espite the ongoing difficulties within the industry, there has been a huge amount of progress in terms of plans for sport to return safely, with various technology – be it ticketing, broadcast or health and safety – being implemented in venues across the world. We’ve covered just some of the solutions that will prove to be vital over the next few months.

The progress isn’t just limited to how existing stadiums are adapting, though, as we’ve seen new, groundbreaking venues open, too. One impressive example is our cover story – SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The new home of the LA Rams and LA Chargers showcases some of the very best in design and never-before-seen technology. We’re delighted to offer some real insight into what is, quite clearly, going to be one of best multipurpose venues in the world.

We’ve also covered the project at Juventus F.C’s Allianz Stadium, which has seen an incredible Bose audio system installed to enhance the fan experience.

I also spoke to Pixellot’s Alon Werber and Yossi Tarablus about the company’s exciting, new partnership with FC Barcelona and what that means for the development of its automated video production technology.

t was recently announced that Amazon has secured the naming rights to the new home of Seattle’s NHL team and WNBA’s Seattle Storm, it will be named the Climate Pledge Arena rather than the name of the company. In 2019, Amazon and Global Optimism announced The Climate Pledge, which calls on signatories to be net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040 – a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement. With significant investment from Amazon and Oak View Group, the venue is expected to be the first net zero carbon certified arena in the world and set a new sustainability bar for the sports and events industry.

The 18,100-seat multipurpose venue located at Seattle Center is expected to host 200 events each year, including NHL Seattle, three-time WNBA world champion Seattle Storm, live music and entertainment from the world’s biggest stars, and City of Seattle community events. It is currently undergoing a transformation to construct a brand-new arena under the landmark Paul Thiry-designed roof.

Instead of naming it after Amazon, we’re calling it Climate Pledge Arena as a regular reminder of the importance of fighting climate change,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “We look forward to working together with Oak View Group, a new Climate Pledge signatory, and NHL Seattle to inspire global climate action.”

Climate Pledge Arena aims to be the first arena in the world targeting net Zero Carbon certification by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing sustainable building practices. The arena will have all-electric operations and be powered with 100% renewable electricity, both from on-site solar panels and off-site renewable energy. Events at the arena will be made fully net zero carbon through investments in forestry projects with organisations such as The Nature Conservancy that will sequester any remaining carbon emissions from arena operations.

Carbon emissions and sustainability performance of the arena and all events will be measured and publicly disclosed, and all operations and events will be ‘zero waste’ with durable and compostable containers.

A minimum of 95% of all arena waste will be diverted from landfills on a weight basis. The arena will use reclaimed rainwater in the ice system to create the greenest ice in the NHL and the original 44-millionpound roof from the arena will be reused in construction to significantly reduce the embodied carbon of the building.

At least 75% of the arena’s food programme will be sourced locally on a seasonal basis to support regional farmers and producers, and all viable unused food from events will be donated to local community food programs. NHL Seattle and WNBA Storm tickets will double as free public transit passes to promote use of public transportation for attendees, including on the refurbished Seattle Monorail. Amazon and OVG will also form the Climate Pledge Arena Sustainability Advisory Council in partnership with community groups to support local environmental initiatives.

When completed in 1937, the stadium structure – built entirely with steel and concrete tiers, including a curved, cantilevered stand – was a forerunner in modernist football stadia. Feyenoord’s current ambitions to further strengthen the football club, in combination with the municipality of Rotterdam’s plan to rejuvenate the area of Rotterdam-Zuid, have led to the development of the new Feyenoord Stadium as part of Feyenoord City – a masterplan designed to transform Rotterdam-Zuid into a wellconnected and vibrant neighbourhood for sports, recreation, and living.

Over the past decade, stadium design has been evolving in response to football clubs’ new demands, including engagement with a larger supporter base, diversification of hospitality offerings, and development of commercial opportunities. For Feyenoord, various renovations of De Kuip between the 1950s and 1990s have offered immediate solutions to the needs of the football club to upgrade the football watching experience, and to increase its business and hospitality capacity. While

catering to Feyenoord’s changing needs, these transformations also compromised the stadium’s original design intent. The new Feyenoord Stadium – proposed by OMA, Feijenoord Stadium, and the Feyenoord football club – at a new location along the Nieuwe Maas and a highly accessible transportation node, is a future-proof infrastructure for football and daily activities in the surrounding communities.

