Before starting LeanOnWe, Gold had a 25-year career in international equity markets, working for both Lehman Brothers and Barclays. Gold holds dual degrees from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Penn’s College of Arts and Science, and a master’s degree in business from Columbia University. He serves on the boards of several civic and nonprofit organizations.

Gowns are black, except for special colors associated with some universities. The red gowns and caps with white tassels worn by the members of the Monmouth College Board of Trustees were designed in the colors of the College. Although the Trustees represent a variety of academic backgrounds and professions, their unique academic apparel symbolizes their significant affiliation with Monmouth College. Bachelors’ and masters’ gowns are untrimmed, while the doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three velvet bars across the sleeve. The facing and the bars may be black, or they may be the color representing the field of study. The doctor’s hood is four feet in length, the master’s is three and one half, and the bach-

elor’s is three feet long. Each hood is lined with the official colors of the college or university which awarded the degree. The border of the hood—two inches, three inches, and five inches wide for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degrees, respectively— identifies the faculty or department of study to which the degree pertains. Cap tassels for the doctor’s degree are gold, while the tassels for the master’s and bachelor’s degrees are black or the color of the particular discipline. Official colors for hood borders and cap tassels include: Arts and Letters, white; Economics, copper; Education, light blue; Fine Arts, brown; Humanities, dark crimson; Law, purple; Library Science, lemon; Music, pink; Philosophy, blue; Physical Education, sage green; Science, golden yellow; and Theology, scarlet.

AC A DE M IC R E G A L I A Like the Latin phrases used by the Dean of the Faculty and the President, the academic regalia (cap, gown and hood) worn today originated in the Middle Ages. The design of the gown and the lining and shape of the hood have now come to have academic significance. In the United States, most academic regalia are worn in accordance with the general provisions of the Intercollegiate Code of 1895. Under the code, the bachelor’s gown has long, pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The master’s gown has an oblong sleeve, which gives the impression of a short sleeve. The rear part of its oblong shape is cut square, and the front part has an arc cut away. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. Like the master’s gown, it may be worn open or closed.

ACADEMIC HONORS Students receiving the Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude (with highest honors) earned cumulative grade averages of 3.90 to 4.00. Students with this distinction are wearing honor pendants as part of their academic garb. Students receiving the degree magna cum laude (with high honors) achieved cumulative grade averages of at least 3.75. Students with this honor are wearing gold cords. Students with cumulative grade averages between 3.50 and 3.75 are graduated cum laude (with honors). These students are wearing gold cap tassels.

DEPARTMENTAL HONORS Departmental Honors, indicated by a dagger (†) in the program, are awarded to students by their major departments according to criteria established by the various departments. Several of the graduates are wearing regalia associated with national academic honor societies in which they hold membership. They are as follows: Biology (Beta Beta Beta) dark green and red cords; Classics (Eta Sigma Phi) purple and gold cords/gold hood with owl emblem; Communication (Lambda Pi Eta) red and white cords; Educational Studies (Kappa Delta Pi) purple and green cords; English (Sigma Tau Delta) red and black cords; French (Pi Delta Phi) blue, white and red cords; History (Phi Alpha Theta) sky blue and crimson cords; Political Science (Pi Sigma Alpha) red, white and black cords; Psychology (Psi Chi) yellow cords; Spanish (Sigma Delta Pi) gold and red cords; and Theatre (Alpha Psi Omega) light blue and gold cords.

SPECIAL HONORS Gold and silver braided cords are being worn by members of the Tau Pi Chapter of Mortar Board, an honor society recognizing seniors for service and scholarship. Royal blue cords are being worn by members of Blue Key, an honorary fraternity recognizing outstanding character and ability and distinction in service, leadership and scholarship. Red and white honor hoods designate graduates who have successfully completed the Monmouth College Honors Program. Red, gold and white cords are being worn by members of Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honorary for freshmen.

LEGACY GRADUATES Since its founding in 1853, Monmouth College has been enriched by generations of students who have chosen to attend the alma mater of the ancestors and family members. The names of graduates who have chosen to honor such family relationships are marked with this symbol: 

THE SENIOR CLASS GIFT A time-honored Monmouth College tradition is the bestowing of a gift to the College by the graduating senior class. This year’s senior class gift will provide for the installation of water bottle filling stations across campus. Gifts from recent classes have ranged from new campus signage to the Scots Spirit statue in Boucher Plaza. One past gift—the Class of 2011’s outdoor classroom—has become part of the Commencement tradition, providing a performance venue for the Wind Ensemble. Class memorials from more than a century ago still survive and have become iconic landmarks of the Monmouth campus. These include the large limestone boulders that dot the front of campus; the sundial, presented by the Class of 1910; and the stone bench, presented by the Class of 1920.
