WIGGLY FIELD Riverside Off-Leash Park

iggly Field offers a grassy 2-1/2 acre stretch of modestly treed parkland that welcomes canines of all shapes and sizes. From the tiniest terriers, to the sprightliest spaniels, to the 8

most dashing Dobermans, all are invited to play. Park amenities include benches, a custom (albeit nonfunctioning) fire hydrant, running water, garbage cans, a parking area, connections to the
Skykomish River and Skykomish River Park, agility equipment and a covered shelter which – let’s face it – is more for the humans than it is the dogs. The park’s entrance features
a convenient dual-gated entry and exit system, to provide pet owners with that crucial leashing and unleashing area for increased safety and ease of use. The park’s most recent improvements include an innovative dog- and humanfriendly drinking fountain, and a set of newly constructed agility equipment, courtesy of local Eagle Scout, Alan Simchick. Both were installed towards the end of 2019. Of course, the park’s most cherished asset is the plethora of playful pups that bound from one end of the grassy field to the other, greeting each other with wagging tails and smiles while enjoying their best dog lives. On your gloomiest day, it is impossible to leave Wiggly Field without a grin. The concept for Wiggly Field began to take shape in 2007 after
When visiting Wiggly Field, one thing becomes immediately apparent: The dogs that play there are unequivocally aware that the park is for them.
A volunteer steering committee led the effort, working in harmony with the Monroe Park Board and the City Parks Department to bring their collective vision to life. Truly a grassroots effort, volunteers raised nearly $5,000 to help fund the construction of the park, including fencing and signage. The Monroe Rotary Club was integral to the initial development of the park, donating
the community expressed a desire for an off-leash area in Monroe. Serendipitously, Monroe’s new Parks Director, Mike Farrell, was inspired by the ask and went to work championing the project. A dog-owner himself, he recognized the need as one that was just as important for dog owners as it was for the dogs.

significant funds and organizing a work party to spread wood chips, install agility equipment and build the south fence. Other keynote contributors include Myownly Boarding Kennel, Lucky Dog Resort, Cascade Animal Clinic, numerous families and individual sponsors. Along the way, park enthusiasts were faced with the million-dollar question: what to name the triumphant, riverside off-leash haven? An avid Chicago Cubs fan, Mike pitched the idea of naming the park
A sign welcoming guests to the “friendly confines” was fashioned and installed, a nod to famed Cubs player Ernie Banks, who is said to have coined the sunny salutation. Wiggly Field opened in July of 2008 amid a flurry of fanfare that included a leash-cutting ceremony, media coverage, vendors peddling an assortment dog-friendly wares, a live D.J., and of course Monroe community members and their fourlegged companions. Furry-faced Fidos were indeed the guests of honor, including Mike’s two-year-old German shepherd Riley, who helped

officiate the leash-cutting portion of the affair alongside then-Mayor Donnetta Walser. Monroe-based Wet Noses Natural Dog Treat Company has been a tremendous partner and sponsor over the years, stocking not
only Wiggly Field with “Mutt Mitts” but other Monroe parks as well, as part of a larger overall effort to help reduce dog waste in City parks. Wiggly Field is bordered by 8-foot tall chain link fencing at its northern boundary and 5-foot post-and-rail fencing to the south, which is reinforced with wire mesh during the summer months to help prevent smaller dogs from wandering. The post-and-rail style fencing was selected for its ability to withstand annual high-water events, as the park’s close proximity to the Skykomish River makes it susceptible to flooding. The wire mesh is removed during flood season, typically October through April, helping to minimize fence damage and reduce park maintenance costs. Wiggly Field is open year-round!

