MESSAGE FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS Welcome, Last May, we set out on our term with a four-pronged vision: to foster a collaborative and inclusive Student Government that works to improve the student experience, prioritize transparency, and place the needs of students at the center of our advocacy efforts.

Through our many initiatives this year, whether it was securing state-of-theart equipment for the field house, opening up pipelines for students of all backgrounds to participate in SGA, or increasing tuition transparency, we are pleased to report that, thanks to you, we succeeded in achieving this vision.

This annual report is a celebration of these achievements we made together.

It is precisely because of SGA’s close collaborative relationship with College administration, support from faculty, and above all, the faith and trust of the student body, that we were able to soar to new heights this year. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

We hope you find pride in the fact that, together, we achieved. Furthermore, we hope that this report encourages you to continue working for the success of the College. Mindful of that part of the College’s mission statement that calls us to “share in the life and governance of the College,” we encourage all members of the Holy Cross community to work together to make Holy Cross the place we know it can be.

We will continue to be on this journey with you, this time as alumni. It was the highest honor of our four years here to serve you as SGA Co-Presidents, and we look forward to enjoying the College’s continued success together.

COLLABORATIVE AND INCLUSIVE This cornerstone of our vision focused on collaborating with offices and student groups around campus on events and initiatives that would be beneficial to the student body as a whole. We collaborated on over 55 events and initiatives with 42 groups around the College. You will see in the timeline below that the SGA Cabinet and Senate collaborated on several initiatives this year, and that our Unity Week programming was one of the highlights of the year.

Goals for this cornerstone were: • • • • •

Maintain open lines of communication between the SGA Senate and Executive Cabinet.

Conduct joint initiatives between the SGA Senate and the Executive Cabinet.

Hold two joint sessions of the Student Government Association.

Form SGA Standing Committee on Diversity to examine how to make SGA more inclusive.

Plan Unity Week programming that engages and educates students on present day issues.

Diversity and Inclusion in SGA

Another part of this cornerstone is Inclusion. This year’s SGA sought to open up pipelines for students of all backgrounds to join Student Government.

We held a town hall on the topic of Diversity and Inclusion in SGA on November 13, 2017 in Levi’s Browsing Room. The event was attended by all members of SGA and several students from multicultural and identity based student organizations. Many great ideas came out of the town hall.

SGA pursued the following initiatives this year to increase diversity and inclusion in student government: • Established a $500 fund for the purpose of co-presidential campaign activities, so that no student may be barred from running for SGA’s highest office because of financial need • Mandated required diversity and cultural competency training for SGA members at our annual retreat on September 7 and in March during Unity Week • Educated faculty members and academic advisors about SGA opportunities during Faculty Assembly meetings, so they can encourage students they advise to participate in SGA • Recording demographic information on students running and applying for SGA positions, to better gauge which types of students are not joining SGA • Planning an SGA info session for Passport and Odyssey program participants • Held SGA lobby tables so students could ask current SGA members how to join SGA and what the time commitment is • Established a clerkship program in the SGA Senate, to go in hand with the SGA Cabinet internship program, to expose first year students to SGA Page 5

Multi-faith Prayer Service.

• Created a standing committee on Diversity and Inclusion within SGA, with the task of advising the SGA Officer of Diversity on diversity initiatives and making recommendations to SGA about increasing inclusion and multicultural competency.

• As part of Unity Week, we ran a “Love Your Labels” campaign to celebrate the hidden and unhidden identities of Holy Cross community members that make us unique.

SGA also hosted a historic Unity Week keynote speaker, New York Times bestseller and cultural critic Roxane Gay, who spoke to students about her experience as a feminist, woman of color, and sexual assault survivor, and her career as a writer. The theme for Unity Week this year was “Bridging the Gap,” and aimed at bringing students of dissimilar backgrounds together to engage in dialogue across difference.

IMPROVING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE Goals for this cornerstone were:

• Evaluate how the study abroad/semester away programs meet the needs of students.

