the perfect fit, and everyone loved it!”

“Not everything will go perfectly, and that is okay. Actually, that should be preferred because everything that you didn’t plan will sweep you away and you will be so happy. For example, Colin and I never even thought of practicing our first dance (we also have no background in any sort of formal dancing). Why didn’t I think to do this? No clue. I remember him saying to me, ‘What do we do?’ and I responded with, ‘lets just wing it, like we always do.’ And it was perfectly imperfect in every way. I guess what I am trying to say is that no one expects your day to be perfect except you. There will be hiccups here and there, and there will be things that come up that you would never have possibly thought of or jotted down on the never-ending list of wedding to-dos, but everything will be okay. Go with the flow, wing it when you need to, enjoy the day, and don’t forget to look at your new husband or wife and remember why you are doing what you are doing, because when it comes down to it, this is your day to celebrate your love, and that is all that matters!”

ALAYNA + TAYLOR

“We met seven years ago. I was bartending at a country club in Georgia where my now husband was a member. It was my first day of work, and from the moment we met, he told his friends that he would marry me. It really was love at first sight for both of us.”

FIND YOUR VIBE

“I didn’t focus too much on having a specific color scheme, instead, I started picking things out and let it evolve from there. That made it fun because there were a lot of mixed patterns and colors and they all came together beautifully. I wanted things to be unique, boho, and simple, and everything we picked out worked perfectly to fit that vibe.”

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE

“A Montana wedding is going to be beautiful no matter what, so don’t stress. That’s one of the amazing things about getting married in Montana – you could literally have no decor at all and it would still be breathtaking.”

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

9 TIPS TO A SUCCESSFUL ELOPEMENT

Are you ready to elope to Montana, but not sure where to start? With the help of photographer Presley Gray, we’ve rounded up our top nine tips to help your elopement succeed.

Choose your date and photographer. Because the photographer is often the highest priority vendor for an elopement, you should reach out to your favorite photographer first, then choose your elopement date based on his or her availability, if you have that flexibility. We always recommend hiring locally, and our Vendor Collective is a great place to find amazing vendors! (See the #MBV Collective on page 126!)

Get your national park permit and passes, and apply for your marriage license. National park rules and regulations are constantly evolving, so keep up with the latest info at nps.gov, and be sure to apply for your national park wedding permit early. Also, apply online for a marriage license from the county that you are getting married in.

Decide your style. Whether it’s classic, boho, western, or modern, picking the style you love will bring your photos to life. Don’t forget that the groom’s suit can add to the vibe, as well as printed materials, a hat, jewelry, vow books, and other fun details or accessories.

Be okay with crazy weather conditions. Montana’s weather is unpredictable. Your day is going to be your day – meaning it will be perfect no matter rain, snow or sunshine. Some of the best photos happen on stormy days.

Play up the wind. An elopement in the mountains of Montana is sure to have wind. Dresses with movement and long veils are made for wind. You’ll love the life that it gives your photos.

Don’t forget the bouquet. Most people underestimate the power of flowers. Consider your color scheme and style, and make sure you get that bouquet order in.

Get a cake. Who says you can’t have a cake when you elope? There’s nothing better than cutting a cake on a mountaintop after you have married the love of your life.

Bring backup. Montana weather can turn on a dime, so it’s always a good idea to have a coat and shoes you can get muddy or dirty. A blanket and an umbrella are also likely to come in handy!

Relax and have fun! It’s your wedding day, so don’t stress. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or off-road adventuring to your elopement destination, you chose to elope for the experience and the Montana scenery. Sit back and enjoy it!

M+EGAN & B+RAYDON

“We met at a local clothing boutique 10 years ago, went on one date and then parted ways. Several years later, I moved back to Montana and there was Braydon, standing in front of me in line at a local bagel shop. We went on our second date six years after our first, and the rest is history! Surrounded by our loved ones on the Fourth of July, Braydon asked me to marry him at my aunt and uncle’s home, located at the base of the Beartooth Mountains.

We were married in June of 2020, just after the United States opened back up from the COVID-19 shutdown. We hosted a small, intimate wedding, which was a change from the large celebration we originally planned. Fast forward one year: we wanted to properly celebrate our first year of marriage, so we threw the ultimate disco-themed party. Cassie and her team at Better To Gather transformed the Pub Station into our disco dreams, taking elements from famous 70s clubs like Studio 54 and creating a glitz and glam extravaganza. Every guest dressed in their 70s best to groove the night away. It was perfect, and we can’t thank our vendors enough for bringing our vision to life!”

RECEPTION

What stands out as the best part of the day?

“Seeing family and friends we hadn’t seen for more than a year. In a time of separation, it was beautiful to be gathered again.”

What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana wedding?

“Book the wedding, support the Montana vendors, and trust that you’re in some of the best hands in the wedding industry! Montana knows how to throw a party – we have so many gems throughout the state; there’s something for everyone. We cannot say enough about our vendor team – all the way from the hair to the decorations –they fulfilled our disco dreams in ways we didn’t know were possible. We’re forever grateful to them all!”

