Having established Quiet Studios in 2016, Daniela Franceschini has built a considered portfolio of hospitality and residential projects, weaving together timeless architecture, modern accents and artisan craftsmanship.

Most recently, the Lisbon-based firm employed this approach to reimagine a 19th-century townhouse in the heart of Porto’s creative quarter. The result is a boutique hotel brimming with botany, books and bespoke pieces, balancing historic charm with a contemporary sensibility.

“The future of luxury will be defined by experience and moments that allow guests to feel deeply, with a renewed sense of wonder,” revealed Paolo Ferrari in his keynote address at Sleeper Sessions in Sicily.

Drawing on a diverse portfolio of projects – ranging from a mountain resort carved into ancient rock to a futuristic overwater retreat – the Toronto-based designer demonstrated how design can respond to radically different environments while remaining rooted in ritual, artistry and place.

With a career spanning screen and suite, New Zealand-born actress-turned-hotelier Anouska Hempel has long been celebrated for her theatrical sensibility. For her latest project, the designer lends her signature style to RH London, The Gallery in Mayfair, where a restaurant, bar and lounge serve as an immersion into the luxury brand. The sensory escape uses light, reflection and shadow to dramatic effect, exemplifying Hempel’s time-honoured approach of “design follows where imagination goes”.

For husband-and-wife duo Jacopo and Rosa Sertoli, the art of preservation became the guiding principal behind Magia de Uma, a secluded sanctuary nestled among Bali’s rice fields and tropical foliage. “Our aim was to conserve, not to restore to perfection, so guests can feel the history of the place,” says Rosa, whose hospitality background serves as the perfect counterbalance to Jacopo’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Dutch firm MVRDV has won a competition to design Inaura, a fitness-led hospitality and branded residences concept launched

by UAE-based developer Arada.

Situated between Downtown Dubai and Business Bay, the 210-metre rectilinear skyscraper is anchored by a four-storey plinth housing a 3,000m2 gym with yoga, boxing and dance studios, as well as a holistic spa and infinity pool. Above, a 101key hotel and 105 urban apartments occupy the lower levels of the tower, while nine luxurious Sky Villas sit above.

A highlight of MVRDV’s design is the Sky Lounge, envisioned as a glowing orb embedded between the upper floors. The structure itself is exclusive to VIP guests, while the surrounding space serves as a club, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering views towards the Burj Khalifa and wider cityscape.

The façade is defined by wraparound balconies that form deep overhangs, designed to protect interiors from sunlight and heat gain. As the tower rises, mirrored glazing becomes increasingly transparent, crisp corners soften into rounded edges and balconies flare outwards to create additional outdoor space for the premium residences.

“Inaura brings a new character to the Dubai skyline that hasn’t really been explored before – something that is exquisite yet simultaneously demure,” says Jacob van Rijs, Founding Partner at MVRDV. “Beyond its visual effect, it is also a tremendously practical design: the tower has efficient, rectangular floorplans, and there is no wasted ‘vanity height’ that you see in towers with intricate crowns. The Sky Lounge instead serves to organise and communicate the building’s programme, attuned to the city at its lower levels and to the skyline at the top, with its signature feature forming a horizon in between.”

MVRDV will continue working on the project as design guardian, with Dubai-based Dewan Architects + Engineers taking over as lead consultant. Inaura’s interiors will also be designed by MVRDV to an approach that builds on Arada’s vision to create a fitness- and wellness-led lifestyle destination.

Niehku Mountain Villa in Swedish Lapland, was designed specifically for heliskiing, so fans of the sport were in love with the hotel before it even existed.

ON CHANGES IN HOSPITALITY DESIGN The clearest shift is that generic hospitality has become much harder to defend. If a hotel is undifferentiated, it very quickly ends up competing on price. But when a hotel is tied to a strong experience, story or deeper sense of purpose, demand becomes much more resilient. Geographically, I believe the future of travel is shifting north. Partly because southern Europe is becoming more crowded and hotter in peak season, but also because travellers increasingly want what the Nordics can offer in abundance: space, silence, nature, fresh air and a sense of trust.

In our own projects, clients are moving away from creating hotels that are broadly appealing to everyone, in favour of those that are distinctive and emotionally relevant to the right audience. That is a very healthy shift.

“This is the kind of project you only see once in a lifetime, because somebody has to not only have the vision, but also the money to invest,” says General Manager Annie Monnier.

That vision came from the Santo Domingo family, one of Colombia’s most prominent dynasties. “The family wanted to leave a legacy in Cartagena because it is a special city for them, and one of the main principles was that the hotel needed to have a sense of place,” explains Laura Acevedo, Director General of San Francisco Investments.

A refined meal served in a space that feels like home only made it more special. There is no in-house chef at Casa Cedo; instead, the owners hope for the space to become a flexible backdrop for chefled dinners, as well as events and exhibitions.

Binidufà MENORCA Vestige Collection transforms an 18th-century farmstead into an intimate hideaway, completing an 800-hectare dual-destination.

s the sun sets over a country estate in north-west Menorca, the weathered stone of an 18th-century farmstead takes on a golden hue. Recently transformed

into a contemporary hotel, the rural finca is the product of an ambitious restoration and landscaping project that celebrates the pristine landscapes that make Menorca one of Spain’s most enchanting – and fiercely protected – island escapes.