The new stadium is an ensemble of essential elements: the stand, circulation cores, the structure, and functional spaces. Each element has been logically designed to maximise performance. The three-tier stand increases the capacity of the stadium to 63,000, while placing spectators as close to the field as possible for an intimate match experience. All seats have an above FIFA standard C-value that ensures clear and unobstructed views of the playing field. A total of 12 concrete circulation cores, with different types of stairs and elevators inside, are evenly distributed along the perimeter of the stadium. This configuration allows a large number of visitors to efficiently move between the concourse and upper levels on event days. The bowl-shaped steel structure – a diagrid that requires less structural steel than a conventional steel frame – is the

primary structure supporting the stand and its roof. Functional spaces have been designed for specific users such as players, guests, and media.

They also accommodate hospitality offerings including restaurants and multifunctional spaces.

All these elements have been assembled to form a stadium that is more than the sum of its parts: logical and functional as De Kuip and offering one of the best sightlines among stadiums of this scale, it is a truly open stadium with a public concourse on the main entry level. Designed in collaboration with LOLA Landscape Architects, this concourse is not fenced off but welcomes the public. With daily open F&B offerings, a playground, and greeneries, it is a space for football fans and the public to gather on match days, and for everyone to use for leisure activities when there are no events.

Distinctive from most contemporary stadiums designed as isolated icons – relevant only to football and detached from a city’s daily life – the new Feyenoord Stadium is a vital space in the Feyenoord City masterplan and open to public. By restoring the stadium’s historical role as a city’s significant public realm, it redefines the existing typology.

PRUDENTIAL CENTER RIEDEL Prudential Center, the world-class sports and entertainment venue located in downtown Newark, New Jersey, has replaced its ageing signal and communications infrastructure with an all-new signal routing and intercom backbone based on Riedel solutions. Riedel’s MediorNet real-time signal transport, processing, and routing technology is integrated with an Artist digital matrix intercom mainframe and Bolero wireless intercom to enable seamless and high-quality communications throughout the facility.

Opened in 2007, Prudential Center has been the home arena for the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, the Seton Hall University Pirates men’s basketball team, and more than 175 concerts, family shows, and special events each year. Known by fans as “The Rock,” the arena seats 16,500 for hockey games and almost 19,000 for basketball. The new Riedel solution replaces an intercom system that was 014

Other advantages are the integrated features of MediorNet and the flexibility to grow the system just by adding more nodes where needed, rather than having to buy a completely new router.”

in-arena productions. The MediorNet real-time network routes all video content and feeds from the control room to the scoreboard and monitors throughout the building, and also transports feeds to replay operators for all sporting events.

One especially valuable capability of the new Riedel intercom system is its point-to-point features, which allow individual crew members to speak directly with one another rather than having to share a crowded main channel during a game. With each Bolero beltpack acting as a wireless key panel integrated with Artist, users are able to place point-to-point calls whenever and wherever needed.

“With Bolero’s fantastic range, our game-day workflows have improved significantly. Now we are able to talk to our floor managers and camera operators wherever they are, instead of waiting for them to return within range,” Joe added. “With our newfound communication range, we have new opportunities for filming in-game features from various locations in our building, capturing live footage from angles that we previously couldn’t use, and generating unique, fan-engaging content that translates into new revenue potential.” www.riedel.net

MICROCOM XR PLIANT TECHNOLOGIES Pliant Technologies new MicroCom XR provides full-duplex, multi-user intercom for applications where high-quality audio, extended range, ease of use, and affordability are essential. CONTROL COCKPIT VERSION 4.0.0 SENNHEISER Sennheiser has recently announced a major update of its Sennheiser Control Cockpit, a software tool that makes daily work routines in controlling and monitoring large microphone set-ups a breeze. Besides design and usability enhancements, the latest version 4.0.0 now adds the ability to monitor the new SpeechLine Multi-Channel Receiver and the EM 6000 receiver from Sennheiser’s Digital 6000 series, in addition to evolution wireless G3 and G4, SpeechLine and the TeamConnect Ceiling 2 microphone.