“We met in a grocery store where I used to work during nursing school in 2015. Ian came in every other weekend for groceries. Six months later, he got the courage to ask me out.

We had a micro-wedding in Iceland in 2019. Each year since then we have gone on a trip for our anniversary and have pictures taken at each location. In 2020, we went to the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2021, we were in Montana at Glacier National Park. We have a place in mind for 2022, and can’t wait to celebrate our third anniversary there …”

THE PROPOSAL

“We travel often and planned a trip to Rome, Italy, in December of 2018. The afternoon after we arrived, we went to the Appian Way, the oldest road in the world, for a walk. Ian kneeled down and proposed, as a photographer took pictures; Ian had hired him, and he was pretending to be one of the visitors at the sight. We then spent the rest of the vacation in Italy, our engagement-moon.”

45MONTANA BRIDE / montanabride.com VOW RENEWAL

What stands out as the best part of your day?

“I found Amber on Instagram, as I love her photography style. We talked and planned the anniversary shoot for the Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park. We met at 430am; it was cold and dark, but it was amazing once we got to the location. The sun was coming out and there weren’t any people around – it was a perfect day.”

What advice would you give to brides planning their Montana elopement?

“It’s your day so make sure you take care of yourself, relax and enjoy. Be sure to reach out and communicate with your photographer and videographer. Trust me, they are a vital part of your day, so be sure to listen to them because this is what they do for a living!”

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE

“Remember this day is about you and your person – no one else! It is so easy to get wrapped up in family and friends’ expectations, opinions, or thoughts, but try to focus on what you and your partner want because truly nothing else matters. We met during Oregon State’s Dad’s Weekend in November of 2016, during our senior year of college. My dad and I were hanging out at a local college bar when he took a cab back to his hotel for the night. A group of friends convinced me to stay out longer. Later that night, Cadis introduced himself at the bar and insisted that we sing karaoke together and we’ve been together ever since!”

THE PROPOSAL

“On July 15, 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, Cadis took me out fly fishing. Little did I know, I would catch a fiancé instead! He proposed to me on the Yellowstone River and had his family meet us at the riverbank to celebrate. They surprised us with a beautiful spread of treats, flowers, champagne, and my dad, who had driven all the way from the family farm in Northern California to be a part of the special day.”

WEDDING

ALL IN THE DETAILS

“We didn’t talk to each other the morning of the wedding, and the first time we saw each other was when I was at the end of the ceremony aisle. With the help of our vendors, we were able to combine our worlds: We had California and Montana-shaped cookies to represent our home states, we hung our college pennant flags, and the venue served rice from my family’s farm in Northern California. We served Montana brews with mountain views while guests took home California poppy seeds to plant and ‘watch love grow.’ We are suckers for a good hot dog, so we had the DJ play ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ to set the scene for our late night snack. To wrap up the night, and to represent both of our western upbringings, glow sticks and cowboy hats were passed around the dance floor! It was a celebration of love and togetherness. In a lot of ways, our wedding was a reunion for all of our friends – friends we hadn’t seen in years, since college, or since the pandemic started. It was really cool to see our friend groups come together and have a blast.”

TIPS FROM THE BRIDE “If the majority of your guests are coming in from out of town or out of state, I recommend hosting your rehearsal somewhere unique and off the beaten path. For us, this was the Sacajawea Hotel in Three Forks. We had a lovely cocktail hour on their historic front porch before dinner, speeches, and dessert inside. If possible, invite your key wedding vendors! We loved having our photographer there, and now we have special photos to remember our last day together as fiancés! Because we are both close with our siblings, we decided to mix it up and have them give speeches at the rehearsal dinner instead of the reception, which was a hilarious and heartfelt way for our guests to get a little glimpse into our upbringings as well as our relationship.” –Lauren

WHITEFISH, MONTANA

Mikaela + Jh

“I met Jonathon in 2014 while working at Jimmy John’s in his hometown. I was intrigued by him from the moment he came in to fill out his application. After asking around, I found out he was single and made desperate attempts to flirt with him. I eventually got up the courage to ask him out on a date: I wrote on his sandwich asking him to dinner. That was the first of many dates to come.”

THE PROPOSAL

“I planned to propose to Mikaela on a snowboarding trip to Switzerland. Snowboarding is one of our favorite activities, so it only seemed right that I propose doing something we love. Mikaela helped pick out her ring during a visit to Whitefish. We were walking through the downtown shops when she saw the ring at Stephen Isley Jewelry. Shortly after we were home from that trip, I attempted to have the ring re-created by a local jeweler. I received it a week before we were planning to leave for Switzerland, but it turned out not to be what I was looking for. I quickly called Stephen Isley in a panic to see if the original ring was still there. Thankfully, it was still available, and they overnighted it to me! At Laax Mountain Resort in Switzerland, midway down a ski run, we sat and watched paragliders make their way down the mountain, and that’s when I asked her to marry me.”

What stands out as the best part of your day?

