COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
2018-2019 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
MESSAGE FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS Our Vision Statement: TIED Together, Moving Forward
“Our intention is to faithfully and actively represent the engaged student body by providing Transparency, fostering Inclusivity, setting Endurance, and promoting Diversity through visible outreach, creative initiatives, and dedicated teamwork among all branches of the SGA.” In December of 2017, we sat down for the first time in Cool Beans to discuss the prospect of running to be SGA Co-Presidents together. “More accessible to all students,” “a diverse team,” and “thoughtful and intentional presence at events and initiatives” were some of the main visions we shared. This shared set of goals and interests quickly transformed into a strong campaign team who set out to create, define, and live out the promise of being TIED Together, Moving Forward. We would not have been elected without the help of this group of students who shared this same mission and vision for the SGA. After being elected, many former co-presidents told us, “Your year will not be what you think it will be.” The 2018-2019 school year was fraught with peril, but the students who we served were our guiding light. We are so grateful to have served such an incredible student body and team of individuals who continue to push us, inspire us, and motivate us to be better versions of ourselves. The accomplishments of the 2018-2019 SGA would not have been possible without the dynamic Cabinet, Senate, Class Councils, and Judicial Council that we had the pleasure of serving alongside. Your dedication to being TIED Together, Moving Forward has propelled the SGA and called on Holy Cross to be a better version of itself. It was the most gratifying experience of our Holy Cross careers to be your co-presidents this year. Thanks, for everything.
Meredith Coolidge SGA Co-President
Adrian Cacho SGA Co-President

PROVIDING TRANSPARENCY At the beginning of the term, our goals for this cornerstone were: ● Implement SGA Community Hours in Cool Beans and Sippin’ with a Senator in Cafe Babel/CB2. ● Create an SGA Podcast, Faculty-Staff Subscription, and SGA Weekly Skimm. ● Establish an ad-hoc committee (Media Team) under the SGA Press Secretary to support the position and encourage creative ways to disperse information. ● Form strong relationships with all members of the community to help bridge gaps in communication. ● Ensure that students know that SGA is not only an extracurricular to be involved with, but a resource for campus advocacy. Our own initiatives to be more transparent: SGA Media Team After observing the myriad of responsibilities for the communications role of the SGA, we decided to create an ad-hoc committee under the Press Secretary that would serve as members of the SGA in as-needed responsibilities. Nick Jones ‘19 interviewed and selected five talented students to serve as members of the Media Team, including a speechwriter/SGA Skimm producer, social media manager, podcaster, photographer, and videographer. The SGA Skimm and SGA Podcast Produced by Paige Cohen ‘21, The SGA Skimm is a weekly newsletter to the community. The Skimm includes Cabinet updates, Senate updates, events, and a link to the SGA Podcast when new episodes are available. The SGA Podcast is produced by Matt Freije, with four episodes released over the year. Each episode interrogates one “story” on campus, including the politics of Kimball, the student sit-in in February, and the Engage Summit, co-hosted by the co-presidents and featuring voices from students, and administrators all over campus. Co-Presidents/Cabinet’s “Community Hours” In an effort to be more accessible, Cabinet members held their rebranded Office Hours, called “Community Hours” every week in Cool Beans for all members of the community to voice comments, questions, and concerns to the SGA. Sippin’ With A Senator, RSO Office Hours, and Off-Campus Advocacy The Senate worked to establish an off-campus committee for juniors who are in the process of trying to liveoff-campus for their senior year and create a committee of students that will serve as the voice for the off campus community. They also created RSO office hours and continued Sippin’ with a Senator. Faculty-Staff Subscription We sent out a message to faculty, staff, and other administrators and received 166 responses to receive communication from at least one of our mailing lists. page 6
Throughout a year full of challenging episodes, the entire SGA team has put great effort into working with administrators to be more transparent. Here are some examples of our collaborations to ensure transparency throughout the College: Date