Sennheiser Control Cockpit now features a ‘location-based mute’ functionality: All devices in e.g. a room can be grouped and their mute switches synchronised, so that all devices can be muted and unmuted together, either centrally via the Sennheiser Control Cockpit or locally on one of the devices. 2020 SPRING DRAFT CLEAR-COM Sound and Vision Entertainment (SAV) stepped in to provide the secure communication infrastructure needed to broadcast the 2020 Spring Draft, keeping all production crew connected, while working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Clear-Com Eclipse HX digital matrix system along with LQ IP Series was the chosen intercom solution to support the large network of remote Agent-IC intercom app clients required for this broadcast.

For the first time ever, the annual meeting of American football franchises to select newly eligible players for the upcoming season was held via video conference as a result of worldwide travel restrictions. Instead of the planned spectacular live event in Las Vegas, all team selections took place virtually, with league broadcasting picks taking place from the commissioner’s basement as well as various other locations. This historic Draft was broadcast live from 23 – 25 April.

Freeman, Brady Belavek of SAV and engineer Dave Ragains of Show Machine were hired to handle all production communications between the league, the networks and all production staff. Freeman, along with Brady and Dave have been providing the communications solution for the Draft for over a decade, but never in a virtualised setting.

Brady said: “When the decision was made to virtualise the Draft broadcast, we were tasked to come up with a reliable and secure remote communications solution that would enable a large number of production staff to operate from their homes, while still being able to communicate on the production intercom freely over many channels.

What turned out to be one of the biggest challenges was managing ISP connections in individual’s homes and offices, not to mention the security requirements from the league, who were understandably concerned about cybersecurity threats.”

Once the LQ license count demands and firewall concerns grew too much, SAV and Freeman turned to Clear-Com for support – and received an unprecedented offer.

Justin Emge, Applications Engineering Manager, Clear-Com, explained: “We had an AE Lab Eclipse HX system in our Alameda headquarters that we use to run remote demonstrations across our product range, so it already had the required software licenses installed and the IP infrastructure set up to handle large numbers of remote Agent-IC client users. Freeman and SAV were already familiar with our equipment, so when we offered it as an 22

emergency fix, they were happy to accept.”

Over 80 members of the production crew downloaded Clear-Com’s Agent-IC mobile app to their iOS and Android mobile devices, which connected back primarily to the Eclipse HX system, or alternatively to an LQ system set up at SAV in Los Angeles. Both the Eclipse and LQ systems were then connected to several phone conference lines for communication between Agent-IC and various control rooms.

Agent-IC is a proven and cost-effective solution for location productions, remote coordination and other critical tasks, essentially turning mobile devices into fully-featured, easy to use intercom panels that integrate into existing workflows and connect securely over 3G, 4G, LTE or Wi-Fi networks.

Since the Eclipse system was connected to Clear-Com’s corporate network, Clear-Com’s IT department was brought on to ensure the ISP data connections required were all running properly and to check that the firewall could facilitate all required connections, guaranteeing 100% uptime throughout the three-day event.

Brady said: “I’ve never been approached to do a remote production of this scale, it was nuts! But I am so proud of what we were able to achieve, and the entire production team was thrilled by how smoothly things went.”

There were upwards of 90-100 end-point connections, including around 80 Agent-IC connections, up to nine conference lines for meetings of 10 people, and seven audio trunks running down to back-up equipment based in Los Angeles.

“Everyone was able to work from wherever they were, and they were able to maintain the same person-to-person and group communication options that they would have had for a normal studio production,” Dave added.

