I
Frequently a guest at educational facilities, Isaac also does corporate events and private parties. To Isaac, his work with reptiles is about a lot more than just appealing to that thrill-seeking side of human nature that’s forever searching for the next spine-tingling adventure—it’s about creating a personal connection between humans and reptiles. It’s about giving depth to terms like “conservation” and “sustainability,” by allowing people to experience this diverse class of animals that includes turtles, tarantulas, crocodilians, snakes, lizards and even birds. Isaac noted that humans are naturally compelled to soft, fluffy animals, but not so much when it comes to reptiles, which are often portrayed as frightening, aggressive and mean-spirited. In reality, reptiles aren’t constantly poised for a vicious attack, but prefer to keep to themselves. “Reptiles are not malicious,” he added. “They’re just trying to survive like everyone else.” Because of the human tendency to embrace things winged or furry, it is easy to promote habitat preservation in the context of owls, mountain lions or even bears. But habitat preservation is just as crucial for reptiles, which provide important ecological balance by reducing pesky rodents and insects.
f it slithers, slides, creeps or crawls, you can probably find it at the Reptile Zoo, east Snohomish County’s premier gallery of the most intriguing animals you’re ever likely to encounter. Located just outside Monroe on US 2, the oneof-a-kind Reptile Zoo is vastly loved for its ability to provide that spine-tingling, butterfly-churning adrenaline rush that occurs when you face something that traditionally inspires fear. Exploration of the zoo’s exotic menagerie is an adventurer’s paradise! Tarantulas rest, tortoises bask, lizards investigate, crocodiles observe and snakes coil—all in comfortable, enclosed environments meant to suit their needs, as well as their personalities. And even while pulses are quickening, zoo guests can revel in the sublime sense of confidence that comes with the unequivocal knowledge that the object of their fear cannot hurt them. Founded by former biology teacher Scott Peterson over 20 years ago, the Reptile Zoo is run by Scott’s son, Isaac, who took over zoo operations in 2012. In addition to operating the zoo, Isaac travels the region with a group of live animals, giving unforgettable presentations that teach people about reptiles.

The zoo is filled with interesting, educational tidbits meant to instruct and inspire. As guests journey through the eastern side of the zoo, they’ll encounter an amiable red-footed tortoise named Basil, a water monitor named Little Kippling, a mischievous rhinoceros iguana named Doc and numerous other strangely endearing critters that will thrill the entire family. The western side of the building features a few of the zoo’s more well-known residents, including a two-headed turtle named Pete and Repete, an American alligator named Barnabus, a black mamba named Draco and an albino crocodile named Basker. And if it appears that Basker’s serene pale-eyed gaze is marked by intelligence, that’s because it is. “Crocodilians are among the most intelligent of reptiles,” Isaac said. “They’re the ones that have the true cerebral cortex, which allows them to do more critical thinking. They are intelligent animals, and they understand what’s going on.”
Reptile Zoo staff have backgrounds in biology and are extensively trained in reptile care and handling. Like Isaac, they are passionate about reptiles and love the unique and scaly creatures in their care. For the staff, it’s about a lot more than just providing food and water. It’s about animal enrichment, which involves creating an environment where these critters can thrive. And always, it’s about providing an unforgettable experience for zoo guests. Kirkland resident Diandra Davies-Uttech enjoys bringing her kids to the Reptile Zoo because it provides an experience that appeals to both her son and her daughter. “If you’re looking for a unique, exciting and interesting outing, look no further! There is so much to see, and the staff is awesome at explaining things in detail,” Diandra said. “I would recommend the Reptile Zoo to anyone with children, it’s a fun way to learn!” Her daughter Scarlett is nine.
“There is so much to see! I liked the snakes, tarantulas, petting the turtles’ shells and, of course, the two-headed turtle,” Scarlett said. “Everyone there is really nice and answered all of my questions.” The Reptile Zoo gets an equallyrave review from Diandra’s 11-year-old son, Logan. “The Reptile Zoo has a two-headed turtle! And so many amazing animals,” Logan exclaimed. “You will love it there!” Zoo staff cater to guests. During the daily “Close Encounters” series, they offer an upclose-and-personal glimpse at some of the zoo’s most dynamic residents, giving guests the opportunity to meet them. While it’s difficult for anyone who works there to choose a favorite, Rocko the Cuban Rock Iguana holds a special place in the hearts of Reptile Zoo staff. Rocko can frequently be found sporting clever costumes, especially if it happens to be World Lizard Day, celebrated every year on August 14. “He’s like a scaly cat,” said Reptile Zoo staffer Katelyn Kingsley. “He loves people.”

can use every day. Whether a plate, lemon juicer, bowl or coffee cup, Becca’s pieces are meant to be used, enjoyed and thoroughly loved. Her work is dishwasher and microwave safe. Through teaching she is able to share her art with others. 5 Lines provides classes for the aspiring potter, paint-a-pot for adults and kids, private parties and open studio time for returning students. Her adult pottery classes are incremental, offering students a four-week artistic adventure. Students learn the basics of “throwing”—the potter’s term for shaping clay on a wheel—gradually moving through a process that takes a small ball of clay and turns it into a work of art. 5 Lines classes are structured to accommodate potters of all skill levels, and small enough so every student can benefit from one-on-one instruction if needed. Whether it is your first time at the pottery wheel or your hundredth, all are welcome! For Becca’s students, the environment is both invigorating and restorative—mistakes are embraced, imperfections are celebrated, and successes are wholly enjoyed.
here is nothing quite like the catharsis that comes from creating something with your own two hands. The uninhibited wielding of a paintbrush, the transformation of a formless ball of clay into something visually beautiful and useful—it is all part of a creative journey that soothes and heals. 5 Lines Pottery owner Becca Otis knows that emotional release and knows it well, and has built a business that can provide it to others. Located on Monroe’s historic Main Street, 5 Lines Pottery embraces the emerging “Made in Monroe” theme of downtown by not only offering home décor, plates, wine glasses, bowls and other handmade items, but also the opportunity to sit in front of a pottery wheel and try it for yourself. Or, if colorful composition is more to your liking, choose a handmade bowl created on-site by Becca, grab a paintbrush and add splashes of color to your heart’s content. Becca’s expertise is production pottery. She crafts functional, durable works of art that people

“It is through failure that we learn how to succeed,” is one of Becca’s driving philosophies. Student Debra Shelden cherishes her time at 5 Lines. She adores the gritty, productive feel of the clay on her hands as she works to create something unique. Much like a gardener finds solace in the earth, Debra loves the mesmerizing lull of the pottery wheel, the occasional splash of water used to help shape the clay, and Becca’s gentle guidance throughout the process. New to the Monroe community, Debra stumbled across 5 Lines through an online search. “It was sort of on my bucket list to take a pottery class,” Debra said. “I love that it’s my time.” Becca’s journey with 5 Lines is not unlike the art of pottery itself; colorful, quirky and free-spirited, punctuated by tireless effort, unceasing dedication and a generous splash or two of blind faith. Operating her own studio has been a labor of love, with emphasis on the word labor. Becca works 16-hour days, and sometimes more in the summer, to maintain her needed level of inventory. She peddles her pottery in Leavenworth every weekend, which helps pay the bills. It’s hectic and exhausting while being incredibly rewarding, and Becca wouldn’t have it any other way. Originally from Colorado, Becca graduated in 2012 with an art degree from Cal Poly Pomona, where she was first introduced to the potter’s wheel. She returned home after graduation, and without a clear idea of what to do next, decided on adventure. She had always been prone to wanderlust, so an unscripted trip around the country seemed in order. She packed up her car and hit the road, driving slowly and savoring her time behind the wheel. She slept in her car along the way, avoiding the cost of lodging to minimize her expenses and lengthen her time on the road. She passed through South Dakota, Illinois, and Michigan, eventually making her way to Maine. Becca doesn’t describe herself as “deep.” She didn’t spend the entire trip contemplating the meaning of life. It was

SHE DIDN’T SPEND THE ENTIRE TRIP CONTEMPLATING THE MEANING OF LIFE.

more about relationships—relationships with herself, God and others. “I was not thinking about ceramics the whole time,” Becca said. “I was just focused on my life and how I wanted to live it.” Whispers of the future were sprinkled along the way like subtle hints. It was in Maine that she first encountered a “mug club,” a popular concept among craft brewhouses in which patrons are assigned custom-made mugs as incentive to enroll in the club. This year, Becca singlehandedly created a series of original, mug club mugs for Dreadnought Brewing, an alehouse located near Monroe’s Lake Tye. Her trip was an exercise in fluidity. It was freedom and it was bravery, priceless in its capacity for self-discovery. She showered in local gyms and made friends wherever she went. After staying in Boston for a week with friends, she headed for Tennessee, which is when serendipity made a very deliberate and opportune appearance. She passed through Rhode Island and arrived in Putnam, Connecticut, only to realize that she was out of money. She calmly set up digs in a parking lot and took stock of her surroundings. Across the street, she noticed a little shop called Sawmill Pottery. Owned by a woman named Dot Burnworth, Sawmill is a working studio, with a retail area in the front, a paint-a-pot area in the back, and six pottery wheels used for classes. “I had never seen a studio like hers,” Becca said. “It looked like she was having so much fun.” Dot was helping with a fundraiser called the “Empty Bowl Project,” at which community members were invited to get together for a meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a Choose Monroe
donation, diners were able to keep the bowls, which were handmade at Sawmill. Dot needed more bowls for the event, which secured Becca a seat at one of Dot’s potter’s wheels. She was instantly reminded of how much she had enjoyed pottery in college, and a seed was planted. Through Dot, she met others in the community, attracted by the novelty of her nomadic state. “Putnam, Connecticut kind of embraced me,” Becca explained. “I was like a weird, little homeless girl that was driving around the country.” She stayed in Connecticut until she was hired by Sherwin-Williams, a national paint and home improvement store. It was the position at SherwinWilliams that landed her in Monroe. The job was a compromise for Becca—it was artistic in nature, while providing the stability of a regular paycheck. She began taking pottery classes at Bruning Pottery in Snohomish, again rediscovering her love for the craft. She honed her skills deliberately at Bruning, with the goal of specializing in production pottery. She systematically mastered plates, cups and bowls—all through intense focus and dedication. Her gift was revealed through hard work. Production pottery is her specialty and her niche—creating beautifully consistent pieces meant to endure. In 2014, she left Sherwin-Williams in favor of a smaller painting company. It was a pivotal move, and one that would serve as a bridge between punching a timeclock and becoming an entrepreneur. Like clay on a potter’s wheel, her life began to develop shape and solidity. She decided to lay down roots, and at the age of 24, purchased a home in Sultan. She set up shop in her basement and began creating pottery in

earnest. Her career blossomed; she did a few Monroe-area art shows and was awarded a one-time contract with Starbucks, creating about 300 pieces for the Seattle-based coffee empire as a “Featured Artist.” She officially transitioned to entrepreneur in 2015, leaving her job to focus on pottery full-time. Opening a storefront was the next logical step, she tackled that challenge in 2017. Both Bruning and Sawmill inspire her in her daily endeavors at 5 Lines. For Becca, 5 Lines is about more than just making a bowl, a vase, or a plate. It’s about making a living, making relationships, and making connections. She feels that the Monroe community is truly magical and has supported her every step of the way. 5 Lines is indeed a culmination of community. ucked discretely in Monroe’s historic downtown core, a step inside Jeno’s Restaurant instantly transports you back to a gentler time. The air is intoxicating, thick with nostalgia, as nearly 50 years of memories linger inside like dreams. For Terry, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly how they’ve managed to survive the notoriously fickle restaurant industry for nearly half a century. Mostly, it’s been about hard work and staying true to the restaurant’s origins. For his parents, “It’s a labor of love,” said Terry, who has worked at the restaurant on and off since he was in his teens, and can still often be found in the kitchen. Through hard work, they’ve managed to become a Monroe cornerstone. John and Tina have endured economic downturns, fad diets, a struggling downtown core and vast growth, all while raising a family and providing countless jobs to Sky Valley community members. “It’s pretty incredible,” Terry said. “It’s hard work. My mom and dad work seven days week.” For Jeno’s customers, it’s easy to pinpoint the reasons Jeno’s has endured over the years. First and foremost, customers and staff alike are welcomed as honorary members of the Damianidis family. John and Tina (affectionately known as “Mama”) have ingrained themselves in the hearts of Monroe residents, impressing those who know them with their resiliency, authenticity and capacity for caring. Then there is the homemade food. The restaurant business is truly in the Damianidis blood, with tried and

The venue offers a stunning oasis of manicured garden areas, custom rockeries, cozy patios and rustic, airy buildings, making it an ideal place for those cherished events that you want to remember forever. And if it looks as though the grounds are meticulously tended by a professional landscaper, that’s because they are. Pine Creek started as a small, home-based nursery created to provide plants to support Paul’s landscaping company. They soon decided to broaden their endeavor by adding retail sales, which were available seasonally. It was very “mom and pop,” Gwen recalled. As Paul honed his craft, landscaping their yard, it became a showcase. People could tour their gardens in search of inspiration for their own gardens, much like the Pine Creek of today. Eventually, they outgrew the space, and in 2003, purchased 20 acres of raw land just outside of Monroe. It was overgrown and filled with blackberry brambles, but according to Gwen, Paul is a visionary. He can look at a rugged,

Scattered Seeds: A Flower Farm is an aspect of the venue that gives it a unique flair, adding custom floral arrangements to the mix. From bou-
quets to centerpieces to everything in between, Scattered Seeds is truly the intersection of passion and purpose for Gwen, who loves the opportunity to create enchantment with flowers. She strives for artistic contrast, often foraging the property to discover less conventional materials to incorporate into her designs. Clients might find rich moss, spiny lichen, graceful branches, vivid green hops, or clusters of grapes in their arrangements, which are hand-made on-site. Gwen can work with clients who desire a certain flower or plant, and custom grow it exclusively for their event.