“I loved that Jonathon and I spent so much of our wedding day together. We got coffee in the morning and listened to live jazz. After our first look, we didn’t leave each other’s side the rest of the day. Having a low-stress wedding allowed us to take in every moment. We had a blast taking photos before and after the ceremony, and our photographer, Amber, was the ultimate hype woman. After our dinner reception, we went for a walk and reflected on how amazing our day was. It was so special to have our closest people witness us become husband and wife.”

ELOPEMENT GOALS

“Our wedding represented us in every way possible. We didn’t want to fuss over the details – especially planning from Illinois. The goal was to have an intimate winter ceremony surrounded by our immediate family and closest friends, with a laid-back reception. The day after our wedding was just as much fun – almost the entire group went to Whitefish Mountain Resort and spent the day riding fresh powder.”

“Go with your gut. Don’t add anything that you don’t want or that adds stress to your day. It’s about the two of you and your wedding day should reflect that. Working in bridal hair, I hear so many brides say they wish they would have chosen to elope. I took that advice and wouldn’t change a single thing about our day.”

“We met randomly on a trip to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, in 2013. I was traveling back from Miami with girlfriends, when we decided to stop and celebrate St. Patty’s Day in Columbia. Ryan was visiting a close friend that same weekend. During our celebrations, we ran into each other, and it turned out our friends were mutual friends. We ended up spending the whole evening talking in a corner and really hit it off. Before the night ended, I told Ryan I had a college boyfriend and it was great meeting him – he was heartbroken. But I had formed a huge crush and eagerly became Facebook friends with him the next day. I spent the next six months stalking his page for more about him, but he never posted anything. About six months later, I ran into one of Ryan’s friends. After chatting and figuring out that I was now single, his friend immediately texted him the news. He only waited a day before asking me out on a date. We spent the whole day together hiking and hanging out. According to Ryan, I ended the date with the worst hug ever!”

THE PROPOSAL

“On November 11, 2020, Ryan surprised me with the sweetest proposal at Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, VA. I thought I was meeting him for a work event, but instead he surprised me in the courtyard! Our best friends helped him pull it off and were there to film the whole thing! We were finally getting married! Only days after getting engaged, I entered to win a dream Glacier National Park elopement from Montana Bride on Instagram. After the sweetest essay detailing our love story was sent in from our dear friend, Madden McGraw, we won!”

How did you make your day specific to you?

“What made our untraditional elopement so special was that we kept some tradition in the process. We didn’t see each other the day of, at all! The first time Ryan saw me, I was walking down a pebbled mountain ‘aisle’ with bouquet in hand. It was magical. It was just us, no family or friends, at Sun Point overlooking St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park. We spent the rest of our wedding day in awe of the park’s beauty! There was something so special about it just being us – we were able to talk to each other and love on each other the whole day. We were able to really enjoy one another’s company and celebrate our love in our own wedding-high bubble. It was simply magical. Later that fall, we held a post-elopement reception and were able to celebrate our love story with family and friends. Because of the elopement, we had the opportunity to spend quality time with our loved ones without feeling stressed that we weren’t spending the entire evening hand in hand. Eloping and having a party later is the way to go! Thank you Montana Bride for making our dreams come true!”

What stands out as the best part of your day?

“Eloping without family or friends was made so easy by all the sweet vendors who made us feel like family. Lynn Stoll, the owner of Montana Bride, who made our elopement dreams come true by organizing the giveaway, was able to come visit me! She was a ray of sunshine the morning of our wedding day, and I will always remember her kindness. Every vendor, from Mum’s Flowers to Best Day Officiants, made us feel like part of the family. Every single one of our vendors loves what they do and will make your special day even more special. We can’t sing their praises enough!”

Bhany + Tyl

“Tyler and I met in October of 2013. He was living in southern Missouri and working on a ranch, and I was in my first year of nursing school. Both of us had spent time at the same college but our paths never crossed while enrolled. We met a year after Tyler graduated. He was home for the alumni rodeo at Southeastern Oklahoma State University where I was finishing my nursing degree. Even though he was only home for a few days and returning to Missouri, there was something special between the two of us from that first night. We dated long distance until I graduated from nursing school, and then we moved to Iowa. Tyler had a job opportunity there, and I chose to take nursing to the midwest. Although it was beautiful country and even better people, the memories of home and family drew us back to Texas. The last seven years have been full of traveling to rodeos, meeting new people, raising animals, hunting, fishing, and loving one another.”

THE PROPOSAL

“It was October 2020 and we were traveling to Colorado for an elk hunt with our closest friends. After dating for seven years, and I was starting to think we’d just be the couple that dated forever. Knowing my love for fall foliage and the mountains, we took a drive to scout for elk. The drive took us through some of the most beautiful yellow aspens, so we decided to stop and admire the scenery. After posing for a few pictures, he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.”

THE RINGS

“I wanted something special for Tyler’s ring; something that resonated with who we are, and what we like to do. I found a ring made of antler, and I knew instantly that was it. My engagement ring and band are irreplaceable. They belonged to Tyler’s late mother, Kaye. She passed from breast cancer when Tyler was young, so I never got the chance to meet her, but now I carry a little part of her with me. When Tyler proposed he didn’t know my ring size. When he slipped it on my finger it fit perfectly without any adjustment. We were comforted in that moment as if she were giving us her blessing from heaven.”