Justin concluded: “Production teams are having to invent new remote workflows on the fly to cope with this evolving situation, and Clear-Com was happy to partner with SAV and Freeman to come up with a solution in such a tight timeline. The communication solution for the Draft broadcast is a perfect example of the collaboration that we have fostered with our partners. D SQUARED DIGITAL WIRELESS MIC SYSTEM LECTROSONICS Designed to be ideal for installations and live events where high-quality audio and reliability are required, the Lectrosonics D Squared digital wireless microphone system employs the company’s fourth-generation digital architecture, offering improved flexibility, fast setup, studio-quality audio and ultra-low latency. The D Squared family includes the DSQD digital receiver, DBu digital beltpack transmitter, and DHu digital handheld transmitter, as well as the DPR digital plug-on transmitter.

The system operates across a tuning range from 470 to 608 MHz (470 to 614 MHz for export versions) and features 24-bit, 48kHz digital audio, two-way IR sync, and three levels of encryption.

The DSQD four-channel receiver occupies a half-rack, yielding eight channels in 1RU, the highest rack density of any wireless system. Front-panel features include a high-resolution colour display, headphone jack with level control, IR port, power switch and USB connector for future firmware updates.

Rear-panel connections include analog and digital audio outputs, BNC antenna ports with buffered loop outputs for feeding another receiver, and an Ethernet port for communication with Wireless Designer software. A serial port enables connection between receivers for data sharing and frequency coordination. The DSQD is backward-compatible with any Lectrosonics Digital Hybrid Wireless transmitter and provides a choice of three antenna diversity choices.

Constructed with a housing milled out of aluminum alloy, the DHu handheld transmitter is compatible with Lectrosonics’ HHC cardioid condenser microphone capsule, or may be used with a variety of capsule heads employing the standard 1.25-inch/28-thread pitch mount. A programmable button on the outside of the housing can be user-configured as a push-to-talk, cough, mute or power switch, or may be bypassed.

The DBu beltpack is made from solid machined aluminum and features a removable antenna with SMA connector. Audio input is via TA5 connector with servo-bias for compatibility with a wide range of mic and line-level sources. A multi-function switch on the top panel can be configured as power on/off, mute, talkback, or may be bypassed.

The DPR digital plug-on transmitter offers RF power selections at 25 and 50 mW and includes AES 256-CTR encryption for security. Phantom power is selectable to off, 5v, 15v or 48v to accommodate a wide range of microphone types. A two-way IR port ensures quick setup and allows for encryption key transfer and other data sharing between units. The DPR can be configured as either a transmitter or a recorder, with files stored on microSD card memory in the industry standard Broadcast Wave .wav (BWF) format at 24 bits, 48 kHz sample rate. A 3.5mm TRS jack on the side of the unit allows timecode jam sync. The microSD memory card can also be used to update the unit’s firmware in the field.

Alon: The main area of development is to keep improving and automating the processes for elite clubs like Barcelona. We want even more automation when it comes to the training ground and to simplify the interface between us and other systems even further. Plus, there’s always room for more features and functions when it comes to the video and the data. Also, another area we are pursuing is a unique, economical product that is easy to use for soccer academies around the world. Barcelona have many affiliated academies and we are already starting to provide them with solutions that fit their budget and needs.

We can provide a high-quality system, which can be set up in a few minutes, that provides video, analytics and everything we do. Of course, the academies won’t need the advanced tools that Barcelona use, for example, but this is still a high-end option that is affordable for the smaller setups. It will help them improve their game - and Barcelona are applying some of these best practices.

Yossi: One of the other elements of this collaboration is also to use the systems that we have to produce games that were never produced before, with the aim of broadcasting them on their own channel, Barca TV+.

Will Pixellot’s technology be used for broadcast, then? Can you expand on that?

Yossi: We are broadcasting around 100,000 hours of games all over the world; America, Japan, China, Brazil, you name it, but, with Barcelona, the main focus was coaching. However, to use handball as an example

But, it must be said that this process wasn’t easy. We had two or three years working with the club and they were very demanding and rightly so, as this is Barcelona, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

So, it was a long process of improvements, additions and changes, but we treated it as a huge opportunity for ourselves to improve. It definitely wasn’t a case of us coming in on day one and the club simply saying ‘let’s do a strategic partnership worldwide’ - they tested with us for two or three years and then felt that what we offered was the best on the market. Now, we have our partnership and we want to continue improving in every area possible.

