The Bear Park South and Boomers locations were within the first phase of the bookstores expansion project. The project involved visualization and re-branding of the bookstores image, retail design, and fixture specifications. The use of Missouri State University’s bear logo and their school colors were an obvious choice. The cash wrap became the constant object that would be featured at each location, but flexible enough to respond to each specific location. It became conceptualized as the candy, the juicy thing that is identified with the bookstores. Architecturally, this was achieved by a hard steel shell, perforated with the bear logo, powder coated and backlit. The cash wrap contained a colorful glossy inside incorporating the missouri state maroon.

Missouri State University Glass Hall Renovation + Addition Glass Hall is approximately 173,000 square feet and was built over 30 years ago. The building has become dated and contains few areas exposed to natural daylight. The new design approach will completely overhaul the building, punching through the solid precast walls to be replaced with large expanses of glass. The 37,000 addition will attach to the east of the building and contain a large 4-story atrium to help pull in even more daylight. The classes currently offered at the college of business have also changed over the years. They require more lab style settings to house a more hands-on approach to teaching. The upgrades will make way for mock interview rooms, a financial markets lab, and an advertising agency. To further promote the student experience multiple collaboration zones will be sprinkled throughout the existing building as well as the addition. Areas for students to gather and kick back in between classes will also be incorporated.

Along with the added views to the exterior, way finding elements will help reinforce the new vision for the school. Each department color will be incorporated strategically to help orient occupants and emphasize important spaces. More open, inviting department head entries will project slightly into the corridors and be visible from each end of the long corridors.

Missouri State University Pummill Hall Pummill Hall was originally designed by a noteworthy local architect, Richard P. Stahl and built in 1957. Stahl’s work is iconic within the Ozarks and recognized to contain strong mid-century modern elements. This building, along with many of his other works provide beautiful site specific responses and innovations evident within this era. The renovation of Pummill Hall is an extensive remodeling of all floors. The interior will accommodate the Hospitality and Restaurant Administration department, the Social Work department, with the second floor dedicated to classrooms. The building will be brought up to current code requirements including a new compliant elevator and stairwells. A new energy efficient exterior current wall system will replace the original. The south curtain wall incorporates an additional layer of protection with a ceramic frit. The frit pattern is a combination of Missouri State University’s logo along with inspirational verb adverb combinations. A vibrant new interior balanced with exposed concrete surfaces will give new life to the building. Yellows range from lighter to darker up each level with splashes of green in the student zones. An energetic pink will be used to highlight the existing simple, expressive guard rails, that delicately wrap up through the building.

Jasper School District Addition + FEMA
Jasper is about 30 minutes outside of Joplin and located in an area prone to tornados. The school district received FEMA grant money to build a safe room to help protect people within the community during such awful natural disasters. The safe room is intended to protect the population for approximately 2-24 hours and provide basic needs for the occupants until the tornado passes. However, the building has many more responsibilities. The safe room itself is used for physical education classes throughout the school day, a cafeteria during the lunch hour, and a regulation basketball gym for middle school children by night. In addition to the FEMA / multipurpose space a new school kitchen, football locker rooms, an enclosed connection to the existing grade school, and new entry/ plaza for the football field have been provided. Architecturally, the exterior of the large precast panels have been disguised with a subtle texture to soften it’s presence in the mainly brick campus. The texture was conceptualized form the school’s mascot, the eagle. It is often referred to as the ‘eagle’s nest’.

Jeffries Elementary Addition + FEMA The project consists of a new Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Tornado Safe Room, a new administrative office wing, and new site circulation modes. The FEMA Safe Room doubles as a multi-purpose gymnasium and performance space capable of satisfying the current and future needs of the school and the community. The new administrative office wing includes a light-filled security entrance and facilities, enabling the school to meet the modern demands of health and service. The site development includes: new driveways combined with bicycle and pedestrian paths, new parking with allocated spaces to promote carpooling and low-emitting vehicles, and a new front entry plaza to provide a safe and secure student drop-off area. The addition received LEED Silver recognition and incorporates numerous sustainable elements.