65MONTANA BRIDE / montanabride.com
WEDDING

MAKE IT YOURS

“We wanted to keep our wedding intimate and make it about our unity. We chose not to have a wedding party and truly enjoyed just standing beside one another at the altar. We had a small wedding of 50 people and for us, it was perfect.

For our wedding favors, we had a small branding iron made with our brand and initial. We used that to brand leather working gloves for our guests’ gifts. We thought the gloves would be unique and something that wouldn’t go to waste. They were a huge hit and there weren’t any left that night. Now we get pictures from our friends showing the gloves being put to good use.

Hands down the best part of the reception was the band. They stole the show. I had such a hard time choosing entertainment. I weighed all of the pros and cons of DJ versus live band and kept thinking of how I envisioned the night and music. I searched through multiple wedding sites and couldn’t find a band that fit our genre and budget. I finally stumbled upon Fool’s Gold out of Bozeman. Because I was planning a wedding from out of state, I relied heavily on social media and reviews. I can’t say I was one hundred percent confident when booking; all the insight I had was from a few clips on their web site. However, after our first contact I knew they were the band for us! Dan was extremely wholesome and easy to talk to. When I say they blew our expectations out of the water, they truly did! Their music definitely made the night. They were so interactive and had the dance floor packed all night. I can’t thank them enough. I would, hands down, always recommend a live band. I wish we lived closer to see them play again.”

What stands out as the best part of your day?

“Seeing Tyler at the altar waiting for me was more than I ever imagined. It sounds silly but that first glimpse of one another just takes your breath away. Standing at the aisle with him was as if time had stopped and I felt weightless. I had waited for that day for seven years and it truly felt magical. We both couldn’t control our tears through the entire ceremony as much as we tried. We felt extremely fortunate to have such an amazing support group of friends and family. They traveled from all across the U.S. to watch us devote ourselves to one another. Friends came in from Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, California, Indiana, and more, just to be there with us. That week brought all of our favorite people together and it was memorable watching them all become friends. We realized it was the only time in our lives that we would ever have everyone together in one place, and to watch them hit it off and enjoy each other was a true gift.”

What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana wedding?

“If you are considering Montana, don’t think twice! I wish I could relive the week we spent in the mountains again and again. It wasn’t just a special time for us. All of our friends and family thoroughly enjoyed themselves and continue to thank us for picking such a beautiful place. Everyone can’t wait to go back and witness the beauty of Montana and Glacier again.”

“Terry and I met through social media and mutual friends. As cliché as it sounds, it was love at first sight! January 19, 2019, was our first date. We are truly best friends! As a couple, we hobby in photography. One afternoon, we were doing a photoshoot in a local Georgia State Park with one of our best friends. While my back was turned, Terry assumed the position on one knee and asked me to be his wife. Our best friend got it all on video as she was in on the secret! The ring was custom made, and it took him months to design.

Our wedding was special because it was just us. It was simple, and without frills. It was without invitations, a wedding party, and was just the basics. Most importantly, we had each other. We both enjoy the outdoors and to have our wedding in one of the most coveted and beautiful places on earth was a dream come true! The best part of the day was the first look. Our first look was literally on the continental divide with snow flurries. Does it get any better than that? Terry cried like a baby!”

“We hung out for the first time as singles at brunch with mutual friends and we clicked almost instantly. We spent every day and night together after that. It’s our little joke that we met and I never left. Quite literally speaking! I stayed at his place for months; going back to mine only for clothes. I knew pretty quickly he was the one I would marry. I remember Steph, my best friend and matron of honor, telling me I should have dated Andy back when we barely knew each other, more than 10 years ago. He claims he got my number at a bar one night during our post-college years, and I never texted him back. I can neither confirm nor deny this! Fast forward a few years, and we were both in Steph and Kyle’s wedding, but neither of us were single or looking. My, how timing is a funny thing. Here we are, seven years later, now married to each other!”

79MONTANA BRIDE / montanabride.com COVER STORY
Ab + Aw

THE PROPOSAL

“We got engaged during Covid in July 2020. We wanted to get away, and summertime in Northern Michigan was calling us. Andy planned most of our trip, and while I hoped it was going to be the one, I fully convinced myself it wasn’t because there was no way on earth he had a ring in his possession. Our first stop was Ludington, MI, a quaint historic beach town. We checked into our charming bed and breakfast (yes, in our mid-30s, we are those people and proud of it – we love B&Bs!). We went to dinner, then found a place on the beach of Lake Michigan to watch the sunset. Oddly enough, we pretty much had the entire shoreline to ourselves. We drank wine, took selfies, and I somehow forgot about wanting to be proposed to. Then at peak sunset, while we were standing in the water, he called me ‘Abigail’ and I honestly do not recall a word he said after that – I went into a state of shock. I don’t know how he got that ring, how he hid it for five months, where he put it during dinner, or how he managed to find the most beautiful diamond ring I’d ever seen. It was better than all the photos I had sent to him on Instagram (lol!). The proposal surpassed all of my hopes and dreams. Leaving the beach, we listened to ‘All I Ask of You’ by Phantom of the Opera, which we chose for our first dance song. The rest of our road trip was bliss. It was the best weekend of our lives. There is no better feeling than being newly engaged – aside from being newlywed of course!”

