here is something truly special about venues that bridge the gap between historic architecture and futuristic technology - and I’m delighted that ISSUE 45 is packed with examples of how the world’s most iconic arenas are reinventing themselves to meet the demands of the modern spectator.

The stunning Avicii Arena in Stockholm is a perfect example - to ensure the venue remains at the pinnacle of live performance, Meyer Sound has implemented a massive audio overhaul using its Constellation system.

Elsewhere, we’ve explored d&b audiotechnik’s latest project at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. As one of the busiest multipurpose venues in the Middle East, the need for a versatile, world-class system was paramount.

We also take a closer look at Moment Factory’s collaboration with Real Madrid to create Realmadrid Games. This world-first permanent multimedia activation transforms the corridors of the Bernabéu into a multi-level interactive journey. By turning underutilised spaces into a year-round attraction, the project sets a new benchmark for sporting venues across the world.

In Hamburg, TRISON has spearheaded a visual upgrade at the Barclays Arena, installing cutting-edge Samsung displays that bring a new level of clarity to every seat in the house.

CIRCADIAN LIGHTING: MERCEDESAMG PETRONAS FORMULA 1 CASE STUDY Elina Dayanova, Global Segment Manager, Healthcare and Education Practice ince Signify started partnering with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team in 2024 to drive our shared passion for sustainable technology and responsible innovation, we’ve learned a great deal about the punishing Formula 1 racing season schedule and the unique challenges that drivers face to achieve and maintain peak performance. The team drivers and trainers, in turn, have learned a great deal about how light can help them do just that.

Every year for 10 months, starting in March to December, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team participates in 24 races on five different continents.

With all the shifting time zones, night and day races, and long airline flights, jet lag becomes a serious issue—and if it isn’t addressed effectively, racers quickly find themselves at a competitive disadvantage.

Addressing jet lag requires that drivers manage their sleep and waking cycles effectively, no matter where in the world they find themselves.

What is jet lag, anyway?

Of course, Formula 1 drivers aren’t the only ones affected by jet lag. You’ve likely experienced jet lag, too, and its unpleasant effects are likely familiar to you: fatigue, inability to concentrate, unpredictable spikes in hunger, irritability, and—perhaps worst of all—disturbances to your sleep/wake cycle.

Jet lag can be a serious nuisance, but do you know what causes it? It’s not the second cup of coffee you had at the airport, and it’s not that drink you had with your in-flight meal. It’s actually caused by disruptions to your circadian rhythm.

The circadian rhythm is a 24-hour internal “body clock” that governs the sleep/ wake cycle and other vital aspects of human physical and mental health. When you shift multiple time zones quickly, the circadian rhythm gets out of sync, and you experience the symptoms of jet lag.

Fortunately, jet lag goes away after a few days, and you start to feel better. This means that your internal clock has readjusted to the current time zone, and your 084

circadian rhythm is more or less aligned with the 24-hour day in whatever part of the world you happen to be.

What’s light got to do with it?

You may not know it, but light plays a profound role in regulating the human body clock. The right type and intensity of light at the right time of day helps to keep the circadian rhythm properly aligned (or entrained). The wrong type and intensity of light, on the other hand, can wreak havoc.

Light produces obvious and profound visual effects in us. It also produces nonobvious but equally profound non-visual effects. There are receptors in the eyes, alongside the well-known rods and cones, with a direct line to the region of the brain—the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus—that regulates the human circadian rhythm.

This third kind of receptor contains a photopigment known as melanopsin.

Melanopsin has a lot to do with the functioning of “sleep hormones” like melatonin and tryptophan, as well as with cognitive and affective processes in general.

Melanopsin is most sensitive to short wavelengths of visible light—that is to say, blue light. Not surprisingly, the amount and timing of the blue light we get during each 24-hour period has a lot to do with our circadian health.

Curiously, the eyes’ melanopsin receptors don’t work in tandem with the human visual system, but entirely independently. We know this because experiments have demonstrated the melanopic effects of light even on people who are completely blind.

So, what kind of light do you need, and when? The science—supported by randomized controlled trials and research-based recommendations—indicates that proper circadian entrainment requires a good strong dose of bright blue light for a couple of hours in the morning, when we need to be awake and alert, and dimmer, warmer (non-blue) light in the evening, when we’re getting ready for sleep.

the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. “We’re traveling the globe and we’re often changing time zones, and I’ve learned to recognize that seeking light at certain times of the day and avoiding light before bedtime always helps me sleep better.

Having cool bright light during working hours around the engineering office and in my driver room before races keeps me awake, sharp, and ready to perform.”