Situated in the Ferreries countryside, Binidufà comprises a series of low-rise farm buildings surrounded by rolling green fields. Cows graze within view of the bedrooms and guests can walk through woodlands populated by wild olives trees, holm oaks and Aleppo pines, or lounge by the outdoor pool encircled by myrtle, lavender and rosemary.

Secluded in this rural setting, the new Menorca property is the latest from family-run Spanish hospitality group Vestige Collection, which has made its name by transforming resplendent heritage buildings into hotels and private estates. ver since Six Senses announced it would open in London, the hospitality industry has questioned whether the brand’s resort aesthetic and wellness-led philosophy

would translate to an urban environment. But from the moment of stepping through the doors, it becomes clear.

Beyond the glazed entrance vestibules, lush planting softens the grandeur, while the distinctive scent of eucalyptus fills the air, immediately slowing the pace. Look closer, and stories of people and place are revealed in every detail. This is a hotel that is deeply connected to its surroundings, yet one that moves to an altogether different rhythm.

Six Senses is set within The Whiteley, a £1.5 billion project to transform London’s first department store into a luxury mixed-use destination. The venture takes its name from William Whiteley, whose pioneering vision redefined the retail experience. Opened in 1911, his purpose-built store offered everything from the essentials to the extraordinary.

Complete with a theatre, restaurants and art galleries, it was described as ‘an immense symposium of the arts and industries of the nation’. Now, its spirit returns, reimagined for a new audience.

We explore the vision behind the project, speaking with the developer, operator, designers and consultants to uncover how Whiteleys department store was transformed into a lifestyle destination, tracing the project’s journey from the earliest design concepts and heritage considerations to the stories, materials and craftsmanship that shaped the project.

SPIRIT AND SOUL Though the public spaces are linked by a central staircase, each floor has its own distinct design language. The interiors throughout the hotel were conceived by AvroKO, whose collaboration with Six Senses proved to be a learning process for both designer and brand. At the time of proposal, Six Senses had yet to open its first urban property in Europe, so the project required careful consideration of how a wellness-led, resort-based ethos could be adapted to a London context. Hotel Indigo Hengqin As Hengqin establishes itself as a new growth hub within China’s Greater Bay Area, Wimberly Interiors has translated the city’s flourishing transformation into a design concept for Hotel Indigo Hengqin. At its core stands the World Tree, a unifying symbol of resilience, connectivity and sustained growth.

From a lobby that represents the roots, through branching public spaces and butterflythemed guestrooms, the hotel’s arboreal narrative culminates in a canopy-like rooftop bar. Elevated above the city, Red & Gold Lounge is characterised by a bold palette symbolising fruition, reward and celebration. n its home turf in the US, RH is approaching the status of a household name, yet until recently the brand was relatively unknown in Europe. That changed with the

opening of RH England at Aynho Park in 2023. Visitors were invited to explore a curated world of history, design, food and wine in a historic mansion amidst the rolling hills and patchwork fields of the British countryside.

Since then, expansion across Europe has continued apace, with new galleries in Madrid, Munich, Paris and Milan.

Launch parties have made a great impact, in which guests from the worlds of art, architecture, fashion and design rub shoulders with A-list celebrities and well-heeled clientele.

In each city, the invitations have been issued as a beautifully curated short film, accompanied by a paean to the location penned by RH Chairman and CEO Gary Friedman.

Having overtaken Dubai as the most active city in the region, Riyadh now has 84 projects in the pipeline, driven by largescale developments in the wider Diriyah area. With hotel development reaching unprecedented heights in 2025, the stage is set for a landmark edition of AHEAD 2026. The occasion is made even more significant by a major milestone: AHEAD’s tenth anniversary as a global awards programme. Having evolved from the European Hotel Design Awards, expanding to Asia, Americas and the Middle East and Africa, the scheme has grown into one of the industry’s most respected platforms for recognising excellence in hospitality design.

With the global programme now underway, the first regional finalists have been announced. In Asia, shortlisted projects range from a converted clan house in Malaysia to a machiya-inspired newbuild in Japan to an eco-sanctuary in the Philippines. A wide range of sectors and styles are represented, and while entries span the entire region, China is increasingly

making its mark – the result of a major expansion drive from key players.

In the Americas, the shortlist is evenly split between urban and resort hotels. Projects in major metropolises such as New York, Miami and Seattle demonstrate how the industry is looking to the past to design the future, while the prominence of luxury mountain resorts in the likes of Utah and Montana reflects the growing appeal of outdoor hospitality.

The shortlisted projects will now be assessed by regional judging panels comprising owners, operators, architects, interior designers and consultants. Each entry is discussed and deliberated in detail before votes are cast. AHEAD Asia winners will be announced at Pan Pacific Orchard in Singapore on 11 September, while AHEAD Americas takes place at New York’s Gotham Hall on 15 October.

Nanimarquina Lucia Eames Nanimarquina and the Eames Office, in collaboration with Form Portfolios, have introduced a collection of rugs based on original artworks by American artist Lucia Eames. The series translates Lucia’s distinctive visual language into woven form, marking a significant expansion of her artistic legacy through material, craft and contemporary design. Drawing from seven artworks created by Lucia, the eponymous range reflects recurring motifs found throughout her body of work, including butterflies, birds, suns, tendrils and abstract organic forms. Produced by artisan communities in India and Pakistan, each rug provides a tactile, architectural medium through which Lucia’s two-dimensional drawing and paper-based compositions can be experienced spatially and over time. Several new technical approaches were developed specifically for the Lucia Eames collection, including sculptural tufting with varied pile heights.