Tell us more about your wedding day.

“Having a destination wedding in beautiful Montana was a unique experience for everyone! We planned the entire weekend ourselves, from the small details and decor to the logistics. It was cool to see it all come together. We fell in love with the mountains and valleys of Montana, and our western welcome party was a blast. The music, outfit changes, food; it was one heck of a weekend. The invitations were fun, flirty and western, and they set the tone perfectly for our wedding. Our guests loved them!”

What stands out as the best part?

“The entire weekend! Being in the moment – 30 mph winds and all! The stress magically faded away. When we saw all of our planning and hard work come to life – it was such an awesome feeling. We loved being outside with the fresh air and gorgeous backdrop. There’s truly nothing like it. We had the best team of vendors, and it was such a blast celebrating with family and friends. We belted out Garth Brooks’ ‘Friends in Low Places’ at the top of our lungs with hats and boots on while having the time of our lives on the dance floor. Those little moments will be cherished forever.”

ABBY’S ADVICE

“Enjoy the process and every step of the way. It can be very stressful planning a wedding on your own and a destination one at that. While it was so fun to plan and choose all the details, we would recommend considering a wedding planner. But we wouldn’t change a thing, we both thought it was absolutely perfect!”

Nalie + Sam

“Sam and I met after being set up on a blind date. We share a simple joy for the outdoors: running, nordic skiing, biking, and hiking. Sam works as a mechanical engineer, and I am a doctor. We split our time between Park City, UT, and Anaconda, MT, where I work at a hospital in each location. Cody, the dog, gets to come along for all of the adventures too, so of course he was the ring bearer for the wedding! The vibe we wanted was laid back, simple, and beautiful. At Sage Lodge, we didn’t need many decorations because the surrounding scenery was enough! We like simple beauty and didn’t want the day to feel too overdone or formal.

Our guests arrived Friday and departed Sunday afternoon. They stayed together in two ranch houses at Sage Lodge, which allowed for us to be together the entire weekend and provided a home base to explore Paradise Valley. We were able to spend quality time with everyone, which isn’t something that is feasible with a large group. Small weddings also mean you can splurge on really good food! I underestimated how amazing it would be to have friends from all parts of our lives together in one place. Having a small, but close, group made it feel like we could be ourselves and didn’t have the pressure of being the center of attention for a huge party.”

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Khre + Kayla

“Kayla and I met each other at a point in our lives when we thought we had it all figured out. We are small-town, southern girls from Nashville, and we were both checking all of the boxes to fit that narrative. But we crossed paths and it was like, ‘ohhh, that’s what it’s supposed to feel like.’ So we ditched the cookiecutter life we had both laid out in front of us and went for it. Five years later we are unapologetically living our best, most authentic lives and couldn’t be happier.”

PROPOSAL

Tell us your proposal story.

Kathrine’s POV: “We were planning our next big trip (we are trying to visit all of the national parks), and decided Glacier National Park was the winner. We booked our flight, and in that moment I thought, ‘this is it.’ I want to adventure with this woman for the rest of my life; why not ask her on our biggest adventure yet? So literally the next day I bought a ring, and started reaching out to photographers. I found Megan and fell in love with her style, and she luckily had the date open and was freaking awesome at helping me come up with the plan: sunset proposal at Big Bend on the big rock. Now that it was planned, I had to keep it a secret for over a month.

We spent the day of the proposal taking in the absolutely insane beauty of Glacier. Pictures just don’t do it justice. I suggested we grab a six-pack and head back into the park to watch the sunset. I sneakily grabbed the ring and put it in my pocket. We cozied up on a blanket, sipping local brews, and waited patiently for a family to finish up their photoshoot. I was only slightly freaking out that they were never going to wrap it up, lol. But once the big rock was clear, I hopped up and said, ‘it’s ours now’! So we climbed up, and I had a whole speech, but was too nervous to get it all out. I did manage to remember to get down on one knee, and bam, she said yes! A lot of happy tears fell. Best day ever!”

What are your wedding plans?

“An elopement is in our future. Vegas, baby! No fuss, just fun!”

What do you love most about one another?

“Our genuine desire to spend quality time together. Simple as that. You would think after five years we would be over spending every possible opportunity we can with one another. But even after all this time we both can’t shake the feeling of it being too good to be true. So we hold on tight.”

Taylor + T

“Tyson and I met in November of 2018 in Billings. I had just moved there, so for our first date he gave me a tour around the city. We ended up talking and laughing for hours, and it felt like we had known each other our whole lives. After our second date at a local brewery, he told his roommate that I was ‘the one.’ From then on, we were pretty much inseparable. Over the past few years, we have started our careers, bought our first house, adopted a dog, and enjoyed exploring this beautiful state we live in! We always say how lucky we are to have each other, and after several years, life still seems too good to be true.”