The experience of jet lag without getting on a jet Unfortunately, you don’t have to have actual jet lag to experience the symptoms of jet lag. Many of us, including office workers and shift workers, spend 90% of our time indoors, and so may frequently experience impaired performance, brain fog, and sleep disruptions—not exactly because we aren’t spending enough time outdoors, but because we’re not getting the right kind and intensity of light at the right time.

The blue sky experience uses light recipes with high melanopic levels to maintain high performance while at the same time offering functional lighting, and improving light uniformity and distribution to minimize shadows. This helps support work on tasks that require precision, such as examinations and data analysis in healthcare settings.

Melanopic daylight efficacy ratio (M-DER) is a metric that assesses how effectively a light source stimulates the human circadian system as compared to daylight. “It’s been a journey for me, learning the impact light has on your own personal performance, and the impact it has on your sleep,” says Mercedes F1 driver George Russell. “For me, sleep is free performance. If you can have a good nine hours’ sleep, you’re not putting hard work into that, and that makes you feel better. When you get into the right rhythm, that really has a positive impact.”

What’s true for world-class racers is also true for employees in office buildings, hotel guests, and people who work from home. People need light to live their lives and perform well at their jobs, and people need the rhythms of natural light to feel awake and alert during the day and to sleep well at night. For the majority of us who spend most of our waking hours indoors, circadian lighting implemented by dynamic LED luminaires and science-based lighting recipes are a must-have. TASKER Cable Drums asker has decided to enlarge its range of assembled cables by inserting a new line of assembled cable drums ready to use. These drums are realized with flexible sheaths suitable for outdoor use and high-quality connectors. To meet a wide variety of working needs, we thought to create different categories according to application: Audio, Video, and Data. The first cable series is designed for DMX applications in Audio and lighting and includes our TSK1038 PUR and C862 respectively, with one and two pairs. The first one is a single-pair DMX cable with a $2 \ times 0.35 \text{ mm}^2$ section and braided tinned copper shielding.

The second one is its double version, $2 \times (2 \times 0.35 \text{ mm}^2)$, with the addition of Kevlar traction inner elements, giving it double strength and resistance. These cables can be combined with 3- and 5-pin Neutrik XLR ($NC3M/FXX-B$ and $NC5M/FXX-B$) if you wish to have free connectors, along with Schill cable drum GTRM series. Alternatively, they can be combined with one panel connector ($NC3MD-LX-B$) and one free connector, using Schill cable drums GTS0 series.The second series is designed for video broadcast transmission and involves Tasker T42 PUR and TR11 PUR Extraflex. Our T42 PUR is an HD-SDI coaxial cable with a stranded conductor and tinned copper double braid, allowing 12GSDI signal transmission up to 58 m or 3GSDI up to 100 m. TR11 PUR Extraflex instead, is a triaxial cable with a stranded silver-plated copper conductor and double braid, one in silver and the other one in red copper—a perfect combination for professional cameras interconnection up to 300 m.

We combine the coaxial cable with the Neutrik 75 Ohm rear TWIST connector ($NBNC75BUU11X$). For the triaxial, we rely on Fischer Connectors, one of the leaders in this sector, using the 1051 series for both double free connector and free/panel connector combinations.

These two solutions are assembled with Schill GTS0 (for free/free connectors) and GTRM (for free/panel connectors) series cable drums.

We have at the end the third series, dedicated to data transmission over LAN cables, which nowadays involves not only data but also digital audio and video over IP. Specifically for this purpose, we have Tasker C725 PUR, C728 PUR, and C726 PUR. The C725 PUR is a Cat.5e S.-U.T.P. 26/19 AWG with total braided shielding and double sheath, perfect for communications on the DANTE protocol. The C728 PUR is a Cat.6A S.-F.T.P. 24/7 AWG with individually shielded pairs (aluminum foil), tinned copper braid, and a double sheath. Thanks to its bigger section, it is ideal for video transmission on the HD-BASET protocol.

The C726 PUR is a Cat.7 F.T.P. 26/7 AWG with individually shielded pairs (aluminum foil) and tinned copper braid, perfect for the typical high connection speeds of data centers. We combine these cables with high-quality Neutrik EtherCON connectors ($NE8MC-B$, $NE8FDP-B$, and $NE8MX6-B$), mounted on Schill GTMFK series drums with a lockable door to protect the connectors.To keep up with the times, we also present a series of cabled drums with multimode optical fiber with Neutrik OpticalCON connectors (both two and four channels) and a drum with SMPTE cable and Lemo connectors for broadcast.
