With that as our purpose, we strive to keep giving the people of our community everything they need to stay strong, to grow, and to thrive.

Dear Friends, When you think of the YMCA, the words swim, camp, and fitness most likely come to mind. Although these words describe the programs we provide, the Y is so much more.

The Y is more than a place or program. For over 35 years, the Monroe County YMCA has been a cause dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As you review the 2017 Annual Impact Report, the Y member stories will show how we can all work together to make a brighter future for our neighbors by supporting the Y’s mission. As you read Shauna and Jeff Hockett’s story, you’ll see how your donations are helping this young couple keep peace of mind as they battle the effects of Jeff’s cancer together. You’ll see how the YMCA Endowment Fund is bringing healthy lifestyles right to fourth grade classrooms through our Energize program. You’ll see how Bill and LuAnne Holladay have been changing lives as Y yoga instructors for over 25 years.

We hope you see the impact the Y is making in people’s lives and realize how important you are to our mission.

This past year was filled with change and growth here at the Monroe County YMCA, and we could not continue supporting our community without you. The hard work and generous support of our partners, volunteers, donors, staff, and members makes it possible for our nonprofit organization to carry out our mission. And, it will take all of us to forge a stronger, healthier, and more connected community for everyone. WE ARE fostering positive change in our youth through our youth development programs which impact our communities now and will reach into the future.

2,557 children were nurtured and gained confidence through youth sports and swim programs at the Y. 1,559 campers experienced adventure and learning through day camps at the YMCA. 237 children absorbed knowledge, skills, and values through afterschool and daycare programs.

1,350 fourth graders participated in Energize, our in-school program that provides lessons about healthy eating choices and the importance of 60 minutes of exercise per day.

24 kids built confidence in and around water with free swim lessons through our SPLASH program.

31 teens participated in our Counselors-in-Training Summer Camp to help grow leaders in our community.

354 visits per month were made to The Zone – a safe, social, wellness area for youth ages 7 to 12.

38,816 visits were made to our Play and Learn child watch, which is a perk included in membership.

308 children gave their parents a marriage-strengthening date night

thanks to our Parent’s Night Out program.

768 people attended Family Fun Night in February 2017.

Youth Development

ENERGIZE PROGRAM It’s no secret healthy habits start at a young age.

The Energize program at the Monroe County YMCA gives kids a chance to move, groove, and enjoy healthy snacks! Funded by the YMCA Endowment Fund, Energize is an in-school program focused on educating fourth grade students on healthy eating choices and the importance of 60 minutes of exercise per day. Our Community Youth Outreach Coordinator, Ashley Lowers, visited 29 classrooms and about 750 students in the Monroe County Community School Corporation during the 2016-17 school year.

“Every month during the school year, we tasted foods to introduce students to new options for all five of the major food groups,” said Ashley. “Food and supplies, such as cups, napkins, or plates, add up quickly. Donations to the YMCA Endowment Fund allowed us to hire more staff and provided more hands-on activities, supplies, and food for the children.”

The YMCA also partnered with The WonderLab Museum in 2017 to create an Energize! After School program at the museum in an attempt to reach children beyond the classroom. This new afterschool program provides snacks, activities to get the blood pumping, and nutrition learning activities to promote healthy living kids can carry into adulthood.

Energize shows students different ways they can achieve 60 minutes of physical activity in a fun, intimidationfree environment. Not everyone enjoys sports, running, or strength training, so the program focuses primarily on fitness activities that incorporate the cardiovascular and muscular system through active play.

“I love Energize! It’s one of my favorite things to do because it helps you learn new things about eating, what whole grains are and what whole grains aren’t. Today I learned bananas were berries and strawberries were drupes — I was really surprised about that,” said Stephanie McIntosh, a 10-year-old fourth grader at Childs Elementary School.

Ashley shares the students’ enthusiasm. “When a student tells me they tried a new food and really enjoyed it, or they started going for a walk with their parents in the evening, that’s when I know this program is a success and leaves a lasting impact on our youth.”

Without the support from the Monroe County YMCA community, the Energize program would not be able to touch as many lives as it has over the past ten years.

“It’s fun because we get to learn how to play new games, and we get a lot more exercise in a day than we would normally,” Stephanie explained. “We get to get up and move and learn new things about stuff we didn’t know.”

WE ARE a community made up of people of all ages and every walk of life, and we are here to help each one to live a healthier lifestyle and to provide opportunities to make new connections and friends.

543,198 visits were made to our YMCAs to get healthy and have fun.

136 adults each month were served through integrated health programs to live better with chronic conditions.

4,616 people participated in our Group Exercise, Yoga, Tai Chi, and Pilates programs with 58,294

visits to our 92 free Group Ex class options throughout the year.

45 people with disabilities engaged in fitness programming, and experienced a work skill with their

caregivers in a safe environment through our Upstart partnership with Stone Belt.

1,000 different ability and social service clients from 19 community agencies received Y membership access and opportunities.

591 participants became certified at CPR/AED and First Aid classes taught through the Y. 119 people participated in our free 5K Fridays at the Northwest and Southeast branches for seven weeks.

27 local organizations participated in Corporate Challenge, which promotes 8

healthy living and competitive fun among employers.