THE PROPOSAL

“Tyson proposed the day before Thanksgiving. We were going to my parent’s home for dinner that night. I’m a school teacher, so naturally I was wearing a T-shirt with a giant turkey on it. He knew I would not enjoy being proposed to with a turkey shirt on, so he had to nonchalantly pressure me into changing! Once we got to my parent’s, we all started talking about what we were thankful for during the past year. Tyson kept saying ‘pass’ every time it was his turn. After many skipped turns, he finally decided it was time. In front of my family, he expressed his love for me and the future he imagined from the day we met. Thank goodness my sister recorded it because I was so excited that I couldn’t remember anything he said!”

WEDDING

A FAMILY AFFAIR

“My grandpa remodels cars. We used one of his favorites at our ceremony and for our photos. My dad and I drove up to the ceremony in it, and afterward, Tyson and I drove off as husband and wife. This was a touching and sentimental way to show my dad giving me away and Tyson and I starting our lives together. My uncle is like a second father to me and we chose him to be our officiant. He was the perfect choice, as he is very close to both of us and added the level of personal touch we wanted for our ceremony. My sister and her husband recorded a version of ‘I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You’ that played as my parents walked me down the aisle. We also had vintage pictures frames with our families wedding photos on display at our reception. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our families and having them represented at our reception meant a lot to both of us.”

What stands out as the best part of your day?

“Our first look was full of anticipation, excitement, and relief when we were finally able to hold each other. It was an indescribable feeling. Our photos from that moment truly capture our love for each other.”

What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana wedding?

“Work with your future spouse when planning and have open communication. Planning a wedding is a huge task and can feel daunting at times. Lean on each other when you feel overwhelmed or lost. Be clear with what vendors or aspects of the day are important to each of you, and compromise where you both feel comfortable. At the end of the day, it is your wedding and you should do what makes you both happy!”

Alexra + Max

“Max and I met the second day after I moved to Jackson Hole, WY. I was with a mutual friend at a lodge where hockey fans gathered before the local Friday night game. We were introduced that evening, which quickly led to many days together on the mountain skiing with friends, spontaneous adventures, and weekend trips to my family’s home in Montana. Max likes to say he fell in love with me the night of the hockey game as he remembers vividly that I wore a long maroon down jacket. I like to say I fell in love with him one day on the chairlift after skiing a handful of days together. We became inseparable – moving in together, getting to know both sides of the family, and surrounding our lives around our now two-year-old German shorthair pup.”

THE PROPOSAL

“Our plan was to hike to the Middle Teton in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, but instead we made it to the Saddle, which is just below the Middle. It was not a glamorous proposal by any means. We had two friends join us who knew it was going to happen, and I had a hunch. We were surrounded by a whirlwind of butterflies as Max got down on his knee to ask that we spend the rest of our lives together. We picked out the ring together in a local jewelry store on our way to dinner with friends. I knew I wanted a sapphire; my mom has a sapphire band, and my grandmother also wears a sapphire ring.”

“My aunt and uncle did a butterfly release at their wedding years ago, which was held on the front lawn of their Virginia home. I was the 6-year-old girl who had the honor of releasing the butterflies at the end of their ceremony. Ever since, I dreamt of releasing butterflies at my own wedding. I had my younger cousins release 200 butterflies into the sky that evening. Butterflies are a symbol of transformation and endless love.”

BAYLEE + JOSHUA

“We met in middle school; my maid of honor introduced us. We dated through high school but eventually broke up. Even though we didn’t work out as a couple at that time, we were best friends, and remained close for the next several years. After growing up and helping each other through some really hard times, we realized we wanted to be together for the rest of our lives.

I’m obsessed with Christmas. I wanted a wedding that reflected my love for the holiday, and getting married in December was a dream – it even snowed! Small, intimate weddings are so underrated! We had 20 guests, and we ate (they say you never get to eat), we hung out with everyone, and we got to spend time with each other. It was like a big family dinner with a dance party. We had fun details like a sugar cookie and hot cocoa bar that used my Mom’s cocoa recipe. The reception was relaxed, fun and everyone was vibing with each other. It was so special.”

What advice would you give to other brides planning a Montana wedding?

“When considering a photographer, look at the full portfolio of weddings they’ve done – not just what you see on Instagram or their web site. We loved our photographer and her style. Your photos will last a lifetime – don’t settle, and be thorough in your research! Remember this day is about you and your partner. Make sure the people in your bridal party are there to love and support you. Not everyone will be able to make it to your wedding, and that is Okay! Also, I highly recommend doing a boudoir shoot the day of. It made me feel so confident, beautiful and pampered.”