FOSTERING INCLUSIVITY At the beginning of the term, our goals for this cornerstone were: ● Revamp the SGA Intern Program. ● Provide more robust outreach at Gateways, Odyssey, Passport and other first-year recruitment events. ● Encourage collaboration and actively support RSOs, MSOs, and IBOs on campus. ● Include all branches of the SGA in the Transition Brunch and Fall Retreat to foster strong intra-SGA relationships. Visible Outreach - At Summer Gateways Orientation, SGA Co-President Meredith Coolidge and Senator-at-Large Noah Sisk took part in the Crusader Contacts Browsing Session and shared information about the SGA to prospective students. -
During Passport, SGA Co-President Adrian Cacho and SGA Co-Officer of Diversity Manny Trejo communicated with students participating in the program about the SGA and other involvements around campus.
-
SGA Co-Presidents Adrian Cacho and Meredith Coolidge also traveled to the Joyce Contemplative Center to present about the SGA to students participating in Odyssey (a one-week program for students who are first generation to college, people of color, or eligible for Pell Grant).
-
The SGA sponsored the Whoopie Wagon during Fall Gateways Orientation to make the Class of 2022 more aware about the SGA.
-
During Fall Gateways Orientation the SGA was also involved with

Pause to Ponder - Invited by Class of 2022 Class Chaplains (Marty Kelly and Sam Lovett), SGA CoPresident Adrian Cacho ‘19 and SGA Director of Spiritual Life Courtney Esteves ‘19 gave student leader testimonies at each of the three Pause to Ponder sessions of Fall Gateways. This was both a good way to connect with the first-year students as members of the SGA and also a powerful way to convey a message about the importance of the spiritual life element of a life at Holy Cross.
-
Sader Nation - SGA Co-Officer of Diversity Mithra Salmassi ‘19 was one of the co-hosts at this event, held in the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex which serves as the official induction for first-year students into Sader Nation. SGA Co-Presidents Adrian and Meredith also introduced themselves at this event and reminded first-year students about how the SGA is a resource.

FOSTERING INCLUSIVITY Events and Collaborations -
Talking Circles & SGA Speaking at Masses (Co-sponsored with the Chaplains’ Office) Courtney Esteves helped promote student attendance at talking circles (held in September) surrounding sexual assault on and off campus. She also made announcements during weekend on-campus Catholic masses about this and a statement from the Chaplains’ Office/SGA regarding our condemnation of clerical sexual abuse.
-
Voices of Concern: A Dialogue on Building Community (Co-sponsored with the MPEs)
-
ENGAGE Summit Following a bias-related incident on campus and the establishment of the Instagram account Sexual Assault on the Hill, a large petition to cancel classes, practices, and other events for one day circulated around the community. Its chief objective was to be the first step in creating an inclusive and respectful community that celebrates and supports its members. Nearly every office and department on campus came together to put on the ENGAGE Summit: Where do we go from here? The Summit took place on November 16 with nearly 50 sessions offered by students, administrators, faculty, and staff. An estimated 1,500 people attended.
-
Oxfam Hunger Banquet (Co-sponsored with the Office of Multicultural Education)
-
Coffee Date Challenge (Co-sponsored with the Chaplains’ Office) In partnership with Marybeth Kearns-Barrett from the Chaplains’ Office, SGA Director of Spiritual Life Courtney Esteves helped get the Coffee Date Challenge off the ground. She organized the “match-making” system in which those who sign up online are randomly matched with one another. The Coffee Date Challenge is open to all members of our community, and the goal is that members of various sectors of our campus can come together, across differences of all sorts, in meaningful conversation that transcend the surface level that our conversations can often get stuck on. These one-on-one conversations will foster new connections and promote greater empathy and understanding of different life experiences on campus.

Oath of Inclusion Task Force (Residence Hall Association)
-
Sexual Assault Awareness Month SGA Co-Directors of Social Justice Adeline Gutierrez Nuñez ‘19 and Katherine Lenahan ‘19 organized a poster campaign, worked to bring Deun Ivory to campus through IGNITE (the SGA co-sponsored the speaker alongside IGNITE, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, SGA diversity, Title IX, CASA and SOCA), and co-sponsored Feminist Forum’s Take Back the Night

