From The Editor An Ambassador of Curvaceousness I have been doing this (magazine) for quite some time now and I must say it hasn’t been plain sailing. It has been a grueling 2 years and I’m glad that I’m going strong. If it hadn’t been for prayer and God I doubt I’d still be doing what I’m doing. As I reflect on the events that have led where I am with this publication, HOT BLOG!!!

I am humbled. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through since the begin; from those who worked personally on the project to those who merely gave suggestions on future articles and stories. I would like to thank everyone who has sent through messages via email, Facebook,Tweeter, complementing me on what a great job I do. To all the past and present team members (...) that made this dream a reality, THANK YOU. To my mother for bringing me to this earth to do what I’m doing, thank you and may your soul rest in peace.

To pops (even though you didn’t know what I’m trying to do) and the family for your support and understanding.

To friends and colleagues thanks for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself.

This is not only a magazine, but a story of a man who is trying to change the world and how people think.

For a while full figured women in South Africa and the world over have been regarded as less beautiful and unsexy. Well, things have changed dramatically; we have blogs, magazines, radio and TV shows, clothing labels and modeling agencies dedicated to full figured women. Who would of thought? You know when I started this magazine way back in 2010, I didn’t even know a single fashion designer out there that catered for plus size women. Nowadays there’s tons of them and you could safely say big women are spoilt for choice. A revolution has been started; a Full Figured/ Curvy/Plus size/BIG revolution. Are you part of that revolution?

In this edition of BIG & Beautiful we interview fashion diva Mihlali Gqada who has her own clothing line for full figured women; we also show you how you can determine your shape and how to dress for it. We also show you how to survive the winter season. This issue of BIG & Beautiful is bigger and better and hope it will entertain, inform and inspire you.

F

rom my supporters that have been following my journey from the very beginning remember my strolls down the runway and even my jabs at “glamour modeling”. I tried almost everything to get my foot into the “Entertainment world”. I never considered myself the “Glamour Model Type” or even a “Runway Model” but in an industry that “was” very limited for the “CURVY GIRL” I felt it was best option for me, at the time. I tried my best to fit into the mold of the glamour world, but didn’t feel completely comfortable! Then I made a mediocre attempt to do “Fashion Modeling” which was a complete FAIL! I share this story to tell you “Don’t sacrifice who you are to be someone you aren’t”! I don’t judge anyone that is a glamour model, because at the end of the day, I made a lot of connections and did do a few notable magazine spreads. However, glamour modeling didn’t allow my TRUE talents to show!

I had a hard time identifying with the other models because I didn’t look like them. I was tall,muscular, thick, and curvy! In addition, I had a voice, was intelligent, and an innovator! I wanted to “break down barriers”, and

“inspire people” and be appreciated for who I was and NOT who I was pretending to be! I will never shrink, lose weight or muscles, soften up my features, get plastic surgery to be accepted! I am who I am “TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT”!!

In essence, this Powerhouse Movement was implemented to inspire women and men to “BE YOURSELF” and to never compromise your worth to mold into the mass! I love being a Fitness Guru, but I also love being a POWERHOUSE! I’m a Entrepreneur (The Founder and Creator of Powerhouse Physiques, LLC.), Fitness Expert, Motivational Speaker, Actress, Writer, and Model! I DO IT ALL!! I realized a few years ago, in order to maintain longevity in the business that you have to wear many hats! I share my story to let you know that you get further in life by “BEING TRUE TO YOURSELF” ! MIHLALI GQADA TALKS TO US ABOUT BEING BIG AND FABULOUS, AND HER FASHION LABEL FOR PLUS SIZE WOMEN.

revolution of curvaceous women is emerging and is taking the world by storm. A lot of fashion brands are starting to preach the gospel of body confidence.

One such brand is “Sdudla Couture”, a South African plus size fashion label by Mihlali Gqada. A social butterfly of note, Mihla’s style and class is reflected in her garments, which are for the voluptuous women. She believes being an ambassador of plus size women is the best thing ever, as it doesn’t compromise who she is.

This 29 year old woman was born in the Eastern Cape and was born and bred in Mdantsane which she fondly refers to as “My Ntsane”.

Mihlali professionally works in the Transport Industry, as a Transport Logistics specialist.

She is currently completing her Master’s in Public Administration - Intergovernmental Relations with the University of Pretoria. In her spare time she does Motivational Speaking in a variety of capacities nationally.

She is self motivated and loves the social scene. She also designs her own outfits and is a social butterfly of note. She is member of the Women of Sparta Book Club feature in the 2011 March True Love. She would love to do plus size modeling and loves inspiring young women to love being different while being health and maintaining positivity in their lives.

She has published a number of her poems and looks to expand her brand Sdudla Couture, which I subsequently asked more about. go to page 10 >> 9

Haters talk all the time and everywhere I go they look at me with those disapproving stares, but I walk tall because I am true to myself.

Why are you here (on the cover of BNB)?

I don’t know you tell me.

Lol!!! I think because sdudla fabulous and I love it; and because I have a brand called sdudla couture. A label for curvaceous, plus size women.

So what inspired you to start a fashion label for plus size women?

I am inspired by a range of things, one of which is knowing who I am and not compromising on my worth.

I do me at all accounts and never compromise on my standards and love of self.