Our goal is that SoFi Stadium appears to be designed specifically for every unique event it hosts. We have planned for our design to meet the needs of events from the Olympics to local gatherings,” explained Mark.

Structural engineers, Walter P Moore, worked on the structural and enclosure engineering at SoFi Stadium. With a long history of close collaboration with HKS Architects, especially on innovative designs in the sporting sector, Walter P Moore was present from the very early stages of SoFi Stadium’s design. “As Principal in Charge, one of my responsibilities was to handpick the subject matter experts capable of taking this design idea and driving it to the finish line where we are today. With so many details to pay attention to, we had to stay focussed on the bigger picture - achieving the overall vision for the project set by Los Angeles Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke. We had a great collaborative and accountable team on the project,” explained Mashari Nassar, Senior Principal and Director of Client Strategy at Walter P Moore.

We’ve also developed design tools and planning and management processes that allow us to tackle these projects efficiently and with reduced risk to our clients.”

The team at Walter P Moore solved complex technical problems at the stadium with a graceful structural system that melded into HKS’ architectural vision. Early design charrettes were key in developing structural systems that supported Mr. Kroenke’s project vision, while considering numerous other factors, such as structural efficiency and constructability. Mark Waggoner, Walter P Moore Principal and Lead Roof Designer, explained further: “There were five guiding principles: Firstly, structurally separate the roof from the bowl structure to allow each to respond independently under seismic forces; then, support the roof outside the excavation to limit column height and enable concurrent construction of the roof and the bowl. We also had to ensure the venue provided for excellent seismic performance and used lightweight roof systems to reduce seismic mass. Most importantly, we had to support the design vision of Mr. Kroenke by achieving all of these goals with a graceful structure.”

“I think what really stands out is the way the design weaves together so many different programme elements under a massive common roof. LA is the ideal place for something like this to be built; in almost any other climate, we would be concerned with how we could enclose and condition the environment under a roof. It is much more than just a stadium under a roof – there is the performance venue, American Airlines Plaza, and various site structures. With the roof open around the perimeter, you are both inside and outside simultaneously. Even the deep excavation is leveraged in perimeter areas like the east

uilt in 1960, the WiZink Center – originally named Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid - is an indoor sporting arena located in the Spanish capital of Madrid. The former building was destroyed by a fire in

2001, which led to a new, modern venue, designed by architects, Enrique Hermoso and Paloma Huidobro, which was built between 2002 and 2005.

Since then, WiZink Arena has been able to offer a variable capacity depending on the sport or event, with 10,000 - with 200-metre track and six lanes - for athletics, 14,000 for handball, 15,000 for basketball games and, finally, 15,500, with a standing public ramp, for concerts.

Since the redevelopment, the arena, which is home to Real Madrid Basketball and Movistar Estudiantes, has hosted two major international basketball events; the knockout stage of EuroBasket 2007 and the EuroLeague’s Final Four in 2008. The venue was also the setting for the Copa del Rey of basketball final in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2019. It was the finals venue for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, too. It’s not just sporting events, either, with a whole host of acts performing at WiZink Arena, including Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Oasis and Arctic Monkeys, to name a few.

UtterBerry | COVID-19 Sensor System tterBerry has developed a new patented system in response to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases aiming to increase safety in the workplace, in large venues, and in public. The newly developed sensor system consists of a small unit that can detect potentially ill individuals. The sensor visually analyses the wrist/arm in a contactless and anonymous way, scanning the biometrics of an individual and tracking entrance and exit numbers in order to monitor crowd levels.

The system uses high-accuracy scans of multiple biometric levels. All of this information is stored anonymously within the secure UtterBerry blockchain system. This allows for comprehensive monitoring of entrants into any venue while maintaining anonymity and accuracy.

The Sensor not only monitors biometrics but uses onboard sound sensors to isolate signs of other symptoms, such as coughing, wheezing, and sneezing.

It also monitors the surrounding area to ensure that multiple symptoms are monitored – something incredibly important with COVID-19 due to its frequently asymptomatic or semi-asymptomatic nature.