SETTING ENDURANCE Goals for this cornerstone: ● ● ●
Refresh the SGA Intern and Clerk curriculum and establish more networking opportunities. Create the Jesuit Student Government Alliance after we attended the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference. Fortify existing programming through co-sponsorship.
Continued/expanded SGA Initiatives and Co-Sponsorships - NYT and WSJ subscriptions for students - Cura Personalis Period. - Mix ‘n’ Mingle - 6 Agape Lattes - 10 SGA Games of the Week - Expanded hours in the Libraries and Stein Hall during Finals Week - De-Stress with a Dog partnership with the Counseling Center and Libraries - Fresh-Check Day - Poppin’ Tags Clothing Swap (co-sponsored with EcoAction) - Giving Tuesday and the 175th Birthday Hashtag Mosaic - Clothing Drive for Burncoat High School (with Bioribel Castillo ‘19) - Know Our City, Love Our City shuttles (sponsored by the Provost’s Office and Student Affairs) SGA Senate Clerk/Cabinet Intern Program SGA Clerkship Coordinator Noah Sisk ‘21 and SGA Director of Interns Grace Burke ‘21 worked together to strengthen the existing Clerk and Intern Programs to be more diverse, educational, and provide greater understanding for first-years and sophomores in SGA. In addition to providing support, they also hosted multiple networking events. 87% of the participants in the Clerk/Intern program will continue as officers of the SGA next year, with two (Caylie and John) already having mid-year promotions. Jesuit Student Government Alliance (JSGA) After meeting other student government presidents at the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference in July at LeMoyne College, Adrian and Meredith became founding members of the JSGA. The JSGA is the formal association of all sitting undergraduate student government presidents of all Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) member and associate member institutions. They utilized this group for support, collaboration, and ideas for initiatives, releasing three joint-statements and attending the inaugural JSGA Winter Summit at Saint Louis University in January. Meredith served as the JSGA Communications Chair. MOMENTUM18 Voter Registration Drive Co-Directors of Social Justice Adeline Gutierrez Nuñez ‘19 and Katherine Lenahan ‘19 organized Momentum18, which was a non-partisan SGA initiative aimed at civic engagement, regardless of political party. We collaborated with all politically-affiliated student groups on campus in addition to other RSOs to promote voter registration for all students on campus. On Tuesday, Sept. 25, which is National Voter Registration Day, SGA and partners had tables all over campus helping students register to vote and request absentee ballots. During the February 2018 elections for SGA, we had a record 68% of students turnout, while only about 18% of young people turned out for the national 2014 midterm elections. “Momentum” refers to continuing the efforts from last year’s record student government elections turnout. It is in no way affiliated with any political party. page 12

SETTING ENDURANCE College’s 175th Birthday Party Celebration Adrian and Meredith co-hosted the 175th Birthday Party Celebration, a picnic on Kimball quad with performances from SCONE, the HC Band, the Rhythm Nation Stepperz, and more. Importantly, this event was zero-waste! Meat-Free Monday: Holy Cross Takes A Stance SGA Director of Campus Services and Dining Izzi Lambrecht ‘19 worked with Dining Services to make Monday, October 29th the first-ever Meat-Free Monday in Kimball. Meat-Free Monday aims to provide awareness about the impact that consuming meat has on our environment. Class Officers’ Fundraisers and Events The Classes of 2022, 2021, and 2020 all put on various fundraisers to reduce the cost of Senior Week for their senior years. The Class of 2022 hosted a Semi-Formal, the Class of 2021 sold t-shirts and hosted a Black and White Ball, and the Class of 2020 raised money on Pi Day. The Class of 2019 organized Senior Ball and Senior Week. Share Your Magis: The Senior Exit Talks SGA Co-President Meredith Coolidge ‘19 worked with Prof. Rob Bellin, the Director of Vocare, to establish the inaugural Share Your Magis: The Senior Exit Talks event. Share Your Magis is a competition for graduating seniors who will share 3 minute-talks aimed at a non-specialist audience about an aspect of their Holy Cross experience. Purple Goes Green Week SGA Director of Environmental Concerns Claire Fox ‘21 worked closely with EcoAction and other campus partners to pull of Purple Goes Green Week. Events included the Repair & Reuse Fair, Free Coffee Day, Ban the Bottle Day” An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power “ screening and succulent giveaway, a clothing swap and the Eco-Action Farmer’s Market. Judicial Council Initiatives The Judicial Council focused on four main initiatives this year: 1) an extensive bylaw review 2) the establishment of a Judicial Council Intern Program 3) student parking ticket rework and 4) work with the Office of Student Integrity and Community Standards. These projects result in eight new bylaw changes, quicker parking ticket appeals, and an increased influence in the transparency around the process of student conduct cases. EDGE Apartments Housing SGA Co-Directors of Residence Life and Housing Chris Whamond ‘19 and Nikeitha Hallman ‘19 worked with the Office of Residence Life and Housing to find the EDGE Housing as a viable option for some Holy Cross students. Dozens of Holy Cross students will be in these apartments next year as a result in the College’s influx in students in the classes of 2021 and 2022. page 14