“We love to travel and visit national parks, so we knew we wanted to have a destination wedding. Whitefish was exactly what we were looking for! We not only got to spend our wedding day with our friends and family, but we were also able to enjoy Whitefish Lake and Glacier National Park with them all week. We had about 50 guests travel from Pennsylvania. The entire day was perfect! We loved the champagne boat cruise on Whitefish Lake because it gave us the opportunity to step away and just celebrate with each other. Our favorite part though, was dancing all night with our friends and family!”

5 PRO-TIPS TO GORGEOUS STYLING

From Planner Wild Montana Wedding

Do not spend every waking moment on Pinterest. Although Pinterest is a great place to get some initial inspiration, it can quickly lead you down a rabbit hole of indecision where nobody wants to go. Gather a few pins to hone in your style and color palette, and then walk away.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed with options, check out local Montana wedding planners and their designs. The best way to know what your wedding could actually look like is to look at past work. Partnering with a wedding planner can help ease your stress and help to find your wedding style.

When in doubt, check in with the two of you as a couple. We love adding elements to weddings that aren’t just cookie cutter design elements, but pieces that are unique to you and your story. Did you ride bikes on your first date? Then let’s have the seating chart be a vintage bike with its basket filled with place cards. Do you and your honey like spending time at your local coffee shop? Wonderful! You can have a coffee cart at your wedding with locally made coffee mugs for your guests. The sky’s the limit!

Mix and match the bridesmaid dresses. Stay within the same shade, and then mix and match the textures, prints, and styles of the dresses. Varied textures like velvet, satin, chiffon, and sequin dresses look really great when they’re together. Adding in one or two with print adds a dynamic look. Every member of your bride tribe is a different shape and size, so allowing them to find the style that works best for their body will make everyone happy. Give them their color and texture assignment, and let them do the rest. We recommend Birdy Grey and Revelry because they allow bridesmaids to shop by color or texture.

Rethink what you know about color palettes. Instead of narrowing yourself down to just “colors” (blush and ivory, for example), think in terms of color tones instead. There are several tones of blush and pinks that go well together. If you’re stuck, look for a color wheel online. The blush color wheel opens up so many shades of pink! We always suggest having one or two main color tones and then two more neutral tones to even out your wedding aesthetic.

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

How did you meet?

“We were set up on a blind date! Mason’s sister and my best friend were close friends, so when Mason first moved to San Francisco, they conspired to set the two of us up on a date. Mason picked the restaurant and set the date without me ever seeing his (non-existent) social media pages. Despite the jitters and awkwardness of meeting for the first time, sparks flew, the conversation never stopped, and we both knew we wanted to spend more time together. We fell in love touring the city and trying every restaurant and bottle of wine we could fit into our weekends together. I traveled extensively for work, so it was a big deal when Mason offered to start watching (our) dog, Charlie, while I was out of town. Two years passed, and before we knew it, Covid struck. The city of San Francisco shuttered its doors and we were on full lockdown approximately three months after moving in together – into a one-bedroom condo. Two humans and a 70-pound lapdog quarantining in a small space led to a lot of memories, and brought us much closer as a couple. Without the distraction of travel, we spent our nights talking about our future, and we spent our days doing what we could to get outside safely – primarily escaping the city on 40-mile gravel bike rides in the hills of Marin County. That crazy spring and summer of Covid restrictions helped us realize we could tackle anything together.”

THE PROPOSAL

“Like many brides, I thought a proposal was imminent for about three months before it actually happened, but it was the era of Covid, so all sense of time was strange. We planned a trip to visit Mason’s family in Vermont in September of 2020. The wildfires were raging in California, and we were cooped up inside our condo, unable to get outside because of the smoke. We had been quarantined because of San Francisco restrictions, so we took two Covid tests and got on a flight to Burlington, VT. Our plan was to spend two weeks working from his parents beautiful home outside of Stowe, VT, and enjoy the fresh air and outdoor space to roam. Those two weeks quickly passed and we extended our trip for another month – we had no rush to get back to the city. Little did I know, there had been multiple ‘possible’ proposal scenarios that had come and passed. Mason was waiting for that perfect moment when the fall colors erupt across the Northeast. After a hike to the top of Franconia Notch in New Hampshire did not elicit a proposal, I gave up hope of Mason popping the question on the trip. Soon after, a friend from San Francisco was in town to supposedly get drone footage of the covered bridges with the fall colors. Mason took us to a pond with the backdrop of Mount Mansfield on fire with fall color. When he dropped to one knee I burst into tears (who doesn’t?) and said, ‘WAIT, you’ve had the ring this whole time?!’ Needless to say, I said yes, and we are very thankful to have the entire moment captured via drone video.”

How did you make your wedding specific to you as a couple?

“Planning a wedding during Covid led to a lot of hard truths. If we wanted to get married in the (near-ish) future, it would likely be a wedding with some ‘edits.’ The guest list wouldn’t be as large, restrictions may have to be in place, etc. We knew we wanted our wedding to be a reflection of the two of us. We didn’t care about all of the traditional aspects of the day, but wanted to include those that spoke to who we were. It was important for us to have the people closest to us present – what we call our inner circle. It was the friends and family who have been intimately involved in our relationship as a couple. Those who have taken the time to get to know us and to love us. Our guest list was small, 55 people total, but it was mighty.