The System has onboard QR and RFC readers to allow for seamless integration into conventional entrance ways, allowing for symptom scanning and admission confirmation to take place simultaneously. This was an essential

feature during development as efficiency and speed are incredibly important when it comes to admission, whether it be large or small scale venues, offices, or other versatile entrances.

The UtterBerry system has onboard artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) allowing the system to become more accurate over time, and reactive to patterns that emerge, including potential interaction with more subtle symptoms as the system notices development.

The data that is collected can be sent to the cloud for storage and can be displayed through the unique and secure utterberry.io portal. Additionally, the system can be configured to notify relevant personnel if any anomalous reading is detected, allowing for rapid responses to potentially ill individuals entering a venue.

UtterBerry aims to implement the system to assist with the gradual return to public events, seamlessly linking the admission process within offices, venues, and events with an accurate sensor that responds to multiple COVID-19 symptoms.

WFS LIVE: STADIUM MANAGEMENT IN A POST-PANDEMIC WORLD Is a long-term transformation on the cards?

ONDO | STADIA was delighted to be asked to host a panel at this year’s WFS Live, presented by World Football Summit. Joining MONDO | STADIA’s Editor, Sam Hughes, for the panel focussed on stadium management in a post-pandemic world was Maddelena Cannarsa, Principal Architect at Grimshaw UK and Ashraf Adam, CEO of Mandela Bay Development Agency.

Following the informative discussion, Maddalena has summed up the changes we can expect as we enter what is being described as the ‘new normal’ for sporting venues.

In the aftermath of COVID-19, the sporting calendar will be changed forever. And, with that, the number of unused stadiums would be at a record number, with the entire footballing community coming to a standstill. Mass gatherings will, for the foreseeable future, become avoided events and bring more issues for clubs in terms of selling tickets and attracting the public. Until the availability of a vaccine, should these infrastructures reopen, they will need to be transformed to maintain the required social distancing while assuring all fans of all appropriate safety measures. With the economic

and demographic health of stadiums changing for the next generation, what more transformations can we expect that will remove the concerns of the fans from coming to the stadium regularly?

In the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, a rethinking of architecture and design has already started. Architects and designers are having discussions and brainstorming sessions related to the transformations which are needed in all building typologies, in the short and long-terms.

Regarding the sport venues, we are all aware of the importance of going back to normal as soon as possible. Sport, in fact, is all about the human experience, and the stadium’s function is to bring people together to attend a live event.

The first changes are related to the necessity of increasing the safety measures to control risks and remove concerns of the fans coming to the stadium.

The fans’ experience will indeed change. Temperature check control at entrance is becoming the new normality; everyone will get used to it as they have got used to bag check and to liquid ban in airport and public buildings since 9/11. Contactless

tickets have been already introduced and will be systematised to reduce waiting time in queues. However, even if quick, these procedures will add new layers of control which will inevitably slow down the entrance operations.

This will be an opportunity to rethink the design of the external zones of the stadium which, integrated with new digital contents and activities, will serve the fans’ entertainment while they wait to enter the building. It will also generate commercial returns to the clubs.

Once inside the stadium, the fans will find new circulation and flow systems, and the wayfinding will be redesigned in

respect to the social distancing guidelines. Crowd control apps are already in place to manage the queues at restrooms and concessions.

In a more futuristic scenario, there are proposals to introduce robots and drones to deliver goods directly to the fans’ seats.

This option is open to debate since there may be various opinions on that. Specific surveys will have to be undertaken to evaluate people’s wishes and respond to them efficiently.

All the interior spaces of the stadium, from hospitality areas to players facilities, will be upgraded with new innovative antibacterial materials and fabrics, integrated touchless 091

technologies and self-cleaning systems.

Specific attention will be paid to air quality, as it has been identified as one of the main sources of virus spread. Natural air ventilation should be preferred over air recirculation and engineers are already working on innovative filtering systems.

Regarding the seating bowl, it is difficult to imagine a substantial transformation to the layout, as its design is fixed by strict series of regulations. Any change in the area would produce cascading effects to the seating capacity, the spectators’ sightlines, the distances from and to vomitorias, and so on.

