Your Invitation to Share the Vision Dear patrons, supporters and friends, It’s that time of year again, when we put pencil to paper to try to capture, in a one-page letter, our achievements over the past year. As usual, we’re finding it a challenge because so much has happened since last year’s annual report. We are excited to tell you about all of it, but we’ll stick to the highlights….

At the top of the list, we’ve begun an ambitious Theatre District Campaign with a goal of raising ten million dollars over five years to complete the renovation of 551 Main Street.

These funds will launch The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for the Performing Arts and outfit, maintain and program the Francis R. Carroll Plaza, the pedestrian plaza right in front of the theatre. We’ve already raised $4.5M of the $10M and have begun to put these funds to good use. On June 2, 2016, we celebrated the opening of 551 Main Street and the conservatory with a hugely successful block party.

In June, Worcester City Manager Ed Augustus announced the city’s plans to re-direct Southbridge Street, creating a pedestrian plaza directly in front of the theatre. While that construction won’t begin until mid-2017, we’ve placed some tables and chairs in the existing plaza, along with free public Wi-Fi and music. As a result, we have seen an ever-increasing number of people enjoying the space.

Also, and very importantly, in the past year we fully developed and embraced our new strategic plan, focusing on four key points: Inclusivity and Excellence – Being a world-class destination for the broadest possible audience Sustainability – Keeping our organization financially sound for the long-term Engagement – Broadening our arts engagement and education opportunities Downtown – Building a vibrant, inviting theatre district 18 hours a day, 365 days a year Lastly, we want you to know that we’ve begun to look ahead to our tenth anniversary in spring 2018, and to a gala event celebrating the momentous occasion!

So many of you were there with us in spring 2008 when we opened The Hanover Theatre, and have been with us every step of the way since. It is only through the support of our community, staff and volunteers that we have achieved so much; and through your continued dedication and passion can we aspire to do all that we have planned for the future. s a founding board member and strong advocate of The Hanover Theatre, it gives me great pride to see the theatre continue to play a major role in the revitalization of this corner of Main Street. Like the historic restoration project eight and a half years ago, this new development at 551 Main Street will spearhead further growth and vitality in Worcester’s downtown.

Theatre District Campaign Priorities The theatre is committed to building on its success as a Broadway and performing arts venue by offering expanded educational opportunities, playing a leadership role in district enhancement and contributing to cultural programming beyond its current footprint.

These Theatre District Campaign priorities reflect that commitment.

1. 551 Main Street Acquisition and Development: It will be a vehicle for diverse revenue streams generated by educational programs, function facilities and first floor rental income.

2. Performing Arts Conservatory: The conservatory will provide 7500 square feet of space for a wide variety of learning opportunities.

3. District Enhancement: The redesign of Francis R. Carroll Plaza will create a pedestrian- friendly environment and open space for outdoor arts and cultural activities.

4. Theatre District Programming: The theatre will partner with other venues and cultural organizations to feature diverse cultural programming throughout the district to enhance the visitor experience, such as: “Worcester’s Off Broadway” plays, street performances, comedy and improv performances.

The Theatre District Campaign’s quiet phase began in 2014 with a lead gift of $700,000 from The Hanover Insurance Group which was matched by local family foundations, corporations and individual contributors for the purchase and development of the 551 Main Street building. The goal of the campaign is to raise $10 million by 2020.

Progress on the Plaza A working group was formed in June to begin the planning process for re-designing the Francis R. Carroll Plaza. In addition to theatre staff and volunteers, the group includes representatives from the city of Worcester and Tower Hill Botanic Garden. The group will advise on the design plan and address issues related to parking, school bus and conservatory drop offs, handicapped access, traffic flow and safety. The plaza is currently maintained by theatre volunteers who have created a beautiful and welcoming space for pedestrians and patrons. During the summer, tables and chairs as well as free Wi-Fi and music were added to the plaza. This is just the beginning of much more to come.

Building a Vibrant District The Hanover Theatre in partnership with the Worcester Business Development Corporation formed the Theatre District Alliance in October 2015 inviting representatives from other cultural organizations, area businesses, civic and city representatives and Worcester Police to work cooperatively to bring the district to the next level of revitalization. The group holds monthly meetings which address issues related to economic development, cultural programming, safety, traffic, parking, cleanliness and beautification. The Theatre District Block Party in June was the group’s first event which was financially supported by members of the alliance who participated in its planning and execution.

As a founding member of the alliance, the theatre is meeting its strategic goal to continue to be a change agent for revitalization and sustained growth downtown.

he Theatre District Alliance has proven to be a great collection of our area’s businesses, as well as civic and cultural representatives, coming together for the common purpose of making our downtown neighborhood a great place to live, work and play.

All Ages Engage in the Arts Adopt-A-School Program Dr Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! was the Broadway production selected for our third annual Adopt-A-School program with South High Community School in Worcester. The entire school of 1300 students participated in an intensive curriculum-based program that centered on the themes of this Broadway show which culminated in a unique theatre experience at the theatre.

