FOR POSITIVE CHANGE Dear Friends, The YMCA has become a vital part of our community.

The YMCA is like no other nonprofit organization. The same movement that helps families of Monroe County also serves in 10,000 neighborhoods across our nation. The Y is community centered; for nearly 160 years, the Y has listened and responded to individual communities. The Monroe County YMCA has been a catalyst for positive change for over 35 years in our community. We continue to be committed to helping kids, families and individuals reach their full potential.

Every day the Monroe County YMCA provides the support needed for the community to learn, grow, and thrive. Aquatics, child care, camp, sports, water safety, and wellness, are a few highlights of what we do to help strengthen our community and the people who live here. Our programs transform lives and give our community hope for a better future.

In 2016, we continued to make capital investments in our facilities to meet the ever-changing needs of our diverse population. Also, through our afterschool program, we provided a supportive environment that engaged and empowered kids in order to close the achievement gap and increase student outcomes. Our fitness, health, and wellness programs inspired people to make better choices and live more active and healthier lives. Our innovative evidenced-based YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program successfully impacted and reduced the risk of Type II Diabetes for many of our community members giving them the chance to live a healthier, longer life.

We are able to accomplish all that we do because of the many dedicated individuals and partners that make it possible for the Y to carry out its mission. Because of your support, the Monroe County YMCA has made enormous strides towards improving the health and well-being of the community we serve. Youth Development holistic healthy development safe fun educational fresh strong play-based Growing and Learning Chef Chris “Sal” Saligoe The YMCA’s licensed full-day early childhood program, the Center for Children and Families, is dedicated to providing a high-quality, research-based program for children 6 weeks through 5 years old. In addition to providing activities and interactions that develop children holistically, including cognitively, and socially/emotionally, the Y puts a special emphasis on children’s healthy physical development by incorporating physical activity and fresh meals made in-house by full time chef, Chris “Sal” Saligoe.

Chef Sal’s menu focuses on healthy lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, daily vegetarian choices and flavors from around the world. Flaky white fish and maple-roasted brussels sprouts have become fast favorites! Children have the opportunity to try foods that are new to them like tempeh, and to savor familiar favorites like garlic-flavored hummus.

In the early childhood years, children’s bodies and minds are developing rapidly—and all that growth is best served by offering children healthy, whole foods that supply the vitamins, minerals and macronutrients that their growing bodies and brains require. In addition, offering healthy foods in early childhood helps to prime children’s palates so that they are more accepting of naturally sweet foods in lieu of unhealthy options like candy and sodas. All of this helps to reduce the incidence of childhood obesity, a growing epidemic in our country.

The YMCA’s Center for Children and Families offers families a safe, fun, and educational place to leave their children while they go to work as scientists, health practitioners, government officials, and more. They can be more productive because they know that their children are well cared for. Their children, in turn, learn and grow in our play-based environment, enveloping their minds and bodies in a holistic and healthy way. In these ways, we make our community stronger.

Healthy Living strength support camaraderie balance health membership success a gift Helping Cancer Survivors Reclaim their Health Shari Smith Shari Smith knew something had changed with her body. Doctors weren’t so sure she was right.

After multiple doctor visits, tests, placebos, and mislabeled diagnoses, Shari finally learned what had been affecting her body for so long: cancer. Small lymphocytic lymphoma had formed creating bone pain, weakened strength, and a mass sitting on the nerve bundle that supplied the left leg with the nerve stimulation required for everyday walking.

Cancer treatment helped bring back the stimulation, but after two years, her balance had been left at bay. That’s when Shari knew she needed the Monroe County YMCA. Through generous donations and the help of Margie Kobow, Active Lives Program Director, Shari received the support and financial assistance to join the YMCA and continue her health journey.

Margie’s generosity didn’t stop there. She met Shari in the pool many mornings. The pool was where Shari felt most comfortable after competitively swimming the majority of her early life.

Slowly, but surely, Margie helped Shari feel more balanced, not only in the pool, but back on land as well. Out of the pool, Shari began participating in Building Better Balance, a class Margie taught.

When Shari first started participating, she stood, as a 56 yearold, who appeared physically healthy, surrounded by those who had endured hip replacements, major falls, and ailments that come with old age. She asked herself if it was fair to be in the same class. Margie assured her that as long as she gained benefit, then that’s enough.

“

Within a year, the class became more of a support system.

Shari celebrates the camaraderie in every class. “Everyone embraces everyone for their success. It’s inspiring to see other successes as well as revel in your own.” Shari admits that she would find herself texting Margie the day after a class and admitting to feeling stronger than the day before. That’s enough to keep her participating in the program.

Being able to come to the Y every day is a gift. It’s about the most important gift I have.”

When Shari leaves the pool after a low-impact swim, she thanks the life guards. When she leaves a class, she thanks the instructors. When she passes the Welcome Center on her way out, she thanks the staff. Why? “Being able to come to the Y every day is a gift. It’s about the most important gift I have,” she said, “When I’m asked what’s important to me now, I say two things: chemo and the YMCA.” 6

Social Responsibility work skills respect collaboration mission service inclusion support success Partnering to Enhance Potential Ron Remak and Stone Belt When Ron Remak, current Monroe County YMCA Association Board Member, was selected as the recipient of the Bloomington Rotary Clubs’ “Service Above Self” award, he knew he wanted to collaborate with a place near and dear to his heart. Remak selected the Monroe County YMCA’s new UPStART (Unlocking Potential: Stone Belt Athletics, Recreation, and Training) Program as the recipient of half of the proceeds raised from the event.

UPStART is an expansion on the partnership the Y already holds with Stone Belt, one of the oldest and largest service providers for individuals with developmental disabilities in south central Indiana, including Monroe County. In addition to current adapted strength and conditioning programs, UPStART will provide a shared fitness professional who will develop and deliver fitness programming to Stone Belt staff and clients. The Y will also serve as a Stone Belt Workplace Readiness Training Site which allows a client to experience a work skill in a safe environment. These skills will include, but are not limited to: folding towels, greeting members, sweeping, and washing windows.

Remak explained his decision: “I chose this collaborative effort between two nonprofits for which I have so much respect – the YMCA and Stone Belt. Our family has enjoyed the Y throughout the years, and it is gratifying that the important mission of the Y will be offered to those who might not otherwise be able to enjoy its many programs.”