It was an easy decision to have our wedding in Montana. Mason spent five of his favorite years living in Montana attending Montana State University. The slopes of Bridger Bowl imprinted on him, and his love for Montana runs deep. His aunt and uncle live in Kalispell and have an absolutely stunning property with a view of Glacier National Park. They were beyond kind when they offered the use of their property to host our wedding day. It was the perfect backdrop to the most magical day of our lives. I had a vision to turn our tent into a secret garden that included over 60 feet of arbors that needed to be built to cover the tables. The entire family came together to ‘raise the arbor,’ which was an eight-hour affair, but it was worth it when Mum’s Weddings came in with the most beautiful greenery installations, and Jennifer Mooney Weddings’ team set up more than 300 candles. The tent was transformed into a glittering, candle-lit garden that felt like the most intimate dinner party you could imagine.”

What advice would you give brides planning a Montana wedding?

“DO IT. Montana is not only an absolutely beautiful location, but the people who live and work there are even more incredible. The vendors we had the pleasure of getting to work with were some of the hardest-working, kindest people I have ever met. They will take your vision and turn it into reality, and make you feel like family.

Be true to you as a couple when planning your day. It is very easy to get lost in the pressure from family or friends in what your day ‘should’ look like, but only the two of you know what will make you feel whole. Your wedding day is the one day where everyone present is there to celebrate your love and commitment to one another. Enjoy that moment and surround yourself with vendors who are happy to create the wedding of your dreams.”

’TIL DEATH

Do Us Pay

Never underestimate the power of tulle, pearls and your bride tribe! Ready for your bachelorette bash but not sure where to start? With tips from Kalispell planner SG Weddings & Events, you’ll be ready to throw a party that works for everyone, with a vibe that’s sure to make it fun.

119MONTANA BRIDE / montanabride.com
OPAL & OX PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILM
BACH BASH

Make it personal. Ultimately, this party is for the bride to celebrate her last weekend with her babes before the big day! So go to her for ideas on the vibe. Ask her specific questions about how grand or small she’d like the celebration to be and what specific things she’s dreamt of including. Even if it’s not exactly the type of weekend you would throw for yourself, make sure it is tailored to her.

Don’t over-schedule. This is the bride’s last weekend (or close to it) with her besties, so allow for time to just relax, enjoy conversation, and give extra time between each event. Let’s be honest, groups of ladies are rarely on time, so allow for at least 30 minutes prior to each event to be running behind schedule. No event or weekend is fun when there is stress caused by a too-tight timeline!

Create an experience for all guests. This can be hard because the bride has a tribe full of very different people, but the beauty is they all have one thing in common – her! Don’t hesitate to ask each guest

120 montanabride.com / MONTANA BRIDE

what their dream bachelorette party would look like. Chances are, even a small piece will align and you’ll be able to create space for everyone to have fun and enjoy themselves. You’re all there for the bride, so it’s going to be a blast no matter what!

Let go of traditional expectations. Traditionally, the bachelorette party is known as the bride’s last night of freedom – a time to party and go crazy before she is tied to one person for the rest of her life. But let’s be real, this night should be about celebrating the beautiful bride-to-be and the couple’s love, however that may look! You could do something unique like a sit-down dinner at home from a private chef, or an end-ofthe-night boat cruise watching the stars. There are no rules! You can plan a one-night adventure, an entire weekend getaway, a comedy show in the middle of the afternoon, or a girl’s night on the couch watching 90s flicks and eating popcorn – make it about the memories and the friendships!

SWEET CELEBRATIONS

When ladies gather, fun treats are a must. A bachelorette party is no different, and Bozeman bakery Sweet & Tarte took the traditional (think cupcakes), and turned it into the unexpected with delicious huckleberry coconut popsicles for the whole squad – and we think they’re quite perfect for the occasion.

122 montanabride.com / MONTANA BRIDE BACH BASH

BACHELORETTE BASH FAQs

Q: Does the party need to be a whole weekend?

A: Absolutely not! While an entire weekend is really fun, sometimes it just isn’t an affordable option. Planning an evening out with the girls is perfect, too.

Q: Who plans and pays for the bachelorette party?

A: Typically, the maid of honor is in charge of the planning, and then the costs are divided among all of the ladies. Be transparent with the group about a budget, and find out what works for them.

THE MONTANA OLD-FASHIONED

Looking for a great signature cocktail?

With help from bar service Treasure State Hospitality, we rounded up a good ol’ fashioned recipe made with Yellowstone Bourbon Whiskey that’s sure to please any western-loving guests.

4 oz. YELLOWSTONE BOURBON WHISKEY

2 tsp. GLACIER DISTILLING CHERRYCELLO

1/4 tsp. SIMPLE SYRUP

4 dashes ANGOSTURA BITTERS

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE:

Run an orange peel over the rim of a short rocks glass and toss in along with a giant ice cube. Shake or stir ingredients and garnish with a bourbon cherry.