OFF-LEASH DOG PARKS
T
he magic of dogs is not to be denied. They’re fur-covered antidepressants, faithful companions, elite guardians, and the most loyal friends you’ll ever find. From dog birthday parties to puppy playdates to pet “pawdicures,” and even doggy massages, there are endless ways to spoil your fur-faced BFF! Allowing them to run rampant in a designated off-leash dog area is another great option, giving you a one-of-a-kind chance for socialization that isn’t just great for your dog, but great for humans too! While off-leash dog parks have been around for decades, they’ve enjoyed an exponential boost in popularity in recent years, partly in response to tightening leash laws in communities across the United States. As dog lovers all know and understand, you’ve got to simply let your dog be a dog, and what better way to do that than allowing them some quality time to sniff everything there is to sniff and chase balls to their hearts content? Here are a few of our favorite off-leash spots both in and out of Monroe.
DUVALL DOG PARK 26524 N.E. Cherry Valley Road, Duvall, WA Duvall’s new off-leash area is recently relocated from its former location near the Snoqualmie Valley Trail to the Dougherty Farmstead, thanks to an Eagle Scout named Ikaika Ward. Ward and his volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 745 spent over 600 hours creating the fully fenced off-leash area, which opened in June of 2019. Duvall’s dog park offers a grassy meadow framed by a wooded thicket, double-gated entry and exit system, mutt mitts, and a beautifully crafted wood frame that displays signage with the park rules. WILLIS TUCKER COMMUNITY PARK OFF-LEASH DOG AREA 6705 Puget Park Drive, Snohomish, WA Willis Tucker Community Park features a total of three separate off-leash dog areas, tucked into the northeast corner of the 78acre park. There is a six-acre open meadow area, fully fenced and perfect for dogs who just want to run and explore; an additional 1.25-acre section, also fully fenced, that offers you and your pup the chance to enjoy a lushly wooded trail system; and a .20-acre shy dog area, for pups who are just getting used to others and need some time to overcome their social awkwardness. A water spigot is positioned at the off-leash area’s entrance/exit and is perfect for filling water bowls and scrubbing off muddy feet. Parking is plentiful at Willis Tucker. Modest in size, Dogs on First is still in its puppy phase, with room for growth contingent on volunteer energy and availability of donated materials. For now, the dog park is fully fenced and the perfect spot for your playful pup to enjoy some off-leash time. Dogs on First is directly adjacent to Osprey Park, which offers a beautiful, recently enhanced interpretive trail system that meanders along the Sultan River. Leashed dogs are welcome in Osprey Park, so once you’ve explored the confines of Dogs on First, the wooded trails of Osprey await. outdoor dining area. Even better, Route 2 guests can share their dining experience with their furry four-legged family members by ordering a bottle of “Bowser Beer,” Route 2’s featured “beer” for dogs.
Bowser Beer is a nonalcoholic and noncarbonated caninefriendly ale that can be enjoyed on its own or trickled on top of your furry friend’s kibble. This exclusive Cock-a-Doodle Brew comes in a bottle with a resealable cap, so rest assured your pup doesn’t have to overindulge. And while your fur-kid is enjoying his or her evening snack, be sure to explore Route 2’s reimagined menu. Open since July of 2015, Route 2 Taproom is celebrating its fiveyear anniversary with an updated, enhanced menu that features new, fresh options, while continuing to provide the classic Route 2 favorites that its customers can’t live without. With the successful launch of the Route 522 Taproom – Route 2’s sibling – which opened in Woodinville last summer, owners Greg Nygreen and Frank Espinoza coaxed Chef Zouhair Mardini out of retirement to further pursue excellence in their menu. A longtime Snohomish area icon known for his (now-closed) restaurant, Mardini’s, Chef Zouhair is noted for Mediterranean style cooking that is richly spiced and filled with flavor. The renovated menu offers weekly rotating specials called “Fresh Sheets,” which are handmade from scratch with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Fresh Sheets feature a kaleidoscope of house-made
goodness, including salads, pasta dishes, seafood entrees, and more. Launched in Woodinville, the elevated menu earned such rave reviews that Greg and Frank made the decision to bring it to Monroe. Happily, all the classic Route 2 chart-toppers are still there, like the famous Taproom Tots, the Route 2 Cheeseburger, and the Grilled Cheese on Crack, a decadent sandwich served on Texas-style bread stuffed with melted American and cheddar cheese, pulled pork and barbecue sauce. Greg discovered the sandwich while visiting a small barbecue eatery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and was instantly enamored with the indulgent delicacy. “I loved it so much that I came back and put it on the menu,” Greg said. tech-savvy tap list. Roughly 26 of its 29 taps are dedicated to the best in craft brews and ciders, with at least two taps reserved for wine. Customers can easily see what’s flowing at Route 2 by checking the intuitive digital menu, which lists each brew, its alcohol content, and how much is left in the keg. Brewer’s Nights are a Route 2 cornerstone, ongoing since the taproom opened its doors in 2015. Local greats like Hellbent, SnoTown, Alaskan, Whitewall and Dog Haus are just few of the local brewers who have participated in this hoppy adult version of show and tell. Thursday nights bring the everpopular Rock and Roll Bingo, an addictive bingo-style game which tests your knowledge of music. Movies Under the Moon is a FREE community event that takes place at Monroe’s Lake Tye Park, a 64-acre lakeside community park that offers restrooms, concessions, a recently updated children’s play area, skate park, and more. The City is excited to feature four fantastic, family friendly flicks, so invite your friends, grab your blankets, and head to the park. This year’s series includes “Aladdin,” playing August 7; “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” playing August 14; “Frozen II,” playing August 21; and “Jumanji: The Next Level,” playing August 28.