PROMOTING DIVERSITY Our goals for this cornerstone were: ● Ensure our Cabinet reflected the diverse student body and highlighted various aspects of student life. ● Work closely with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to institute a GSWS center. ● Seek out opportunities to be more intentional and intersectional in our advocacy efforts. ● Begin shifting “men and women for and with others” to “people for and with others” to reflect our evolving understanding of gender. Freedom of Expression Task Force First Friday Art Series: A Showcase of Pride Students Organizing for Community and Advocacy (SOCA) SGA Director of Student Outreach Marcellis Perkins ‘19 identified a need for more collaboration and uniformity for MSOs and IBOs. He created this uniform organization amongst MSOs to create an extensive network for financial and communal support. These groups included: BSU, LASO, CASA, DESI, POW, ASIA, HCF1RST, FemFo, MeCha, Pride, and Latinidad Identidad. Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower with Dr. Brittney Cooper (Co-sponsored with Africana Studies, GSWS) Vigil in Solidarity (Co-sponsored with the Chaplains’ Office) Unity Week - Dark Speculum: African Americans, Science, and the Feminine Ideal (Harriet Washington) (Africana Studies & GSWS) - Women’s Appreciation Banquet- The Men’s Involvement Coalition (MIC) recognized 2-3 women on campus (faculty, administrators, staff) who have supported men’s development and success on campus. - Men of Color Athletes presented a screening of “The Hub” a taped conversation about the experiences of students of color, mostly athletes, on Holy Cross’ campus. - “Why I Need Feminism” Campaign (Feminist Forum) - Keynote speaker: DeRay McKesson, a civil rights activist primarily focused on issues of innovation, equity, and justice. - Colorism in Asia (DESI x POW) was a conversation held in the Hub about colorism in Asia. - “Yappie: The (Re)Model Minority” was screening of the Yappie series, a comedy-drama which centers on the Asian-American experience. - First Generation College Student Summit (HCF1RST Scholars) - R.O.O.T.S. Showcase: Karibbean Kingdom - LGBTQIA+ Visibility Project (Co-sponsorship with PRIDE) Community Conversation with Samora Pinderhughes (Co-sponsored with Arts Transcending Borders) and co-hosted by SGA Co-President Adrian Cacho ‘19) page 16

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND THANKS The Holy Cross Student Government Association would not be nearly as effective without the support and guidance of so many people in the HC community and beyond. We would like to give a special shoutout to Louis Hurtado ‘19, Ashley Nicole MoralesGarcia ‘19, Kara Cuzzone ‘19, Marie Therese Kane ‘18, Noah Sisk ‘21, Adeline Gutierrez ‘19, Courtney Esteves ‘19, Emma Powell ‘20, Maddy Glynn ‘18, and Mary McGregor ‘19 for believing in us from the very beginning. To our families, who understood when we had to take a call during a holiday, go back to school early from break, and who supported us every step of the way. A special thank you to Chris Holguin and Sandy Burke for taking our messages at any hour, constantly checking in on our whole selves, and being incredible sounding-boards. Your commitment to us and to the SGA is fundamental. To Donnie, Maggie, Caroline, and Christian, for passing off and carrying the torch. To the members of the 2018-2019 Jesuit Student Government Alliance (JSGA) for your solidarity, kinship, advice, and support.