• Assess the quality of our residence halls and wellness facilities, especially laundry facilities and the temporary field house arrangement.

• Support the College’s efforts to expand career services and networking opportunities.

• Continue the effort to improve the housing selection process.

• Undertake meaningful and effective sustainability and environmental initiatives.

• Undertake service and philanthropic initiatives.

Evaluating Study Abroad and Semester Away

Under the leadership of SGA Director of Academic Concerns Ally Yoeckel ‘19 and SGA Chief of Staff Julia Palmerino ‘18, the SGA commissioned a survey to evaluate the semester away programs in New York City and Washington, D.C. We surveyed the fall 2016, spring 2017, and fall 2018 participants of these programs to gauge their experience with academics, internships, transportation, living arrangements, and cost of living in these cities.

SGA produced two reports detailing our findings and delivered them to the J.D. Power Center for Liberal Arts in the World administrators in January. Among the recommendations our reports made were offering transportation stipends to offset the cost of commuting to internships, establishing relationships with libraries closer to student housing so students can have a convenient space to work on their capstone/ thesis, and bolstering the Center for Career Development’s involvement in student internship searches. Each of these recommendations will be implemented over the next year.

Assessing the Quality of Our Residence Halls and Wellness Facilities

SGA Director of Residence Life Hannah Ciullo ‘20 was hard at work with the residence halls this year, advocating for the installation of stall doors in select residence hall bathrooms. These doors will eliminate the need for shower curtains, which have been attracting mold, and increasing privacy and security in the residence halls. Some stall doors will be installed over the summer in 2018, with other doors coming gradually in future academic years.

The Field House was one of our biggest focuses this year. When the Smith Wellness Center at the Hart Center closed in June, 2017, the non-athlete student fitness facilities transitioned to one of the courts in the Field House. The field house had a number of problems: the equipment was old and dilapidated, the field house was crowded with athletic equipment being stored there, the building was not secure, and it lacked adequate accommodations for exercising, like mirrors. SGA, under the leadership of Director of Health and Safety Janna Hearty ‘20, worked to eliminate each of these issues.

We contributed $25,000 towards the purchase of new treadmills, bikes, free weights, benches, mats, and aerobic equipment, which will was installed on May 2, 2018. We advocated for increased security measures, including swipe access and the addition of a worker who could monitor the space for safety. These measures will be installed over the summer. Lastly, we advocated for the installation of mirrors, which were put in place in February.

Expanding Career Services and Networking

SGA co-sponsored a “How to Network” workshop for seniors on September 11, 2017.

It was attended by well over 100 seniors, who heard from experts about how to meet connections at networking events, sell yourself, and land an internship/job from your network. SGA also advocated to have juniors participating in the New York City Semester Program invited to the President’s Council luncheon in November, 2017.

Students reported that this was a great opportunity for networking and to connect with alumni in the New York City area.

Improving Housing Selection

SGA focused on the off-campus housing application process this year. We co-sponsored two off-campus housing information sessions with the Office of Residence Life and Housing, to educate juniors and sophomores about the qualifications and regulations of living off campus. These sessions increased transparency about the off campus housing application process and selection, and encouraged students not to sign leases before they have been approved to live off campus. A clear delivery of expectations contributed to a smooth application process this year, with 100% of juniors who applied to live off campus their senior year receiving acceptance to do so.

Meaningful and Effective Sustainability

Under the leadership of Director of Environmental Concerns CJ Aprea ‘18, the SGA formed an environmental concerns committee to serve as an umbrella group for all environmentally-focused student groups. This allowed for amazing collaboration between SGA and groups like EcoAction and HC Fossil Free. We thank these organizations for the work they did to make this campus cleaner.

In the fall, this committee implemented a composting program in Williams Hall, whereby senior apartments were given composting bins for their leftover food scraps.

This is a trail run and will hopefully lead to composting across campus. At the end of the Spring semester, EcoAction sponsored a “Trash to Treasure” initiative that allows students to exchange their unwanted dorm supplies for others.