Curvy women need to get out of their shells and shelves that society continue to put us in, like that we can’t wear certain clothes or look a certain way. Let’s break free from the “They Can’t” spirit and begin the 10

It has been said, countless number of times, that knowing your shape will help you find the look that fits your body type. Well, this is so true and in this edition we going to show you how to determine your shape and how to dress it.

t’s always a challenge being BIG, beautiful and fabulous; especially when you have limited options on where to get the trendiest plus size clothing.

Knowing your size is very important when going out to find the best outfits for curvaceous body. So many full figured divas get this wrong, and it ends up being a huge battle shopping for clothes.

Well, do not despair, we will show you how to determine your size, how to dress for your size and where to get fabulous full figured fashion.

KNOW YOUR SIZE Many plus-size women often are ashamed of their size.

This usually happens to ladies who are in their early 20s; you tell yourself that you are young and you are not meant to be big, then you buy small sizes (28s, 30s, 32s,) and then spend months trying to fit into the clothes. This eventually depresses you and you end up feeling less attractive.

You spend half the time trying different dieting methods and they work on you.

Accept your body first before you can attempt loose weight.

HAVE STYLE This requires respecting yourself as a woman. Often we big women walking on the streets with extremely tight outfits that reveal everything that you wouldn’t wish to see. Dryness of lips can be a nightmare. It can be painfull and so unattrictive when the cracked and dry.

Solution

Make-up artist Algria Ferreira recommends actually exfoliating them (with a product with natural granules or your regular facial exfoliator) and then applying a thick coat of treatment lip balm.

“Put a little exfoliating product onto a face cloth and gently buff your lips using warm water to rinse with,” says Ferreira. And while you shouldn’t do this too often (over exfoliation can be very abrasive), as a winter treatment, a lip scrub is a good problem solver.

ou’ve been seeing him for a few months now, and everything’s going great. You feel so comfortable with him. But then you notice something that’s not so comfortable – i.e., the waistband of your sexiest jeans.

It’s official! You’re a victim of relationship pudge (that’s what I call it, anyway).

And it doesn’t take a diet expert to figure out how you piled on the extra pounds.

You’ve been going out to dinner with your guy, ordering in for those cozy at-home evenings, making ice-cream runs and snuggling with him on the couch, watching The Notebook with a tissue in one hand and a chocolate chip cookie in the other.

Avoid using food to show love or concern.

Don’t cook your sweetheart a high-fat meal if he’s had a bad day, and don’t let him get into the habit of bringing you sweets because he knows you’re stressed. It’s great that you want to soothe each other, but find a way to do that without involving food (long talks, soothing back rubs).

And across the country, hundreds of thousands of other couples are doing exactly the same thing. According to Elizabeth Josefsberg, Director of Brand Advocacy for Weight Watchers, it’s very common for partners to put on “love weight.” Explains Josefsberg, “Any time there’s a dramatic change in life, whether good or bad, weight can be put on.” But these smart, simple changes can stop romance from fattening you up:

When you’re snuggling on the couch, make sure it’s just you and him -not you, him and a giant bag of Doritos.

Don’t make every date about food.

Follow the classic restaurant dieting rules when you do go out to dinner: Have a green salad (skip the high-fat dressing), a broiled or baked entrée, and if you’ve absolutely got to have dessert, split it between the two of you.

Don’t eat because he’s eating.

His metabolism is probably twice as high as yours, and chances are you’ll show some pudge long before he does.

If the two of you are going through a bad phase in your relationship, don’t go into automatic-eating mode.

Avoid habitually going out to dinner, or even regularly going to the movies, where you’ll end up eating a sandpail-sized portion of popcorn.

“Play a sport instead,” Josefsberg says.

Go for a hike or a swim; if you’re not athletically inclined, a leisurely walk or a visit to a museum can take the focus off meals and snacks.

That’s a tough battle because resorting to food in stressful times has a physiological as well as an emotional cause. Says mental-health counselor Amanda Banes, “In stressful and sad times, people often turn to food because it activates the pleasure center of your brain as love and sex do. During those times, the hormones in that area of the brain are not being activated. Food can activate them.”

Breathe deeply, take some time to meditate, Don’t keep a lot of junk food in the go for a walk, write in your journal, talk to a house. friend or therapist.

Try fresh fruit or just one box of low-fat, reduced-calorie snack packs.

Who is Karabo?

Karabo is a sdudla fabulous young woman from Escourt, Durban. She has a bubble personality. I have a dynamic personality that flows with every part of my being.

Your childhood background?

I’ve always been a big girl and I hated it at times, but as I grew up I built more confidence and saw I wasn’t different from other people; the only difference was I had wider hips and thicker thighs which all equaled up to size 44.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a student at Damelin College and I’m doing a degree in I.T. Likes and dislikes?

One thing I love more than anything is music and singing, as we all know “the show doesn’t stop until the PHAT lady sings.” LOL!!! One thing I don’t like is dishonesty and liars.

Your vision and goals Nothing captures me more than music (especially different genres such Jazz, Gospel and Afro pop. I’m hoping that one day someone will notice me and invest in my talent, and share the same dream and vision that I have. I’ve also started out modelling and motivating women my age, and even younger, on how to look their best and feel confident in their own body.