Once again poems, artwork and projects created in all subjects adorned the walls of the theatre lobby during the show held in early November. The Adopt-A-School program has proven to be a highly effective vehicle for motivating students and facilitating the learning process.

Access to the Arts Fund As the new performing arts conservatory aims to broaden and expand patron engagement, the theatre is proud to continue offering a wide range of Access to the Arts outreach initiatives. The following programs touch the lives of countless individuals of many ages and backgrounds.

New Wurlitzer Tours The theatre has already been offeing monthly Founders’ Tours as well as Historical and Architectural Tours. This year we added, The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ Tours which are conducted by Donald Phipps, founder and curator of this special instrument, and his talented team. The organ tour includes a complete behind-the-scenes look at one of New England’s largest theatre pipe organs and a private performance by theatre organist, Len Beyersdorfer.

Something for Everyone

The 2015-2016 season included a wide variety of Broadway shows, concerts, comedy and dance performances in which the theatre demonstrated its commitment to providing firstclass cultural opportunities to a growing audience. We will continue to build on our past strengths to attract the highest quality shows and performances that broaden our appeal and widen our patron base. The theatre is proud to have hosted a total of 205 performances and functions.

$551,413 was generated from membership dollars last year; $5,269,967 was generated from ticket sales with $4,853,511 paid back to outside promoters, performers, and show expenses.

Membership revenues provide funding which support the theatre’s operation and day-to-day management. This important source of contributed income, especially during a period of significant growth for the theatre is critical to our ability to continue to deliver quality programming and excellent value to our patrons. 92% of ticket revenue goes directly back to the show or performance. Membership and sponsorship support is critical to closing the funding gap. We thank all 3246 member households for helping us to better serve the community.

Thank you to the following members who opted to participate in our sustaining membership program. This program helps us to streamline the renewal and fulfillment process, which builds a strong base of loyal supporters, saves on administrative costs and helps us become a more ecologically conscious organization. A sustaining membership renews automatically from year to year and is processed via debit or credit card. Monthly payments are available to sustaining members beginning at the Associate Level.

We fondly remember the following individuals who are no longer with us for their generosity and commitment to the theatre. All of these individuals were founding members and yearly Franklin Square Society members.

Arthur Pappas was a generous annual contributor and he and his wife, Martha were deeply committed to the theatre’s success and city’s renovation.

Marilyn Griff Aaronson along with her husband Mark, were early supporters and advocates of the preservation project.

Lee Norton Kelly enjoyed many performances with her husband David and were happy to support the cultural revitalization of Worcester through their generosity to the theatre.

They will all be remembered and deeply missed by their friends at The Hanover Theatre.

Leaving a Legacy The Hanover Theatre stage was the setting for an elegant inaugural luncheon for the 1926 Society. The May 4th event featured President & CEO, Troy Siebels who acknowledged the strong commitment of the audience made up of theatre supporters and volunteers, and gave an overview of the theatre’s milestones and business model. Tracy Barlok, co-chair of the Planned Giving committee, delivered welcoming remarks and introduced guest speaker Ann Lisi, President of the Greater Worcester Community Foundation. The program focused on the importance of building an active legacy society to address the theatre’s long term sustainability and growing need to invest in the maintenance and upkeep of our magnificent historic building.

Extraordinary Service The theatre volunteers play an integral part with the front-of-house team and administrative departments. The beauty of the Francis R. Carroll Plaza, directly across from the theatre, is attributed to a special group of theatre volunteers who selflessly devote their time and energy in planting, weeding, watering and maintaining this lovely park for the benefit of our patrons and the community. Since 2008, The Hanover Theatre volunteers have donated over 172,886 hours of service to the theatre. At today’s Massachusetts volunteer equivalency rate, that translates to over $5 million of in-kind services.

The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ Team provides exemplary service in maintaining the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, a treasured musical instrument.

Organist Len Beyersdorfer shares his talent during pre-show concerts and theatre tours. Don Phipps, Bruce Hager and John Phipps take excellent care of the organ, so it always sounds its best, especially during our silent movies and our annual production of A Christmas Carol.

This year’s Volunteer of the Year Award honors Mildred Anderson for her outstanding contributions to The Hanover Theatre’s volunteer program. Mildred began volunteering with us in the 2008 inaugural season. Before volunteering with the theatre, Mildred worked for The Hanover Insurance Company in the statistical data management department for 35 years. In addition to volunteering with the theatre, Mildred volunteers for the women’s group at her church and is also a member of the Rutland Cultural Council.

This year alone, Mildred volunteered as an event usher at over 63 shows and contributed over 235 hours working as an administrative volunteer. She is a tremendous asset to the theatre and always goes above and beyond to help. Her dedication, passion and kind heart has made her an invaluable contributor to the theatre. We are so grateful to have such a dedicated person on our team. Mildred’s enthusiasm and creativity truly exemplify the admirable qualities of our outstanding volunteers and their desire to help us grow and thrive as an organization.