However, wherever the stadium’s dimensions allow it, increasing the number of sky boxes could be a solution. Being enclosed areas, they could operate at full capacity allowing groups and families via track and tracing systems.

We can expect that a COVID-19 vaccine will be found soon, but, even if and when it occurs, we are now aware of the need to be prepared for any other viral pandemic that might assail us in the future. Consequently, we have to design buildings which are flexible, and adaptable to changes and to new needs which may be felt necessary.

The stadium is already a flexible building, as it is conceived to operate all-year around, alternating between the “match mode” and the “concert mode” configurations.

To respond to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, we have seen how many stadia around the world have been adapted into three additional configurations that we can call: Lockdown Mode; Reduced Capacity Mode; and Social Emergency Mode.

LOCKDOWN MODE: In conceiving it, we need to think ahead and incorporate new technologies, starting from the concept phase. Many new ideas are currently explored which aim at providing a satisfactory experience to the spectators watching the game from home, and to the players playing in an empty stadium. Among these ideas are crowd noise simulations, virtualisation of the stands, new camera positions allowing additional points of view and interactive experience.

Other innovations will come with the intent of making sure that 092

games can continue under any condition, without interruption, safeguarding the fans’ experience and clubs’ revenues.

REDUCED CAPACITY MODE: It consists in a temporary operational adaptation rather than a permanent design change. To conceive it, we should consider a layout rearrangement to minimise the loss of revenues due to unsold tickets. In new stadia, the number of sky boxes could be increased wherever possible to enable families and groups to attend the event together. Also, sectored spaces could be created in anticipation and defined according to fire regulations.

SOCIAL EMERGENCY MODE: Natural disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding) as well as pandemics (even starting with the Spanish flu of 1918-1920), have led to stadia adaptation to social uses like hospitals, quarantine centres, testing sites, temporary shelters and so on.

While designing the stadium of the future, we should add another scale of measure a part of the spectators’ capacity.

In fact, we should calculate the exact number of beds, intensive care units, testing cubicles that would fit into the building in case of need. That would minimise the operational costs and speed up the process of transformation made under emergency stress.

The last topic to mention is the sustainability design.

Environmental awareness is one of the COVID-19 outcomes.

The CO2 emission reduction during the lockdown has brought more awareness among the public at-large. Last year, in Brussels, Grimshaw signed the “World GBC Net Zero Carbon 2030 Commitment”, which means that all its works will be carbon neutral by 2030. This is an ambitious goal and knowing that the public opinion is supportive, is a very good incentive.

To reach a sustainable building environment, we all need to work in tied collaboration, sharing the same approaches and goals.

To conclude, I would say that all this pandemic experience has indeed revealed itself to be an opportunity to design better venues: smarter, more flexible, and more sustainable.

The future remains uncertain for teams, broadcasters, sponsors and audiences alike, with organisers pondering how best to return to action without the funds generated by ticket sales or the passion of capacity crowds. The absence of sports means that networks are being starved of the content that they need to survive. And without an audience, there are no ads from brands who have relied on the sporting category to get their products and services into the hands of consumers.

How will companies have to adapt to overcome the challenges presented by COVID-19?

The audience’s appetite for sporting spectacle remains stronger than ever. As a result, the industry has started to adapt its strategies in the short term, such as broadcasting archived or modified content across OTT platforms and streaming channels. When stadium sports recommence, it will be up to broadcasters to create the atmosphere and drive engagement for adrenaline-starved fans. We’ve seen Yamaha create a new smartphone app that will allow fans watching at home to encourage players, with their voices reverberating around the stadium in real time via loudspeakers. Brands have also started to slowly re-engage with fans of the clubs

that they sponsor, with LED perimeter and wall advertising at matches played behind closed doors.

Do you think this kind of experimentation will start to become mainstream in sports?

These new innovations all have something in common – they are focussed around harnessing familiar patterns and behaviours to keep spectators coming back for more. Sports are all about human interaction and engagement. Interactivity is at the centre of how we move forward. The pandemic has set us a new pace. Change is both inevitable, and, until there is a cure, irrevocable.