Finally, the annual Purple Goes Green week was the best and most extensive SGA has ever seen. Purple Goes Green week programming included: • A clothing swap • A community clean up day • A trash audit on the Hoval • A farmer’s market • The first ever sustainability summit, hosted by Waste Management, which brought together campus leaders across Worcester for training and collaboration on green initiatives.

Service and Philanthropy

The SGA undertook several major service and philanthropic initiatives this year: • Following the hurricanes that ravaged the Gulf Coast and Puerto Rico, and the earthquake in Mexico earlier this year, the SGA organized the HC Disaster Relief Fund, which raised over $2,600 in three months that went towards underserved communities in Florida, Houston, and Puerto Rico.

• The SGA gave nearly 80 hours of service at the annual Working for Worcester build day, where we volunteered to clean up a stretch of the trail along Patch Reservoir in Worcester.

• The SGA supported an initiative from the Worcester fire department to sweep offcampus houses and check for the functionality of their fire detectors. We examined detectors in nearly 30 homes, with both student and non-student residents, to ensure their safety and fire prevention.

• The SGA organized a food drive, in conjunction with Pax Christi, to gather donations for Mustard Seed and the South Worcester Neighborhood Improvement Coalition. We gathered nearly 200 pounds of food donations and delivered them for distribution at these community organizations in time for Christmas.

• The SGA distributed Christmas gift baskets to residents of the College hill community in conjunction with the Office of Government and Community Relations.

• SGA members participated in a 5K walk/run in memory of Henry Carr ‘19, a student at Holy Cross that passed away after a brave battle with cancer over the summer. Money raised is benefitting the 15-40 connection, a local non-profit that provides support to patients undergoing treatment for cancer.

• Publish weekly co-presidential video addresses to update the campus on SGA initiatives.

• Continue the monthly SGASkimm publication.

• Support the SGA Senate’s public relations efforts.

STUDENT-CENTERED ADVOCACY Goals for this cornerstone were: • Work closely with the Office of Assessment and Research to gauge student opinion on current and potential SGA initiatives.

• Use these insights to deliver data-driven arguments to relevant administrators in order to start conversations about necessary improvements to the Holy Cross community.

• Leverage SGA Senate and Executive Cabinet outreach personnel (Directors of Student Outreach and Student Outreach and Advocacy Committee) to connect with the student body in pinpointing the needs of students.

SGA conducted 4 comprehensive surveys this year that informed our advocacy initiatives:

1. We surveyed students on the availability of shuttles to Boston, Providence, and sites around Worcester, to inform what shuttle services we should offer to students 2. We surveyed students to gauge their thoughts on meal swipes in Crossroads with adjusted service hours. 86% of students were in support of a proposal like this. These insights were delivered to the Director of Auxiliary Services as part of a study to examine the feasibility of implementing meal swipes in Crossroads.

3. We gathered insights on the experience of Washington and New York Semester program participants, to see where the College could better serve them and bolster their experiential learning. These surveys informed reports that were delivered to these program offices recommending enhancements to the semester programs, including transportation stipends, more robust thesis/capstone advising, and connection to internship and career resources.

4. We gauged the academic experience of study abroad students to gain insight about the academic rigor of Holy Cross’s many study abroad programs. These will be incorporated into a report and delivered to the Provost’s Office by the end of the academic year.

Co-Director of Social Justice Katie Bowles ‘18 conducted a year-long comprehensive research project to evaluate the feasibility of a social justice common area requirement as part of Holy Cross’s core academic curriculum. This study compared similar academic programs at Holy Cross’s peer institutions, and recommended a course of action for Holy Cross. The study will be delivered to the Provost’s Office by the end of the academic year.

Finally, SGA conducted two town halls, during which participants had the opportunity to ask questions on topics important to students.