YOGA PROGRAM

It’s about the students and teaching something we are passionate about. “

Bill and LuAnne Holladay, long-time yoga instructors at the Y, began taking yoga in the late 1980s for stress reduction. After several years they were asked to teach yoga. Bill has taught at the Y for 25 years and LuAnne has taught for 28 years. When asked why they continue to teach yoga after all these years, they both reply that “it’s all about the students.”

They say spending time with the students, seeing them discover the benefits of yoga, and how they can carry the practice their whole lives is gratifying. The health benefits of developing strength, flexibility, stamina, balance, and learning to focus and concentrate one’s mind is demonstrable. It’s also a total body practice with a ripple effect throughout the body and brain. “There are also mental benefits to yoga through the practice, breathing, and concentration,” Bill says. “Type A personalities learn to let go and relax over time. It’s not that stress goes away, but it’s teaching them how to live with it and respond differently to it. They become better equipped to handle their stressful lives. I say to students, ‘This is your hour. Don’t let your outside pressures rob you of this time. Let go and be willing to take your hour.”

LuAnne says she is tuned in to the needs of the people in the class on that particular day. The participants are all body types and ages with varying ability levels, so she helps people adapt to what they are capable of doing.

Bill and LuAnne both say their teaching is not about going through a set of poses and just having students follow them. They give guidance and suggestions for possible alternatives and modifications to help them progress in their practice.

They acknowledge that people who come to yoga with no other experience are sometimes surprised that the class consists of more than just coming in to do some stretching poses and then leave. It can be a surprise that working with your breath can be a challenge, or discovering the strengthbuilding aspects of yoga, and to see that it’s a total body practice.

“We’re asked to teach and not People who stay with it develop an appreciation of the richness lead. That’s a fine distinction. of yoga.

It keeps me alert to being here for the students. Otherwise I’m not serving the students.

One of my goals as a teacher is I want people to feel empowered, not defeated, and to feel better,” says Luanne.

LuAnne and Bill say the community of the class is a wonderful thing to see. The class participants get to know each other and welcome new students. They say it is satisfying to see friendships develop and to see the support of the practice. People come to class originally feeling insecure and meet people who say, “I’m just like you and this is what yoga has meant to me.”

Their advice for those just starting out in yoga is, “Don’t judge yourself. Work at your own pace.

That is key to carrying on this practice. Listen to your own body.”

WE ARE seeing opportunities where others have seen obstacles. We have envisioned a future filled with possibility for everyone.

528 donors generously supported the Y to help bring about lasting personal and social change, positively impacting those in our community.

214 volunteers gave back to the community by sharing their time and

talent at the Y for a total of more than 6,596 hours.

24 pints of blood were collected through two American Red Cross blood

drives. As one pint can affect three lives, 72 hospital patients benefited from lifesaving blood.

3,427 pounds of food were donated through the Hoosier Hills Food Drive.

700 employees worked at the Y knowing that what they do each

day positively affects the lives of the people in our community.

In 2017, we collaborated with the Shalom Community Center to fill the shelves of the Crawford Homes Hygiene Resource Pantry and the Salvation Army to combat the winter weather with a Winter Coat Drive. We collected holiday gifts for children in the local foster care system through the Department of Child Services in Monroe County and encouraged summer campers to donate non-perishable food items to Backpack Buddies. We were a part of the community collaboration initiative ACHIEVE (Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and EnVironmental ChangE) to advocate and support healthy living opportunities, and we partnered with the WonderLab to introduce children to hands-on STEM experiments through our Energize program.

Social Responsibility

Shauna and Jeff Hockett In 2017, the Monroe County YMCA offered financial assistance to 199 families who needed a little support to become a Y member.

Shauna and Jeff Hockett were one of those families.

At 30 years old, Jeff was diagnosed with cancer. In the past four years, he’s received a bone marrow transplant, been to countless doctor appointments, and he and his wife have the constant worry and stress about his health and bills.

Thankfully their Y membership fee is a bill they don’t have to worry about each month. Jeff previously worked at IU Health, but it became dangerous to his health to continue. So, Jeff and Shauna applied for Y membership financial assistance and were grateful to receive it. Financial assistance is not only helpful monetarily, it also assists in the ability for Jeff to recover since some of their financial burden is relieved and they have access to an outlet.

And the Y is more than just a place to improve their physical health; it’s a stress reliever especially for Shauna.

Shauna says it’s “more than working out for me. It’s my healthy vice and I am thankful to be able to exercise at the YMCA!” It’s her time to tune out the worries of her day-to-day and focus on herself. “The stress of having to balance work, be a caregiver, and attend doctor appointments adds up.” Working out is an essential stress reliever to help keep her mind at ease.

Along with her weekly routines in the Wellness Center and around the track, Shauna also swims and has tried various Group Exercise classes. “We know we could go to other local gyms, but we chose the Y because of the number of options you can get involved in,” Jeff said. Though he is now cancer-free, Jeff is still battling the effects from his cancer and is determined to join a cycling class at the Y once his health allows.

Shauna and Jeff cannot thank donors enough.

“We are humbled at the generosity of others.”

Y For All Signature Event The Monroe County YMCA hosted its fundraising gala in 2017 at the Northwest Y to raise critically needed funds to provide financial assistance to those who need it most.