1. The Town Hall on Diversity and Inclusion in SGA was conducted on November 13, 2017 in Levi’s Browsing Room. The purpose of this town hall was to gather ideas on how to open pipelines for more groups of students to join SGA. Many ideas were gathered at the town hall, which informed the Diversity and Inclusion agenda we implemented this year.

2. The Tuition Transparency Town Hall offered students the opportunity to ask questions of key College administrators about how their tuition dollars are spent at the College. Vice President of Administration and Finance Dotty Hauver and Vice President of Advancement Tracy Barlok answered questions about the construction of the new buildings around campus, the 4.25% tuition increase, budgets for academic programs, College fundraising, the endowment, and many more. The ideas discussed at this town hall informed SGA’s advocacy in the Field House, where we were able to work with Dotty Hauver to secure new equipment for the space.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS Page 13

We recommend that administrators of the College and/or future SGA administrations undertake the following initiatives across five broad areas: residence life, student life, academics, college governance, and community relations, equity, and sustainability:

Residence Life

1. The next capital campaign should focus exclusively on building new residence halls on Easy Street. They have been left off the capital campaign agenda because they are not revenue drivers for the College in the way a new athletic facility is, but the residence halls are getting to the point where we imagine they are deterring students from coming to Holy Cross, which could negatively impact the College’s bottom line. New housing is a must.

2. The College should also look into expanding the availability of parking around campus.

3. Increase the cap of the number of students permitted to live off campus substantially. Students should be free to choose their living arrangement by senior year, and not be subject to a cap that guarantees a certain amount of room and board revenue for the College.

Student Life

4. Improve access to students’ meal plans. Maintain dining facilities that can offer late-night swipe purchases of meals. If this requires a renovation and expansion of Crossroads, consider doing so.

5. Continue to evaluate the remuneration package for resident assistants. This year, the package changed to a grant in the amount of a standard room on the RA’s financial aid package which, in some cases, reduces the financial aid that some RAs receive. This adversely affects high need, low income RAs who are often students of color. A more equitable RA package needs to be implemented.

6. Build out an RSO liaison program within SGA. The SGA Senate and Cabinet should collaborate on support to RSOs. Streamline the RSO re-recognition process and reform the mandatory RSO training to shorten it and incorporate multicultural competency training.

Academics

7. Expand the availability of study spaces around campus. Evaluate the need for so many stacks in Dinand and consider installing new study spaces with tables, chairs, white boards, and private study rooms. Offer coffee in Dinand.

8. Reevaluate the College’s core academic curriculum. Add an experiential learning opportunity as one requirement towards graduation. Consider implementing a social justice or community based learning academic requirement.

9. Expand networking to students earlier. Run how to network workshops for sophomores, and offer more networking opportunities on campus. Leverage alumni networks in Washington, DC and New York City to gain those students access to alumni during their semester.

College Governance

10. Continue to include students in the governance of the College. Appoint students to all working groups commissioned by the President of the College, consulting with the SGA co-presidents about who those appointees may be. Add the co-presidents as voting members of the board of trustees.

11. Formalize a position statement regarding freedom of expression on campus and craft policies governing freedom of speech around that. The College should commit itself in this statement to academic and intellectual freedom across a spectrum of ideas and ideologies. Students should be represented as much as faculty in a discussion surrounding the College’s position on freedom of expression.

12. Issue a full report to students that describes the work and outcomes of the three presidential working groups evaluating admissions, student life, and fundraising/capital projects.

Community Relations, Equity, and Sustainability

13. Conduct a community standards campaign to educate students about being good stewards of their homes and the environment on and off campus.

Discourage vandalism and disruptive behavior. Undertake service projects in the College hill community to bolser relationships with families that live around the College.

14. Continue the menstrual equity initiative started by SGA this year that aims to provide feminine products at no cost in bathrooms around campus.

15. Create a sustainability director position as part of the College administration.

Currently, the director of facilities oversees sustainability initiatives at the College, which is becoming too much work for one person to do. Establishing this position, even part time, would demonstrate the College’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship
